Providing the tools homeless and low-income

families need to break the cycle of homelessness

and poverty. Cutting edge and client centered,

Compass gives a leg up – not just a handout.

As we get closer to a century of helping San Franciscans in need, we feel that it’s a perfect time

to not only celebrate the many accomplishments of our client families, but also to examine

how we can continue to challenge ourselves for an even greater impact.

Last year Compass Family Services diverted 345 families

from shelter into permanent housing. A hundred and twelve

homeless and very low-income children thrived in Compass’

enriched early childhood education programs and 24 of

these entered kindergarten on an equal footing with their

peers. We provided thousands of referrals to help parents

and their children gain access to the services they needed

most.

We know that our services have transformed lives, but

we remain keenly aware that hundreds of families in San

Francisco are in need of shelter each night. Our highly

effective rental subsidy programs are only able to provide

support to a fraction of eligible families, and thousands of

children in San Francisco are growing up without the basic

stability that will enable them to escape the vicious cycles

of homelessness and poverty.

We want to see a city in which living with dignity is not

a luxury for any family. We want to ensure that the most

vulnerable among us have an advocate for their success and

well-being. We want to continue to hold ourselves account-

able to the highest possible standards for those who have

entrusted us as their guide.

There are no simple solutions to the problems of family

homelessness and poverty, but as we approach our centennial

year, we remain confident that Compass Family Services is

well positioned to be a leader and an inspiration to anyone

who is willing to stand with San Francisco families. We will

continue to be nimble, adaptable and uncompromising in

our commitment to our clients and we will continue to

collaborate in the many partnerships that make Compass

Family Services a safety net for families in distress. This is a

pledge that we make to all of you who have supported our

work over the years, but most importantly it is a pledge that

we make to our client families.

We are truly grateful that you have come this far with

Compass Family Services, and together we can all move

forward toward a future of unlimited possibilities.

Sincerely,

Erica K isch, Executive Director, Compass Family Services

At compass, we believe that our families’ dreams, no matter how big or how small, deserve the chance to become a reality. Because nurturing a dream without a place to call home is almost impossible, housing stability is at the core of every compass Family Services program.

Throughout this calendar, we will be

sharing the work of a young visual artist

named Max Pauson. At 24, Max is no

stranger to homelessness. As a child, he

spent years living in shelters with his

mother, including a stretch at Compass

Family Shelter, in large part taking care

of himself and miraculously finding

ways to immerse himself in school and

the arts.

Despite his determination and talent,

being a kid without a strong support

system wasn’t easy and Max had his

share of trouble including a period of

drug use. What Max did have, however,

was a long-term relationship with

Compass Family Services and our Clinical

Director, Susan Reider, who has known

and looked out for him since he was

in the second grade. With her support,

Max applied and was accepted to several

prestigious design programs and earned

a full scholarship to Art Center College

of Design in Pasadena.

Max recently graduated with a BA in il-

lustration. He is now in the midst of a

six-month paid internship with Disney

Animation Studios and will then join

the Peace Corps. His art throughout this

calendar reflects not only the pain of

homelessness, but also the incredible re-

silience of the human spirit and dreams

that refuse to be crushed.

In 2012, we saw the number of families on

San Francisco’s family shelter waiting list,

managed by compass connecting Point, rise

dramatically. unwilling to let these families

languish for months before being offered a

shelter placement, compass Family Services

decided to take a more proactive approach.

With special funding provided through the

Home for the Holidays initiative by the San

the strength of the relationships that Alvaro and the rest of

the compass team build with their clients is at the core of

compass Family Services’ effectiveness in helping families

move toward long-lasting stability and self-sufficiency.

“I started crying in a meeting with Alvaro one day because

I was so overwhelmed. I couldn’t figure out how I was going

to work, go to school and take care of my kids. I almost

choked when he said, “Stop, don’t you dare cry.” After living

with an abusive partner for a long time, I felt my heart skip

a beat, but then he went on to say, “You can do this. No one

said that it is going to be easy, but that’s why you have me.

Now you dry your eyes and let’s get to work.”

TIFFANY CARTER , Compass SF HOME Client

celebraTe!At compass Family Services we know that helping families to celebrate important occasions

goes a long way toward helping parents and children reach their full potential. From our

amazing holiday parties and Adopt-a-Family project to the special contributions of individual

volunteers and the many corporate volunteer groups who contribute their time throughout the

year, compass knows how to make families smile!

“I love decorating cakes, and thought it would be fun to share my hobby with others. I remember how special birthdays were when I was little. It warms my heart to think that something as simple as baking a cake can bring so much joy to a child. I try to take the time to make each cake just as the children request to make their birthday extra special.”
