PRESIDENT’S REPORT

2014/15 has been another challenging but successful year for the Box Hill Athletic Club. We again won our share of team premierships and our members took out many individual titles. Joel Pocklington, Chris Hamer and Nikki Chapple were selected to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (unfortunately Chris and Nikki were unable to take their place in the team). Georgia Griffith, Courtney Powell, David Thomson, Tayla-Paige Billington and Nathan Brill all represented Australia at the World Junior Championships in the USA. Courtney Powell also represented Australia at the World Cross Country Championships. Box Hill proved itself to be Victoria’s most successful distance running club, winning four XCR’14 (Cross Country and Road Running) premierships, including the Men’s Division 1 title, while we finished 2nd in the Women’s Division 1 competition. Summer competition proved to be challenging, with Athletics Victoria introducing many changes to the competition format, making it a confusing exercise for many competitors, especially those new to the Club. Despite this, seven of our eight teams qualified for the Shield Finals, winning one premiership and gaining four second placings. Last year saw a pleasing increase in membership (up to 228 members), and this year saw a more modest jump in membership as it increased to 233. This continued increase in membership is due to many factors, including the hard work of our talented coaches, a continuing strong relationship with the Box Hill Little Athletics Centre and the efforts of our Club committee. Thanks to Steve Dinneen, Michael Seton, David Hamer, Natalia Kremenchutskaya, Brodie Cross, Bill Dyer, Jack Hill, Pia Hunter, Barbara Johnson, Steve Kelly, Graeme Olden, Angela Robbie, Roslyn Russell and Cameron Sherry for their contribution to the running of the Club through the committee this year. The contribution of two committee members deserves special mention. David Hamer has left Australia to take up a job in Nepal after several years serving the Club as Treasurer. We wish him all the best. Barbara Johnson was the administrative backbone of the Club during her six years as Secretary. She stepped down last year, but when the new Secretary could not continue in the role due to personal circumstances, Barbara again took over this important job. Michael Seton has now volunteered to act as the Club Secretary, but Barbara continues to make a vital contribution as a member of the committee. Off the track there are four important events on the annual Box Hill Athletic Club calendar. The Club 5km handicap acts as a get-together for our distance runners and signifies the start of the winter season. The season launch is partly an information session and partly a “get to know you” exercise prior to the first round of summer shield competition. The annual Box Hill Trivia Night is the biggest social and fund raising event of the year and the Presentation Night is a chance to celebrate the Club’s achievements. All of these events were again successfully held this year as well as an enjoyable Movie Night organized to help raise funds for our international competitors. Sadly this past year saw the passing of two life members who both made a tremendous contribution to the club over many years. Joan Hines was a founding member of the Box Hill Women’s Athletic Club in 1953. She contributed to the Club in many ways over the years and had been an Athletics Victoria official and a member of the venue committee. Her interest and enthusiasm for the Club and for athletics in general never waned. She will be sadly missed.

Merv Blundy, a true gentleman, passed away in January 2015. Back in 2000, Merv was honoured with an Athletics Victoria Merit Award for his many years of service to Athletics Victoria and to Box Hill. Merv served on many AV committees, in particular the winter competition committee. Merv has also served on the committee of the Box Hill Athletic Club for many years, including stints as President and Vice-President. He acted as a team manager and supported the Club in many ways. Despite these sad losses, the 2014/15 athletic year was another year of success and growth for the Box Hill Athletic Club and we look forward to further success in the future.

Summer Report 2014/15 Track and Field Season

Shield Competition 2014/15 was another successful track and field season for Box Hill. It was very nearly our most successful interclub shield season in years, but unfortunately we fell agonizingly short in several divisions of competition. Box Hill had eight teams competing in shield competition this year, Men’s and Women’s Division1, Men’s and Women’s 40+, Men’s and Women’s Under 18 and Men’s and Women’s Under 16. Of these eight teams seven made it through to the shield finals. Of these seven teams five of them finished in the top two in the finals, but only our Women’s 40+ team were able to pull off a premiership. Congratulations to Talitha Crawford, Karen Carah, Amanda Harper, Pia Hunter, Simone Lovass, Deb Dyer, Kerry Putt and Sharron Meager who all put in great performances to win the Athletics Victoria Women’s 40+ shield premiership. It was a great team effort throughout the whole season, with everyone covering multiple events and then putting in some wonderful performances in the final to take out the team title. Congratulations also to our Men’s and Women’s Division 1 teams who both finished 2nd and also to the Men’s 40+ and Women’s Under 18 teams who also finished 2nd. There were many outstanding performances in the shield finals, with many athletes giving their all in multiple events over what was a very long day of competition. Hopefully next year, the teams that just missed out this time can go one step better. International Representatives This was a great year for Box Hill athletes competing overseas. Joel Pocklington represented Australia with honour at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, finishing 7th in the Pole Vault. Joel also finished 7th representing the Asia-Pacific in the Continental Cup in Marrakech. It was exciting to see five Box Hill athletes selected to represent Australia at the World Junior Championships in the USA. Georgia Griffith put in a wonderful performance to finish 4th in the 800m, Courtney Powell was 7th in the 5000m, Nathan Brill finished 17th in the 10,000m Walk, Tayla-Paige Billington was 18th in the 10,000m Walk and David Thomson finished 25th in the Decathlon. Phoebe Sloane won the Women's Under 20 Discus event at the Oceania Area Championships in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Phoebe threw 43.43m in torrential rain (the competition was nearly called off!). Finally, Matthew Harcourt and Nana Owusu-Afriyie, two of our top Under 18 athletes, have been selected to represent Australia. Matt Harcourt will compete in the Oceania Championships in Cairns in May 2015 while Nana has been selected to run in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa in September 2015. Australian Open Championships Unusually, Box Hill athletes failed to win a medal in the national open championships, with Flavien Basson (4th in Pole Vault), Will Potter (7th in 3,000m Steeple) and Natalia Kremenchutskaya (7th in Triple Jump) being our best performed athletes.

Winter report: XCR’14 Cross Country and Road Racing

Box Hill continued its domination of the Athletics Victoria XCR competition in 2014, winning four premierships and narrowly missing out on one or two others. Our men’s team once again won the Division 1 premiership and also took out the Division 2 title (and were a competitive 4th in Division 3). Our junior Men’s team easily won the Under 20 premiership. Although our Women’s teams were not quite so dominant, they were still highly successful, finishing 2nd in the Division 1 competition and winning the Women’s over 40 premiership. Box Hill athletes also produced many outstanding individual performances. Courtney Powell was outstanding. Although still technically a junior in 2014, Courtney won, first the state, then the national and then the Oceania Open Cross Country championships. She went on to represent Australia with distinction at the 2015 World Cross Country Championships in China, finishing in 42nd place and at the Chiba International Ekiden Relay in Japan. As well as Courtney’s triumphs, Molly Tilbrook also won a state title in the Under 20 Cross Country championships and we had a number of other great performances at the national Cross Country. Results of Box Hill athletes at national Cross Country championships in Albany, Western Australia were: Courtney Powell 1st Women Open Grace Brown 10th Women Open Anthony Aloisio 4th Men Open Mitch Dyer 2nd Men Under 20 Molly Tilbrook 10th Women Under 20 Aidan McCormack 41st Men Under 16 Will Lindsay 47th Men Under 16 Georgia Hansen 31st Women Under 18 Paris Powell 49th Women Under 18 Tamsyn Lovass 51st Women Under 14 Nikki Chapple won the Melbourne Marathon (and with it the state marathon title) in a Club record time of 2:31:05, while Neville Gardner completed his 37th Melbourne Marathon. Nev has completed every Melbourne Marathon since its inception in 1978. Steve Dinneen finished 2nd in a time of 2:28 in the Sunshine Coast marathon and won the half marathon event at the Melbourne Marathon carnival. Klarie McIntyre was selected to represent Victoria at the national half marathon championships in Sydney, where he finished in 27th place in a time of 1:14:21. Box Hill also had a star in the world of ultra-marathoning with Dion Finocchiaro winning the Coburg 6 hour Race, setting an Australian record of 84.637km (averaging 4:15 per km for 6 hours!). A fantastic effort by Dion. In all, it was another triumphant year for Box Hill’s distance runners. DIVISION 1 INDIVIDUAL RESULTS XCR’14 - MEN Lardner Park 8km cross country 7. Steve Kelly 26:25 9.
