DEAN‟s message

Publishing the Annual Report of IEEE is a great event and its role cannot be over-

estimated especially as this Annual Report is published in a college with such an intellec-

tual and academic potential as any other part of this country. I would like to appreciate this

continued initiative of IEEE-PNEC chapter.

I have real pleasure to observe that members of IEEE-PNEC have been working

together in various areas of PNEC curricular and co-curricular activities from all platforms

for many years and have been an important asset. Today, IEEE-PNEC is not just a college

society but is a FAMILY in which the management, staff, students, and alumni works in

unity to foster this FAMILY SPIRIT. The entire atmosphere of IEEE-PNEC is permeated

by this spirit, which promotes collaboration and cooperation leading to peaceful learning

and growth. Your ALMA MATER is indeed proud of you!

I hope that the Annual Report will further stimulate the growth and development of

PNEC students who will learn about this vibrant society and the skill development of its

members. It will also allow showing their achievements to the outside world. I wish the

Editorial Board and Publications Staff of the Annual Report every success in achieving the

highest standards in content and operations.

Branch Mentor‟s Message

IEEE-PNEC Student Branch has evolved to become the most active and vibrant stu-

dent society at Pakistan Navy Engineering College, representing undergraduate students of

nearly all disciplines. It is indeed a great privilege for me to have served as the faculty men-

tor of IEEE-PNEC and is a matter of gratification for me to present to you the annual report

of all our activities during the Year 2011.

To further and supplement both the mission and vision of the college, IEEE-PNEC

frequently organizes various academic events which include technical seminars and work-

shops, career counseling events, engineering design events and competitions, and project

exhibitions. The society has also been representing the college at various seminars, expos

and exhibitions organized by other universities of repute at national level. It is worthy to

mention that through this platform, PNEC students have won several academic and extra-

curricular competitions held at various national universities earning praise for PNEC.

The Executive Committee of 2011 has worked diligently and their performance has

remained very much commendable throughout. I am indeed thankful to the Student Chair

Ms. Rabia Khalid, Vice-Chair Mr. Bilal Zaki and many other Executive Committee Mem-

bers for working tirelessly to making it into a successful year with various activities happen-

ing throughout the year despite prevailing security situations. Compilation of this annual

report is a proof of that and as you would go through it, you would be able to comprehend

the amount of hard work put in by these individuals.

The Executive Committee of 2012 will have big shoes to fill as they step into their

positions and take responsibility to match the standards set by their predecessors. I would

like to assure them of my unabated support and wish them all the best for the year ahead.

Let´s embark on a new journey!

Branch Counselor‟s message

Whoa! It only seems like yesterday when the new EXCOM‟11 took charge of

the IEEE PNEC affairs and now it is time to bid them farewell. It gives me immense

pleasure to say with confidence that the current EXCOM‟11 worked professionally and

delivered the best they had to offer even though the prevailing unfavorable law and or-

der situation in the city through out the year did hamper their activities.

Here are the few notable achievements of the IEEE PNEC activities over the last

one year. In July 2011, Mr Hassaan Idrees was selected by IEEE to attend the IEEE R10

Student Congress (New Zealand) with his travel expenses partially supported by IEEE

and PNEC. The second notable achievement was the introduction of the weekly Sparkle

Talk Sessions for IEEE member students and Faculty. Notable speakers addressed stu-

dents on the various facets of technological advancements. About Ten sessions were

held during the Fall 2011 Semester. For the 3rd consecutive year, IEEE PNEC Career

Counseling and WiE TechFest competitions were held at PNEC in Nov/Dec 2011; As

before these were a major success. Notable industrial entrepreneurs and speakers deliv-

ered motivation talks to students on how to groom themselves for a successful career

and inter university technical quiz competitions were held with a big participation of

students from engineering universities of Karachi.

It seems like yesterday when we had our

handing/taking over ceremony and Syed Ahmed

Fuad, Chairman‟10 handed over the office to me.

Year 2011 has been a wonderful year for IEEE

PNEC Student Branch and for me. With a series

of accomplishments and achievements within such

a short span time, IEEE PNEC has been able to

make its position among the top Student Branches

of Pakistan. It has indeed been a marvelous ex-

perience with the initiation of many excellent

events where the weekly SPARKLE Program and

the Robotics workshops are worth mentioning.

Bidding farewells have always been sad moments, but not this time when I‟m saying

goodbye to my Student Branch. It‟s because of the satisfying thought that the up-coming ex-

ecutive committee‟12 and the team of volunteers are more energetic and vibrant than IEEE

PNEC Student Branch ever had. I wish the new executive committee all the very best for fu-

ture endeavors and a spectacular year full of opportunities ahead and I hope that they play

their role in raising the standards of IEEE PNEC Student Branch up to great heights.

Thankyou IEEE PNEC for bringing out the best in me!!

Last one year passed like a flash, but we undoubt-

edly achieved quite a lot this year Alhamdulil-

lah. The greatest achievement during this year,

apart from a number of successful events, was the

trust shown by the Administration and Students in

IEEE PNEC SB. We were able to achieve all our

major targets set forth, and becoming the first and

the only student society in PNEC to bring spon-

sors and the main stream media in College for

student organized events was another notable

achievement. I‟d like to pat and thank my ExCom

for pulling off such an amazing and sparkling

year, without their dedication, hard work and sup-

port this would not have been possible.

I would like to take this opportunity and thank everyone who was the part of this camping

in any capacity and I‟d specially thank our Commandant, VP, Dean Capt. Babur TI(M),

Exo, Dr. Attaullah, Dr. Sameer, Dr. Sajjad, Mr. Ahmed Fuad and Ms. Rabia for their sup-

port. My best wishes to Onib Nasir and his ExCom and I am confident that the new com-

mittee will take IEEE PNEC unparalleled horizons and will leave a far more established

and organized society behind.

It has been a great pleasure serving as Vice Chairman IEEE PNEC Student Branch.

It has been a tremendously exciting year serving as the Internal Vice Chair-

person at IEEE PNEC Student Branch during the year 2011. The Ex-Com of

2011 has worked extremely hard to make PNEC an exciting place for us all,

and should therefore be, a model for the ones to follow. Remarkably, this

year also saw the collaboration of various student societies in PNEC, thus

marking the beginning of an alliance to put great ideas into action. Finally, I

would like to wish the best of luck to the future Ex-Com, and express my

hope that they would keep the torch burning and try to continue working tire-

lessly and selflessly to instil life into an otherwise purely academic routine of

students at PNEC.

Being a part of IEEE-Ex-Com has itself been a glorious entitlement for me.

It has helped me tweak my personality and taught me how to strategize and

organize myself. Working as a member of a team and getting to know all

these friendly faces has been no less than a pleasure. A really fun-filled and

memorable time for me, and all the amiable people I met at IEEE-

PNEC!! Wishing the best of luck to the future IEEE Ex-Com.

Muhammad Naeem Altaf

General Secretary

Serving as the General Secretary at IEEE-PNEC Student Branch during the year

2011 was a great privilege. I can proudly say that IEEE PNEC is no longer just a

society; it feels like being a part of a family where everyone supports each other.

The 2011 EX-Com has worked tirelessly to provide the students with Educa-

tional as well as Recreational Events. Due to our efforts this year also proved to

be a step forward towards greater mutual co operation between different socie-

ties, which is beneficial for the Students and the College on the whole.

It has been a tremendous experience working for IEEE PNEC under the

guidance of our respected Dean Capt Babur TI(M), our faculty advisors Dr.

Sameer and Dr. Attaullah and Rabia Khalid and Bilal Zaki. I have managed

to grow individually as a person, able to tone my management skills and also

have managed to find hidden creativity inside me whilst using all my skills

to benefit my student branch. The journey through the past one year has been

of many highs and a few lows which has made me a more resilient and deter-

mined individual, ready to face new challenges everyday and yet not be un-

deterred by the difficulties faced in my cause. One important lesson that I

have learnt is to keep working on your goals despite all the odds and you

would attain success, which would be my advice to the new Ex-Com. I

would like to thank IEEE PNEC for bringing out the best in me.

As a special project officer, I have dedicated my services to IEEE PNEC. I

have organized several events in this college, arranged workshops for students,

participated in different events. My experience with IEEE was enormous; I

have learned a lot working in IEEE, it gives us a lot of benefits. An IEEE

member has an access to all IEEE journal articles and conference proceedings,

which is really helpful especially when you are working on a project. Also it

offers a wide selection of development software of Microsoft to IEEE Student

members.

The year 2011 was an eventful one for me on many counts - personally, academi-

cally and professionally. I had some truly wonderful learning experience with

IEEE that were both global and local. I worked as the bridge between PNEC and

the universities in Karachi and elsewhere, helping arrange the Career Counselling

Event, and developing connections with various companies for internships and

jobs of PNEC students. I also was involved with the Global Integrated Network of

IEEE as the representative from Pakistan and worked with the Student Branch

Networking, Industrial Relations and Collaboration Platform wings. Being the

Lead Ambassador for Pakistan, I channelled communication with IEEE in Banga-

lore, Delhi, Hyderabad Sections in India and Bangladesh.

I served as IEEE PNEC internet officer for the last tenure and my experience

has been nothing short of an absolute treat. Over the last year I have had the

honour of being a part of a very enthusiastic (and tenacious) team. We have

come a long way over the last year and amongst all the effort and hard work

put in to achieve that there were many lighter moments that will be remem-

bered fondly. As the Internet officer I was responsible for setting up and main-

taining a website and establish an online presence of the society. While I take

tremendous pride in the growth IEEE PNEC has made in this department I

wish the next ex-com all the best, and hope that they raise the bar further for

future ex-com to challenge.

Holding various educational contests and social functions, I have grown profes-

sionally in a dramatic way. Working with other officers, I have seen that some-

times the team gets along, while other times they do not see eye to eye, but set-

ting aside the differences, I and my colleagues have risen above and taken on the

challenges. Serving under the IEEE-PNEC student branch, I got what it takes to

grab the bull by the horns and make things happen, therefore each and everyone

was well informed about the activities of IEEE in our university, which is the job

of a Communication officer. IEEE has given me a platform to interact at an inter

-university level, meeting new people at various venues definitely broadens ones

mind and helps to grasp the upcoming new and creative ideas.

My experience in IEEE was my first experience in any society and I enjoyed it

a lot. I joined IEEE (PNEC Branch) in sem-III and became the member of EX-

ECUTIVE COMMITTEE as Membership Officer. In IEEE, where we attend

and arrange some events like IEEEP Student Seminar, Techfest, IEEE Sparkle

etc, I learnt some management skills and made my social life better. Overall

my experience was very good and I am very thankful to Bilal Zaki and Rabia

Khalid for helping me in my work and supporting me in everything.

As our tenure comes to an end, so do a lot of fun-filled memories with loads

of responsibility also reach a closure. I, Hammad Khalid, an active member of

IEEE since three years and The Corporate Liaison Officer for the previous

year, takes back with me tonnes of experience, professionalism and a deep

insight into the practical world while handing over our titles to the next in

line. Organizing events, raising charity for the flood-stricken, participating

into various events, visiting industries and being members in technical and

social forums have been some of the highlights of the very happening year I

have had through IEEE-PNEC. May Allah guide us and make us successful in

all our future endeavors and may IEEE-PNEC branch stay strong and keep

bringing laurels of success to this university.

I chose engineering as a personal choice to excel in the field. I‟ve been volun-

teering for IEEE PNEC since August 2010. I fulfilled my responsibility as the

Junior Officer for the Ex-Com 2010-2011. Moreover, I‟ve been elected as the

Vice Chair WIE IEEE PNEC for the year 2011-2012. Apart from the engineer-

ing related extra-curricular, I‟m currently working as a reporter for an online

magazine by the name of „Youth Correspondent‟.

Extracurricular partaking is although optional but needs to be taken side to side

with studies in order to inculcate self confidence, knowledge and enlightenment in

oneself. For the same, I‟ve been volunteering for IEEE ever since I joined PNEC

and have handled all sorts of work. As an editor, I was able to enhance my writing

skills and it was a great and fun experience to turn every event into text. This

helped me polish my creativity and imagination. Moreover, since I was not only

handling the editorial but volunteering in general, I also learnt teamwork and

management. These are the things you cannot rote learn from any book or abstract

from a lecture. It has aided me towards becoming a better and confident individ-

ual and hence I wish to continue working for IEEE PNEC with full dedication and

commitment.

form for bridging the gap between the academia and cor-

porate market.

The collaborating partner, IEEEP was formed in

1979 to endeavor the promotion of knowledge and for

communication between students, employees and pro-

fessional members. IEEEP encompasses the needs and

requirements of present day electrical and electronics

engineers, inculcating improvised standards of profi-

ciency and adroitness.

This seminar basically aimed to make that en-

deavor become a reality by providing the students an

opportunity to present their research papers based

on their final year projects and to get hands on ex-

perience in this fine art of print.

DISCOVER NUST BUSINESS PLAN The NUST Centre for Innovation and Entrepre-

neurship (CIE), in its ongoing quest to promote inno-

vation and entrepreneurship has launched a paradigm-

changing, student level Business Plan Competition

(BPC) titled “DISCOVER-Prosperity through Entre-

preneurship” aiming to define a path towards creating

a self-sustaining eco-system for higher education and

wealth generation within the national socio-economic

context.

Firstly there was an introductory session at

NUST-PNEC, highlighting the objectives and advan-

tages of DISCOVER to motivate more and more stu-

dents to participate. The goals included offering com-

mercialization to the technology developed at universi-

ties; research and development activities with market

needs, hands on training and creating awareness about

the importance of entrepreneurship among the stu-

dents, faculty and researchers.

This was followed by a two-day workshop held

on 23-24th April 2011 where students from universities

all over the country participated and presented their

projects and business plans. Mentors and industrialists

were present to guide them on their presentation skills,

how to be as convincing as possible and to mark out

any loopholes so they could work harder and get to a

level where the plan would actually require imple-

mentation. Innovative idea isn‟t the only thing that‟s

important so the students were also taught as to how

they could target market needs, translate the ideas

into products, prepare elevator pitches and executive

summaries in order to convince the market and in-

dustry in a much better way.

The event was a great success thanks to the excep-

tional efforts put in by PNEC-NUST. Starting from

the meticulous planning to arranging the computer

labs to be open on Sundays during the event, assign-

ing various responsibilities to the students and fac-

ulty, ensuring security and that all plans were imple-

mented diligently. Furthermore, it couldn‟t have

been possible without the support and guidance of

IEEE-PNEC student branch. As gratitude, the DIS-

COVER team commended the

planning and implementation of

IEEE and PNEC, to be of “A class”

and said that it was „above and be-

yond the call of duty‟.

Moreover, being the only program

of its kind, the BPC was and is sup-

ported by private businesses, public

sector organizations, universities

and media groups. It acted as a plat-

form through which students from

universities across the country com-

peted to transform their ideas into

practical business plans and strive to develop prod-

ucts as well as services in order to ultimately estab-

lish business enterprises.

THE IDEA BEHIND SPARKLE

IEEE PNEC Student Branch aims to progress

as a comprehensive society, responsive to techno-

logical change. We, at IEEE PNEC envisage explor-

ing, initiating and enlightening the knowledge of

theory & practice of all aspects of Engineering Sci-

ences.

As per our motto to make successful techni-

cal & professional engineers, we needed a platform

where students would be taught not for the purpose

of appearing in an

examination but to

mark a prominent

increase in their

knowledge. Hence

SPARKLE was in-

troduced to provide

wholesome interac-

tion between the

students & the in-

structors outside the

realm of mundane

syllabi.

SPARKLE

stands for System

Providing Access to

Research, Knowl-

edge, Learning &

Education. As the name suggests, it is a platform for

students to gather at one place and discuss ideas that

would lead to a progressive culture of research.

The idea of SPARKLE came from the fact

that since the topics that are necessary for an engi-

neer to excel in his field cannot be covered at a go,

IEEE PNEC as a society needs to cater to that. In

order to bring the innovative minds of the endowed

faculty, as well as the students of PNEC-NUST, a

weekly program of technology talk has been initi-

ated by IEEE PNEC. This talk is not the same as the

banal lectures that we attend as a part of course-

work. They are short and concise work. The topics

in the tech talk are varied ranging from controls to

communications, automation to technical systems,

Final Year Projects to Robotics & Exchange Pro-

gram Scholarships to sustaining one‟s work life.

IEEE REGION 10 STUDENT CONFERENCE

Engineering students vibrant in IEEE activi-

ties get chances to participate in international events

as well. One such excellent opportunity was this

year„s recently concluded IEEE Asia Pacific Region

Congress (R10SC 2011), held at the University of

Auckland, New Zealand, perfectly utilized by Has-

saan Idrees, the Outreach Officer IEEE PNEC.

Hassaan Idrees gave an exclusive insight to

his entire experience at the conference during the

IEEE PNEC SPARKLE session held on September

15, 2011 at PNEC. He not only described his experi-

ence at the conference but shared the site seeing of

the “city of sails” as well. The overall visit to Auck-

land, the students participating and the things he

learnt related to self-confidence, academics and ad-

vices regarding industry.

He told the attendees that the conference was

well-attended by more than 150 participants from

engineering universities, including students and fac-

ulty, as well as employed engineers, with sizeable

attendance from India, Japan, China, Australia,

Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka,

Bangladesh, Malaysia and of course, New Zealand

itself.

He encouraged all students to take up every oppor-

tunity that comes their way since indeed this world

is a beautiful place and is always providing new

and creative ideas for learning and life itself. Be-

cause we all know that experiential learning is

something one never forgets. It allows one to un-

derstand and absorb concepts effortlessly. Tradi-

tional style education is not the only thing that

works up one‟s mind. Getting up from chairs to

explore innovative and resourceful experiences

engages one to a more personal level and thus pro-

viding us with self-assurance and inspiration.

The session ended with a Thank You and encour-

agement speech by Lt. Cdr. Dr. AttaUllah Memon,

the branch mentor of IEEE-PNEC student branch.

FUNDAMENTALS OF GSM TECHNOLOGY

The second episode of SPARKLE with IEEE

PNEC was conducted by Dr. Sameer Qazi on Sep-

tember 22nd, 2011 where he enlightened the stu-

dents with the working fundamentals of the GSM

technology. He explained that the idea of cell phones

is to have long range communication but with the

reuse of frequencies in some other set. And that the

frequencies of different stations do not overlap or

interfere. Hence more number of subscribers can be

accommodated.

The working of the GSM occurs in such a

way that we don‟t have to transmit any high power

signals because always the nearest station is utilized

and these base stations are spread all over.

He explained the differences between the previously

used technology AMPS which is analog and GSM.

The problems that were encountered in the old sys-

tem have been countered by GSM, thus its popular-

ity.

He also signified the use of hexagonal net-

work of cells in the GSM technology and ex-

plained how only the hexagonal shape has the fea-

ture of being used here as it covers the largest area

out of the basic ones (circle, square etc) and as

there shouldn‟t be any gaps in between and only

hexagons can be

overlapped/

overplaced.

He also ex-

plained the require-

ments of the 2G,

2.5G, 3G and 4G

systems and the

bandwidth they re-

quire to operate. He

similarly explained

the CDMA, WiMax

and EDGE tech-

nologies.

The event

was only a small

introductory part of

the GSM technol-

ogy to provide a learning experience to the stu-

dents to let them have the knowledge of the tech-

nologies already employed. So that the young

emerging talents can know what‟s already there

and what needs to be created or modified for a bet-

ter and luxurious tomorrow.

RECENT ADVANCEMENTS IN OPTICAL

COMMUNICATION

The third episode of SPARKLE was con-

ducted by Dr Bilal Khawaja on „Recent Advance-

ments in Optical Communication.‟ He started his

lecture with the purpose of the communication sys-

tem and what does a communication system require.

The different channels of communication

were discussed which were used in the past. The

world has since moved to optical communication

and that was discussed in detail.

The optical communication systems

that are being used nowadays were

explained and how do they func-

tion. He also explained the impor-

tance of optical communication in

catering the demand for the ever

increasing bandwidth today.

Optical fiber communica-

tions were discussed. He also ex-

plained the undersea optical com-

munications link installed globally,

due to which we are easily able to

communicate all across the world.

He also elaborated on the impor-

tance of alternate routes for the un-

dersea optical communications.

He explained the importance of optical com-

munication in today‟s world as the need for band-

width is increasing exponentially due to new appli-

cations being made everyday which include internet

tv, VoIP, gaming, teleconferencing, emails and P2P

sharing.

He also told about the emerging markets

for optical communication as one might believe it

to be used for only internet. The new markets in-

clude radio signal transmission, control harness in

cars and airplanes, sensors, light detection and

ranging and signs and illuminations.

It was a very knowledgeable session for the

attendees. It was attended by the students and a

few members of the faculty including Dr. Pervez,

Akhter Dr. Attaullah Memon, Dr. Sameerm Qazi,

Mr. Mustaqeem etc.

DATA ENCRYPTION AND ITS PRACTICAL

IMPLEMENTATION The fourth episode of the

SPARKLE IEEE PNEC was con-

ducted by Dr Athar Mehboob gave a

detailed lecture on „DATA ENCRYP-

TION & CODING‟. The lecture was

divided and covered in two classes.

Process of disguising informa-

tion as „ciphertext‟, or data that will be

unintelligible to an unauthorized per-

son is encryption. Dr Athar discussed

the importance of data/information se-

curity especially nowadays when al-

most everything works via internet etc.

How to maintain PC security through

modern cryptography methods and

how they would work better than those used in the

past.

He explained the various techniques of cryp-

tography used in the past and how they have

changed now, like the single key cryptography is

more efficient than the public key. Major schemes

used these days include ECC, PSA, and AES etc.

The „steganography‟ allows users to hide messages

that are very large. This feature becomes handy

when an outsized amount of data has to be sent pri-

vately. Moreover, he made a comparison between

the „encryption‟ algorithms and the „encoding‟ algo-

rithms and how they both can be equally difficult.

As an example, he described the „Caesar cipher‟ and

the „transposition cipher‟ in detail to explicate the

significance of data encryption and decoding.

„transposition cipher‟ in detail to explicate the sig-

nificance of data encryption and decoding.

In the second part of the lecture, Dr Athar

discussed the practical implementation of Data En-

cryption and how it can be used for secure transfer

of data. He discussed largely a device that he had

built himself and had implemented in the Pakistan

Army system for the encrypting and decrypting

data for the transfer of data.

This device having being implemented by

Pakistan Army provided them with a secure chan-

nel which was much better than most of the armed

forces of the world. It employed using a key for

encrypting the data and then sending the data from

the source to the receiver. This data would only be

decrypted using the key which was a 16 byte code.

The session was attended by a large number

of students and faculty as well including Lt. Cdr.

Dr. AttaUllah Memon, Dr Sameer Qazi, Dr. Bilal

PROBLEMS FACED BY WOMEN IN THE FIELD The fifth episode of SPARKLE IEEE PNEC was a special one for Women In Engineering (WIE) as

it celebrated its 2nd birthday. To celebrate this special occasion, Miss Mehwish Anwar , who recently com-

pleted her MS from PNEC

and is a trainee engineer at

Pakistan International Air-

lines (PIA) was invited to

speak about the problems

faced by women working in

the field.

She talked about her

on-field experience as a lady

engineer. She also shed light

on the problems that women

have to face in the engineer-

ing field and how to over-

come them successfully.

She illuminated the female

engineers especially with

methods concerning them

and how to tackle them in a

professional manner.

She explained to the young and buzzing

female engineers of PNEC about how to be suc-

cessful while working in the field as many of the

companies are averse in providing jobs to female

engineers on field due to the myriad problems as-

sociated with it. She made the female engineers

realize that it is actually beneficial for their learn-

ing and professional growth to work on the field.

We hope that it would have proved beneficial for

them with the expert advice from somebody who

is working on field.

DO‟S AND DON'T‟S OF FINAL YEAR PROJECTS Final Year Project is one of the most

important and the toughest part of an under-

grad‟s rite of passage to becoming an engineer.

As if the journey isn‟t hard enough on its own,

most students lack proper guidelines and to get

a head start. Keeping this in mind IEEE PNEC

organized a SPARKLE session, held on 1st of

December 2011, in which the final year students

Ms. Sugra Mehdi and Mr. Mutsaied Shi-

razi talked about the do‟s and don‟ts of working

on a final year project.

Together they highlighted the prerequi-

sites of selecting a project and emphasized on

the importance of teamwork, the command one

must have over the project and the versatility to

improvise. They reiterated that the group must have

all the bases covered before they begin their project

while talking about the potential problems if a basic

framework is not laid beforehand.

They also mentioned that one

of the most important things

to complete the FYP is a good atti-

tude, since complaining will not get

anything done; hard work, persever-

ance and teamwork will. There are

bound to be obstacles but with the

right attitude there isn‟t much that

can‟t be done.

We would like to thank Ms

Sugra Mehdi and Mr. Mutsaied Shi-

razi for this interactive session.

HOW TO BE IRREPLACEABLE AT WORK SPARKLE IEEE PNEC presented the most

anticipated episode and its season‟s finale on

15th December 2011. On this occasion, the Dean EPE,

Capt. Syed M. Babur TI(M) gave a detailed & fun-

filled lecture on „How to be Irreplaceable at Work.‟

He gave 5 tips to make

one‟s life easy & happening at

work, may it be professional or at a

student level. He introduced to us

the concept of R.E.A.C.H – Re-

sults, Enthusiasm, Attitude, Co-

operation and Honesty.

He accented importance of

results at any work relationship.

Irrespective of the actual steps

taken and the long or short-term

plans made, it must give one the

desired results. No work is com-

mendable unless it produces a good

output.

A person cannot produce the

desired results or reach a deadline

successfully unless one

shows proper enthusiasm

in their work. Let it be a

professional at work, or a student preparing for final

exams, enthusiasm inculcates one‟s mind to reach the

goal and stops at nothing less. Lack of enthusiasm can

leave a person behind his/her peers.

One of the most basic requirements a working

person should have in order to be triumphant is the

right kind of attitude. Attitude determines a person‟s

ability to be professional and to take his work seri-

ously.

When working with other people from different

backgrounds one has to be cooperative and com-

promising. This marks a positive impression on

the colleagues and peers. Everybody likes to

work with a person who is co-operative and un-

derstanding. This affirms one‟s

position at an organization or a

team.

„Honesty is the Best

Policy‟-This applies every-

where-be it a multi-national

firm or a group of students

working on a project. There‟s

nothing better than being hon-

est and sincere, not with just

people around but also with

one‟s work. This is the most

important factor in determining

one‟s place because honesty

leads to success.

Capt. Syed M.

Babur TI(M) explained

these points vividly and exuberantly and empha-

sized that if followed whole-heartedly, they can

for sure be the key to make a person Irreplace-

able at Work. The session was attended by many

students and a lot of senior faculty members also

graced the occasion with their presence.

CAREER COUNSELING III

| PNEC | IEEE | NUST |

CAREER COUNSELING MEET III IEEE-PNEC organized the Career Counseling

Meet III on 17th November 2011 in NUST, to create

awareness among under graduate students what is ex-

pected of them when they go to industry and particu-

larly how to get there.HR managers from SSGC and

PPL were there to enlighten the students about what is

expected of them when they send C.V and appear for

job interviews. Microsoft mangers guided the students

on how to become part of the prestigious competitions

that Microsoft has initiated for students and Vision-I

completed the career counseling event with their train-

ing on CV writing and interviewing skills.

After the recitation of Quranic verses, Mr. Sha-

hbaz Islam, DGM HR & OD SSGC was the first one

on the speaker‟s list. And he didn‟t disappoint. Amid

all the jokes and laughs he cracked at the future engi-

neers, he addressed some really important issues re-

garding job placement and succeeding in one‟s profes-

sion. He played with the audience‟s minds all along.

Most people knew that opportunities pass by and they

miss out due to their negligence but how exactly, that

was demonstrated quite clearly when audience‟s lack

of attention and observation was highlighted by the

distinguished speaker on couple of occasion. Also Mr.

Shahbaz Islam pointed out that the secret to excellence

is passion for your work. All in all it was a very inter-

esting and interactive session and left the students with

very much to think about.

The next speaker to come on stage was the rep-

resentative from PPL, Mr. Bilal Ahmad Khan and he

basically answered questions about the hiring process

of PPL. From summer internees to getting a regular

job in PPL he answered all questions in detail and sat-

isfied the knowledge thirst of students. He also told

about the unpleasant experiences he has when inter-

viewing candidates for jobs. Many students felt joyous

and happy when he said that only academic excellence

is not required but small things such as personality,

dressing, extracurricular activities and oration skills of

candidates also matter a lot in securing jobs. He

wanted to go on and explain more about these issues

but as always time limit forced him to end the ses-

sion early. He did end up taking 10 min extra min-

utes though.

Microsoft representatives enlightened the

audience on their engineering and technology

competitions. They explained Imagine Cup which

is a competition held annually and there is partici-

pation from all across the world. It is a technology

competition where students provide solutions to a

problem innovatively. The other competition that

they introduced the students to was Biz Spark, an

entrepreneurship program where those competing

are taught how to start with their business. They

are taught the skills required to do so and the

problems they would encounter.

Vision-I was solely dedicated to teach under-

graduate students how to write their C.V and fair well

in interview. They taught the students on how to write

a C.V. that would leave an impression on the em-

ployer. One important tip that they gave was that each

student is a product and they need to market them-

selves effectively whenever appearing for a job inter-

view. Vision-I team also focused on the importance

of persistence and determination and how it is such

an important tool in order to become successful in

life.

All in all it was another successful event by

IEEE-PNEC branch and got applauded by admin and

students it deserved. These events are necessary to

teach the students that extra skill which we don‟t

learn in classes and also they are very beneficial

when you actually apply for jobs and see the competi-

SCAVENGER HUNT

| PNEC | IEEE | NUST |

SCAVENGER HUNT’11 IEEE PNEC held the super exciting and

mega adventurous Scavenger Hunt on 7th October

2011.

Being one of the most highly anticipated

events, students of PNEC look forward to the scav-

enger hunt all year along. This is when we officially

tramp in every street and corner of PNEC without

being interrogated about our presence. This is when

we can discover all those passages and rooms where

our entry is forbid-

den otherwise.

And this is when

we can follow any

trail within Jauhar

without having the

fear of being

busted down by

some official.

Needless to say,

setting up this

event required a

great deal of wills,

patience, wit,

strength, hard work, creativity, sportsmanship and

exceptional leadership qualities on behalf of the or-

ganizers. But the results were fruitful for all as the

event turned out to be a major success.

The rules and procedures were laid out to the

whole college beforehand. There were a total of

fourteen teams comprising of sixteen members each.

Every team had a unique color as their identifier

name. The hunt formally took off with the Bilal

Zaki, Vice Chair announcing the rules and the Cdr

Farooq, SONA setting off the buzzer. Each team had

to hunt down 6 clues with the last one leading to the

Scavenger Trophy. Each team‟s clues were hidden

in an envelope of the same color as of the team‟s

name.

As soon as the hunt started there was a

great deal of rush and scoot from all of the teams.

Everyone wanted to be the first ones to get hold of

their clue. Every team had an idea if the progress

of the other team. But with the passage of time,

teams started wearing down with fatigue of con-

stant scurry and thus, the fervor decreased with a

few even

spotted sitting

around taking

breaks.

Though some

were still go-

ing hard and

not giving-up.

There was

some foul

play observed

as well. But

the organizers

were sharp

enough to let

the teams get away with it. The three hour hunt

included a lot of sweat and hard work from the

participants and the organizers.

As the sand was about to run out of the

hourglass for the third time, the Yellow Team con-

quered the scavenger trophy! A great deal of cele-

bration and rejoicing was seen from the team as

well as their friends. It was a memorable day for

all of us. The event provided everyone with a

chance to let his or her hair down. We all enjoyed

to our fullest and had a hell lot of fun. Kudos to the

Yellow team and organizers!

ROBOTICS WORKSHOP

| PNEC | IEEE | NUST |

ROBOTICS WORKSHOP IEEE-PNEC organized a series

of Robotics workshops for PNEC stu-

dents conducted by Rameez Qasim

(Special Project Officer IEEE-PNEC)

and supervised by Dr.Attaullah Memon.

Workshop was free of cost and was

open to all. It was attended by quite a

few enthusiasts in spite of the final ex-

ams being just around the corner.

In the first workshop Mechanical

Assembly of robot was discussed and

tips were given about it. The workshop

focused on “line following” and “wall

detecting” theme. Mechanical assembly

should be according to specifications and rules of

the competition. Also, it should be chosen and fabri-

cated according to the circuit of robot, for example

motor drivers and battery have a direct relation with

the mechanical assembly of Robot.

In 2nd workshop the electronics details of Ro-

bot were taught. A line following robot has to detect

a line and move accordingly. It detects that line

through sensor circuits. Most robots use optical sen-

sors for this purpose. Optical sensors have different

types and prices and it is up to the maker to select it.

Only the theoretical aspects of sensors were

discussed and interested students were asked to buy

sensors and brought them in next workshop.

Next workshop was about the practical appli-

cation of optical sensors in robots. Optical sensors

are either photo diodes or photo transistors. Both

types have different applications and which were

demonstrated in workshop.

Optical sensors use a light source to detect or sense

the line. Most of the students made their first sen-

sor circuit and were extremely excited.

Motor driver circuits have to be built sepa-

rately for the robot to turn and move in the forward

and backward direction. There are many choices

available for motors and their circuit components

and students were taught the differences and appli-

cations of those types. In motors stepper motor,

servo motor and simple D.C motor were discussed.

Circuit which drives these motors is called H-

bridge circuit.

The practical application of D.C motor was

demonstrated, there are several ways to design a H-

bridge circuit for D.C motor. H-bridge can be made

by simple or darlington transistors. And if money

isn‟t a problem and simplicity is required H-bridge

IC‟s can be used. One such commonly used IC is

L293. Application if this IC was also demonstrated

in the workshop.

ROBOTICS WORKSHOP

AVR is a commonly used microcontroller

for robotics. A microcontroller is the brain of any

circuit. An introduction was given to the AVR fam-

ily of microcontroller and the basic circuit of the

microcontroller was discussed.

The micro controller used for

demonstration was AT MEGA 16, a

common micro controller used in

such robots. Micro controller has to

be programmed according to specific

needs and thus AT MEGA 16 was

discussed briefly, in addition to a few

sample programs of input/output,

ADC and PWM. In case of a line fol-

lowing robot micro controller takes

input from sensor circuits and gives

output to motor driver circuit and

hence motion of robots takes place.

The last workshop on micro

controllers was dedicated to problems

faced by students in programming. in-

put/output programing issues were ad-

dressed along with some programs related to LCDs.

LCDs can be made to display various outputs using

micro controller through programming and a dot

matrix 16x2 LCD was programmed in class.

PCB is an abbreviation for Printed Circuit

Board. Practical demonstrations usually are done on

a Bread Board so that the designs can be altered.

When circuit design is finalized, it is designed and

soldered on to a PCB which itself is quite a process.

PCB fabrication is a multi step process and is for a

specific circuit only. So circuit has to be designed on

some software before fabricating the PCB.

Various softwares are available to design

PCB. OrCAD and EagleCAD were discussed in

workshop and then Toner transfer method was

used to fabricate the designed PCB.

Overall it was first of its kind workshop in

PNEC and we are extremely obliged and grateful

to Rameez Qasim for sharing his knowledge and

precious time with amateurs interested in robot

building and promoting robotics in PNEC so more

students can participate in national and interna-

tional robotics competition such as NERC,

RoboSprint and ABU RoboCon.

FLOOD RELIEF CAMPAIGN

Ever since the earthquake disaster struck our

country we have seen how each and every Pakistani

can unite for a single cause to help their brethren.

When another catastrophe hit our nation, we at IEEE-

PNEC didn‟t want to be silent observers and com-

plain but unite our university for a cause and help out

the flood-stricken through every means possible. A

fund generation campaign was launched by our

members who were dealt in three phases.

1. Planting fund boxes at important locations of our

university like the café, photocopy shop, library, cu-

bicles etc so that people have access to us at every

nook and corner.

2. Forming small teams and going to individual stu-

dents in the campus and hostel to convince them to

donate for our cause (no pressure, just their free

will).

3. Visiting faculty members who had already paid

some part of their salaries but were charitable enough

to not let us return empty-handed.

With the funds we gathered in form of cash, food and

clothes we decided to distribute them through three

channels.

1. People in our circles we directly know and can

ensure that they are in dire need of our assistance.

2. Pakistan Navy Flood Relief camps set up at vari-

ous locations.

3. An NGO named Pakistan Ka Khuda-Hafiz. Where

students of our university are members and can make

sure that our funds are circulated to really deserving

people.

By the grace of Allah, we hope that our ef-

forts are not in vain and our little contribution plays

an important part in some lives at least.

NERC ROBOTICS SESSION

In its bid to improve robotics in PNEC,

IEEE PNEC played host to the team from NERC

of E&ME College. The team comprised of two

current students of E&ME College studying

Mechatronics. The team visited PNEC on Friday,

3rd February 2012.

The team explained the theme for the next

NERC. They informed the students of the basic

mistakes that we tend to make while making a ro-

bot. The team also told that a professor would be

conducting a workshop for the participants of

NERC to teach them about the basics of a con-

struction of a robot.

IEEE PNEC felt privileged to host the

WIND ENERGY SESSION A session by Mr. Waqar Qureshi, a PHD candidate University of Auckland, New Zealand on Wind

Energy as an alternate source was conducted on February 3, 2012.

Mr. Waqar Qureshi started off with Power Generation

with Wind Power Energy, his topic of research. He described

the process, feasibility and compared the output and pros and

cons of different generators such as induction and synchro-

nous. Also like how large scale wind integration methods can

be cheaper and more reliable and that the latest wind turbines

can produce up to 5 MW of power. Moreover, protection

measures and the concept of smart grid were also discussed.

Smart grid are the devices where they can communicate with

each other and inform of the energy requirements. He ex-

plained the differences between the different renewable en-

ergy sources available to us. He told that wind energy is

cheaper then solar energy when large scale installation is

done. The minimum wind speed required for the turbine is 8

m/s.

Mr Qureshi focused on an interactive session, ad-

dressed queries side by side and used graphs and figures to

explain the functionality and outputs of the various kinds of

wind farms. This not only made the students have a better

understanding of the idea but also kept them engaged in the discussion throughout. The session was at-

tended by students from all the

disciplines including Mechani-

cal, Industrial & Manufacturing,

2011, a one hour session conducted by representa-

tives of the Pakistan WIE Forum. The main purpose

of the event was to create a better understanding

among the female students of UET of the benefits of

IEEE and WIE membership.

The speaker for the event was Ms. Rabia

Khalid, Chairperson IEEE PNEC Student Branch

and Executive Member of the Pakistan WIE Forum.

. She started off her presentation with the introduc-

tion to IEEE and enlightened the attendees for how

IEEE can be of use for them at undergraduate level.

She highlighted the differences between Google an

IEEE and explained them how IEEE holds an upper

hand over Google citing 60,000 patents where as

Google having no consistent standards of technical

excellence displays random info to its users. She

also explained the networking of IEEE and how it

can prove to you as a platform to realize your

dreams and run towards your goals.

She emphasized that we should focus on rea-

sons why females in the field of engineering de-

crease on every step. They lack mentorship, job op-

portunities, career guidance, contacts and relations

and an easy approach to all of them is the network of

WIE. WIE offers you online resources for women in

computing, scholarships, internships, projects grants,

informative publications and much more.

She concluded the session by highlighting

some examples and facts that showed how the net-

work of WIE helps you add stars to your career and

personality.

can help us improve our networking, personal and so-

cial skills. The session was concluded by an activity in

which each student was asked to write down their

fears and failures on a piece of paper, then a paper

plane was made out if it and it was thrown away with

as much force as possible.

This was to make them realize that throwing

away your fears is really doable and makes you feel

better. Chairman Karachi Section, Engr. Parkash Lo-

hana presided the session and awarded certificates to

the speakers and organizers of the event.

by WIE-IEEE PNEC SB. During elections, 2010-2011, I applied for the

post of Vice Chairperson of WIE-IEEE PNEC and was elected as the

same after voting procedures. I served as the Vice Chairperson of WIE

and managed to organize successful events like All Girls Beach Trip,

Maximizing the message(in which WIE-IEEE PNEC Ex-Com went to

PN Model School and encouraged the girls to take up engineering as

their profession) and TechFest ‟11 ,along with the WIE Ex-Com. After

learning as a volunteer and Vice Chair, I opted for the post of WIE Chair-

person and got elected unopposed for the year 2011-2012. I hope I can

live up to everyone‟s and most importantly my own expectations in this

tenure.

I, Saima Ishaq, student of BE electrical at PNEC became the WIE

treasurer after an exciting as well as competitive election in January

2011. My time spent in PNEC verily would have been quite boring and

monotonous if absorbed by all those thick curriculum

books. However, these last two years may be described as a mixture of

excitement, practical experience and relations that we all would relish

throughout our lives. I am absolutely sure of not expanding my circle

of acquaintances without IEEE.Being part of WIE, we planned and car-

ried out many entertaining as well as knowledgeable events in 2011

like The Beach Trip for girls, Bake Sale fundraiser for the flood victims

of Pakistan, Minute to Win it, and techfest.I would therefore make clear

that my first year spent as a volunteer at IEEE was though quite enjoy-

able but being part of excom was a thorough exposure in itself. Saima Ishaq

I became a member of IEEE in my first semester. The reason for join-

ing in the league pronto was the image of this esteemed society which

was portrayed so well by our seniors. As soon as I and my fellow

newbies joined in, we experienced a flavor of professional world and

what does it require to be a part of it. Since then I‟ve been an active

member and now a part of the Executive Committee too. Its feels like

a beginning of a completely new and enjoyable learning trek.

BEACH TRIP

An all-female student‟s trip to NathiaGali

Beach was held on 1st April 2011, Friday. By tremen-

dous efforts made by WIE, the trip was successfully

planned and finalized. Around thirty-five female stu-

dent along with a few faculty members, left for

NathiaGali Beach at 1.30 pm.

The journey was carried out in a Hino pro-

vided by the college. Although the trip was long and

the weather sweltering, but the time was spent amia-

bly. We reached our destination by 2.45 pm. The sight

was beautiful and the scenery breath-taking. Almost

everyone quickly left to enjoy themselves at the wa-

ter. We had taken up with us plenty of food for every-

one. Including Chinese rice for lunch, soft drinks and

other snacks.

We all enjoyed to our fullest and had a lot of

fun. We left Nathia Gali by 6 pm and arrived back at

the hostel at 7.30 pm. The full day long party was a

remarkable effort by WIE AG PNEC so that our hard-

working individuals can get a well-deserved break

from hectic life of the university.

THE STUDENTS AT THE BEACH TRIP

BARBECUE PARTY

WIE – PNEC AG arranged an all-girls

BBQ night at the NUST Girls‟ Hostel on April

1st, 2011.

The BBQ was set up at the hostel lawn.

While the girls chatted away and enjoyed their-

self in the pleasant ambiance, the stakes sizzled.

The food was served after a while which was a

scrumptious combo of kebabs, tikka, parthas and

side dishes.

Everybody relished on the hearty

meal. After the dinner, there was a little variety

show organized by a few members of WIE

which comprised of a skit and some perform-

ances.

The audience thoroughly enjoyed the

show and appreciated the performances. It was a

memorable night for all of us.

BAKE SALE

WIE came in the view with a noble cause and

arranged a fund-raiser for the flood victims of Paki-

stan. For this purpose they set-up a “Bake Sale” dur-

ing the Fresher‟s Week.

The aim was to sale quality food items at a

rate little higher than the normal market rates so that

profit obtained could be sent to the donation.

The in-living girls were the stars and our

bake experts. They had put in every effort and the

best of their culinary skills in a limited time and

sources. And presented us all with scrumptious and

savory food. Once the sale started, it didn‟t take long

for the food to vanish.

By the end, our society had collected a good

deal of money from this sale and it was all donated

to the flood victims of Pakistan.

MINUTE TO WIN IT

As the Fresher‟s week commenced, we the

societies of PNEC put in enormous effort and pro-

vided the students with every possible captivating

and enlivening event which was imagined. IEEE-

WIE being one of the key organizers arranged a

replica of the much hyped of international TV

show called “Minute to Win It”. It was held on

4th of October 2011. The format was like that it

had on the spot participation and involved minute

games. Every round had a game designed from

the stuff we use in daily life. The contestant each

was given a task right there which they were sup-

posed to complete it in one minute.

The creditable phase of the event was that

the whole thing was set-up in a very jovial milieu.

The WIE team made sure that everyone enjoyed

to the fullest. The highlight of the event was when

the Dean EPE and the Commandant showed-up

and participated whole-heartedly. It gave an un-

speakable boost to the organizers.

ANNIVERSARY

2ND ANNIVERSARY OF WIE 27th of October was a very special and much-awaited day for WIE at PNEC as it marked the com-

pletion of two successful, eventful

and full of excitement years for us.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, we cele-

brated our second anniversary on

this esteemed day with all the love,

cordiality, fervor and the traditional

cake-cutting. WIE-EXCOM had ar-

ranged a SPARKLE session where a

female engineer from Pakistan Inter-

national Airlines came and shared

her experience and how it was like

for her at her workplace.

She talked about her on-field

experience as a lady engineer. She

also shed light on the problems that

women have to face in the engineer-

ing field and how to overcome them

successfully. She illuminated the fe-

male engineers especially with

methods concerning them and how

to tackle them in a professional

manner.

A little tea party was ar-

ranged afterwards so that everyone

could be a part of the anniversary

celebrations. The Vice Principal

and the Dean were our special

guests. The Executive committee

members cut the cake to the pros-

perity of their society.

TRIP TO SCHOOL

TRIP TO PN MODEL SCHOOL The Women in Engineering Affinity Group

at Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC) at

Karachi has been immensely active throughout the

year of 2011, but a need was felt to increase aware-

ness regarding the field of engineering among the

younger generations.

In this regard we de-

cided to arrange a trip

to PN Model School

Karsaz. Our aim was

to hold an interactive

session with the stu-

dents of matriculation

and above and brief

them about the vast

field of engineering,

our college and of

course, about WIE.

Our WIE Volunteers,

along with other girls

of PNEC, went to the

school on 25 Novem-

ber 2011.

We were ac-

corded a warm wel-

come by the administration and

faculty. Zenab Ali, the IEEE PNEC WIE Chairper-

son began the proceedings with a presentation about

the IEEE Women in Engineering Society, what this

society is based upon, what it focuses on, what

events it has organised till present, how women are

making a difference in Pakistan, and in the world

alongside men in the field of engineering, why is it

essential for bright women to choose engineering

and how those present at the session are living proof

that women in engineering is not a myth originated

during the ancient times. Zenab‟s presentation was

followed by a brief intro of the life of female stu-

dents at PNEC, NUST by an Electronics student,

Kinza Shafique. She told the attendees about the

life of young women engineering students at

PNEC, how their needs are catered to and how

they excel in both

studies and extra-

curricular activities at a prestigious college like

ours. Other senior students who went along with

the WIE team also took the podium and told the

attendees about PNEC and highlighted some of the

major aspects of the college.

We enquired the girls about their aims of pursuing

engineering as a career choice, both at the start and

end of the session, and we observed a significant

change in their response which had initially been

bent towards the medical

profession due to lack of awareness regarding women in engineering.

But that had to be blamed on

the old-school dogma our people

carry about engineering, generally.

We tried putting all of our efforts into

changing some of those young minds,

providing a fresh set of thoughts and

giving a new dimension to their ideas.

We sincerely hope that by the end of

the session we were able to increase

awareness and eliminate the stereo-

types regarding engineering amongst

the future generation of professionals.

By the end of the session, we

believe we were able to inculcate

awareness amongst them regarding the

endless possibilities for women in engi-

neering! We hope such events would

continue to be organized in the future for what we sow in the young minds at present, our country will reap

in the days to come!

TECHFEST

WIE PNEC held its second

TechFest on 20th December 2011.

This is the mega event which is being

held by our society now two years in

running. TechFest was planned and

organizedwith all of the zeal and zest

we could muster in it. The prepara-

tion for the TechFest had been going

on for about a month. Publicity was

being done on Facebook, official

page shared & being made the organ-

izer‟s display picture and TechFest

Posters being put up in universities

all over Karachi.

We compiled the event with a

fun filling Poster Design Competi-

tion, an interesting & informative

Quiz Competition & an enlightening speaker session.

The hype of it was brought up a notch when we an-

nounced that the winners of these competitions were

going to be awarded free high-tea vouchers at Mar-

riot Hotel.

Teams from various colleges and universities

participated with great enthusiasm. The event for-

mally commenced at 4pm with a welcome speech

from our Chair, Ms Zenab Ali. The attendees were

briefed about the proceedings of the whole event.

After this, the participants of the Poster Design Com-

petition went ahead to the college Tennis Court

where the Poster Designing was to be held. Each

team consisted of two members & was provided with

the paints, colors and pastels. The thoughts to be de-

picted on the poster were to be of SAVE ENERGY,

SAVE THE WORLD.

TECHFEST ‘12

Once the competition took off, the air was

filled with fun and laughter from the audience who

roamed about encouraging the participants. While

on the other hand, for the participants, it was a

nerve game, with only half an hour at hand.

There was an amalgam of art and faux-pas

on the posters that were being made. The artists

present there totally nailed it with their profes-

sional skills ad natural talent whereas those who

had joined in just for the fun sake kept the balance

in the competition byprovidingus with some com-

pletely wacky ideas of the theme. The results of

the competition were to be announced at the clos-

ing ceremony.

After the Poster Designing,

the participants were ushered to-

wards the halls where Quiz Compe-

tition was to be held. Two sessions

of quiz were to run in parallel. Each

team comprised of three members.

It had 3 rounds, the 1st being the

knock-out round. The quiz was

software based and each team had

to select its subject from a list of 5.

It was sort of like a rapid fire round,

giving answers to as many ques-

tions as they can in a short time of 2

min. The next round was to be held

in the auditorium. It was a pure test

of all that you‟ve attained at your

pre-university and university level

classes. The results again, were to be announced at

the closing ceremony.

After the qualifying round of the quiz, partici-

pants and audience proceeded to the auditorium

where the winners of the qualifying round battled for

the hi-tea at Marriott. This was followed by the

speaker session by Ms Hamna Lodhi, a former gradu-

ate of PNEC, who were to enlighten the audience

about branding themselves. The session was quite

informative with the right amount of humor.

The Commandant, Rear Admiral Syed Imdad

Imam Jaffri graced the occasion with his presence. In

his closing speech, he appreciated the efforts of WIE

IEEE PNEC and encouraged the students to regularly

take part in such mind freshening activities. Results

were announced after much wait and anticipation.

The team from Bahria College NORE 1 won the

Poster Design Competition, while the students of

1st semester, Industrial & Manufacturing Engineer-

ing from PNEC NUST won the Quiztronic. The

event was concluded with refreshments for all

where the guests discussed their take on our event

and we, the organizers took a breath of relief and

congratulated ourselves upon being done with an-

other successful event. We thanked all for being

present and making our efforts worth it.
