Literacy & Evangelism
Annual Report 2013
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: SID RICE
Dear Ministry Partners,
God’s “word is a lamp that gives light wherever
I walk”. Psalm 119:105 (CEV)
Th e mission of Literacy and Evangelism
International, equipping the Church to share
the message of Christ, is also our vision for the
future. Fifty years from now we envision the
Church equipped and sharing the message of
Jesus Christ through the gift of reading.
Th e Word that illuminates the path for all creation is being released
through literacy ministries around the world. Last year, 2012, brought
light, through the creation of a new Russian primer (basic reader), for
the Russian people in Northern Mongolia.
Initial primer construction in the Bhojpuri
language will bring the hope of the Good
News to over a million Bhojpuri speakers
in Northern India. Th is past year, in the
Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa, the
path of over 5,000 new readers was illuminated in this life and for
eternity. God is using the worldwide Church to proclaim the message
of the love of Jesus Christ through Bible-based literacy.
Literacy and Evangelism is equipping the Church for its task of
making disciples of all nations. Th e light of God’s Word is being
released. Lives are being transformed. Th e path ahead is illuminated.
As you read this Annual Report, please pray for literacy missionaries
around the globe who are sharing the transforming message of Th e
Word who is the lamp that gives light wherever we walk. May those
walking in darkness see the light of salvation in Jesus Christ.
Your brother in Christ,

SIERRA LEONE LITERACY PROJECT
BHOJPURI PRIMER CONSTRUCTION PROJECT
T h e Bh o j p u r i N e w Testament was inaugurated and circulated in 2005. Th is year, LEI consultants Tedd Lodes, M.K. Bharti, Chrystella Wälchli, and Gyan Mochary (leader) gathered with a team of local believers to develop a Bhojpuri literacy primer
so the people of Bihar could learn to read the Bibles that were translated into their language eight years earlier. “Only about 20% of the believers in our network of house churches can read and write,” remarks LEI missionary M.K. Bharti. Th ese people cannot enjoy the blessing that we enjoy of reading God’s word for themselves. Pastor Bharti says, “We will use literacy as a tool to reach those villages that are resistant to the Gospel, and we will use it among all of our house churches so that the believers can read the Bible and grow in their faith.”
With the Mende and Th emne primers complete, preparations are underway to take the next step of the Sierra Leone Literacy Project -- Krio Primer Construction. Th e population of Krio speakers in Sierra Leone (1993 statistics) numbers 473,000 according to Ethnologue.com*. Krio is used “more in provincial towns than villages, and for inter-ethnic communication.” It is the “formal language for those who do not speak English.”* Th e New Testament was fi rst published in 1986. Th is past year, an indigenous fi ve-member Board of Trustees was established for LEI-Sierra Leone. Fifty-three national teachers have been trained to start classes with the primers already created.

2013 Annual Report 9
Dr. Nancy Sue Laminack and Rev. Don Edic, English Language Ministry (ELM) Curriculum Development Director, have worked on LEI’s English Language Materials to make them even more eff ective.
Nancy Sue completed a revision of Passport to the World of English (PWE), Books 1-3 and the teacher’s guides. An audio recording for the new Book 1 is also available. We celebrate this revision of PWE and all Nancy Sue has done to enhance our English Language Ministry.
Don completed a new English language curriculum, entitled Using Everyday English (UEE). Following the same format as Passport to the World of English (PWE), UEE is a simple English-as-a-Second-Language curriculum, but is designed for those learning to speak English in a non-English-speaking culture. Books 1, 2, and 3 focus on the present, past, and future tenses of verbs, respectively.

Pastor Nzongo Sila-Ndunda reports that literacy continues to light up DR Congo with over 5,000 new readers. North Angola reports 157 new readers as well. Th is is an example of how those making use of Bible-based literacy and the Word of God shed light in needed places.
Sila focused on Bandundu where the largest concentration of Pygmies lives. A Pygmy evangelist and literacy trainer has taken over the training of teachers and church planting. He is assisted by two Bantu trainers from the north of Bandundu. A total of 103 teachers has been trained and 32 literacy classes started. Th ere are 64 classes in both South Equateru and North Bandundu. Nine of these literacy centers receive people for prayer on Sunday evenings, and are on their way to becoming churches. Th ese will be added to the many churches already planted in those provinces through Sila’s literacy programs.
