DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
General / Introduction
The history of Department of Civil Engineering starts with the establishment of an engineering
college in Karachi in 1922. With time the Department has grown into a modern teaching
Department incorporating latest knowledge generated in various fields of civil engineering and
using allied teaching aids. The research culture has been established and flourishing with the
collaboration of contemporary universities and institutions across the world. The Department
was able to acquire directly and indirectly, a funding of US$ 1.0 million approximately under
various international and national projects.
The Department has started a new undergraduate degree programme in Construction
Engineering. The Department has shown significant progress in research in the area of
earthquake engineering over the last several years. It is part of several projects related to capacity
building funded by UNDP and UNESCO on topics related to earthquake engineering,
seismology and impact of tsunamis. This has led to the establishment of the Department of
Earthquake Engineering. The newly formed department will offer postgraduate programme in
Earthquake Engineering and Seismology from 2012.
The Department takes the pride in its students who are spread all across the globe holding key
positions in professional organizations and contributing academically, professionally and through
cutting edge research.

Undergraduate Programme
The Department of Civil Engineering is administering four-year undergraduate
programmes in Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering.
New faculty members appointed during the year comprising of 3 Professors, 4 Associate
Professors and 4 Lecturers.
Thirteen faculty members (Seven by funding from University Development Programme
& Six by self-funding) are on leave abroad to UK, USA, Italy and Malaysia for Ph.D.
studies. Two Research Scholars in UK have recently completed their Ph.D. studies and
have joined the Department.
This year 212 students were admitted in First Year in Batch 2011-12 in Civil Engineering
and 20 students were admitted in Construction Engineering.
New Advanced Material Testing facility is in the commissioning phase. It is equipped
with state-of-the-art equipment and is one of its kinds in the region. It has 1m thick
reaction floor and 1.3m thick reaction wall which will be used for testing of structures
subjected to vertical and lateral loads. The laboratory has the facility to test pre-stressed
girders of up to 110 ft. lengths. The facility is now being administered by the newly
formed Department of Earthquake Engineering.
Software training on AUTOCAD, REVIT and MS-Project has been conducted for about
270 undergraduate students.
The performance indicators and attendance record of theory and practical/design classes
for both undergraduate and graduate programmes are being analysed extensively with

upgraded version of software in Oracle developed by Department and the University
portal system.
Internal audit report rated satisfactory status of the Department. One observation was
received which has been complied with. On the basis of the analysis of the customer feed
back, performance of the department have been rated as excellent.
The analyses of the customer feedback (session 2010-2011) of first year undergraduate
students batch 2010-11 have rated the Department as Excellent to Average. Analyses of
customer feed back for second, third and final year students batches 2009-10, 2008-09
and 2007-08 have rated the Department as Excellent to Average.
Strict adherence to Academic Calendar and other related activities for BE programme
was maintained.
Post-graduate programme
The Department of Civil Engineering is administering specialization in five disciplines leading to
Master of Engineering (by course work) in the morning and evening programmes. A total of 111
students were admitted in these disciplines in the evening programme and 5 students were
enrolled in the morning programme. The students enrolled in the morning programme are
required to undertake mandatory research along with coursework.
Two faculty members are continuing their Ph.D. research in the area of Pile Foundation and
Water Resources Engineering. Thirteen faculty members (Four this year and Ninein the previous
years)proceeded abroad to UK, USA, Italy, Netherlands and Malaysia for Ph.D. studies.

Programme of the Department as Excellent to Good.

a) Academic

All classes in session 2010-11 ended on 1st November 2011, and examinations started on
16th November 2011. The result of final year batch 2007-2008 was announced on 30th
December 2011. The graduating students submitted 29 projects out of which quite few
were of high standard. The final year result pass percentage was 96% in Civil, whereas
184 out of 196 students, who passed, secured 1st division.
This year a special programme Open Day was held at university level before start of
admission process on 23rd October 2011 . The department took part enthusiastically in the
programme, distributed specially printed departmental profile and held presentation to
boost up awareness of Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering to young
applicants.
Classes of all batches in academic session 2011-12 started on 2nd January 2012. All
academic activities were held according to the schedule. Departmental Orientation
Programme in addition to University Orientation Programme was also held successfully.
Winter session was arranged from 6th December to 26th December 2011 for repeating
students.
b) Extra Curricular
Students have participated in all extra curricular activities (e.g. debates, science fair,
sports, etc) organized by Controller of Students Affairs.

Internship for Students
A total of 305 internships in Private and Public Sector were offered to Third Year students of
Civil Engineering Department. Approximately 203 Students availed this opportunity during the
summer and winter vacations 2011.
Research and Publications
a) Research in Progress
A Pak-US collaborative earthquake research support programme in Structural
Engineering started in 2007 has been completed. A research grant of US$ 460,000 was
sanctioned aiming at capacity building in Pakistan to seismically retrofit essential
structures.
EMME (Earthquake Model of the Middle East Region) is a collaborative research endeavour
linked to GEM (Global Earthquake Model). The Department of Civil Engineering is
currently participating in the risk module and socio-economic module of EMME. The
risk module consists of two Work Packages: Seismic Risk Assessment (WP4), and
Deterministic City Scenarios (WP5). A research grant of 90,000 Euros has been
sanctioned.
Two faculty members continued their research leading to Ph.D. degree with
specialisation in pile foundation and water resources engineering.
Master of Engineering (by Research) is currently being offered and recently one fulltime
research student has completed the research work in Structural Engineering.

c) Independent Research
In order to measure the tectonic movement of Eurasian and Indian plates, GPS receivers
are being installed at designated places. The study is being done in collaboration with
University of Colorado Boulder USA.
Research Grant of PKR 1 Million for Project titled Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP) for
Civil Infrastructure Applications in Pakistan was given by HEC for exploring the

possibilities of using FRP in strengthening and retrofitting of civil infrastructure. The
project involves combined analytical/experimental research work.

International Collaborations
Collaboration with US Universities in the area of Construction Project Management:
Third International Conference on Construction in Developing Countries (ICCIDC-III) is
scheduled to be to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from July 4-6, 2012 at the Millennium Hilton
Bangkok. ICCIDC-III is a collaborative endeavour among NED University of Engineering and
Technology, Pakistan, Florida International University, USA, East Carolina University, USA and
Auburn University, USA to bring together renowned and qualified professionals in academia,
research, government and industry concerned with projects and programs in construction from
all over the world.
To provide a brief background, ICCIDC-I was held in Karachi, Pakistan in August 2008 as a
joint endeavour between NED University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan and Florida
International University, USA. Over 50 participants from 8 different countries attended the

conference and 51 peer reviewed papers were published in the conference proceedings. ICCIDC-
II was held in Cairo, Egypt in August 2010 as a joint effort between NED University of
Engineering and Technology, Pakistan, Florida International University, USA and MSM
Construction Engineering Services, Egypt. Nearly 100 participants from 21 different countries
attended the conference and 114 peer reviewed papers were published in the conference
proceedings. ICCIDC-III is deemed to be a bigger success.
University of Minho
Prof. Joaquim Barros, University of Minho, Portugal, visited the Department of Civil
Engineering, from 15th April 2012 to 22nd April 2012 under Pakistan Program for Collaborative
Research funded by HEC for the promotion of Collaborative Research between the two
Universities.
Geo-Hazard International, USA.
Department of Civil Engineering, NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi won
a collaborative research grant of almost US$ 460,000 under Pak-US Earthquake Research
Support Programme, where Geo-Hazard International of California, USA were research partners.
The objective of the research was capacity building in Pakistan to seismically retrofit essential
structures in collaboration with experts for Earthquake Engineering Research Centre, University
of California, Berkley and John A. Blume Earthquake Centre, Stanford University, USA. Faculty
from various Engineering Universities of Pakistan, as well as practicing professionals were
trained in various aspects related to earthquake and its implication on the infrastructure, along

with development of curriculum of undergraduate and post graduate level. The project was
successfully completed recently.
Earthquake Model of the Middle East Region (EMME)
EMME is a JTI (Japan Tobacco International) sponsored international project aiming at the
assessment of seismic hazard, the associated risk in terms of structural damages, causalities and
economic losses and also at the evaluation of the effects of relevant mitigation measures in the
Middle East region. The Department of Civil Engineering is currently participating in the risk
module and socio-economic module of EMME. The risk module consists of two Work Packages:
Seismic Risk Assessment (WP4), and Deterministic City Scenarios (WP5). WP4 deals with the
evaluation of regional seismic risk, while WP5 deals with the rigorous computation of seismic
risk for selected cities. Work on WP4 has been completed recently, while the research on WP5 is
going on. WP6 deals with quantification of socio-economic effects of earthquakes over the
Middle East region.
Collaboration with Industry
The establishment of CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL RESEARCH GROUP (CMRG) at the
NED University of Engineering and Technology is a platform for creating a nexus for industrial
linkage. The activities of the CMRG are being supported by faculty members from five different
departments including Civil Engineering, Urban and Infrastructure Engineering, Earthquake
Engineering, Materials Engineering and Petroleum engineering. There are currently 9 members
in the Group including 5 professors. This promotes interdisciplinary research efforts and

provides a forum for Industry University linkage and technology transfer to construction
industry.
The CMRG has been awarded 4 Industry Fellowships for supporting the postgraduate students
conducting research. The sponsors include AMERLI STEEL, MATRIXX, LUCKY CEMENT
and Frontier Works Organization (FWO).
