annual report 2013-2014
Dear Light House Friends,
Light House Studio is celebrating its 16th year. Last year we added a second teaching studio space and filled 687 slots in 55 exciting workshops and projects. I am proud to report on our innovative programming and new collaborations with organizations and schools such as
the Neurology Department at the University of Virginia, Center for Nonprofit Excellence, TEDx Charlottesville, the Renaissance School, Elk Hill, and Albemarle High School’s English for Speakers of Other Languages program. Our many partnerships, along with new programming such as our Visual Effects workshops, ensure that we are responding to our students’ ever-expanding interests while remaining at the forefront of our community’s needs.
In addition to our local work, Light House student films compete on a national level, raising Charlottesville’s profile. Last year’s films have been accepted to eleven festivals across the United States, winning awards such as “Best Documentary” and “Best Music Video.” Students who were accepted to the Los Angeles Future Filmmakers Showcase and attended the screening to share their work report that attendees ask about Light House and Charlottesville.
In this Report you will find financial and demographic information, a list of donors (thank you), and numerous ways that we measure success. Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about success. Our Annual Report cites numbers from 2013-2014, but it is our growth over the past three to five years that really demonstrates how far we have come. Light
House has seen a 100% increase in workshops and students; 100% growth in collaborations; and a net 100% increase in our operating budget. Our student films are more solid in storytelling and technical accuracy than ever before. Students made over 150 short films last year. If we were to edit all of this work together, it would take eight hours to view it all. In other words, Light House students produced the equivalent of four feature films last year.
I recently sat on a panel addressing the impact of the arts on our economy and community. An audience member asked, “From your current position, what has been your most meaningful moment?” I first thought about Light House’s growth. While measurements are important, there was no “ah-ha” moment. Then I remembered an email that I had received that week. It came from a student who had taken Light House classes over the previous four years and was applying to colleges. He told me, “I don’t know where I’d be without all the people at Light House.” Reflecting on our organization makes me aware of our impressive numbers, but it’s the individual lives we touch that truly mean something.
On behalf of our students, mentors, staff, and board, thank you for taking the time to read about our organization and for supporting our mission.
All My Best,
Deanna GouldExecutive Director

After attending a Light House workshop, students report an increased ability to turn their ideas into a finished product, to plan and organize, and to work collaboratively with peers. Parents report a noticeable increase in their children’s self-esteem and ability to express themselves through story.
“Under Light House mentorship, my son transitioned from, ‘I want to learn about that art form,’ to, ‘I am that artist!’ His confidence in his creativity has grown by leaps and bounds. It’s just one of the best educational resources in Charlottesville.”~Sandy, Parent of Light House Student
“My favorite part of the lighthouse experience is meeting new people and immersing myself in a professional filmmaking environment. Making the film is only half the fun; the other half is building friendships with mentors and peers that will last a lifetime.”~Sam, Light House Student
“Many thanks for all the entire Light House team does for teens in this area. Since schools do not generally offer courses in film production or analysis, what our daughter learns at Light House is invaluable to her. The resources and guidance at Light House allow her to pursue an endeavor that truly ignites her spirit and gives her incredible enjoyment.” ~Kara and Jim, Parents of Light House Student
“Light House Studio is a place where I can go to be creative, and work with other people who share my passion. It’s a place where I can make my own ideas come to life and express myself through film. It’s a film school, but for middle and high schoolers.”~Ryan, Light House Student
