Annual Report 2013
PrefaceThe year 2013 was the first year in which Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, worked hard on the performance agreements it had agreed on with the Minister of Education, Culture and Science at the end of 2012. We managed to turn these agreements into performance indicators which provide insight into the extent to which we will actually be able to achieve these performance agreements. This annual report will briefly discuss these results so far. In the past year, we have taken major steps towards achieving the performance agreements.
In the same year, the Minister decided to provide funding for the European Master of Renewable Energy, the Sensor System Engineering Master programme and the Master of Music of the Prince Claus Conservatoire. Our centres of expertise in the focal points of Energy and Healthy Ageing were also off to a good start. The Review Committee gave them a positive review in 2013 and reported the results to the Minister. With the centres of expertise, we want to establish a connection between education and applied research on the one hand and institutions and companies in the north of the Netherlands on the other.
1
Through the Centre for Valorisation and Entrepreneurship, almost 300 students started working as independent entrepreneurs. In addition to the emphasis on entrepreneurship, we focus on excellence, a theme that is very important to us: over 6% of our students take part in one or more talent programmes. In 2013, our university passed the institutional accreditation test. This quality mark shows that the internal quality assurance process and the commitment to the quality of the degree programmes were reviewed as positive by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). And in conclusion: in 2013, Hanze UAS celebrated its 215th anniversary. We celebrated this joyous occasion by means of a fundraising campaign for a campus in Kenya, where doctors and nurses will be trained. This campaign yielded a total sum of €101,000.
“fundraising campaign yielded a total sum of €101,000”
These are good results that fill us with great pride. We would like to thank all lecturers, other employees, the Participation Council and all others for everything they did in 2013 for our students, our education and research and for companies and institutes in our region.

Strategic themes Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen focuses on the strategic themes Energy and Healthy Ageing which fit in perfectly with the other strategic themes pursued in the north of the Netherlands. Hanze UAS cooperates closely with companies, organisations, government bodies and other regional knowledge institutes in these areas. In 2013, Hanze UAS established a centre of expertise for both focal areas. In addition, Hanze UAS focuses strongly on entrepreneurship, both in education and in applied research and on updating and maintaining expertise in the business world and in the workforce in the north of the Netherlands. Talent development has become an increasingly important focus.
5
6
EnergyEnergy is what keeps our society going, but traditional sources of energy are slowly depleting. Hanze UAS conducts research into new and sustainable energy solutions. This takes place in the Centre of Expertise Energy and at EnTranCe, the energy testing ground. Naturally, we also train tomorrow’s energy professionals, e.g. with the European Master of Renewable Energy at the Energy Academy Europe (EAE).
7
Smart energy storage makes sustainability affordableSun and wind are not always readily available in equal amounts. In order to make optimum use of these sustainable energy sources, we have to store them. But that is not as easy as it sounds.
Strategic theme: Energy
Countries with large differences in altitude solve this problem by filling up the reservoirs when energy prices are low and by opening up the reservoirs when there is an energy shortage on the market. So, how can a flat country like the Netherlands store energy smartly? It is one of the puzzles Wouter Swart Ranshuysen is solving. Swart Ranshuysen, lecturer and researcher at the Centre of Applied Research Energy is working on a surprising solution at micro level. Together with students of the scientific European Master of Renewable Energy, he is developing a system in which a refrigerator motor only starts once a day, preferably at the moment when there is sufficient sustainable energy available.
8
A simple water tank“You just have to apply the laws of physics,” says Swart Ranshuysen. “Thawing ice takes a lot of heat away from its environment. If ice thaws in a refrigerator, its motor starts less often to cool it. I am developing a thermal buffer, or ice battery, which can communicate smartly with the electricity grid. The pivotal point is to find out within which space of time the refrigerator needs power from the grid for cooling. If the margin is big enough, it is able to pick the best time.” Swart Ranshuysen is developing a thermal buffer, or ice battery, which can communicate smartly with the electricity grid. Little research is being conducted into these types of applications. “A simple water tank, how could you make money with that? And yet, it is a much cheaper solution to store energy than an electric battery, plus it is better for the environment.”
“You just have to apply the laws of physics” 9
10
Healthy AgeingHow can we stay in good health much longer, and how can we organise society in a way that health care is accessible to everyone? Finding an answer to this question is of major importance in our ageing society. At all our schools, in all degree programmes and Centres of Applied Research, people are working hard on solving this problem, from highly diverse angles. Hanze UAS also mobilises companies, institutes and other knowledge institutes to collaborate on innovation in so-called ‘Living Labs’ at the Center of Expertise Healthy Ageing.
11
The linking pins of health care
Strategic theme: Healthy Ageing
“Nurses are independent professionals with their own responsibilities: that is what I want nurses, doctors, health care managers and everyone else in society to under-stand. ‘Assert your independence and do not hide behind others, is what I tell the profession’,” says Petrie Roodbol, professor in Nursing Innovation and Positioning. She is not just concerned about the profession, but mostly about the patient’s quality of life. “Nurses are the linchpins of health care when it comes to a speedy recovery.”
“Nursing is about the question of what I can do to make sure that my patient is able to live independently and get back to normal life.” That entails much more than the main medical domain, which focuses on disease, and not on health. Nurses are responsible for monitoring the overall picture of the patient, that is their contribution to Healthy Ageing. This is her main argument for among professionals and she informs first year students of Nursing about this in her lectures about the profiling of the subject. “Florence Nightingale did not see nurses as doctors’ servants. But nurses have been seen as a
12
“Nurses aren’t doctor’s servants”
doctor’s assistant for a very long time, and that is what we still see glimpses of on the shopfloor.”
Research strengthens the professionResearch into nurses’ interventions can help to embed the uniqueness of the profession,” says Roodbol. Among other things, she is leading a research theme in the consequences of disease. “A patient may no longer be sick after a transplant, but if he is struggling with post-traumatic stress, he is not ready to get back to his life, and neither are his partner or children. Being healthy is more than not being sick. The nursing domain is about promoting how to be healthy.

14
Excellence Talent has to be developed. Hanze UAS has been working with determination at this for a few years now. In 2013, over 6% of our students participated in special programmes for talented students. Hanze UAS has chosen to focus on talent, because it promotes a more ambitious study culture, from which all students will eventually reap the benefits.
15
Talent development with childrenAs a teacher or educational employee, you should not just look for the right answer, but let children think about why things are the way they are, says Linda Tijsma. In 2013, she graduated from the School of Education, as a talented student herself. “How does a child develop a thought? You have to listen to see the talent moments and to make the most of them.”
During her studies, Linda wanted more than just acquire knowledge. She also wanted to discover ‘why things are the way they are’. In the Talent Strength excellence programme, she conducted research and developed a programme that teaches teachers and assistants to ask questions to pupils in a different way. “A three-year old is always asking why. Around the age of six or seven, children start doing calculus, spelling and language, and their curiosity fades. What Talent Strength is actually saying is: hold on to that curiosity and expand it. You can do that by offering material that challenges children to make them think. And also by asking the right questions.”
Strategic theme: Excellence
16
“Hold on to that curiosity”
ListeningLinda uses her knowledge about inciting talent in teaching material that she is developing at the Groningen University Museum, and as a counsellor of students at the School of Education who are conducting research. She also occasionally works as a substitute teacher in a primary school to stay in touch with daily practice. What does Talent Strength offer her? “When I am in front of a class, I am better able to interpret the curiosity of children. I know that I should not only be looking for the right answer, but that I should stimulate children by continuing to ask them questions. You just have to learn how to deal with the silences.”
17
18
Entre preneurship Entrepreneurship converts new knowledge into economic and social value (valorisation). Hanze UAS considers it an important task to develop and support both the entrepreneurial attitude of students and the road to entrepreneurship.
19
Twenty employees in only one year’s timeStart-up company Enie.nl sells solar panels and green electricity. “We are a small and sustainable energy company,” says founder Patrick van der Meulen. “If you cannot install enough solar panels to produce the amount of energy that is required for a house, the home owner can buy the remaining amount of green electricity from us.”
Patrick van der Meulen, born in Leeuwarden, graduated in Marketing from Hanze UAS in 2013. He is one of the growing numbers of students to start entrepreneurship while studying. “At some point, I became fascinated by sustainable energy and innovation. I want to make a difference in the lives of as many consumers as possible.” During the Da Vinci Honours Minor Van der Meulen and a fellow-student were responsible for introducing Mia, the French electrical car, on the Dutch market. “It turned out that it was still a bit too soon for that. The market was too small.”
New concepts“Entrepreneurship is a process with ups and downs.” At a trade show in Brussels, he ran into a Spanish manufacturer
Strategic theme: Entrepreneurship

of solar panels. “We claimed that we could sell a couple of thousand solar panels in the Netherlands. And we managed to obtain the exclusive rights.” However, the Spaniard did not get his distribution channel in order and Enie.nl was forced to terminate the collaboration. Enie.nl is back on track now, this time with a Slovenian supplier of solar panels. Van der Meulen’s regular place of business is Cube050, the business incubator in Groningen for students and alumni who have started a company. Entrepreneurship with and among other entrepreneurs: “It is an ideal place. We are close by the knowledge institutes, EnTranCe and the Energy Academy, so we are on top of the latest innovations and expertise. It is our dream to continuously develop and market new concepts.”
