Promoting research into the causes and treatment of OCD and related disorders is a top priority of the International OCD Foundation. In 2010, the Foundation granted four Research Awards that totaled $136,648. These yearly Research Awards are funded by contributions from the Foundation’s members and friends. A committee, led by the Vice Chair of the IOCDF Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), Sabine Wilhelm, PhD, and composed of members of the SAB and other OCD experts, reviewed each research proposal and made recommendations to the IOCDF Board of Directors who made the final decisions. The Award winners and their affiliations and topics are listed below.
RESEARCH GRANTSDearFriendsandSupportersoftheInternationalOCDFoundation,
The Foundation continues to move into the future. With the addition of an in-house Web Developer, Fran Harrington, to our staff, we have been able to do a complete website overhaul and added a virtual hoarding center. Significant upgrades to the website this year involved a newly launched support group database to be followed shortly in early 2011 with an updated treatment provider database. Our 17th Annual Conference - held in Washington DC - had over 1,000 attendees, half of which were at a Foundation conference for the first time. With the Pentagon just over a mile away from the conference hotel, we felt that Retired Lt. Colonel Shannon Shy’s Keynote Address: “My War with OCD: A Story of OCD in the Military” was an ideal choice. In addition, Dr. Jonathan Grayson received the Patricia Perkins Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his decades long dedication to the IOCDF and individuals with OCD and their families.Dr. Alec Pollard continues to direct and oversee our Behavior Therapy Training Institutes (BTTI). This year, all three BTTIs were sold out. As a result, over 90 more mental health therapists are now familiar with effective diagnostic and treatment strategies for OCD and related disorders. Our second annual OCD Awareness Week was a major success this year. Overall, groups in 13 different states hosted activities during the week of October 11-17, 2010 to educate their communities and the public as a whole about OCD and related disorders. OCD Awareness Week was also featured on Time.com and on New England Cable News. The week ended with a live, Internet broadcast of OCD Stories. Viewing parties were held in 9 states nation-wide and we tracked almost 500 unique hits to the live video streaming of the event. In Boston, it was standing room only as 175 people showed up to see many of the stories told live. Finally, the IOCDF continues its commitment to finding and promoting effective treatment for everyone with OCD and OCD related disorders. Research money comes from generous donors within the IOCDF community and this year a total
21
of $136,648 was raised. Thank you to all who contributed and to Dr. Sabine Wilhelm, the chair of the Grant Review Committee. The missions of the IOCDF remain the same: educate the public and professionals about OCD in order to raise awareness and improve the quality of treatment provided; support research into the causes of, and effective treatments for, OCD and related disorders; improve access to resources for those with OCD and their families; and advocate and lobby for the OCD community. I want to thank our donors, members, Board of Directors, Scientific Advisory Board members, affiliates and volunteers for their dedication, time and energy spent helping the IOCDF fulfill its very important mission.Sincerely,Jeff Szymanski, PhD Executive Director International OCD Foundation, Inc

CONFERENCE PLANNING COMMITTEE
In addition, there were kids and teens art therapy rooms led by art therapists from Rogers Memorial Hospital. This provided an opportunity for kids and teens with OCD or with someone with OCD in their family, to meet, support each other and feel part of a community. Additional activities in this year’s conference included a film festival, an expanded poster session, and an increase in support group options. This year’s keynote speech was given by Retired Lt. Colonel Shannon Shy. With the Pentagon just over a mile away from the conference hotel, we felt that Shannon’s Keynote Address: “My War with OCD: A Story of OCD in the Military” was an ideal choice. Dr. Jonathan Grayson, a member of IOCDF’s Scientific Advisory Board, and Director of the Anxiety & OCD Treatment Center of Philadelphia was given the Patricia Perkins Lifetime Achievement Award to acknowledge his decades long contributions to the IOCDF and those struggling with OCD.Over 50% of our attendees this year were first-time conference goers and evaluations completed by participants were very positive. People with OCD found out that they weren’t alone and learned about medications and techniques they could use to manage their OCD.
The IOCDF Board of Directors chose the Hyatt Regency Crystal City Hotel in Washington, DC as the venue for the 17th Annual IOCDF Conference from July 16-18, 2010. Attendance hit 1057, which is the second best turnout in Conference history. As determined by the Conference Planning Committee, the conference program included a a full range of topics related to OCD. There were more than 100 presentations, seminars, workshops and support groups at the Conference, covering every aspect of OCD and related disorders. On Thursday, July 15 before the official start of the Conference, the Foundation put on an Advanced Behavioral Therapy Training Institute (ABTTI), which was open to mental health professionals who treat OCD and related disorders. The title of the training, “Treating Religious Obsessions: Helping the Scrupulous Contend with Certain Uncertainties About the Uncertain Certainty”, was a 4 1/2 hour workshop given by Alec Pollard, PhD, the Director of the Anxiety Disorders Center at the Saint Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute. A record 69 professionals attended the ABTTI. Included in the general conference schedule were presentations for individuals suffering with OCD (adults, adolescents and children), family members and friends, treatment providers and researchers.

The IOCDF Board of Directors voted to hold three BTTI’s in 2010. The first of these was held February 14-16 in Brooklyn, NY, at the Downstate Medical Center, SUNY Typically BTTI’s are held Fridays - Sundays. Recognizing that this interferes with Jewish tradition, this BTTI was moved to a Sunday - Tuesday format and was co-hosted by Nefesh and Downstate Medical Center. This BTTI was sold out with 30 attendees.

Since 1994, the International OCD Foundation has been holding Behavior Therapy Training Institutes (BTTI) in different cities around the country. Led by the Chair of the BTTI faculty, C. Alec Pollard, PhD, the BTTI is a three-day intensive course on the diagnosis and treatment of OCD and related disorders designed by members of the Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board. The subjects covered in the first two days of didactics include an introduction to OCD and related disorders; effective treatment modalities including cognitive behavior therapy, especially Exposure and Response Prevention and medications that have been proven effective; and a section on treating children and adolescents with OCD. On the third day of the Institute, attendees break up into small groups of five or six. A member of the BTTI faculty leads each group. In these sessions attendees develop treatment plans for a current OCD patient they are working with. All attendees then have three follow up phone sessions with the leader of their group following the completion of the formal three-day Institute. Of note, we are able to keep the fee for the registrants very affordable due to significant contributions from Thomas and Eileen Lamberti.

gathered to hear many of the stories told in person. A newly forming OCD Texas affiliate used this as their kick off event, attracting 75 attendees. Rogers Memorial Hospital merged their annual Gala event with our broadcast and we watched Kristen Love tell her story from Wisconsin along with 400 attendees gathered at the hospital that night.
We want to thank our storytellers for doing such an amazing job of communicating the pain, perseverance, and hope that is associated with OCD. We received an enormous amount of feedback from the OCD community about how moved and inspired viewers were by each of these individuals’ stories. The broadcast was videotaped and is available online at: www.ocfoundation.org/awareness
The International OCD Foundation and associated groups from across the country came together during the week of October 11-17, 2010 to educate their communities and the public as a whole about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and its treatments. Several of the nation’s leading experts and pioneers in the field of OCD talked about how they work with those who suffer daily from this debilitating disorder. Drs. Aureen Wagner and Jonathan Abramowitz gave a talk in North Carolina while Dr. Fugen Neziroglu and her colleagues ran a one-day conference of workshops and talks in New York. A support group in Poughkeepsie, New York and the OCD Western Pennsylvania affiliate held story-telling events during the week. A group in Nova Scotia, Canada set up an OCD information booth and PeaceLove Studios held a Paint4Peace activity in Rhode Island. We generated 300 additional Facebook fans due to individuals donating their status updates, and individuals sent in Letters to the Editor that were printed in their local newspapers. OCD Awareness Week was also featured on Time.com and on New England Cable News. Overall, groups in 13 different states hosted activities during the week. The week ended with a live, Internet broadcast of OCD Stories.

Visitors come to the IOCDF website to learn about OCD, to find helpful resources, support groups and experienced treatment providers. In 2010 we updated our support group database providing a quick and easy way to search for support groups in one’s local area. We list approximately 250 support groups all over the country (as well as some international support groups we are aware of). The database features a Google search engine that generates an interactive map. In 2011, our treatment provider database will also be updated and contain the same features and flexibility as the support group database.
In 2010 we were also able to launch our new Hoarding Center (www.helpforhoarding.org). This was a collaboration between internationally recognized hoarding experts (and IOCDF Scientific Advisory Board members) Randy Frost, PhD and Gail Steketee, PhD and IOCDF Web Developer Fran Harrington. Hoarding has been a hidden disorder for many years. Before the early 1990’s, there was little research on hoarding. Since then, however, interest has increased dramatically among research scientists and clinicians. Recent media coverage of hoarding has also increased awareness and interest among sufferers, family members, and human service personnel who often deal with the problem. The IOCDF Hoarding Center was designed to provide the most up-to-date and accurate information about hoarding and its treatment.
WEBSITEIn the beginning of 2010, the Winter newsletter contained articles about updates to our website as well as various themes involved in the treatment of OCD (ethics and ERP, integrating technology into CBT for OCD, and community versus office based treatment). The Spring 2010 newsletter reviewed the highlights of the Annual Conference and contained articles about different perspectives within the OCD community (children who have a parent with OCD, patient turned therapist) as well as a promising new treatment for OCD: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. In the Summer, the newsletter recapped the successes of the conference, featured an essay contest winning article by 11-year old Max Mickenberg, an announcement of 2010 Research Grant Award winners, and articles on OCD subtypes and Inference-Based Therapy for OCD. In the Fall 2010 issue, we reviewed OCD Awareness Week events, and ran articles on compulsive homework, OCD and depression, and the importance of participation in research studies. In every issue we included first hand accounts by those struggling with OCD and their family members. There were updates from IOCDF affiliates, opportunities for individuals to participate in ongoing OCD related research, and information about resources including intensive OCD treatment programs and our Behavior Therapy Training Institutes.

Since 1986, the IOCDF has reached out to tens of thousands of people with OCD, their families, service providers, policymakers and others to raise awareness about the disorder, to help connect people with OCD to treatment providers, and to advance research into more effective treatments. In 2008, the IOCDF launched the Speakers Bureau to continue these goals and missions of the IOCDF. The IOCDF Speakers Bureau includes people with OCD who understand firsthand the challenges of this disorder, and the importance of effective treatment. Among them are Jeff Bell and Elizabeth McIngvale who also serve as National Spokespersons for the Foundation, helping to spread our message that while the challenges are great, there is real hope for people with OCD. Other speakers include renowned medical and research experts who have treated people with OCD and/or engaged in cutting edge research to understand the causes of the disorder and to find more effective treatments. All of our speakers are trained to provide informative presentations on OCD to a variety of audiences.

Members of the IOCDF Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) are among the best clinicians and investigators in the United States who treat and/or conduct research on OCD and related disorders. SAB members are involved in the IOCDF in multiple ways including participation on a Grant Review Committee to review OCD research proposals submitted for possible grant funding, participation as speakers in the Annual Conference, participation as faculty for the Behavior Therapy Training Institute, and contributing articles to the quarterly newsletter. In addition, much of the new material on our website was contributed by members of our SAB, led by the Chair of our Clinical Advisory Committee – Bradley Riemann, PhD from Rogers Memorial Hospital. Thank you to Dr. Riemann and all of our SAB members for their help this year. Below is a list of the rest of our SAB membership for 2010:
