Ken and Jane White have spent their adult lives cultivating the community in which they live—he, with a dedication to businesses, non-profit organizations and government, and she, to the gardens, inner city neighborhoods and historic sites of lynchburg and beyond. together, they have nurtured a commitment to Centra, “a precious community asset that provides a quality of care, medical staff and facilities second to none.” “My involvement with Centra over the years is a vital part of the reason that we support the Centra Foundation,” said Ken White, who served on the board of lynchburg General Hospital during the 1970s and was general counsel to both lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist during the merger of the two hospitals in the 1980s. In the year 2000, he joined the

board of the Centra Foundation, and two years later began serving on the Centra Board of Directors. He is currently chairman of the Centra board and continues to serve on the board of the Centra Foundation. “What Centra does for people who live in this region is beyond description,” said White. The Whites have first-hand knowledge of the quality of care at Centra. Their three children were born at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital, Jane White has undergone heart surgery, and, in addition to minor surgeries, Ken White recently underwent knee replacement surgery. “The Centra staff does a wonderful job. They are a very impressive group,” said Jane White. “We also have

family and friends who have lived at the Summit assisted living and Guggenheimer Health & rehabilitation Center. They received wonderful care, and the facilities are beautiful.”

Foundation support The Whites are generous supporters of the Centra Foundation, contributing annually and supporting recent capital campaigns toward the rosemary & George Dawson Inn, the Centra alan B. pearson regional Cancer Center and the east tower at Centra lynchburg General Hospital. In his role as Centra board chairman and Foundation board member, Ken White sees real challenges ahead, with healthcare organizations having to determine how to manage rising costs at a time when state and federal assistance for low-income patients is being reduced. “The Foundation has become more important now and for the future than ever before,” he said. “providing medical screening, community education, indigent care, assistance to needy students to pursue nursing careers, fundraising efforts for capital improve-ment campaigns—every component of the Foundation’s mission is critical to meeting the healthcare needs in central Virginia.

“Many of Centra’s recent projects would not have come to fruition if not for the generous contributions from members of our community. “The Community Initiative Fund is another important component of the Foundation,” he said. “The fund supports community health-related projects and programs, and you quite often see innovative approaches to dealing with health issues.”

Lives of nurturing The Whites, both natives of lynch-burg, began dating after they met in trigonometry class at e.C. Glass High School. They will be married 50 years in June and have spent their lives nurturing the community in which they live. after college, Jane White worked as a research technician in allergy research at the university of Virginia Hospital, followed by work with the Institute of Chartered Financial analysts. The couple has three children. Their daughter, Gena o’Keefe, M.D., director of Healthy Communities Initiatives and senior associate with The annie e. Casey Foundation, and hus-band, Bill, live with their two children in Maryland; son, Spence, former new York actor and now director of theater at Jefferson Forest High School, and wife, niki, live in lynchburg; and son Charlie, senior portfolio manager and principal of Wood & White and chairman of the lynchburg School Board, and wife Kennon, live with their two children in lynchburg. “When the children began to grow up, I became a landscape gardener and had quite an independent business,” Jane White said. “I took a few courses to do drafting. I do the rest because I love it. I have a subspecialty, which is historical garden restoration.”

That’s putting it modestly. Well known for her work restoring the historic old City Cemetery, she retired after 27 years “of 16-hour days as volunteer executive director.” a devoted gardener and member of the Hillside Garden Club (a member club of the Garden Club of Virginia), she has written three books: “The Book of attributes for the living Horticultural Collections of the old City Cemetery Museums and arboretum,” a documen-tation of plantings at the old City

Cemetery; “once upon a time…a Cemetery Story,” the story of her journey and those of friends and neighbors to restore the old City Cemetery; and her most recent, “lessons learned From a poet’s Garden,” about the restoration of the historic garden of Harlem renais-sance poet anne Spencer. She also has made many contribu-tions to surrounding inner city neigh-borhoods and was recently honored by the lynchburg neighborhood Devel-opment Foundation with its partner-ship award for her efforts toward the organization’s community revitaliza-tion mission. She has written grants for funding from the Centra Foundation, the most recent of which was for kitchen renovations to a neighborhood center in a low-income section of lynchburg. She has been awarded the Massie Medal, the highest award given by the

Garden Club of Virginia, and the Brown-son award, the highest award given by the Virginia association of Museums. Ken White retired in 2000 from edmunds & Williams, pC, after 35 years of practicing law. He then became the founding chairman of the board of the Bank of the James, from which he retired in 2010. In addition to his service to Centra and the Centra Foundation, he has served on a number of committees for the american Bar association, the Virginia Bar association, the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia law Foundation and the lynchburg Bar association. His service to the state has included appointed positions during the terms of nine governors of Virginia. He has served as president and vice president of the State Board of education, chairman of the Virginia public School authority and as a member of the Governor’s Commission on excellence in education. He recently completed eight years of service on the Commonwealth transportation Board. White is a former president of the Greater lynchburg Community trust and a former member of the boards of C.B. Fleet Company and region 2000. He also is a former member of the boards of lynchburg Coca-Cola Bottling Company and Sweet Briar College. looking ahead, White says the future will depend on how successfully healthcare organizations manage unknowns resulting from current healthcare legislation, such as fulfilling the need for primary care physicians in light of the millions more patients who will be covered by insurance. “We are actively looking into our future role as to how we will continue to provide the best medical care to our community,” he said.

H Harmon and Mary Beauchamp are so impressed with the medical care they have received from Centra that not only have they elected to retire in lynchburg—far away from their children—they give generously to the Centra Foundation as a means to support community health needs. The couple had spent four decades moving between Florida, Georgia, Wisconsin, texas and Virginia as Harmon Beauchamp took on ever-increasing levels of responsibility in the paper industry, manufacturing linerboard and corrugating medium. Changes in plant ownership and new positions took the couple to texas twice and Virginia three times. In 1994, he retired as general manager of the Big Island mill owned by Georgia pacific. “We decided that Virginia was a good place to live,” he said. “Mary told me it was the only place we had ever lived with four seasons.”

two years after retiring, Harmon Beauchamp suffered a heart attack. rushed to Centra lynchburg General Hospital by the Boonsboro Fire Department, Centra cardiologists implant-ed two stents to open his arteries. “Dr. Thomas nygaard was very instrumental in my well-being,” he said. “It was then that I became convinced of

the superior medical community here and one of the principal reasons we chose to stay here rather than go ‘home’ to Florida or to live near our children and grandchildren.” Their daughter, laura, once worked in the oil industry in louisiana, texas and California, but is now a mother of three and a community volunteer in San luis obispo, California. Their son, allen, works in the paper industry in texas. “When we retired, we did a lot of traveling,” he said. “We’ve taken 15 cruises and land trips to australia, europe, africa, north and South america. But now that we are both 82, we don’t drive to texas or Florida anymore, so our children and grand-children have to come see us. We wish they could visit more, but for somereason, it seems they have to work for a living or attend classes.” The couple’s experience with

Centra has not been limited to Harmon’s heart attack. each of them has had a hip replacement. “My wife has a new right hip, and I have a left hip. We are a matched pair,” said Beauchamp, laughing. He has also undergone shoul-der and back surgery, both of which were successful. Mary Beauchamp has been battling cancer for seven years, “and although we are not happy about having to seek cancer treatment, the Centra alan B. pearson regional Can-cer Center has provided excellent care. “We are comfortable living in lynchburg, and we admire the medical community here. This is the place to be for the problems we’ve had,” he said. Beauchamp said it was shortly after his heart attack when he recog-nized that the Centra Foundation was a good avenue for channeling donations

into the community. The Beauchamps contribute regularly to the Foundation and recently supported its capital cam-paign to build the rosemary & George Dawson Inn. Centra began construction at the end of august for the Inn, which will meet the critical need for overnight lodging close to Centra hospitals and medical centers for patients and their loved ones. The 24-room Centra Inn is being built on tate Springs road

in front of the Centra alan B. pearson regional Cancer Center. The Beauchamps always have been philanthropically minded. In addition to making “small donations to many worthy charities,” they are long-time supporters of her alma mater, Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, and his, the university of alabama. The couple also has set up a trust fund with the Greater lynchburg Community trust to support the rescue squad, fire depart-ment and library in Big Island as well as the Boonsboro Fire Department. Three work assignments totaling 20 years created an affection and a desire to support the community of Big Island. “We had a little bit to do with starting the library in Big Island,” Beauchamp said, “and we included the Boonsboro Fire Department to the trust because its rescue brought me to the hospital and Dr. nygaard when I had my heart attack.” The Beauchamps also are generous with their time and expertise. The couple belongs to peakland united Methodist Church. Mary Beauchamp has served on the board of the Interfaith outreach association and churches for urban Ministries in lynchburg. She said her favorite volunteer work was in the kitchen at The Daily Bread in lynchburg. Harmon Beauchamp has served as president of the chambers of commerce in orange, texas, and lynchburg. He also served as chairman of Central Virginia Industries in lynchburg, served on the board of oakwood Country Club and has held positions on several other charitable boards, including the Miller Home in lynchburg. In 2000, he was named a distinguished departmental fellow for the department of industrial engineering at the university of alabama.

F Floyd W. “Sonny” Merryman, Jr. took his mother’s advice to heart. “She always told me that as you go through life, whatever you give to help others, you will receive back three-fold, and she was right,” said the founder and patriarch of the company that bears his name, Sonny Merryman, Inc. “a woman came into my office not too long ago and introduced herself,” he said. “She said she wanted to thank me for what I did for the Centra alan B. pearson regional Cancer Center. Her husband had received treatment there. She told me she saw my name on the Center’s list of benefactors, noticed our company’s sign on the road and decided to come in to thank me. Then she went on her way.” “Sometimes I don’t realize how much of a difference my personal or our company’s donations make in people’s lives,” he said. Sonny Merryman, Inc., has made sizeable contributions to the Centra Foundation’s capital campaigns,

and he personally contributes to the Foundation to further the education of Centra nurses. “I didn’t know how much my donations helped nurses until I received a letter from a woman who wrote that the gift helped her

pay off nursing school,” he said. “I have so much fun helping people who need it.” Merryman is known throughout Virginia as a keen businessman, success-ful entrepreneur and champion of public education and youth development. His many professional achievements include induction into the Virginia association of pupil transportation Hall of Fame in 2002 for his contributions to school bus and student safety. an alumnus of Virginia tech, he has provided significant financial support for numerous univer-sity academic and athletic programs and projects, including scholarship assistance to hundreds of Virginians. In 2006, he was awarded Virginia tech’s highest individual honor, the William F. ruffner Medal, in recognition of his service and leadership to the university. In addition to Centra Foundation and Virginia tech, he supports many youth service organizations, including the YMCa, Boys & Girls Clubs, little league, Junior achievement, Boy Scouts

of america and the 4-H Club. “I tell youngsters that if you ever get in a position where you can help someone, then do that,” he said. “You’ll get so much pleasure in return.” His philanthropy extends to many other organizations as well, including the Salvation army, the local fire department and emergency service providers, presbyterian Homes & Family Services and rustburg united Methodist Church. Born in 1924 in rustburg, the eldest child of Floyd and Margaret Muldowney Merryman, his nickname Sonny origi-nated from his favorite aunt aileen—not because he was the oldest son or even because he was a junior, but because he possessed and displayed a bright and sunny disposition.

His character and “principals of hard work, fairness, ethical conduct and ingenuity” led him to build the company popularly known as the “school bus folks.” He and his wife, lou, began the business in 1967, when Thomas Built Buses of High point, north Carolina, was seeking a new Virginia dealer and selected the man who had a reputation as a relentless, but respected and knowledgeable bus sales professional.

“It was tough in the early days,” he said, crediting his wife of 58 years with much of the company’s success. “My wife has been my trusted confidant and business partner. We are great friends, and she helped me keep up with a lot of things that I needed to know.” The couple and now their children alice patricia (pat) and Floyd W., III and grandson lee have grown the business into one of the largest and most successful bus dealerships in america. There are 110 employees at the company’s three loca-tions in evington, prince William and Chesapeake, Virginia. In addition to school buses, Sonny Merryman, Inc., sells transit and shuttle buses to statewide localities and agencies, churches, hospitals, childcare facilities, colleges, retirement communities and resort properties. The company sells trailers and containers and is the area’s headquarters for mobility equipment in school and commercial buses to assist the physically challenged with specialized transportation needs. Sonny Merryman, Inc., also exports buses traded in by school districts to countries worldwide, including Iceland, africa, europe, South america, Mexico and Central america. “The buses may be 10 to 12 years old, but there are a lot of people who can use them,” he said. Merryman credits his loyal employees for the company’s continuing growth and success. Sonny Merryman, Inc. is an employee Stock owned program (eSop) company, and in time will be owned solely by employees—one more example of how Merryman helps those who have helped him. His support for the Centra Foundation stems from a great respect for what he calls Centra’s “high-class medical care.” twenty years ago, he fought a successful battle against colon cancer. In 2008, he had a defibrillator and pacemaker implanted after collapsing from cardiac arrhythmia on two successive days in Florida. today, he praises the “excellent care” he receives from C. Michael Valentine, M.D., cardiologist with The Cardiovascular Group of the Centra Stroobants Heart Center. Mr. and Mrs. Merryman exercise three times a week at Centra’s Healthy living Center at the Jamerson Family YMCa and are impressed by the attention they receive from the staff. “I highly recommend the cardiac rehabilitation program. The staff watches you very closely while you are exercising and checks your heartbeat and blood pressure regularly,” he said. “The gals are first class. They run a good ship.” “Centra is doing a great job,” he said. “They help a lot of people.”

.A.A.m. LunChEOnM“Sharing Gifts“ – Raising Awareness

and Funds for Mammograms

More than 400 people attended the ninth annual Mammograms annually a Must (M.a.a.M.) luncheon on october 14, 2011. This annual event raised more than $17,000 support free mammograms for women in our community who cannot afford them and helped to to raise awareness of the importance of annual mammograms. The event was co-chaired by nancy Young, ed.D., and Yvonne McMahon.

M.a.a.M.’s mission is to raise awareness of the importance of annual mammograms for women 40 and over and earlier for those with a family history of breast cancer. Monies raised also help fund free mammograms for women in our community. M.a.a.M. is a volunteer group affiliated with the Centra Foundation. Many luncheon attendees and M.a.a.M. committee members have been touched by breast cancer and want to make a difference in the health of our region. In 2011 M.a.a.M. has sponsored 191 free mammograms and many additional diagnostic follow-ups.

at the luncheon, Kathleen Kennedy, MSn, Fnp, and ellen Deluca, ph.D., local breast cancer survivors, presented insights from a book they co-authored entitled, “Gifts of Wisdom.”

Kathleen and ellen shared “gifts” that family and caregivers give to patients—physical gifts such as slippers, and personal care items; support gifts—such as dinners and childcare; and emotional gifts—such as thinking-of-you cards and encouraging phone calls. The authors pointed out how patients also shared gifts of courage, determination and strength. Some patients channeled their adversity into helping others by enrolling in nursing school and volunteer programs to assist others. Special thanks to our luncheon sponsors robert W. IghT OF hOpENBenefiting the Cancer Patient

Support Fund

In May, a night of Hope, with a garden party theme, brought together more than 300 people at the Centra alan B. pearson regional Cancer Center. The attendees enjoyed the garden, live music, art and delicious food. The event raised funds for the Cancer patient Support Fund and the rosemary & George Dawson Inn.

The Cancer patient Support Fund allows physicians and staff to provide immediate financial assistance for cancer patients who cannot afford to pay for support services and therapies. The 24-room inn will provide the nearby comfort and convenience of a room for patients and families.

Jamerson YMCA

every February, the Centra Foundation partners with the Jamerson Family YMCa to sponsor a community health fair. The event includes free cholesterol, blood pressure, bone density and pSa screenings. It also includes health information booths with representatives from a wide variety of services such as cardiovascular care, mental health, cancer care, orthopeadic care, nutritional services, rehabilitation and senior services. The mobile mammography van is also at the event for digital screening mammograms. The Centra Foundation supports several health fairs each year that are open to the public and provide healthcare information and screenings in a community setting. The 4th annual employee, Volunteer and physician annual Fund Campaign was a great success! In 2011, employees and volunteers raised more than $290,000 to support the foundation’s mission. Many employees also donated earned time to support the campaign and our community’s health. The 1,000 donor goal was exceeded! 1,508 employees, volunteers and physicians donated to the 2011 campaign.

ten percent of employee annual Fund gifts support Centra’s HelpingHandsFund. This year, more than $25,000 will be placed in the Fund to assist employees in times of acute, unexpected need.

Rosemary & George Dawson Inn

Centra began construction at the end of august 2011 with a groundbreaking ceremony for the new rosemary & George Dawson Inn. The inn will meet the critical need for overnight lodging close to Centra hospitals and medical centers for patients and their loved ones. It will provide the nearby comfort and convenience of a room for patients who may need to be near Centra hospitals or our cancer center for early morning procedures or for evaluations, multiple tests or therapies. The inn will also offer the promise of a close-by nap, a night’s sleep or a shower for family members. The 24-room inn, is being built on tate Springs road in front of the Centra alan B. pearson regional Cancer Center. It will provide five times the number of current hospitality rooms, greater conveniences for patients and families and allow families to rest in a comfortable room away from the critical care environment of the hospital or cancer center. Centra serves a wide region that stretched north and west of lynchburg to the Blue ridge parkway and south and east of the city to prince edward county and communities along the north Carolina border. This growing population is increasingly drawn to Centra as a result of our outstanding clinical services and reputation for personalized care. as Centra’s geographic area expands and its reputation for nationally recognized services grows, the number of patients traveling to lynchburg from well beyond our region will continue to increase. The rooms in the inn will be available for patients and their loved ones who are from the local area or travel from an outlying area. With community support, Centra can ensure the best in personalized patient care and family support remains a hallmark of the Centra experience. The inn is a result of a Centra Foundation capital campaign, which raised over $2.1 million.

Centra Pediatric Center Opens

pediatric services have been relocated to Centra lynchburg General hospital in close proximity to the emergency department. relocating the pediatric center to lynchburg General Hospital means children will no longer have to be transported from the emergency department to Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital. pediatric patients also will benefit from the specialized services offered at lynchburg General Hospital. The new private pediatric rooms have been designed with the needs of the patient, family and caregivers in mind. The center features a state-of-the-art security system, cardiac and respiratory monitoring capabilities and data entry systems. The bright and cheerful environment offers the highest level of clinical care in a loving, supportive environment that focuses on the special health and healing needs of children. The pediatric Center is a result of a Centra Foundation capital campaign. The Centra Foundation and the Children’s Miracle network thank the community for donating more than $615,000 to make the new Centra pediatric Center a reality.

LAnnED gIvIngPEight Ways to Make a Bequest... And a Difference

passing your assets through your will to the people and causes you care about is easy. Here are accepted ways to make a gift to Centra in your will, known as a bequest. For additional information on how to establish bequests, please contact your legal counsel.

Specific bequest. This is a gift of a specific item to a specific beneficiary. For example, “I gave my golf clubs to my nephew John.” If that specific property has been disposed of before death, the bequest fails and no claim can be made to any other property. (In other words, John wouldn’t receive the value of the golf clubs instead.)

General bequest. This is usually a gift of a stated sum of money. It will not fail, even if there is not sufficient cash to meet the bequest. For example, “I gave $50,000 to my daughter Mary.” If there is only $2,500 cash in the estate, other assets must be sold to meet the bequest.

contingent bequest. This is a bequest made on the condition that a certain event must occur before distribution to the beneficiary. For example, “I gave $50,000 to my sonJoe, provided he enrolls in college before age 21.” a contingent bequest is specificin name and fails if the condition is not met. (a contingent bequest is also appropriateif you want to name a secondary beneficiary, in case the primary beneficiary doesn’t survive you.)

residuary bequest. This is a gift of all the “rest, residue and remainder” of your estate after all other bequests, debts and taxes have been paid. For example, say you have an estate worth $500,000, and you intend to give a child $50,000 by specific bequest and leave the balance of the residuary estate to your spouse.

Unrestricted bequest. This is a gift for Centra’s general purpose to be used at the discretion of Centra Foundation’s governing board. a gift like this – without conditions attached – is frequently the most useful, as it allows us to determine the wisest and most pressing need for the funds at the time of receipt.

restricted bequest. This type of gift allows you to specify how the funds are to beused. perhaps you have a special purpose or project in mind. If so, it’s best toconsult the Foundation when you make your will to be certain your intent can be carried out.

honorary or memorial bequest. This is a gift given in honor of or in memory ofsomeone. Centra is pleased to honor your request and has many ways to grant appropriate recognition.

endowed bequest. This bequest allows you to restrict the principal of your gift, requiring Centra to hold the funds permanently and use only a small percentage of the income the funds generate. Creating an endowment in this manner means that your gift can continue giving indefinitely.

Dawson led the transformation of Centra from two community hospitals to a major

healthcare system nationally recognized for quality and safety. today, nonprofit Centra

has 6,000 employees, a medical staff of more than 400, lynchburg General, Virginia Baptist

and Southside Community hospitals, health and rehabilitation centers, a cancer center and

physician practices serving an area from Bedford to Farmville and from nelson County to

Danville. In addition, Centra’s services include residential and outpatient mental health

facilities, home health and hospice programs, mammography centers, a sleep disorders

center and a center for wound care and hyperbaric medicine.

Centra has had tremendous growth in its regional service area, earned dozens

of national awards for quality, service, safety and patient satisfaction, and is known for

its efficiency and financial stability. While Dawson is proud of these accomplishments,

he is quick to credit the results to a great team. “I’ve been privileged to work with so

many talented and caring Centra employees and great doctors,” he said. “Centra’s top

notch executives and dedicated community Board of Directors have focused on

excellent patient care for the entire region. We all have a lot of pride in what we do

and accomplish together.”

Michael Bryant was named the new president and Ceo of Centra in 2011. He has

more than 20 years experience leading two health systems—Methodist and the robert

Wood Johnson university Hospital at Hamilton in Hamilton, n.J. Methodist has earned

national prominence for quality and patient and physician satisfaction. like Centra,

Methodist Medical Center is recognized for its overall excellence, quality of services,

safety, advanced technology and dedication to serving the health and medical needs of

the regional community. Methodist holds a number of national top honors also earned

by Centra, including twice receiving Magnet, nursing’s highest national honor.

After three decades of visionary leadership, Centra President and CEO George W. Dawson retired in the fall of 2011.

the centra Foundation’s mission is to develop resources to enhance and enrich the services, programs and facilities of centra Lynchburg General, Southside community and virginia Baptist hospitals and other centra subsidiaries and to assist the centra system in meeting and solving community health problems. One major objective of the foundation is to sponsor centra projects and programs that address

community health issues, including developing the resources to fund care for needy patients. In addition, the foundation helps provide the equipment and facilities necessary to ensure excellent health care to patients. the foundation also funds scholarships for deserving students who wish to pursue nursing careers in central virginia.
