Drafting a message for Ravinia Festival’sannual report is a convenient excuse tolook back on a summer filled with goodfriends and glorious music just as the daysbegin to darken early and thetemperatures drop. What’s even morepleasing is to announce that in 2011,Ravinia not only achieved but surpassed itsearned and contributed income goalswhile satisfying the varied tastes of nearly600,000 music lovers who applaudedmore than 100 separate events.

Drawn to our diverse programming, which is more than 60 percent classical, and inspired by Ravinia’s three-prongedphilanthropic mission to sustain classicalmusic, return music to schools through ourREACH*TEACH*PLAY educationprograms, and to maintain the nonprofitfestival’s beautifully landscaped setting, contributors helped us achieve a record-breaking year. Not only did Ravinia seegrowth in the amount of donations, butalso in the numbers of people makingthose contributions. An expansion of thedonor base is difficult any time, but isastounding in this tough economy.

Let me thank those individuals, foundations and corporations that havegenerously supported Ravinia, with specialgratitude to UBS, the festival’s leadsponsor since 2004.

A key factor to our success, I believe,is Ravinia’s dedication to the customerexperience. Despite being a long-established institution, Ravinia is forward-focused and willing to evolve. Under theleadership of our President and CEO WelzKauffman, whose first goal was to improvethe festival’s infrastructure, this pastdecade has seen more improvements toour park and to the concert experiencethan any other period in our 107-yearhistory. We’ve tripled the opportunities todine in a weather-controlled atmospherewith our award-winning dining pavilion;we’ve rebuilt our donor parking lots to beecologically friendly and attractive; we’veintroduced mobility carts to help customers

who need assistance traveling betweenkey locations in the park; we’ve addedvideo screens in the pavilion that giveaudiences views of the concerts like neverbefore, including carefully timed, score-specific close-ups of musicians and evenkeyboard players’ hands in action; and in2011 we opened our new grand entrancethat gives people a sense of occasionwhen they arrive at the park along with theconvenience of an underpass to the trainsthat so famously stop at our front gate.

We’re already working on what mightcome next. In 2011 our incrediblyengaged Board of Trustees initiated a long-range planning process to consider furtherimprovements to our facilities, technology, education programs, customer experienceand classical programming. I thank myfellow trustees for all their hard work onthis project, and in all areas of governingthe festival. The results speak forthemselves. I specifically want toacknowledge five new trustees who joinedthis august board in 2011: restaurantproprietor Keene Addington; MarkBergsrud of United; Gary Levin of DeloitteFinancial Advisory Services LLP; MichaelGervasio of KPMG LLP; and MarkGerstein of Latham & Watkins.

Looking toward the future also meanscontinuing our relationship with theincomparable Chicago SymphonyOrchestra. Work has begun on a long-termcontract to retain the CSO, whose summerresidency Ravinia has hosted since 1936.That makes it the longest and mostsuccessful musical marriage in the world, and a great benefit to both organizations.

I must also thank Jeanne Denison andour dedicated Women’s Board, who setthe bar high for so many events, includingour annual gala, while also contributingsignificantly to our bottom line. Specialthanks go to our Ravinia Associates, aboard of young professionals thatpromises a bright future for the festival. The Women’s Board started Ravinia’seducation programs decades ago, and

both these groups are instrumental to oureducation activities, including our “ElSistema”-inspired student orchestras. Weare looking forward to starting a newstudent orchestra in 2012.

Ravinia’s approach to educationcontinues into the shaping of professionalmusicians through our summerconservatory, the Steans Music Institute. We’ve integrated this program into the restof the festival, giving more visibilitythrough main-stage concerts to itsparticipants, who receive fully paidfellowships to study with an esteemedfaculty and the great artists who headlinehere. To ensure the future of this program,Ravinia has a launched a campaign togrow the endowment of SMI.

In conclusion 2011 was a tremendousyear for Ravinia Festival, critically andfinancially. This success is not just amemory to keep us warm through winterbut also a challenge to do it all again in afew short months.

Robert D. Krebs, Chairman Ravinia Festival Board of Trustees

Listening to a steam calliope pump out “Bill BaileyWon’t You Please Come Home”—the first musical performance at the newly mintedRavinia over a century ago—who could havepredicted that this one-time amusement parkwould host the annual summer residency of theinestimable Chicago Symphony Orchestra? In2011 we celebrated the 75th anniversary of thisspecial relationship.

The prime reason I came to Ravinia 12 yearsago was to bring the brilliant Chicago SymphonyOrchestra to new audiences for classical music. As a sort of Carnegie Hall without walls, Ravinia, with its eclectic programming (something differentevery day!), combined with our natural andwelcoming setting,is the perfect place to giveclassical music a try. Our 17-concert CSOresidency in 2011 showcased the variety andversatility of the mighty ensemble with a worldpremiere, timeless classic repertoire, superstarvirtuosos, two movie nights, a complete opera, two major commissions and a multi-layeredcelebration of the bicentennial of the birth ofcharismatic composer/pianist/media superstar Franz Liszt. The 19th-centurymusical genius was celebrated all summer as acomposer, a mentor, a foil, a showman andinventor of the master class and the solo pianorecital.

There may not have been all the same peoplein the audience (and that’s a good thing), but thecrowds were equally pleased by the best ToscaI’ve ever heard—with our brilliant Music DirectorJames Conlon leading the CSO and soloistsPatricia Racette, Bryn Terfel and the lateSalvatore Licitra in his final performance—as theywere by our big-screen extravaganza that hadthe CSO perform the Oscar-winning score to TheLord of the Rings—The Fellowship of the Ring liveduring showings of the film.

Our indefatigable music director has come offan extraordinary year with the CSO (here anddowntown, by invitation of Maestro Ricardo Muti)that included his conclusion of a multiyear Mahlercycle, a brilliant teaming with Yo-Yo Ma, and aworld premiere commissioned by Ravinia fromNico Muhly for orchestra and five pianos (withthe 5 Browns making their CSO debut!) and, ofcourse, that perfect Tosca. Other highlights of theresidency included Christoph von Dohnanyiconducting two back-to-back Brahms eveningswith Emanuel Ax playing both piano concertos, and singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright makinghis CSO debut with his own 5 ShakespeareSonnets, commissioned by Ravinia.

To help attract new listeners to the CSO, wecreated a preview edition of Ravinia Magazinethat was hand-delivered to 400,000 households. We also created a CSO program guide direct-mailed to 200,000 households—all in addition toour regular brochure and advertising. We alsoworked with a student marketing team chargedwith creating a peer-to-peer campaign to

encourage high school students to takeadvantage of free concerts in their own backyardby one of the world’s most important ensembles. The kids also devised a pre-concert event theycalled “Cannon Ball,” a pun based on thatevening’s programming of the “1812” Overture, that attracted students from as far as Michigan.

Building on our reputation as a family-friendlyvenue, we made it even easier to attend. In 2011we made it free for all children through age 15 toattend any classical concert on the lawn—including the centerpiece of our programming, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which hasplayed Ravinia in its annual summer residencysince 1936. We even had a free lawn dayfeaturing music of Mozart, Tchaikovsky andDvorák. High school and college students whopresented a school-issued I.D. at the box officealso were given free lawn admission to classicalconcerts. A special 10-punch pass was alsomade available to all men and women serving inthe military that allowed them to attend classicalconcerts for only $4 each.

We’ve also responded to our customers whohave asked for more alternative “classical”programs, whether it’s a film night like The Lordof the Rings or a performance by 11-year-oldsinging sensation Jackie Evancho or thestunningly innovative dance company Momix, whose wildly acclaimed dance-theater workBotanica was one of 50 Ravinia premieres in2011.

Aside from classical, we offered a widevariety of favorite “oldies” (Deep Purple, DaveBrubeck, Tony Bennett, who, as part of his 85thbirthday celebration, rededicated the painting hemade of Ravinia), “goodies” (Chicago, SteelyDan, Doobie Brothers) and 50 debuts, includingMaroon 5, Guster and Jack’s Mannequin andChicago’s own Oscar- and Grammy-winnerJennifer Hudson.

We unveiled our new grand entrance, buteven bigger, in a way, was our reimagining ofan existing space, the wonderfully intimate 450-seat Bennett Gordon Hall. We’ve thoroughlyengaged this performance space with a series of$10 concerts (the cost of going to a movie!) ledby the incredibly talented fellows from our ownsummer conservatory, The Steans Music Institute(SMI). No longer will we hide this light under abushel. Each year SMI fully funds around 60-70fellowships that give the next generation ofheadliners the opportunity to study individually, ingroups and with a talented faculty, includingpublic master classes with such festival favoritesas singer Sylvia McNair and our own talentedand tireless Music Director James Conlon.

The $10 series also a featured standoutperformances by award-winning singer/actressLaura Benanti, cellist Zuill Bailey, pianist andFrom the Top radio show host ChristopherO’Riley, pianist Valentina Lisitsa and exceedinglypopular jazz pianist Eldar.

Ravinia has taken a leadership role in culturaleducation. I had the great pleasure this year to siton the board of the Chicago Arts LearningInitiative (now called Ingenuity Inc.) that isorganizing the efforts of all arts institutionsworking with CPS students in order to streamlineprocesses, identify needs and reduceredundancies. We have a better picture of thearts education landscape in Chicago than we’veever had before.

As they head into their 50th anniversary year,I’d like to thank the members of the Women’sBoard of Ravinia Festival for constant inspiration. It was this group of intrepid volunteers whostarted Ravinia’s earliest education programs, and they continue to lead the way in today’sREACH*TEACH*PLAY programs, working on thecreation of a second elementary school orchestrain the “El Sistema” mode. I thank the RaviniaAssociates and all of our supporters, particularlyour lead sponsor, UBS.

I’d also like to acknowledge our partners atChicago Botanic Garden, Kohl Children’sMuseum and Writers’ Theatre for joining us underthe banner DO NORTH to make our region acultural attaction for all Chicagoland.

Finally I thank a Board of Trustees for whomstewardship is “DO diligence.” It’s so great to seethem attending the concerts and events that theymake happen. Ravinia would not exist withouttheir leadership. In fact, I just answered my ownopening question: It is people like this who wouldhave foreseen the great future of Ravinia and itsenviable relationship with the CSO.

bicentennial of the birth of Franz Liszt, playing the Liszt Piano Concerto No.1. He alsoperformed Chopin’s Andante spianato and Grande Polonaise on a program that includedBerlioz’s Symphonie fantastique conducted by Lang Lang’s mentor Christoph Eschenbach.

On July 30, Ravinia Music Director James Conlon (top left) led the CSO in a thrillingconcert performance of Puccini’s beloved Tosca starring tenor Salvatore Licitra (topright) as Cavarodossi, the artist-revolutionary whose love for the tempestuous Tosca

(soprano Patricia Racette, bottom left) is thwarted by the evil and corrupt chief of police Scarpia(bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, bottom right). Filling out Puccini’s sonic tapestry was the ApolloChorus of Chicago and Chicago Children’s Choir.

excerpts from this year’s One Score, One Chicago selection, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. Ittruly was a night of music “From Russia—With Love.”

By George, the Women’s Board of Ravinia Festival hosted an incredible Gala Benefit Evening onJuly 23, honoring the 75th anniversary of George Gershwin’s one and only Ravinia appearance. An all-star lineup of great Gershwin interpreters (above, from left)—singers Kelli O’Hara, Brian

Stokes Mitchell, Sylvia McNair and pianist Kevin Cole—dazzled the audience in a program thatreproduced much of the repertoire Gershwin himself performed here in 1936. The CSO, itselfcelebrating the 75th anniversary of their Ravinia summer residency, was heroically led by David AlanMiller, who graciously stepped in on short notice for an ailing James Conlon.

The musical family phenomenon called The 5 Browns—a quintet of talented siblings who allattended The Juilliard School and now make music simultaneously on five grand pianos—returnedto Ravinia for their resounding Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut on August 9. Making the

occasion all the more special was the world premiere of The Edge of the World, a work RaviniaFestival commissioned especially for them and the CSO by one of today’s leading compositionaltalents, Nico Muhly. The concert, led by Ravinia Music Director James Conlon, also includedShostakovich’s triumphant Fifth Symphony.

Part dance, part abstract art, and pure magic, Moses Pendelton’s wildly inventive troupe Momix made an indelible impression with their Ravinia debut performances on September9 and 10. The vehicle they chose, Botanica, was an eye-popping celebration of the

determination with which plants, in the words of Maurice Maeterlinck, strive to “approachanother kingdom, to enter a moving, animated world”—a quote that applies equally well to the brilliant young dancers of Momix.

&QA For several years now, as part of our ongoing attempts toestablish a less formal and more casual relationship betweenperforming artists and audiences, Ravinia has invited ourartists to respond to a brief, informal interview feature we call“Q&A,” in which they are asked to answer a number ofdecidedly frivolous questions. Some choose not to respond atall; others provide only one-word answers. But some reallytake them to heart and make the effort to reveal a part of theirpersonality that might not come across from the stage. We’dlike to share some of the more interesting replies with you.

One especially fertileground for our artistswas the question,“Do you have anannoying habit?” Forpianist ChristopherO’Riley, it was“Wolfing my food.”Country musicsensation CarrieUnderwooddescribed her hidden

vice thusly: “I can sometimes be a little obsessive aboutsome things. I have to have my fridge and pantrycompletely organized, and if anyone puts somethingback in the wrong place, heaven help them!” She seemsto have a kindred spirit in the person of baritoneNathan Gunn, who confided, “I don’t think it’sannoying, but others might: I like loading thedishwasher in a way that makes sense so that it’s easyto unload after the cycle is over.” Vocalist Laura Benantiexplained, “I say ‘I’m sorry’ all the time, even whenthere is absolutely no reason to do so. It’s a really weirdand annoying habit!” Marta Aznavoorian of The LincolnTrio dodged the issue a bit by replying, “Not that I knowof! However, my pet peeve is when I can hear peoplechewing their gum. It doesn’t look very pretty, either.”Violinist Ray Chen admitted, “Yes—checking myFacebook 10 times a day. Any less and I start havingwithdrawal symptoms.”

Time seems to be at the heart of the vices of several ofour summer guests. John Oates, of the legendary rock duo Hall & Oates, claims “I am very punctual, which isa character flaw as a musician.” This is in contrast to

Colin Jacobsen, first violinist of The Knights chamberorchestra, who reveals “I’m overly optimistic with time, thinking it’s possible to be in two places simultaneously, which can translate regularly as 15 minutes late.” Andpianist Valentina Lisitsa really unburdened her soul onthe subject: “I am the biggest procrastinator withanything but music. My ‘business’ communication isalways in dismal shape. Hey, I am even responding tothis Q&A an evening before the deadline, even though Ihad it for a month! I just keep adding red flag ‘to dolist’ to my e-mails, and they keep piling up. I have verytempting fantasies about declaring an email‘bankruptcy’—just send an apologetic email toeverybody on my ‘to do’ list, close my e-mail account, and start anew with a new address. It is not going tohelp, though. To add insult to injury, I am not a ‘phoneperson.’ Somehow, since childhood I have had a ‘duckand cover’ reaction to a ringing phone. I would rathergo to dentist than have a meaningful conversation onthe phone. I can’t get rid of this habit—to my uttershame.”

Perhaps the most offbeat “annoying habits” are those ofAdam Gardner, Ryan Miller and Brian Rosenworcel, thethree members of rockgroup Guster. Ryan: “I finisheveryone’s sentences for them.” Brian:

“Sexting? Answering interview questions with onlysarcasm?” And not to be outdone, Adam: “I love to pickmy nose and am not ashamed to do so in public, muchto my wife’s chagrin.”

Miriam Fried, directorof the program forpiano and strings atRavinia’s Steans MusicInstitute, tells us whathappens after aconcert: “A concert is acelebration, and I donot really feel that Ineed to ‘wind down’after it. came, once again, from Guster’s drummer BrianRosenworcel: “I usually put my hands in a bucket of iceright when we get off stage so my fingers aren’t soinflamed when it’s time to abuse the hand drums againthe next day.”

The question of “What is the best compliment you everreceived and from whom?” also elicited some intriguingreplies. For Valentina Lisitsa it was “from a randomonline fan who wrote to thank me for what he called‘disturbing playing.’ This is the best compliment indeed.I dislike smooth, pleasant, non-denominational musicmaking—the kind one hears in elevator or upscalebakeries. I am not an entertainer-pianist, not a feel-goodpianist; my aim is to disturb listeners into the most deepand profound emotions they are capable of.” BrianRosenworcel didn’t hesitate: “This is an easy one. Weopened for Sting once in Columbus, and he must havewatched our set, because he stormed into our dressingroom afterwards and asked me how on Earth I played

the drums that way nightafter night, adding, ‘Iought to give you aSting Medal for . .something.’ It wasn’texactly a compliment, now that I think aboutit. I think it came from aplace of concern.”

Violinist Ilmar Gavilan of the Harlem Quartet said thegroup’s best compliment came “from Chick Corea, whosaid, ‘I cried trough the whole performance of myquartet. You guys made it sound better than what Iwrote!’” John Oates still prides himself on a complimenthe received from bluegrass mandolin player Sam Bush, who said “Nashville is a better place now that Oates ishere in town.” Pat Simmons of The Doobie Brothersquotes “‘You’re the best dad in the world’—from mykids, right before they said I was a jerk!” MartaAznavoorian’s favorite is a bit more lofty: “After Iperformed a concert at a middle school down state, ayoung girl told me afterwards that when I am playing, Ilook as if I am looking at heaven.”

Tessa Lark recalls that “a man once came up to me aftera concert and told me that he was there with his elderlymother who for years hadn’t smiled because of severepains she wasexperiencing fromchronic arthritis. After Iplayed, he said, shewas grinning ear toear; he was astonishedand asked her if herpain was gone andshe said, ‘Of coursenot, I feel awful—but Ithink I just heard thebest violinist of mylife!’ To bring a smileback to someone'sface, through such physical pain, is the most I could askfor from a performance, and certainly one of thegreatest compliments I’ve ever encountered.” WaltParazaider of the rock group Chicago had a lot to sayon this one, too: “This is a pretty tough one. Hard topinpoint the best one because I have been fortunate tohave many people say very nice things about me. Iwould narrow it down to two. Jimi Hendrix said thehorns are like one set of lungs and wanted to record analbum with us. But, unfortunately, that didn’thappen because of his passing. The second would beCannonball Adderly saying I started a really greatband. As a point of information, I saw Cannonball afew times at Ravinia when I was a very youngmusician.”

Some of the compliments were a bit more whimsical.Chris O’Riley got his “at Ravinia Festival after my first all-

Radiohead recital, from [fellow pianist] Claude Frank: ‘Idon’t know Radiohead from a hole-in-the-head, but Iloved the piano-playing and I loved the music.’” LauraBenanti shared, “Patti LuPone told me I should be astand-up comedian. That was pretty cool.” And AdamGolka no longer remembers who said it, but claims hisgreatest compliment was, “Great shoes!”

One other surprising result came from the collectiveanswers to “What is your favorite movie of all time?”Nowhere were the expected results of The Wizard ofOz or Gone with the Wind or Citizen Kane; instead wegot To Kill a Mockingbird (Laura Benanti), The Tree ofLife (Christopher O’Riley), Guess Who’s Coming toDinner (Walt Parazaider), The Royal Tenenbaums (MartaAznavoorian), Pixar’s Up (Bella Hristova), Fight Club(Adam Levine of Maroon 5), “a tie between Where theWild Things Are and Fight Club (pianist Conrad Tao),The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Steanscellist Nathan Vickery), Cinema Paradiso (PatSimmons), Patton (John Oates), Lisztomania (ValentinaLisitsa), the Halloween movies (Carrie Underwood), just

about any “Western directedby Clint Eastwood” (NathanGunn) and Pee Wee’s BigAdventure (BrianRosenworcel): “Next week Iwill show it to [my 3-year-olddaughter] and she will havenightmares about Large Margefor the rest of her childhood.”

But the most vociferousresponse came from severalfans of the 1998 CoenBrothers comedy, The BigLebowski, which was namedby Adam Golka as his favorite

movie (and responded tothe next question, “Whatwould be the most difficultthing for you to give up?”with “My favorite movie”),Gilles Vonsattel (who placedit in a tie with 2001: ASpace Odyssey, citing“great music in both”) andboth Colin Jacobsen andconductor Eric Jacobson ofThe Knights. Ericapproached it gradually, pointing out that “TheGraduate, The Godfatherand Star Wars all hold veryspecial places in my heart, but without The BigLebowski, where would our generation be?” His brotherColin elaborated: “Within The Knights, we probablycould act out the whole movie, line by line. Every detailof the absurd plot is lovingly cared for. And thesoundtrack is great: Mozart, Meredith Monk,Kenny Rogers, Gipsy Kings, Moondog, Dylan andmore. ‘The Dude Abides.’’

Breaking ground immediatelyfollowing the 2010 season,Ravinia completed the $5 milliongrand entrance pedestrianunderpass that connects the mainparking lot to the festival groundsat the Tyler Gate entrance underthe Metra train tracks. Designedby JJR, this handicapped-accessible ADA-compliantunderpass features a concreterelief panel displaying the name“Ravinia” camouflaged in a reliefimage of birch trees. The newstructure eliminates long wait timesin the parking lot for customerswho cannot enter the groundswhile trains are unloading. In thepast, wait times were as long as30 minutes when the northboundand southbound trains arrivedconsecutively. Ravinia staff and itscontractors worked closely withrepresentatives from Union PacificRailroad and the City of HighlandPark for two years to plan thisproject.

The grand entrance officiallyopened on the first day of the2011 season, June 9, when theacclaimed Chicago Children’sChoir broke through a bannerwhich featured a reprint of ahistoric photo of Ravinia’s trainline, stretched across the tunnelwhile they sang a spiritual. Theopening festivities also included akiddie train ride in the park, an“instrument petting zoo,” wherekids could try out musicalinstruments, prizes and train safetyinformation provided by Metra.

The not-for-profit Ravinia Festival has contributed $780,655 to itshometown of Highland Park, announced festival President and CEOWelz Kauffman. This is the third year of a 10-year agreement throughwhich the festival donates 5 percent of its annual gross ticket revenue tothe city for its use as needed. This is the largest amount donated to date, following $758,000 in 2010 and $710,000 in 2009, for a total ofnearly $2.25 million.

“We are so appreciative of the contributions Ravinia Festival makesto our community as a world-class performing arts center, a popularsocial destination, and as an economic engine for our city,” saidHighland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering. “It has been and continues to beour pleasure to partner with Ravinia Festival.”

“Ravinia Festival and the City of Highland Park have grown uptogether, and this agreement demonstrates that when Ravinia issuccessful, Highland Park is successful,” Kauffman said. “Highland Parkis an extraordinary community filled with consumers of culture. That’sone reason why Ravinia is able to thrive and evolve with suchimprovements as our new grand entrance and underpass.”

Prior to this agreement, Ravinia supported Highland Park bycontributing more than $2.7 million over 13 years to local not-for-profitsthrough YEA Highland Park, which distributed these funds to agenciesdedicated to youth, education, the arts and social programs. The city ofHighland Park continues to fund YEA with a portion of Ravinia’s annualcontribution under the new arrangement.

A study conducted by an independent research firm determinedthat Ravinia Festival is a boon to the local economy, indicating thatconcertgoers spend an average of $60 to $90 outside the venue witheach visit. The venue also hires many local residents, with over 100employed in 2009, not counting police officers and restaurant staffs. The venue also waives $100,000 in fees for Township High School

District 113 to graduate from the pavilion stage in two separateceremonies each June.

Ravinia remains an active member of the Highland Park Chamberof Commerce, through which we awarded our sixth annual $1,000scholarship to a Highland Park student endeavoring to study music incollege. Our REACH*TEACH*PLAY department continues to work withSchool District 112, including its annual “Kids Go Classic” eventintended to introduce elementary schoolchildren to symphonic music, distributing 1,200 free tickets.

Ravinia was actively involved in planning the “Focus on the Arts”immersion week at Highland Park High School. We introduced an artsmarketing class at Highland Park High School in which 13 motivatedstudents were charged with the task of peer-to-peer marketing of theCSO to other high school students. We implemented their plans, whichincluded a competition between high schools. Each time a high schoolstudent showed a valid I.D. for FREE lawn admission to a CSO concert,he/she received one point. At the end of the summer, the school with themost points would win $5,000 for its music programs. A second, relatedplan invited kids from all high schools for a social “meet-up.” Thestudents named it the Cannon Ball, a pun borne of the evening’s concertprogram featuring the “1812” overture. More than 200 students from asfar as Michigan attended that pre-concert party and many of them thenexperienced the CSO for the first time. In the end, Highland Park HighSchool pressed home court advantage to win the $5,000—which wasgenerously donated by the Ravinia Associates.

Like it, tweet it, snap it,tag it, post it and share. Ravinia is listening and sharing with its audience in a wholenew way with social media. While our big-hitters areFacebook and Twitter garnering over 25,000 fans andfollowers, our presence does not stop there. We are activelyengaging with our audience on LinkedIn, Flickr, Picasa,Instagram, FourSquare, Last.fm, and more recently, Spotify. Our patrons engaged with our social media in recordnumbers. Facebook had an unprecedented double-digitpercentage increase over previous seasons.

Our twitter photo caption contest helped catapult ChicagoSymphony Orchestra’s presentation of Lord of the Rings: theFellowship of the Ring to be one of the most successfulChicago Symphony Orchestra performances in Raviniahistory. For the night of the Lord of the Rings presentations, and two additional shows afterwards, we turned our lawnscreen into a LIVE Twitter feed that audience members couldtweet at using special hash tags and watch as their tweetcame up in real-time on the giant screen. Ravinia-ran photocaption contests, a marriage proposal, photos of picnics, and audience-ran trivia games on the lawn, via the Twitterwall, were just some of the highlights of the evening and thisis only the beginning.

From a REACH*TEACH*PLAY concert at Hibbard to a $25special CSO concert for the July 31 Tchaikovsky spectacular, our audience can’t seem to get enough Ravinia, and as oursocial media presence strengthens, it will be easier than everto truly bring the experience Ravinia anywhere.
