MISSIONThe mission of the Sarah A. Reed Children’s Center is to promote the emotional well-being of children and families, helping them to realize their potential and experience success.
THE SEVEN COMMITMENTSOF SANCTUARY®
• Nonviolence• Emotional Intelligence• Social Learning• Shared Governance• Open Communication• Social Responsibility• Growth and Change
MESSAGE TO OUR STAKEHOLDERSParents and children are drawn to the Sarah Reed Children’s Center as a destination to find help in dealing with the effects of mental illness brought on by repeated trauma. Our devotion to rigorous and effective treatment methods and a dedicated staff have been the formula of our success over the last 144 years.
Through our collective work and commitment to the children and families we serve and our pursuit of new programs and treatment strategies, we renew the Sarah Reed Children’s Center every day. However, creating and renewing this environment also requires continuous attention to infrastructure. Around our residential and our newly acquired Hamilton Campus you can see visible signs of our investment in safe facilities that supports the remarkable work of our staff. We have made it a priority to continue to raise funds and make significant investments in our facilities, which enriches our community and helps recruit and retain outstanding staff. Likewise, in the coming year we will continue to expand our use of Evidence Based Treatment Methods, similar to parent child interactive therapy which we piloted this past year. None of this would be possible without the vision and generosity of the Sarah Reed Board of Directors, staff and our friends, who have devoted their valuable time and resources each year to help us fulfill our mission. To that end, we look forward to the future with hope and inspiration.

WHAT IS THE SARAH REED CHILDREN’S CENTER?Over a century ago, Miss Sarah Reed was asked to tell what
“The Erie Home for the Friendless” (the original name of
the Children’s Center) did and its value to the community.
She eloquently responded, “It is easy to estimate the
value of property and tell of the thoroughly organized
institution that has grown out of a venture of faith. But
who can estimate the good it has done or follow the far
reaching influences? Volumes would not tell the story of all
the lives that it has helped.”
Over a hundred years later, countless committee hours
and strategic planning processes, we repeatedly have been
tasked to answer this same question. “What is the Sarah Reed
Children’s Center and its value to the community?” But today
the answer has to be refined and condensed into an elevator
speech, a thirty second television ad or a conversational hook
to grab someone’s attention or interest. However, it is in that
task or expectation that the real answer is overlooked. For as
Miss Reed said above, the true measure of our value is not the
value of our property or our institution but in the stories of lives
helped or saved. It is a collection of stories created by scenes and
acts of kindness and compassion that play out every day at the Children’s Center. Acts of caring and
kindness can be measured in the moment but their true value is realized over a lifetime.
A nine year old boy in our Residential Treatment campus demands to go to his classroom, despite
repeated requests from staff to lower his voice and cease his profanities. When he is denied his request
he explodes with a profane and vulgar tirade directed at his caregivers. Threatening violence, inviting it
and reaffirming his non-compliance repeatedly and mockingly, yet our staff remain steadfast and calm,
encouraging him to make thoughtful and wise choices to resolve his anguish and anger. The staff
works as a team, well trained, adaptive, wise and thoughtful; their efforts are eventually rewarded by a
calmed young man offering his hand to be walked to a reset for his day. The change is dramatic but
is it a life lesson learned and a permanent change, one can only hope. Again, that measurement must
be taken over a lifetime and not in the moment. Yet, among the far reaching influences is witnessing
this act and being filled with pride and reassured that these staff; Mr. Mike,
Miss Brenda and Mr. Glenn, are as amazing and altruistic as our founder.
A teenage girl disrupts her class by tipping over her desk and walking out in the middle of a lesson. As
she passes an administrator, Mr. Rick, in the school hallway, she pushes him out of her way and slaps
the mail and folders from his hand to the floor. Her teacher, Miss Keri, explains that she has been on
edge all week in advance of a discharge to her new adoptive family on Saturday. Later that day there is
a knock on Mr. Rick’s office door and the girl enters with her teacher to apologize for her outburst. She
hands him a note explaining that was not the real her and that she hopes that he will remember her for
all that she accomplished while at Sarah Reed. He reassures her that he completely understood and
had already forgiven her. She asks if it would be alright if she gave him a hug since she might not see
him on Saturday. The following Monday, her teacher and Mr. Rick talked in the hallway about what a
great girl she was and that her leaving was like their own child moving away. As they shared a cup of
coffee, Mr. Rick reminded Miss Keri what an amazing teacher and
role model she was for that young lady. For that young lady, Miss
Keri will be a teacher that she will remember for the rest of her life.
A 12 year old girl was admitted to our Residential Program, she wore
black clothes and black make-up. At her admission physical, her
nurse, Miss Char, noticed that she wore a piece of white adhesive
tape on her front bottom teeth because she was teased and embarrassed that her teeth did not come
together. The girl explained that her dad could not afford to take her to the dentist since he lost his
job and custody of her after being hospitalized for a car accident that took the life of her mother and
sister. Miss Char began to search for a local dentist that might be able help her, since Medicare’s
solution to her problem was full extraction and dentures. A local dentist, Dr. Bill,
stepped forward. He examined her, took x-rays and told her what they
were going to do to fix her bite and smile. He enlisted a few
colleagues, a local oral surgeon and orthodontist, who also
donated their time pro bono. During her treatment, Dr. Bill would
bring in hand me down clothing and books from his daughters for
her. When her father recovered and picked up his smiling daughter,
he barely recognized her. They drove to Erie every weekend for the
next three months until her braces were removed. She and her father
returned a year later, to thank nurse Char with flowers and Dr. Bill with
a note that still hangs in his office.
That is what the Sarah Reed
Children’s Center is along with
volumes of stories that have influenced
countless lives for over 143 years.

this act and being filled with pride and reassured that these staff; Mr. Mike,
LOSSMany in the family of employees of the Sarah Reed Children’s Center experienced the death of a friend
or family member over the past year. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to all who are
grieving and reckoning with their loss.
The Children’s Center experienced the loss of a significant family member this past year. “Grandma”
Caroline Kensill died at the age of 95 in December of last year. Grandma Caroline, as she was known
to everyone at the Children’s Center, was the modern day embodiment of Miss Sarah Reed. She began
as a volunteer at Sarah Reed in 1986 and became the foster grandparent for the Gifford Residential
Cottage. She was grandma to everyone in the cottage including staff. She often worked with children
who were struggling with socialization or missing their homes and families. She worked with small
groups of children to teach knitting, crocheting and crafts. She was a gentle, kind and loving mentor
but firm and direct when needed. She taught lessons from her rocking chair and had a calming and
peaceful effect on everyone around her, making the cottage seem like home for everyone. She created
her version of a stress ball, a knitted “softy ball” that was filled with cotton that children could throw at
walls or each other without any chance of injury or harm. She knitted blankets for staff members who
had babies or “new additions to families”. She was a proud, dedicated and valuable team member
who looked forward to working with children daily. She received many awards as a volunteer and
foster grandparent during her career but preferred the quiet role of mother and grandma most of all.
FUTUREThroughout the history of the Children’s Center,
we have recognized that working through loss is
vital to building a better future. The future of our
Residential Treatment Program was made brighter
by the community support we received during our
“Sanctuary for the Future” campaign. The “Susan
Hirt Hagan Hall” was dedicated this year to thank
Tom and Susan Hagan for their generous commitment
to building a brighter future and for joining a Legacy
of Caring that is synonymous with the Sarah Reed
Children’s Center.
