SECRETARY'S REPORT

Ladies and Gentlemen, Your Committee has much pleasure in submitting for your approval the 80th Annual Report and Statement of Receipts and Payments for season 2009/10. The past season can on at least 4 levels be regarded as very successful: On Field: Dunstan Shield and Under 10 JD Norman Premiers, Runners up in Veterans C and Under 14 A & B Grades as well as semi finalists in Veterans B, Under 16C, Under 14C and Under 12A Grades. and; Off Field: More social functions at the club rooms resulting in a better social environment and improved financial returns, and Administration: A new committee led by Peter Knox and being named Joint Best Administered club by the ECA. Participation: 273 Players represented MACC during the season, including 120 Junior Players, Jeff Mollison lead all comers with 26 appearances and Luke Galtieri and Lachlan Power turned out 23 times each. Your committee worked hard lobbying the Whitehorse Council for the installation of a water tank, new lighting for the ground and renovation and extension of the centre wicket (both completed post season). Improvements such as these are the fruition of a number of years work by the your committee and that of the Surrey Park Lacrosse Club. We need to thank in particular the Canterbury Ashburton and Surrey Hills Community Banks, Dick Menting (Chairman) and Nick Coker (Manager) for their generous support of our projects. Thanks go to the members of the committee, captains, coaches, team managers and volunteers for their efforts throughout the season but, in particular, Mike Massey who took on the 3rd XI Captaincy and Chairman of Selectors role and Jeff Mollison as 4th XI Captain, Veterans Coordinator and delegate and Club statistician who have both given their time well beyond the normal call of duty. It was particularly gratifying (especially to me!) to see Harvey Jones take over as Vice President Juniors and join the committee. This role is a demanding one and requires extensive planning and organisation to get 10 teams on the field at the right time and in the right places. Harvey’s performance in this role has been exemplary and he has motivated and encouraged others to take up positions and take responsibility. The improved results in terms of premierships, semi final and grand final appearances speak for themselves.

Thanks to everyone who has submitted reports this season, I thought they were great. Tims 1st XI report, although excellent, was submitted too late to be eligible for the secretary’s award. Peter Knox has also done well and although this years report is shorter than last years Tolstoy-like epic on the colts he unfortunately did not keep within the word count requirements for eligibility. Lachlan Power’s opening gambit of “It was an alright season….” was impressive. Harvey’s random use of the words schadenfreude and zeitgeist shows he obviously has no idea what they mean. Greg McKie’s description of Jack Wrights “inimitable batting style” plus his description of Col Jennings and Peter Combs as “spin twins” was entertaining, however…the inaugural “Chris Dunning” award for the best report submitted goes to…. Gus Mclean for his excellent 5th XI report. Gus always spins a ripping yarn and this season’s use of the word pusillanimous when describing the 5ths batting gets the gong. Congratulations to all the trophy winners for season 2008/09. The winners of the various awards for the season are as follows;

Mont Albert Cricket Club President’s Report 2009/10

Season 2009/10 will be long remembered as one of on field success and transition. Success was achieved with an outstanding performance by our 1st XI winning the club’s 10th Dunstan Shield1, and not to forget our U10 Red Juniors who also bagged a Premiership. Our players were recognised with the naming of Tim Wright as the Captain of the ECA team of the year together with the selection of Agrani Bhosale and Tim Hargreaves. Tim Wright was also runner up in both the Dunstan Medal and the Association batting averages; rarely has a Captain led more effectively from the front. The retirement of Kevin Ruljancich, Chris Dunning and Richard Barker (as Treasurer) as long serving President, Secretary and Treasurer created significant challenges for the incoming Administration. I’m pleased to say that with the addition of Shahen Patel (Treasurer), Allen Burton, Harvey Jones and continuing contributions from, Michael Massey Jeff Mollison and Nick Westerman; together with Rick’s guiding hand as Secretary your Committee has answered the challenge and is operating as an effective and creative team. This was recognised with our club winning the best administered club at the ECA Presentation evening2. This could not have been achieved without the advice and ongoing support of the immediate prior office bearers. Thanks to Chris and Kevin for their huge contribution over many years – we stand on the shoulders of giants. In another highlight, Col Jennings was presented with Life Membership for his many years of service as a player and Chairman of Selectors. There is no tougher role in the club (just ask Michael Massey), Col success in the role was due to his diplomacy, balance and foresight; rarely showing his frustration with late withdrawals and unexplained absences. Following a strong year the clubs finances remain sound. I recommend you inspect the accounts later in this annual report. One important reason for this is our range of sponsors; all are greatly appreciated for their ongoing contribution, this is particularly true of Bendigo Bank who generously funded our water tank. Under Dick Menting’s Chairmanship, Bendigo Bank not only supports our club but also a wide range of sporting clubs and associations, building social capital and community well being, I recommend their Banking services to all members and supporters. In his first year as Treasurer Shahen should be pleased with the result. Our financial position and strong relationship with Whitehorse City Council and the Surrey Park Lacrosse Club has allowed us to undertake a number of capital improvements which will benefit players over many years to come, these include renovation of Mont Albert reserve playing surface, installation of a 45,000 litre water tank, refurbishment of our turf nets, contributing to wicket resurfacing at Surrey Park North East (5th XI), installation of flood lighting3 at Mont Albert Reserve, new refrigerators, addition of 2 new centre wickets and refurbishment of centre wicket and surrounds and a new web site (thanks to Chris Mirabella). In moving from Treasurer to Secretary Rick Barker also handed over his leadership role of the Junior Division of the club to Harvey Jones. Harvey has rapidly put his stamp on the job, recruiting Kiel Johnson, Colin Orchard, and Mark Nothdurft as Junior team coaches (with help from Paul Devine), as

well as a group of enthusiastic parent coach/managers. It’s been impressive to see how our younger Senior players are taking up Junior XI Coaching roles and doing such a good job at it. Our juniors continue to be vibrant & energy filled, producing talented and highly skilled players. Amongst a talented group two standouts this year were, Chris Hargreaves and Richard Hanson. Chris won the U16a batting average (68.60) and the AG Grace Medal for best all round player in the U16A Grade, while Richard won the U14A batting average with an impressive 104.00. Chris Jones led our Milo in-2-Cricket group of some 40 potential Australian players for both the Men’s and Women’s Test Team. Smiles all round here, particularly when Phil Woods fired up the BBQ for mandatory snag in bread after a tough training session. At the other end of the spectrum we said farewell to the Veterans Blues team (for the time being at least) and welcomed an over 60’s XI to the club (should they be called the whites after the color of their hair?) with Greg McKie organising and supplying the necessary pain killers to get this XI onto the field. It is rare club that can offer participation in our game from under 6 to over 70! Cricket is a game for life and you can spend your life at Mont Albert. The Veterans enjoyed continued success with a Grand Final appearance and Finals participation – not a bad result. Much of the credit for maintaining the Vets and ensuring teams turn out goes to Jeff Mollison, the Vets will need to take a higher profile in organising themselves to ensure teams are balanced and well organised, far too much work has fallen on Molly’s shoulders over a number of years. Our Colts team again performed creditably in the Mercantile Sunday competition this year. Following our first up premiership last year we found the going a little tougher as we were rarely able to field our best team. Emerging players to shine were Lachlan Power, Tim Wilton, Andrew Padbury, Richard Hanson and Luke Galteri. No Club can sustain success simply through the quality of it’s on field performance and player base, much work goes on off field and during the week - as one club luminary4 has been heard to say “Judge a Club by it’s afternoon teas, how clean the toilets are and it’s honour boards”. On all three, and much more, we tick the box thanks to the tireless work of our off field crew. Jack Burch and Roger with assistance from Richard and their apprentice (KR) do a great job – even if they do indulge in a bit of schadenfreude while Kevin does the vacuuming. As it should be, the prevailing zeitgeist around the club is strongly positive and forward looking. However we face a number of challenges. On field we need to develop our player depth to ensure we are more than simply competitive, as a first step on this road the 2nd XI must raise the bar and look to a Premiership in the coming season putting pressure on all 1st XI players to maintain performance levels. Improved performances from the 3rd, 4th and 5th Xis are all achievable outcomes. WAGSO’s 5 need to be brought more fully into the club, remember happy partners make for happy cricketers! We must do better on the sponsorship front, with our large current and past player base we are a very attractive proposition to potential sponsors. Better transitioning our Junior cricketers into Senior must be a priority !

As a goal for the Club we must aim to repeat last year’s performance and aim for Finals success from our other XIs. Go Monts ! That’s it; you’ve made it to the end. In cricket, Peter Knox President

1st XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT In preparing to write this season report, I took the opportunity to read the 08/09 report to fully comprehend where we have come from. If you will indulge me I will quote from that report; “Season 2008/2009 was on the whole disappointing for the first XI for a club with high expectations on performance. Although many had written us off before a ball was bowled, I firmly believe the group we had and still have is capable of challenging in Dunstan Shield. A more disciplined approach by the playing group is required to get the results we are capable of. If you examine the improvement from grand finalists East Doncaster and Hawthorn, both teams committed as groups and played disciplined cricket for the majority of their seasons. However I believe our club at the very least matches both of those clubs for talent.” The season began early with a preseason meeting of the senior playing group to discuss ideas on how we as a club would move forward and improve. Many of the ideas and goals from that meeting were implemented and achieved and others could have been better followed through. Overall the players left with a committed approach to improving the club as a whole and playing a disciplined brand of cricket throughout. The season started with a somewhat undermanned Mont Albert defeating last season’s Grand Finalists Hawthorn by 18 runs. In a disciplined display two new inclusion to the team stood out. English import Robert Ellis (another from the long list of Pannal CC who has also played at MACC) made a magnificent 72 after some indifferent pre-season form. Chris Moore also starred with 2/19 after graduating from the Colts premiership team the year before. The hectic first half of the season saw the first XI turn at Christmas with 5 wins and 2 loses. The key aspects where strong batting by many in our batting order, providing us with depth. This was backed up by our bowling which was disciplined and sticking to our plan. Wickets were well spread and shared amongst all those who bowled. Pre-Christmas highlights including Tim Wright’s 113 not out versus Deepdene, Agrani Bhosale 115 not out versus Donvale and Tim Hargreaves 101 not out versus North Balwyn. Many spectators however believe Bhosale’s 65 not out of 28 balls against Deepdene to be one of the best innings they have ever seen a Mont Albert batsmen complete. The draw after Christmas appeared tough on paper, with some Email correspondence not overly confident of a strong finish. “By my reckoning MACC might (should??) win 2 of the remaining 4 games....” was the beginning of an email from one supporter. I won’t say who it was from but perhaps that person doesn’t know everything about cricket! The Canterbury match is worth mentioning as Mont Albert amassed 368 off their allotted overs. This may be a club record for the First XI. It is also interesting to note the Canterbury replied with 304 of their own and were bowled out with 7 overs to go. Another strong all round performance from youngster Moore, including the prized scalp of the opposition star player, former Ryder medallist Steve Spoljaric. Round 9 saw Mont Albert exorcise some demons by defeating Mulgrave and in the process chasing down 176 (7 wickets down). It was a defining match in the players belief in our processes, which saw us send Mulgrave in on a good wicket because the bowlers wanted to bowl (and clearly a lack of intelligence by the skipper). Big Roy Taylor delivered with four wickets and was supported by Dougal

Yencken who was exciting with two wickets in consecutive deliveries (a feat he would have repeated in the Grand Final if not for some generous adjudicating) to rip the heart out of Mulgrave’s strong top order.However the standout performance of the match was Tim Hargreaves with 3 for 37 and 60 not out to lead the boys to victory. This was the most mature performance Hargreaves has ever delivered for the club and many believe not before time as he is in his mid 30’s. It is interesting to note that since becoming a father just before Christmas Tim had mellowed and put in some top shelf performances! It was difficult to imagine we could top the Mulgrave win, but defeating Ashburton outright by 9 wickets goes pretty close. Hargreaves was again magnificent taking 7 for 17 leading the way to bowling Ashburton out for 36 on day one. From that point on there was really only one possible result, but credit to the boys for sticking to the task and ensuring the win. This result was celebrated by many MACC players past and present and put us into a good position to secure a top two finish (which would prove crucial) as we entered the finals series. The last round saw us fall 10 runs short of Bulleen, however it was felt that conditions had not been in our favour and the boys were confident of matching it with the fancied Bulleen line up, which was important as we would end up meeting them the following weekend in the Semi-Final. Bulleen needed the win to sneak into the four and a draw out at Mulgrave allowed us to maintain our position on top of the ladder to importantly gain a home final. It also unusually resulted in both semi-finals being a replay of round 11 matches. The semi-final saw us make 8 for 203 off 80 overs in difficult conditions over two rain interrupted days. We thought this was enough with a slow outfield and plenty of moisture around. Bulleen were required to face a feisty session on the Sunday night, which included night watchmen, a wicket, several light appeals and plenty of crowd involvement to liven up the match. Unfortunately a major rain event saw water get under the covers and made play impossible on the Monday (public holiday). Mont Albert were through to the Grand Final and deserved to be with strong performances through-out the home and away season and by finishing on the most amount of points. Bulleen were disappointed but should be congratulated for their conduct through the semi final weekend. The grand final was against the perennially strong Mulgrave Cricket Club. Successive grand final loses to them during their streak of five in a row still hurt some of our players. After losing the toss Mulgrave batted solidly (perhaps after getting away with an edge in the first over) but then our bowlers ripped through the Mulgrave batting line-up. Mulgrave limped to 8 for 90 before a rear guard response from the tail managed to get them to 173. Roy Taylor took 4 for 29, the ever green Danny McLaughlin 4 for 39 and Dougal Yencken 2 for 34 in a magnificent display of team bowling. After losing Ellis early Travis Baker and Tim Wright combined in a slow but solid partnership of 95 before Travis was dismissed for a disciplined 25. Enter Bhosale and a quick fire 38 to all but take the game away from Mulgrave. Unfortunately a few late wickets flattered Mulgrave’s performance as MACC passed them six wickets down to become Dunstan Shield Premiers. Tim Wright batted through the innings for 93 not out. The premiership is a worthy reward for the players who have worked for several years to achieve this feat. Congratulations Tim Wright, Rob Ellis, Agrani Bhosale, Tim Hargreaves, Jack Baker, Paul Devine (3 time premiership player), Shahen Patel, Danny McLaughlin and Roy Taylor. That medal is yours forever.

It is important to acknowledge the other players who represented the First XI in 2009/2010 as their contributions were vital in the ultimate success. So to Paul Miller, Chris Moore, Andrew Crough, Will Bull, Howard Bertus, Peter Mirabella, James Gear and Lachlan MacQuarie thank you. It is also a great reward to our supporters, who certainly always support our players in getting out on the field by cleaning rooms, cooking BBQ’s, Administration duties and much more. So thank you Roger Smith, Jack Wright, Peter Knox, Richard Barker, Peter Burchall, KR, Richard Harding and Anthony Clyde to name a few. This support is greatly appreciated by all the players. A special mention must go to our scorer Peter Coombs for his efforts once again through-out the season, his work helps to reinforce team plans in the player’s minds. Mont Albert Cricket Club took a step forward last year, however all members of the club should demand more from each other. This does not mean training longer hours, cleaning the clubrooms more often, etc.. It means being an active member of MACC, and training smarter, helping fellow club members, limiting your unavailabilties, informing of absence and helping out when you can. I believe we have an opportunity to have both the First XI and Second XI playing deep into finals in 2010/2011. If this happens it will be more than likely other sides will also be competing, but will only come from a commitment to improvement from all. Once again I would like to thank the committee for allowing me to captain the first XI, an honour I am forever grateful for and genuinely humbled by. Go Monts! Tim Wright

2ND XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT On paper the 2nds had a disappointing season finishing 9th, however we were only two games away from 3rd place and can take away many positives from our performances. The first of these is the incredible year had by John Nothdurft who scored 381 runs at 54.4 including an unbeaten hundred in a one day match. He batted us out of many a sticky situation and regularly put the team in a winning position. James Gear was another who had a great season; his best for the club so far scoring 284 runs including a scintillating run-a-ball 77 against highly ranked Glen Iris who we went on to beat. Pete Mirabella had a breakout year, terrorizing opposition batsmen with pace, bounce and accuracy. In the last 4 Games he lead the attack taking 12 Wickets at an average of 20 including a 5 wicket hall in the last match against Bulleen. A special mention should go to Danny McLaughlin who has led the attack in the 2nds for several seasons. With great performances all year, he forced his way into the 1s and played an integral role in a winning grand final side. Well deserved for a player who hasn't bowled a bad ball in years! Looking back, we had some disappointing losses, going down to Mazenod in a game that was decided on the last ball, as well as narrow defeats to Hawthorn and Donvale. Despite this, the team played some great cricket right to the end of the season with wins against St Kevins and Bulleen ending their finals hopes, and showing that the Monty boys were just as good if not better then the teams in the top 4. If not for a few opportunities which we failed to seize, this team could well have played in successive grand finals and all players should be proud of their efforts over the year. I think that as a team we will have learnt a lot from the past season and can look forward to what promises to be an exciting 2010/2011. Hopefully we'll be back at the top of the table with several players again knocking on he door of 1s selection. Nick Westerman

4TH XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT It was pleasing to see the continued development of a number of promising juniors who played in our side throughout the season. It was great to see them contribute, and I look forward to seeing them all rise through the ranks. Tom Natoli, Chris Jackson, Eddie Plant, Ben Chipp, Nick Stragalinos, Daniel Bernardone, Luke Galtieri, Xavier Siebel, Tim Wilton, Paul Gear, Mitchell Smart and Tom Massey all performed very well and they represent the future of this club. It was another difficult season on the field. Once again we played against a number of second eleven sides and a first eleven side, and had many selections worries prior to Christmas. We did put in some good performances but could not get the points. We ran Richmond City (who finished top) close in Rd 3. We were soundly beaten by Burwood and annihilated by Marcellin when bundled out for 45 after being 9/18. We were comfortable beaten by first eleven side Latrobe Uni in Rd 4 when fielding a very young side. However they did not show us any respect in this game, and so it was pleasing when we beat them in Rd 6 for our first win of the year and knocked them off top spot. We had our chances to beat Old Carey in Rd 8, when we got them 9 down with them still needing another 18 runs. We finished the season off with away wins against Donvale in Rds 9 & 12. A close loss at Deepdene in Rd 10 when in a good batting position was followed by another close loss to Richmond City at home in Rd 11. It would be nice for the 4ths to beat Deepdene and Richmond City next season, particularly Deepdene as I felt their captain and one or two players did not play the game in the right spirit both times. (Certainly Latrobe did not play in the right spirit, but that’s another story). We completed the season with a huge 204 runs win against Burwood seconds at home. The pleasing thing was bundling them out for only 43. It was an absolute joy to see Hal bowl beautifully in claiming 10 wickets in the match. Also it was a delight to see the continued improvement of Luke Galtieri behind the stumps. His performance that day was sensational. So 4 wins and a draw with 8 losses was our season, finishing 7th out of the 8 sides. Congratulations to Allen Burton on his fine season with the bat in winning the batting award, and to David Stent who bowled consistently well throughout the season in winning the bowling averages. I would like to thank the support, encouragement and assistance I received from Michael Massey, Tim Wright and Rob Grumont. I would like to acknowledge the fantastic job Jack Wright, Roger Smith and Peter Burchall did all season, preparing kits, drinks, conducting training and helping on Thursday and Saturday. All players conducted themselves admirably, whilst playing in the 4ths, brought nice afternoon teas, and could hold their heads high on every performance. They represented the club with distinction and I was proud of everyone’s effort. And finally I would like to congratulate Tim Wright and all his players in the first eleven on the fantastic performance in winning the club’s 10th senior premiership in beating Mulgrave. Well done guys it was the highlight of the season and it has brought great pride and joy to everyone at the club. JEFF MOLLISON

5TH XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT The 2009-10 season was mixed. This year we played up a grade and we were competitive but we finished fifth by a long way. In the second half of the season, we defeated Burwood and Heathmont, who finished in the top four, but we also lost to sides below us. In short we were inconsistent during the year. There was no superlative batsman this year. The games that we won were ones where each player contributed with the bat. A few of the highlights this year include Ralph Hadden, who batted consistently in the top order. A number of times we lost quick wickets and he steadied the ship. Hugh Cowan had an up and down season but was making continual improvement. In the last game he made 102 not out - his maiden century. James Wright, despite injuring his shoulder this year, turned into a reliable opener. Overall I thought the batting was still fairly pusillanimous but at the same time I thought that it was also starting to improve. The 20 and 30 that players were making need to be converted into 50s and this will make us stronger. The bowlers worked hard all season. A few of the highlights was Luke Pich 5/10 in the first game. David Stent was miserly and rightly earned his spot in the 4th Eleven. Lachlan McLean hit a purple patch and took 7/52 during the season. One of the things we need to work on as a bowling unit is reducing the number of wides and no-balls. This year we maintained a good standard for our fielding. We were tried hard and were positive and supported our bowlers well. This seems to be an area of our game that has incrementally improved each year. One of the unusual aspects for the 09-10 season was that we had a number of father-son combinations who played with us during the year. The combinations included Ralph and Sam Hadden. Ben and Graeme Chipp, Laurie and Eddie Wordsworth, Tom and Xavier Siebel and Lachlan and Nathan McLean. (Nathan was not part of the 11 but he filled in a number of times as 12th man when we were short, and managed to take a catch off his Dad Lachlan’s bowling). There may be a record in this somewhere for the club. I would like to thank the players who made themselves available to play for this season. I would also like to thank Mike Massey who stepped into the role of chairman of selectors this year. We had a few games where we struggled to get players but on balance numbers seemed strong. I also want to thank Jack, Roger and Peter preparing the drinks, cups and other assorted equipment for the team each Saturday. Lastly I would like to thank my wife, Fiona, who looks forward to rainy Saturdays during the summer. GUS MCLEAN

COLTS XI REPORT It was an alright season for Mont Albert Colts with 8 wins and 7 losses for the season. Mont Albert started the year off with a bang beating Parkdale United by 203 runs at Elgar Park. There were outstanding efforts from A. Burton who made 70 runs and C. Moore who made 62 runs. The highlights for the bowling attack were J. Mollison with 5/17 off 7 over’s, also there was C. Moore and L. Power who chipped in a few wickets each. In Round 4 the boys had another win beating East Malvern at Elgar Park. The best batters for the day were M. Wilton with 56 not out and good innings by T. Wilton, P. Knox and J. Mollison all making a solid 20 odd. The bowling performances came from T. Wilton getting 3/23 off 9 over’s and an amazing performance from J. Mollison getting 3/2 off 5 over’s with 4 maidens. Round 5 was a disappointing round for Mont Albert being defeated by Coles Sharks at Righetti Oval. There were some highlights from our batters with K. Ruljancich making 60 not out and the Wilton father and son M. Wilton and T. Wilton both making a good 27 each. The bowling wasn’t that flash by Mont Albert only three people getting wickets T. Wilton, L. Power and S. Knox getting their highest scoring batsmen out on 90. Round 6 was a good round beating Mt. Waverley at Mont Albert Reserve. The batters for the day that did the most damage were M. Wilton who made 71 runs and N. Gazdowicz who made 55 not out. There were three good bowlers on the day and they were M. Wilton, L. Power and E. Wordsworth who got 2 wickets each. Round 8 Mont Albert versus Malvern was a loss with not many stand outs except for one P. Mirabella who got 4/30 off 9 over’s. Round 9 and 10 were both great wins with a stand out of C. Moore getting 78 and 76 in each game. In a hard game against East Malvern which we lost, we had L. Roberts who stepped up to try and create a win by getting 3/12 off 9 over’s. Round 14 was a great win by Mont Albert over Mt. Waverley winning by 194 runs at Trinity SG. The batting highlights were from N. Westerman making 94, H. Jones making 55 runs and a really fast 50 from D. Yencken. The bowling highlight was J. Mollison who got 3/21 off 8 over’s. It was a great way to end the season with Mont Albert winning over Mt. Waverley at Elgar Park. The best batters for the day were P. Mirabella making 62 and A. Burton making 72 not out. There were also some contributions in runs with C. Hastings and L. Power both making 20’s. The season had some ups and downs with wins and losses but there were many highlights to the season. To sum it up, Mont Albert played hard and was unlucky to make the finals. By Lachlan Power

VETERANS GOLD XI REPORT The 2009-10 season saw a changing of the guard in the A Division Veterans competition following the Blues no longer being able to field a side. The Golds, having made the B Division final in 2008-09, accepted the challenge to move into the higher grade despite missing some of their successful players from past seasons. The challenge started very well, with a comprehensive win over Donvale in round 1 (6/172 def 100 all out). This, however, turned out to be the “high water mark” for the season with another win proving too elusive, despite being competitive in most matches. Batting consistency proved the greatest challenge, with only John Nothdurft (145 runs at an average of 145.0) and Rob Howells (100 runs at 20.0) getting to the veterans’ reward of retirement by reaching 40 runs in an innings throughout the season. Jeff Mollison, Andrew Kenyon, Grant Jackson, John Adgemis, Martin Hardy and Wayne Harris also chipped in with handy scores on their day. The bowling was solid throughout the season supported by, what could be considered by veteran standards, brilliant fielding. Rohan Edwards (6 wickets at an average of 13.7) led the attack, ably supported by Martin Hardy (6 wickets at 19.2), Grant Jackson (5 wickets at 15.0) and Andrew Corbett (5 wickets at 16.8). Luke Pich, Don Thompson and Jeff Mollison also chipped in with handy spells, with Rob Howells valiantly toiling into the breeze; the penalty in veterans cricket for being slim and fit! Congratulations to all who participated throughout the season, and for the never say die attitude despite failing to feature in the finals action.

VETERANS GREY (Over 60s) XI REPORT As there were so few colours left to choose from in deciding on what to call this newly created team, the obvious answer was ‘The Greys’. An Over 60’s competition has been operating in Melbourne for several years. Unfortunately, all the teams competing represent associations, meaning that a purely Club side would always be at a distinct disadvantage. Not deterred, MACC confidently decided to play a few social games. The MACC’s standard of batting and bowling was reasonable, but things such as fielding, throwing and chasing the ball do NOT improve with age! The real attraction of these games is however, the social aspect. The after-match festivities and socialization were obviously enjoyed by all participants. The first game was against the Mornington Peninsula at their magnificent ground at Hastings. It was an effort to get a team onto the field and we had to play a couple of ‘ring-ins’ (ie under-age) to finally make it. A rollicking opening partnership between Jack Wright and Robbie Grumont got MACC off to a flying start. Jack batted in his inimitable style. It made no difference where the ball was pitched or what length it was, the same stroke was played – a solid thump over square leg. The Mornington players confessed that they had never seen anything like it before. The following players were non-plussed by the lack of pace of the bowling and the MACC scoring rate dived. Colin Jennings came in, saying that he had not faced a ball in four years. His first ball produced a powerful cover drive straight to the fence. Late on, Peter Burchall somehow managed to turn a slow three into a fast one and then stood out of his crease inviting the inevitable runout. Peter later said that this was all part of a cunning plan - his exit enabled last man Tony Hargreaves to take strike. His first ball disappeared out of the ground. He regained the strike in the last over with three balls to go. The first disappeared into the surrounding forest. The next ball would have produced an easy single, but his partner told Tony to stay on strike. The last ball was aimed towards Western Port Bay and may have got there if a tree had not intervened. Mornington Peninsula never came to terms with the required scoring rate and they were completely bottled up by the ‘spin-twins’ Colin Jennings and Peter Coombs. Colin spun the same yarn about not bowling a ball for years. First ball – a wicket and another followed three balls later. MACC 7/150 (Wright 30 ret, Grumont 33 ret.) def MPCA 8/127 (Coombs 3/18, Jennings 2/11). The Australian Cricket Society at home was our next opponent. Unfortunately they stacked their side and included a few under-age ‘guns’. MACC suffered because a few of our better players from the previous game cried off. A quick-fire opening partnership between Jack Wright and Ralph Hadden was promising. The scoring rate then slowed dramatically and only Don Gear displayed any form. A score of 106 was never likely to be enough, but with Tony Dwyer ‘on song’, the ACS struggled in turn. Colin Jennings took one of the great slips catches off Tony – a dive far to his right and the catch grabbed just off the turf. The back-up bowling was not as tight however and the ACS cantered to an easy victory. MACC 5/106 (Gear 31 ret, Hadden 25) were defeated by ACS 5/107 (Coombs 2/11).

The last game did not happen – the usual excuses were offered such as: ‘I have to wash my hair’, ‘my wife will not let me play’, ‘it is my turn to look after the grandchildren’ or “I have to pick up my hearing aid/walking frame’. Only five players were left standing, so the game was cancelled. In each the two games we played, the team’s collective experiences were about 2,100 club games and over 260 playing years at MACC. I doubt whether a more experienced team has ever played for MACC – the figures will be better (worse) when we saddle up again in 2010/11! Greg McKie

MONT ALBERT JUNIORS SEASON REVIEW 2008-09 Unlike senior cricket, success in junior cricket is not defined by a winning culture and we certainly do not seek shadenfreude. That is not to say that winning games is insignificant, because this is a competitive sport after all. But junior cricket is about more than that and we set out to make this so at MACC. I was fortunate to have the assistance of a number of willing parents and current players. This group of 20 or so core helpers, combined with over 40 others who helped out when they could, enabled MACC to go a long way towards achieving our major goals, and I thank them greatly. The under 10 group had a fantastic season in 2009/10 led by Mark Tolley, Mark Tucker, Sean Wynne and Rick Calabrese. The squad of two teams included many first year players that grasped the opportunity of playing competitive cricket with both hands. Both teams finished the season with more wins than losses and the Red team was able to cap off the season with the premiership. The U10 season can be split into three distinct sections. At the beginning of the season, everyone’s batting reflected the zeitgeist with both teams adopting a 20/20 attitude and the bowling and fielding appeared piecemeal. Just before Christmas the pattern changed, there was more correct batting, more not outs and less runs scored. In saying that, there was also less runs scored against as the team started to mesh together in the field, and the boys discovered the benefits of working as a team. In February the runs started to flow again, however this reflected an appreciation of placement, good running and batting smarts. To add to this, the teams looked like units in the field, backing up throws, talking every ball and bowling accurately. The group of parents involved with the team should be congratulated on this shift throughout the season, which I believe is the result of maturity and better technique in batting, bowling and fielding. The U12 group had an equally impressive season led by Wayne Harris, Phil Hartley, Hal Jones, Anne Graham, Jon Smiles and Paul Young. In each team there was considerable improvement in batting, bowling, fielding and wicket keeping (an area that was singled out at the start of the season as a key aspect to improve). Towards the end of the season, the C and B teams were taking more wickets, and making much more runs than at the beginning of the season. This was likely the consequence of better technique that was vividly evident in their game play. The A team also improved technique but added a bit of grunt to their play that saw them win some very close matches and allow them to play in a semi final. The most pleasing fact is that each team played as a team and appeared to develop a strong bond with each other. In a reflection of their maturity a number of players from each team played U14’s all season and Sam Dawborn and Josh Devine were selected in the ECA U12 representative team. Each of the U14 teams made the finals led by Mark Nothdurft, Tim Bonnett, Colin Orchard, Richard Kitching, Paul Young and John Stragalinos. While the B and A teams made the grand final, neither team was able to bring home a premiership. This success was a phenomenal effort considering the B team was predominantly first year players, the A team struggled in the same grade the previous year, and the C team struggled to field 11 players each week. The boys ought to be congratulated. Michael Borland, Jonathon Cooper, Tome Massey, Andrew Padbury and Nick Stragalinos were selected in the ECA U14 representative team, and Richard Hansen was selected in the inner east Emus representative side. The U16 coaching staff of Kiel Johnsen, Harvey Jones, Chris Mirabella, Dave Power, Colleen Massey and Julie Power, placed a lot of emphasis on leadership. Although the A team did not have the best season in terms of wins, the coaching group felt that they achieved their goal of fostering a group of future leaders of the club, including captain Tim Wilton and vice captain Edward Plant. The C team provided the club with another finals berth, and although they were beaten in the semi final, they

managed to push the undefeated Marcellin team to the wire. The co-captains Tom Massey and Luke Galtieri (playing up from U14’s) were instrumental in the semi-final and significantly improved their on-field leadership throughout the year. Congratulations to (Reg) Will Cooper and Chris Hargreaves for making the U16 ECA representative team. I aim to measure success on improvement and leadership development and I believe we have gone a long way to meeting our goals this past season. I’d like to thank the support we received from the club and, in particular, the personal guidance I received from Richard (the silver fox) Barker.
