Jugend Eine Welt Austria

The non-profit, legally independent andautonomous organisation Jugend Eine Welt– Don Bosco Aktion Austria was founded atthe inaugural meeting on 28 June 1997.Following a reorganisation in January 2007 ithas been called Jugend Eine Welt – Don BoscoAktion Österreich. It is registered as a non-profit organisation in the NPO register underthe number 843744258. Jugend Eine Weltmanages Don Boscos Service GmbH in col-laboration with the NPO Jugend Eine WeltInternational (register number 315320774).

Jugend Eine Welt pursues the objectives of promoting aid to youth both nationally and internationally and sustainable development cooperation.

Jugend Eine Welt was one of the first Austrian organisations to be awarded the stamp of quality for charities, receiving it on 14 Novem-ber 2001. Ever since it has been entitled to carry the stamp without interruption.2009 the Don Bosco Finance LCC was founded.

Highlights 2011

Manstein publishing house for especially innova-tive, creative and outstanding PR achievements. Jugend Eine Welt won its award for “Street Children’s Day 2011”. The award recognises the unflagging efforts and original approach with which the topic of street children has been established in the public consciousness and with which Jugend Eine Welt has supplied new ideas for the education system. We’d like to thank all the school classes, youth groups, Catholic children’s groups, parishes, volunteers and dedicated unpaid workers who helped make “Street Children’s Day 2011” such a great success.----------------------------------------------------

South Sudan: A Tough Start to Independence----------------------------------------------------About six months after an overwhelming majority of South Sudanese voted for a split from the North, South Sudan declared its independence on 9 July 2011. “98 per cent voted for the new state,” says Fr. Jim Comino SDB, and goes on to explain, “They hoped it would bring peace.” But so far this wish has not been fulfilled. Battles keep breaking out, hindering the reconstruction of the country.----------------------------------------------------

Sailing for Peace!----------------------------------------------------The peace fleet was founded in 1992 as a sign of opposition to the war in former Yugoslavia. Young people from a wide variety of different countries spend time with each other on a sailing boat, learning to work as a team and reaching a destination together. In the years since its foundation, the peace fleet has broadened its scope and today encompasses a great many target groups and social issues. In 2011, Jugend Eine Welt gave six schoolgirls from Bratislava the chance to take part in the peace fleet. They had no trouble communica-ting with the Austrian children, because they are learning German and English at school. New friendships were forged before the bus had even reached Croatia after leaving Vienna.---------------------------------------------------

An Award for the Project for Street Children in Ecuador!----------------------------------------------------On 7 September 2011, “Chicos de la Calle”, the Don Bosco project for street children in Guayaquil, was awarded the Juscelino Kubit-schen prize. This prize is awarded every year by the Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo, the Inter-American Development Bank, and recognises the significant contribution that this project is making to society. “Chicos de la Calle” supports street children and disadvan-taged children and young people with a range of activities that include education and leisure activities. In addition, the children receive medical and psychological care in the project’s centres, and are given food and, if necessary, a roof over their heads. Jugend Eine Welt has supported “Chicos de la Calle” ever since the association was first founded. The project is being carried out not only in Guayaquil, but also in Quito, Esmeraldas, Santo Domingo and San Lorenzo.----------------------------------------------------

100th Volunteer from Upper Austria ----------------------------------------------------On 25 March 2011, Jugend Eine Welt celebrated the return to Upper Austria of the province’s 100th volunteer. The celebration also paid tribute to the accomplishments and commitment of every one of the young women and men who work as volunteers on Don Bosco projects for disadvantaged children and young people all over the world. Since Jugend Eine Welt introduced its voluntary work programme, 400 young people from Austria have shown their solidarity with the people of Africa, Asia and Latin America and, through their work and their support for a fairer world.----------------------------------------------------

On 31 January 2011, the commemoration day of Don Bosco, Jugend Eine Welt invited par-ishes, school classes, youth and Church groups to turn their attention to the plight of street children and carry out activities to raise money for Don Bosco aid projects for the third time. Reinhard Heiserer, Director of Jugend Eine Welt, says, “The number of children living on the street worldwide and fighting for survival there every day is estimated at between 33 million and 100 million.” He goes on, “In the many Don Bosco centres for street children all over the world they are given aid, can go to school and find somewhere to live.”

Solidarity Campaigns all over Austria for Street ChildrenStreet Children’s Day 2011 focused on children in Haiti, many of whom lost their families in the devastating earthquake of 2010 and now face a daily struggle for survival. A large number of children in Austria showed their solidarity with these children. They organised charity concerts, sold snacks and cakes at school and staged activities in pedestrian precincts and shopping centres to draw attention to the fate of street children.

Street Children’s Day 2011 received prominent support from Vienna’s auxiliary bishop Franz Scharl. Together with Reinhard Heiserer he cleaned the shoes of passers-by in front of Vienna University. This is a job done by mil-lions of children all over the world to earn a little money for something to eat or to support their families.

Reinhard Heiserer is delighted by the amount of support shown for Don Bosco aid projects: “Many unusual activities were organised this year, too. It’s nice to see young people in Austria showing concern for the fate of street children and actively doing something to help them. I’d like to thank them all for their tremendous enthusiasm and efforts.”

Reveal a world: that was the main motto of the numerous Jugend Eine Welt volunteers who went out again this year to schools, youth groups and parishes to talk about their work.

In 2011, former volunteers gave the Austrian public an insight into their experiences of the world in more than 100 talks, workshops, presentations and activities.

Targets reached

With a total of EUR 5.6 million received as donations and grants, Jugend Eine Welt was able to meet its financial targets. While it is true that total revenue fell by 9% compared to 2010, which was an exceptional year, this is due to the de-crease in public funds received as emergency aid for the Haiti disaster. Revenue from general donations rose by 3% compared to the previous year. Donations for developing countries in Africa and Asia were able to compensate to some extent for the decrease in the sums for Haiti.

It was your support that made this result possible. We would therefore like to thank you most sincerely for that!

Development of Revenue and Expenditure

The majority of our expenditure directly supports aid projects all over the world, especially in India, Pakistan and the Solomon Islands. We allocated 86 per cent of our funds to such projects: that is five per cent more than in 2010.

Despite the necessary investments in profes-sional communications tools, innovative com-puter programs and the training of our volunteers and employees in 2011 we succeeded in keeping our administrative expenses at virtually the same level thanks to maximum cost-effectiveness, financial prudence and efficiency. These costs have risen by only 0.28 per cent to 3.53 per cent.
