State President – Robyn Procter
It is with great pleasure that I present the Annual Report of Women's Bowls NSW for 2013-2014. The past 12 months have seen many changes. Women's Bowls NSW have introduced a new-look magazine, reviewed and relaxed the Dress Policy, changed our trading name, launched a new logo, taken our Board meetings into country areas and, as promised, met with many of our members at forums in different areas where special State events have been held. The independent review of the boundaries continues. The overall results of the survey are yet to be analysed by both Associations with any decision unlikely to be made in the near future. Information on the progress of the review will be given to all members when available. The Board continues to address the issues that may present challenges brought about by the new Constitution, including adhering to the principles of good governance and building an effective Board that recognises its accountability to its stakeholders. Each Director is continually updating her skills and knowledge in order to fulfil the requirements laid down by legislation and the Australian Sports Commission. It is indeed most satisfying to now have two Directors from country areas - Finance Director Anne Emms is from Mittagong and Nanette Jemmeson hails from Armidale. The remaining Directors, Pam Hockings, Beryl Watson, Sue O'Keefe and myself are all from Sydney suburbs. Sadly, the Board received and accepted resignations from Pam Andrich and Louise Tucker, and more recently Denise Huender, and on behalf of the Board, I thank them for their valuable contributions during their time with WBNSW. The Board's commitment to and the continuing implementation of the initiatives and priorities of the Strategic Plan have ensured meaningful and beneficial outcomes for the Association as a whole. The WBNSW 2014-2017 Strategic Plan is now in alignment with the Bowls Australia Strategic Plan and reviewed regularly to ensure changes in circumstances where appropriate are taken into account. A revised version is available on our website – www.womensbowlsnsw.org Our State squads have performed admirably whenever they have been asked to represent New South Wales. International and State titles have been won by NSW representatives, including a record third straight Marj Morris Trophy at the Australian Sides. Thanks to 2014 Coach/Selector Gary Willis and State Manager Debbie Schoemaker for their support. The Shoalhaven Region again was host to the 85th BCiB State Carnival. Stated by many of those attending as “the best ever”, the event was run again with the generous support of the Bomaderry Bowling Club, Shoalhaven City Council and new principal sponsor BCiB. The “Mad Hatter” Opening Dinner was attended by over 200 and included representatives from the Shoalhaven City Council, Bomaderry Bowling Club, Bowls NSW, Sponsors, WBNSW Directors and staff. The entertainment was again superb and the hospitality provided by the Bomaderry Club outstanding. A great start to a wonderful week of competition, friendship and fun. Special thanks to Chairman Pam Hockings and her Match Committee of Robyn Lewis, Jennifer Palmer and Joan Thomas as well as the Section Managers and Umpires for their time and expertise in running another successful event.

As the Association Delegate on the Bowls Australia Council I have attended meetings held in Melbourne and Sydney and reported back to the Board and members, and together with representatives from other States I am a member of the National Brand Working Party. I was very pleased to be present at the inaugural Australian Premier League held at Pine Rivers Bowling Club near Brisbane in November last year as well as attend the Bowls Australia Presentation Night in Burnie, Tasmania earlier this year. Bowl for Others continues to assist in helping those less fortunate in our communities. During September last year I was privileged to be present at the Luncheon and meet the recipients of the valuable funds raised. WBNSW acknowledges and will continue to recognise the dedication and work of this wonderful group. Sponsors play a vital role in our organisation and we are indeed fortunate to have a number who are continuously dedicated and generous with their support. We are extremely grateful to Bowls Australia and this year’s major events sponsors BCiB, St Johns Park Bowling Club, Warilla Bowling Club, Oak Flats Sporting and Recreation Club, Port City Bowling Club, Bomaderry Bowling Club, Cabramatta Bowling Club, Shoalhaven City Council and Port Stephens Council. Our thanks also to all sponsors and partners who contribute to the running of the Association, a full list can be seen on p 9. A very special and important aspect to being President is the opportunity to visit Districts and Clubs and to share in their celebrations. For myself and fellow Directors, each of these occasions have been most enjoyable, it has been an absolute pleasure to meet with our members, their important guests and learn about the history of the Clubs and Districts. Thank you for your kind invitations, we look forward to meeting many more members in the future. This year has been a most satisfying year. The Board has worked well together and I thank each of them for their dedication, time, effort and commitment to the Association. My congratulations go to the committees and staff for their devotion and contributions which have contributed to a productive and rewarding year. Robyn Procter President

CEO’s Report – Nicky Bethwaite
It’s a fascinating job being the CEO of such a robust and traditional sport as
lawn bowls, as the breadth of the day-to-day issues that come across my desk
is vast. In my second year as the senior administrator, the big picture strategy
of modernising both the game and the communications needed to be
balanced with the equally important club issues that many of you face.
Sometimes we do have to sweat the small stuff because if it doesn’t work at
the coalface, then the big picture can become irrelevant. To this end, I would
like to offer my wholehearted thanks to the Board for their support and
guidance, and to my wonderful staff who keep the office ticking over very
efficiently. It’s all about teamwork.
The big picture strategy is all about participation in the sport, trying to halt the slide of membership by analysing the
cause. Without a doubt, this is bigger than just us – all sports are trying to adapt to the significant societal changes
that are in our faces. The necessity of double-income families has a direct impact on the amount of time that people
have available for leisure activities, meaning that the traditional mid-week allocation of days for women to play
bowls discourages the 50 and 60 somethings to take up the sport.
Some of the changes that have been introduced in the past 12 months have been significant. For instance, changing
the name and logo of the Association is a signal that we are operating in a competitive marketplace and that we are
here to stay. We are always on the lookout for new sponsorship opportunities to help defray rising costs and to
provide a mutual platform with access to our members. Flexible playing policies are another area where the
Association has encouraged all clubs to look at alternative times and days of play, with a significant number of
members transferring clubs so that they have the option of weekend play. The Association has provided some
generic documents to assist with the wording to facilitate the changes and the feedback has been very positive.
Traditional uniform requirements for social days are also seen as a difficulty for new members so this is another
perceived barrier that has been removed this year.
Of course, one of the most obvious changes that has occurred during the 2013/14 financial year is the upgrade of
the magazine, Bowls Matters. This has been achieved at a reduced cost for a much higher quality production, and
the new graphics reflect a proud and positive image. My sincere thanks go to Nicola Abercrombie for facilitating the
liaison between the Board, Magazine Committee and the graphics designers and publishers, as well as for writing
incisive articles in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.
It is pleasing that in this time of reducing memberships and rising costs that the Association has been able to contain
its expenditure while still fulfilling our obligations to our members. A modest profit has been achieved, helped by
the return on investment of assets that have been accumulated over the years. It is now the ‘rainy day’ part of our
cycle and we are thankful to the judicious financial management over the years that have enabled us to stay strong
without impacting the membership or having to pass on the full costs of operating a business in 2014.
The steady management of the Association is well and truly a team effort – the Board, committees and staff work
well together, with minimum disruption. It is always a significant indicator that if something looks easy then you can
be sure there is a lot of effort that goes into making that occur. I am extremely grateful to Selam Woldemichael for
her management of membership data and making two IT systems functional, to Kate Wingrove for assisting with the

implementation of new coaching and umpiring systems as well as managing the logistics for the state team and to
Janine Kerr for accurate, regular and easily understood financial information.
Kylie Hartley is the friendly voice on the end of the telephone and has been with the team for six months. During
this time she has enhanced the office environment with her cheerful contribution.
We are saying farewell to Nicola Abercrombie who is off to Tennis NSW - her quick grasp of the sport has made the
communications of the Association consistent and intelligent and has set a benchmark for the next incumbent.
Lastly, I would like to thank the Board and committees for their help and support over the past 12 months.

Another busy and successful 12 months have passed for the Match Committee. Unfortunately the majority of the
feedback submitted about the Moratorium in the Pennants indicated it was not entered into in the proper spirit or
with the integrity we expected from some Clubs across NSW. It is unfortunate that more Clubs did not use this
opportunity to correctly grade their ability and enable their players to compete on a more level playing field in the
Pennant competition.
The successful achievers for all our State Championships, Pennants and events for the last 12 months are listed on p
48-49. We congratulate all these players on their success and wish them all the best in the 2014/15 events.
Once again we were forced to juggle the State Championships when the 2013 National Champion of Champions host
venue was changed. Our entrants in the Championships were Natasha Scott (Van Eldik) in the singles and Kerry
Farrell and Betty Herbertson in the pairs. While Natasha did not win her section to progress to the final, Kerry and
Betty saw it all the way to the end and emerged as the National winners. A wonderful effort and an inspiration to all
bowlers given this event begins at Club level.
In all State events and playoffs, we applaud the manner in which all players conducted themselves and thank them
for their co-operation and sportsmanship during all games. It makes the work of the Match Committee so much
easier when players are so obliging.
My thanks go to the members of the Match Committee - Robyn, Jenny and Joan - who give their time each week to
attend the Match Office and also for the countless hours of home time spent in preparation for each and every
event. Also to the Office staff – Nicky, Kate, Nicola, Selam and more recently Kylie - who assist members in their
enquiries and also in our preparation as well. To Janine Kerr, thanks for keeping the financial side of all events,
accommodation and all the incidentals on the straight and narrow. To all other State Committees and Board
Directors who have assisted at the Carnival and in other ways during the past 12 months, your efforts are also much
appreciated. Our thanks to Lesley on the Umpires Board and our memories of past umpire stalwart Audrey Gray will
continue to be an integral part of the history of the game in NSW. The work of the Match Committee is truly a TEAM
effort.
The Match Office cannot bring our events to fruition without the assistance of those mentioned above and also the
wonderful volunteers at all our venue Clubs used throughout the year. Club Presidents, social, markers, umpires
and greenkeepers all making their contributions and our various sponsors whose financial input is accepted with
gratitude and sincere thanks.

Umpires Board Lesley Swales (Chair)
The past 12 months have been a busy time for the Umpires Committee. In January 2014 we saw the introduction of
the new system for umpires. After a few initial teething problems we, together with Kate in the office, have
managed to get the system working well. New umpires have to apply to the office first after completing an
application form and this is then processed and the information sent to the sub-committees. Re-accrediting umpires
were sent reminder letters together with their re-accreditation application forms which they and their club had to
complete and forward to the office. The sub-committees were then advised accordingly.
To the District Umpires Sub-committees, thank you for your patience and help throughout the year. We must also
thank the Clubs and Greenkeepers who make their facilities available to the sub-committees.
Our thanks to all the local umpires who helped with our numerous State events throughout the year. It is much
appreciated.
Thanks to CEO Nicky and the administration staff, Kate, Selam, Nicola, Janine and Kylie for their assistance and co-
operation during the past year.
The year ended on a sad note for the Umpires Committee with the sudden passing of Audrey Gray. Audrey was a
valued member of the Committee for seven years and a friend and mentor to myself and others. She will be greatly
missed.

Coaching Panel Kathryn Chatillon (Chair) and Elizabeth McFarland
From August 2013 to February 2014 we have held Coaching Clinics at Lismore, Ulladulla, Asquith, Narromine,
Maroubra (two clinics), Beecroft, Double Bay and Cowra. Thanks to all host clubs for the positive reception and
hospitality, this has allowed WBNSW Coaching Panel to reach over 300 bowling members of both genders.
To Norma Barry and all our new and long standing Club and Introductory Coaches who have assisted me in working
on our Clinics, I do appreciate your commitment and willingness to give up your time.
Part of my duties as a Presenter and Assessor for Bowls Australia include facilitating courses for new Club and
Introductory Coaches. Listed below are the courses presented from July 2013 to July 2014:
Club Coach Course Camden, North Manly, Oak Flats, Pennant Hills, West Dubbo
Introductory Coach Neutral Bay
Selection Modules Asquith, North Manly, Pennant Hills
Reaccreditation (no longer required) Dundas, Lismore, Neutral Bay, North Manly, Taren Point
WBNSW now have 348 Club Coaches and reaccreditations are on the rise due to the new format. Introductory
Coaches are now been recognized as a valuable resource to Clubs.
As Chairman, I need to thank a number of people who have assisted me in 2014. Firstly, President Robyn and the
WBNSW Board members for the support shown towards WBNSW Coaching and particularly Denise Huender, who,
until recently, held the portfolio for coaching.
Thanks to CEO Nicky for her continued support of WBNSW Coaching, plus the WBNSW office staff, who are always
available to assist me on any occasion. Janine, Nicola, Selam and Kylie are always ready to assist where required and
it is most appreciated.
Elizabeth McFarland resigned midyear and I thank her for her time on the Panel. I hope the future will be positive
and thank you for your friendship and assistance in all areas of coaching.
Without our newest member, Kate Wingrove, I would have had a stressful time. Kate’s positive attitude and ongoing
support has helped me maintain an even keel when challenging situations occurred.
Working with such a strong team helps me to be proactive for the advancement of coaching in our State. There were
many changes this year and I am sure more to come. Without Club Coaches embracing the new format, your
WBNSW Coaching would not be as strong as it is.
Please accept my sincere gratitude and with this type of continued enthusiasm, 2015 will continue to see WBNSW
Coaching move forward.

Selection Committee Gary Willis (Chair)
Our representative teams and players have enjoyed another successful year, but believe it or not, we are going to be
even better in 2015.
With a team full of current and former Australian Representatives, it is easy to sit back and assume that our team
should be successful, however, actually completing the task of winning gold medals and team trophy championships
against the greatest players and teams across the country is never assured and never taken lightly.
NSW is currently blessed by the abundant talent in our representative teams from Under 18s, Under 25s and the
Open squad. This is no fluke and we can thank the work carried out by Clubs and their coaches/mentors for laying
the foundations to begin their bowls journey.
Presently, we are very lucky to have an excellent Under 18 program overseen by coaches Chris Green and Sharyn
Renshaw, as well as Selectors Neil Bayo and John Rodis. Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed being invited to tag
along to the junior camps and training sessions, learning more about the juniors as players and individuals. Chris and
Sharyn are really doing a wonderful job.
We continue to work hard through our National Training Centre program, ensuring that our state based athletes are
trained in all areas both on and off the green to be ready, when called upon, to play for Australia. Implementing
Bowls Australia's high performance philosophy and programs, focusing on the daily training environment for the
Australian Under 18, Australian emerging and NTC squad members as well as receiving sport specialist services from
the NSW Institute of Sport, our NSW athletes are given a fantastic platform.
We continue the planning and development of our NSW players aiming to continually raise the bar and give them all
the opportunity to be the best they can be. The working partnership within our administration, junior selectors,
open selectors and coaches in conjunction with our NTC program have all been major contributing factors to our
success/results over the last 12 months.
On the International scene NSW ladies have been well represented and performed very well.

Constitution Revision Board Robyn Procter (Chair) and Beryl Watson
As the majority of Clubs had accepted their new Constitution and By-Laws in 2012-2013, the last 12 months have
been spent assisting the remaining clubs to finalise theirs.
This year, some of the Clubs have, with approval from the CRB, made minor changes to their By-Laws. The CRB has
also made minor changes to the Club By-Laws on the web.
Many emails, phone calls and letters have been received from members asking for advice or assistance with
constitutional or personnel matters.
Some of these are member protection issues, the majority of which are easily resolved but some take careful
negotiation to reach a satisfactory outcome. Many of these incidences often arise because of poor communications
within a Club.
The Member Protection Policy has been revised and is available on the web for Clubs to download so they have a
copy available to members on request.
It is essential that all our bowling members are treated with fairness and respect and all should be aware of their
legal and ethical rights and responsibilities as set out in the Member Protection Policy.
A Generic Domestic Rules document, compiled by the CRB in consultation with other committees, has recently been
placed on the web for Clubs to download as they develop their own Domestic Rules. These Domestic Rules must be
presented to the Members and voted on before they can be implemented.
The Constitution Revision Board acknowledges CEO Nicky and office staff Janine, Selam, Kate, Nicola and Kylie for
your continued support and dedication to the CRB and the Association during the last 12 months, it is much
appreciated.
To all the members who have contacted the CRB with concerns and questions, thank you for allowing the CRB to be
of help to you.

Magazine Committee Barbara Hazeltine (Chair), Jean Clowes, Jackie Lewis, Wendy Steyers, Elizabeth Whelan
Since July, 2013 there have been multiple changes to the magazine - the size, shape, quality of paper, advertising to
name a few. The feedback on the new magazine has been overwhelmingly positive and is great to hear.
In December, 2013, Jean Clowes joined the Committee, which works together to read and edit your articles. This is
all being done now by electronic means. The Magazine Committee still sub-edits and then proofs the journal. A
magazine of this size needs a number of people with disparate talents to produce quality articles.
A number of people are involved with the magazine. Thanks go to President Robyn, Directors and the Committees of
Match, Umpires, Coaching and Social. The magazine would not be published without the help of the office staff, CEO
Nicky and Janine, Kate, Selam and Kylie. Nicola started in the office in August, 2013 and has had so much to do with

the magazine. Since moving to the new publishers, Nicola has worked extremely hard to ensure Bowls Matters is an
item of value. Producing the magazine is a team effort and it has been great to be associated with it for such a
lengthy period.
Bowls Matters would not be the same without the input of the members and Publicity Officers. Your Club does not
have to be a large one to send in an article and all stories are welcomed. Remember, your articles and efforts make
up a substantial part of this magazine and it is up to you all to carry on the good work.
A special thank you to anyone who has over the past 12 months had an article or photo published. It’s a wonderful
feeling to have something in print. Congratulations! If you have not tried before, then 2014/2015 is coming, take a
chance and send in a story.

Regional Representatives hold an important role within the Association as they are in touch with all Districts and
Clubs within their region and provide two way communications between Region and State. This year, the Regional
Reps have met three times. The first meeting, held in October, welcomed new Regional Reps for Region 6 - Robyn
Cosgrove, Region 7 - Margaret Duley, Region 15 - Trish Wilson and Region 16 - Barbara Hazeltine and in February we
were able to welcome Elaine Radcliffe for Region 3. The new Reps are given a full briefing on their roles and
responsibilities and are given advice and assistance in ways of fulfilling their obligations. The meetings are called at
regular intervals to discuss issues that may develop in a particular region and which reps wish to place on the agenda
for general discussion, or matters that need discussion that are relevant to all members of the State.
This year has seen changes in the Pennants and the reps were able to receive updates and information from Pam
Hockings, Chair of Match, into developments in this area. Pam was also available to give guidance to the
implementation of Play or Forfeit Policy for Clubs. The meetings have also given the reps the opportunity to be
briefed by Lesley Swales, Chair of Umpiring, and Kathy Chatillon, Chair of Coaching, regarding officiating and
coaching structures that have been put in place by Bowls Australia.
One of the major discussion points in meetings this year has been the Boundaries Discussion Paper. Robust
discussion was involved around this document with all Regional Reps having the opportunity to discuss possible
impacts within their regions.
The Regional Reps have been instrumental in putting forward problems that they have encountered from their
regions, one of which was the need for further relaxation of the Dress Policy. The accessibility of bowls shops in
areas outside major cities had made it quite difficult for some members to find clothing from bowls shops. This
enabled a relaxation of the code to include suitable smart casual attire, which has been a great help to some regional
Clubs.
The pooling of ideas including certificates and medallions for presentation at regional playoffs has been very
successful and has streamlined the process allowing Regions or Districts (where there is no Regional Rep) to
purchase medallions through Head Office.
The communication channels that have developed through the Regional Rep network have been invaluable in the
smooth running of Regional events and the hard work of these volunteers is much appreciated. We are still looking
for Regional Reps in a few areas so would encourage interested members to contact Head Office with an expression
of interest.

NSW Juniors have again had an impressive year with outstanding results and representative performances.
The NSW v QLD test at Taren Point Bowling Club was the first representative match for the year, with a number of
players making their debut at this event. The team took the series 3 – 0 in both the NSW girls and boys tests, setting
the stage for a successful year.

The NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) Exchange series at Port Macquarie, was the next fixture for the NSW State
Side. With a number of players having been selected for the CHS side, other members of the NSW Under 18 squad
were given an opportunity to represent at State level. The CHS side continued their winning streak taking the 2013
encounter.
Sorrento Bowling Club in Western Australia hosted the 2013 Australian Under 18 Championships. NSW performed
brilliantly in both the boys and girls events, claiming 1st place honours for Boys Champion State, Girls Champion State
and Overall Champion State. The final results were three gold medals, two silver medals and three bronze medals
from the eight disciplines (medalling in every discipline). After the event, NSW players featured prominently in
selection for the Australian Under 18 Squad. These players included: Dawn Hayman (Fairy Meadow), Ellen Ryan
(Goulburn Railway), Jamie-Lee Worsnop (St Johns Park), Corey Wedlock (Urunga) and Dylan Skinner (Mount Lewis).
All of these NSW players then went on to represent their country in the Trans-Tasman series in March 2014.
The Annual City v Country fixture was held at Cabramatta in November and saw the City side continue their success
in the event with a 2-1 series victory over Country. Following the series the 2013 NSW State Squad was announced.

Taren Point Bowling Club hosted the first State Squad training camp in January 2014. Members received on green
coaching plus information on goal setting, etiquette, measuring performance and healthy eating patterns. Directions
for the upcoming year were established at this camp. Squad members then took part in Regional Training Camps at
Foster, Taren Point, Warilla and Orange to further enhance their training.
The 2014 State Squad training program took a change in direction with the NSW Regional Training Camps replacing
the Easter Camp. The regional camps, based in the North, South, East and West of NSW, provided an opportunity for
juniors in the local areas to meet NSW Squad members and gain some valuable tools to develop their skills. Each
camp included squad drills, interviews, one on one coaching and match play. The local juniors who attended each
camp were also involved in the squad drills and then joined in with the state squad to mingle and play matches
together.
The final interstate fixture of the year saw the NSW boys and girls travel to Queanbeyan in May to compete against
the ACT. Both NSW sides which included three debutants across the board performed extremely well and dominated
the series to win 2-0 in both the boys and girls tests.
The development of junior bowls at both participation and elite levels throughout NSW is only possible due to the
continued support and contributions from all the event sponsors, hosts and squad sponsors. A very special thank you

Round 2: NSW v ACT
Our ladies played well and were victorious on three rinks winning 77-38

Again our ladies were victorious with a two rink win 67-49
Round 4: NSW v SA

Bowl for Others Merle McCarthy (President), Gladys Barnes (Secretary), Edna Arnold (Treasurer)
The NSW women bowlers are thanked for their ongoing support of Bowl for Others, with the $1 voluntary
subscription paid to their Clubs. Extra funds are also received from charity days, ‘spiders’, wrong biases and
donations from individual members. The Committee appreciates all the best wishes that are often sent in with the
cheques.
Country Vice-Presidents are thanked for acting on our behalf collecting the annual subscriptions from the Clubs in
their District. Best wishes go to Pat Hardwick (Mid West) and Dulcie Tonkin (Western) who have retired from their
positions after many years.
The Annual Presentation of Cheques luncheon is held annually at the The Masonic Club. A representative from each
of the recipients attends to receive their cheque and speaks on their current research, which is always interesting.
Country members, when hospitalised in Sydney areas, are visited whenever possible and receive phone calls. The Air
Ambulance Service does great work transporting those country bowlers.
After many years of being on the Committee, President Merle McCarthy has not re-nominated for her third term.
Merle has held the positions of Vice-President, Secretary and President and has shown strong leadership at all times.
Merle has had a battle with health problems and will now enjoy her retirement. We wish President Merle happy
days ahead and better health – we will miss you very much.
We thank State President Robyn Procter, the Directors of WBNSW and CEO Nicky Bethwaite and her staff for their
courteous assistance at all times.

Finance Portfolio Anne Emms
It gives me pleasure to report that the financial year ended with an overall net profit of $115,626, this represents an
increased current year surplus of approximately 5.3 per cent. It has been another challenging year on the financial
front with low interest rates for invested funds and a continual slow drop in membership, with a resulting reduction
in overall income. Given the uncertain financial climate we have continued to maintain a conservative approach to
investment of Association funds but we are continually evaluating that situation and review our investments each
Board meeting.
We received surplus revenue to budget for our events of $11,803, or 9.5 per cent. This indicates that our budgeting
strategies were quite accurate and represents the results of a great deal of effort by our match and events
committees to stage successful events around the state. This will also help to increase the profile of the sport and it
is something that the Association wishes to remain focussed on into the future.
The financial constraints on economic activity are still unpredictable and we must maintain tight control of the
Association’s funds to meet budget expectations and keep the sport viable. Alongside prudent financial
management, the focus still remains on increasing membership. We have increased diligence on financial control by
putting in place a policy framework, including financial control policies and risk management criteria around financial
activities. This will ensure that the governance of our finances meets all regulatory requirements, that financial
control is rigorous and that there is a succession plan for future directors who are tasked with the financial
management of the Association.
I wish to thank Janine Kerr, our Finance Manager, for making my new role as Finance Director one that is well
resourced. Janine is always willing and able to meet the challenges in keeping our books in order, she has responded
with enthusiasm to any suggestions for change I have made and has put forward ideas for improvement of our
financial control systems. Likewise, Nicky has been very involved in providing suggestions for investing and managing
our funds and is always on the lookout for ways to improve our cash flow. I would also like to thank all our other
staff members for their cheery reception each time I come into the office and their willingness to help out wherever
possible.
In conclusion I would like to also thank our auditors, Pringle Moriarty & Co., for their help and support throughout
the year. We present the audited financial statements to the Association for the year ended 30 June 2014.

c. Property, Plant and Equipment Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less, where applicable, any
accumulated depreciation and impairment losses.
Property
Strata title land and buildings are shown at their fair value (being the amount for which an asset could be exchanged
between knowledgeable willing parties in an arm’s length transaction), based on periodic, but at least triennial,
valuations by external independent valuers, less subsequent depreciation for buildings.
Increases in the carrying amount arising on revaluation of land and buildings are credited to a revaluation surplus in
equity. Decreases that offset previous increases of the same asset are charged against fair value reserves directly in
equity; all other decreases are recognised in profit or loss
Any accumulated depreciation at the date of revaluation is eliminated against the gross carrying amount of the asset
and the net amount is restated to the revalued amount of the asset.
Plant and equipment
Plant and equipment are measured on the cost basis and are therefore carried at cost less depreciation and
impairment losses. In the event the carrying amount of plant and equipment is greater than the estimated
recoverable amount, the carrying amount is written down immediately to the estimated recoverable amount. A
formal assessment of recoverable amount is made when impairment indicators are present. No impairment loss has
been recorded in the current financial year.
Depreciation
The depreciable amount of all fixed assets, including building, is depreciated on a straight line basis over the asset’s
useful life commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.
The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable asset are:
Class of Fixed Asset Depreciation Rate
Building 3%
Office furniture and equipment 20% - 33%
The assets’ residual values and useful lives are reviewed and adjusted, if appropriate, at each reporting period.
Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount. These gains and
losses are included in the statement of comprehensive income. When revalued assets are sold, amounts included in
the revaluation relating to that asset are transferred to retained earnings.

NOTE 1 – STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (CONT’D)
d. Financial Instruments
Initial Recognition and Measurement Financial assets and financial liabilities are recognised when the Association becomes a party to the contractual provisions to the instrument. For financial assets, this is equivalent to the date that the Association commits itself to either purchase or sell the asset (ie trade date accounting is adopted).
Financial instruments are initially measured at fair value plus transactions costs where the instrument is not classified ‘at fair value through profit or loss’, in which case transaction costs are expensed to profit or loss immediately.
Classification and Subsequent Measurement Financial instruments are subsequently measured at either fair value or cost.
(i) Financial assets at fair value through profit or loss Financial assets are classified at ‘fair value through profit or loss’ when they are held for trading for the
purpose of short term profit taking. Such assets are subsequently measured at fair value with changes in
fair value (ie gains or losses) being recognised in profit or loss. The Association has not held any financial
asset at fair value through profit or loss in the current or comparative year.
(ii) Held-to-maturity investments Held-to-maturity investments are non-derivative financial assets that have fixed maturities and fixed or
determinable payments, and it is the Association’s intention to hold these investments to maturity. They
are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest rate method.
(iii) Available-for-sale financial assets Available-for-sale financial assets are non-derivative financial assets that are either not capable of being classified into other categories of financial assets due to their nature, or are designated as such by management. They comprise investments in the equity of other entities where there is neither a fixed maturity nor fixed or determinable payments.
(iv) Financial Liabilities
Non-derivative financial liabilities (excluding financial guarantees) are subsequently measured at amortised cost.

d. Financial Instruments (Cont’d)
Impairment
At the end of each reporting period, the Association assesses whether there is objective evidence that a financial
instrument has been impaired. In the case of available-for-sale financial instruments, a prolonged decline in the
value of the instrument is considered to determine whether impairment has arisen. Impairment losses are
immediately recognised in profit or loss. Also, any cumulative decline in fair value previously recognised in other
comprehensive income is reclassified to profit or loss at this point.
Derecognition
Financial assets are derecognised where the contractual rights to receipt of cash flows expires or the asset is
transferred to another party, whereby the Association no longer has any significant continuing involvement in the
risks and benefits associated with the asset. Financial liabilities are derecognised where the related obligations are
either discharged, cancelled or expire. The difference between the carrying value of the financial liability
extinguished or transferred to another party and the fair value of consideration paid, including the transfer of non-
cash assets or liabilities assumed, is recognised in profit of loss.
e. Employee Benefits Provision is made for the Association’s liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by
employees to the end of the reporting period. Employee benefits expected to be settled within one year have
been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled. Employee benefits payable
later than one year have been measured at the present value of the estimated future cash outflows to be made
for those benefits. These cash flows are discounted using market yields on national government bonds with terms
to maturity that match the expected timing of cash flows.
f. Cash and Cash Equivalents Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at-call with banks and other short-term highly
liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less.

g. Revenue and Other Income
Revenue from the sale of goods is recognised at the point of delivery as this corresponds to the transfer of significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods and the cessation of all involvement in those goods. Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest rate method, which, for floating rate financial assets is the
rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been
established.
Revenue from the provision of membership subscriptions is recognised on a receipts basis for the financial year to
which it relates.
All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).
h. Goods and Services Tax (GST)
Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Tax Office (ATO). Receivables and payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GST receivable or payable. The net amount of GST receivable from, or payable to, the ATO is included with other receivables or payables in the statement of financial position. Cash flows are presented in the cash flow statement on a gross basis. The GST components of cash flows arising from investing or financing activities, which are recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO are presented as operating cash flows included in receipts from customers or payments to suppliers.
i. Comparative Figures
When required by Accounting Standards, comparative figures have been adjusted to conform to changes in
presentation for the current financial year.
j. Accounts Payable and Other Payables
Accounts payable and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for
goods and services received by the company during the reporting period which remain unpaid. The balance is
recognised as a current liability with the amounts normally paid within 30 days of recognition of the liability.

k. Key Estimates
Impairment
The Association assesses impairment at the end of each reporting period by evaluation of conditions and events specific
to the Association that may be indicative of impairment triggers. Recoverable amounts of relevant assets are reassessed
using value-in-use calculations which incorporate various key assumptions.

Financial Risk Management Policies The Association's finance director is responsible for, amongst other issues, monitoring and managing
financial risk exposures of the Association. The finance director’s overall risk management strategy seeks to ensure the Association meets its financial targets, whilst minimising potential adverse effects of cash flow shortfalls.
(a) Credit Risk The maximum exposure to credit risk, excluding the value of any collateral or other security, at balance
date to recognised financial assets is the carrying amount, net of any provisions for doubtful debts, as disclosed in the statement of financial position and notes to the financial statements. The Association does not have any material credit risk exposure to any single debtor or group of debtors under financial instruments entered into by the Association.
(b) Net Fair Values Methods and assumptions used in determining net fair value.
The net fair values of assets and liabilities approximates their carrying value. No financial assets and financial liabilities are readily traded on organised markets in standardised form. Financial assets where carrying amount exceeds net fair values have been written down to the net fair value. The aggregate net fair values and carrying amounts of financial assets and liabilities are disclosed in the statement of financial position in these notes.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial

as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.
