Leading the fight to stop seizures, find a cure and overcome the challenges created by epilepsy.

The Epilepsy Foundation leads the fight to stop seizures, find a cure, and overcome the challenges created by epilepsy. Epilepsy affects approximately 10,000 Delawareans at any given moment with 27,500 affected at some point during their lifetime. As a disorder that affects the entire family, this can impact 110,000 Delawareans. The Epilepsy Foundation of Delaware offers a variety of services to meet the needs of people with epilepsy and their families. Our services are offered statewide and without fees. In total the Epilepsy Foundation of Delaware served over 6,000 children, youth and adults from July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014. Core programs and services include the following:

Information & Service RequestsSupport for families facing the challenges of epilepsy is an important service and one that goes beyond one simple call and entails ongoing support via phone and email. This year more than 100 families re-ceived individual support.

Support GroupsThe Epilepsy Foundation sponsors and facilitates group meetings in Newport, Delaware. Meetings offer individuals with epilepsy and their families a non-judgmental forum in which to exchange information, concerns, frustrations, and progress. A total of 55 people were served in support groups.

Emergency Medication AssistanceFunds are available to individuals with epilepsy who need help paying for prescriptions. Six individuals received up to a one-month supply of prescribed epilepsy medication.

Educational ProgramsAdditional education programs are offered to the general public, businesses, community groups across the state at no cost. A total of 249 were served by general education programs. This includes our bi-annual Seizure and Epilepsy Education seminar for families coping with seizure disorders and epilepsy in either children or adults.

Be Seizure Smart for TeensSince its inception eleven years ago, this program has reached more than 50,465 teens. This past year, we partnered with high school health teachers throughout Delaware to conduct 165 classes for 3,965 teens.

Law Enforcement & First Responder TrainingThe Epilepsy Foundation of Delaware offers to all three police academies, probation and parole officers, correctional officers, and Downtown Visions employees. This year 331 received law enforcement officers received training.

Teacher EducationTeachers are often the first to realize children are having non-con-vulsive seizures, so we continue to educate those who come in contact with children. This year 1,223 educators in 44 locations were reached. The total number of students impacted was over 11,000.

Training for Healthcare ProfessionalsOur focus on keeping the medical community well-versed in recognition and care for seizures allowed us to hold classes for students in certified nursing assistant, license practical nursing, physical therapy, and dental technician courses. A total of 294 healthcare professionals were trained.
