ANNUAL

REPORT 2014

BUILDING SCHOLARS — CHANGING LIVES

Th e Emily K Center, a nonprofi t organization in Durham, was established in 2006 and named in honor of Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s mother, Emily. Our mission is to inspire students to dream big, act with character and purpose, and reach their potential as leaders in the community.

Th e Center’s K to College programs serve academically focused students in out-of-school programming designed to help them achieve in school, gain entry to and graduate from college, and break the cycle of poverty in their families. In addition to off ering K to College programs, the Center serves thousands of students and community members monthly through the use of our multipurpose rooms, gymnasium, and performance stage.

OUR MISSION

A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP

“When I see our kids, I see me. I was a kid in the inner city who needed

education and opportunity, and there were people there to help.”

– Mike Krzyzewski, Board Chair

Was there a moment in your life when making the most of the right opportunity made all the diff erence? “Opportunity” is a word we have used often here since the Emily K Center opened in 2006. In fact, the genesis of the Center is rooted in that very word. Founder Mike Krzyzewski, a fi rst generation college student himself, heeded his mother Emily’s advice to attend West Point. Could saying “yes” to that opportunity — and becoming Emily’s fi rst college success story — have been any more important?

Every success story here at the Center is just as meaningful. Th e 180 K to College students we served this year acted as leaders in their schools and communities. Th ey pursued the dream of attending college like the life-changing opportunity that it represents. Our Scholars to College program enrolled more students than ever before, and our seniors graduated high school with a 100% college enrollment rate for the third consecutive year. Beyond our K to College programs, the Center continued to serve as a resource for our community more broadly. Th ousands of community members made the Center a hub for educational, recreational, and civic programs.

Your commitment to the Center helps create these opportunities — both for our students and our community. We couldn’t be more proud or thankful for your support.

Best regards —

Adam Eigenrauch
