Abundant life through culture change, the organization-wide four-step journey toward creating environments where residents can live fulfilling, meaningful and self-directed lives, continues to occur at different rates at all of our communities. With Perkins Eastman, a Master Plan was developed and divided into a series of small projects to be implemented over a decade, beginning at The Shores at Wesley Manor. They are developing three neighborhoods of approximately 20 residents each with increased communal space and centralized core services. Research shows that residents are much happier and involved when they possess greater control over their daily routines. To improve resident function, quality-of-life and independence, two new partners Alliance Rehabilitation and Accelerated Care Plus (ACP), have joined established partner COMS Interactive (Clinical Outcomes Management Systems). These innovative and multi-dimensional clinical programs allow us to treat a wider range of prevalent conditions. They include pain management, wound healing, joint replacement, stroke recovery, neuromuscular disease, urinary incontinence, contractures, fall prevention, arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, neuro-muscular re-education, and speech, occupational and physical therapies. Also with the goal of effectively treating a wider range of prevalent geriatric health conditions, we have established short-term rehabilitation specialty clinical programs at each of the five full-service communities. These proven modalities are supported by clinical protocols developed specifically for the medical complexities of the frail elderly. Hospitals refer people who would be better served by our short-term rehabilitation. Each community has developed a specialty niche to meet the documented needs in their area. As part of our commitment to aging-in-place and to help slow residents’ transition to higher care levels, Bristol Glen has been granted

a Health Services license from the State of New Jersey. This significant milestone toward Service Expansion and Enrichment in the Strategic Plan, now allows us to provide health services directly into the independent living apartments. Also in harmony with Service Expansion, The Shores at Wesley Manor and Holy Redeemer have partnered with the goal to open six hospice- dedicated apartments. Holy Redeemer was chosen for their compatible faith-based orientation, values, unsurpassed experience, and successful record offering both traditional advanced and alternative therapies. As a multi-disciplinary care team representing two Christian organizations, we will compassionately care for people with life-limiting illness helping them to live out their last days with dignity and comfort. Our Strategic Plan highlights our identity as a Wesleyan Christian ministry that upholds the dignity and sacred worth of all persons by compassionate acts of healing, hospitality and social justice. Our new mission, vision and values speak directly to this identity. You can view these on page 4, as well as the elucidating Our Sacred Mission on page 5. Consistent with this identity, we held services of Commissioning and Blessing for four senior housing administrators and four executive directors with the cycle to finish in early 2015. Commissioning places our leaders in service and charges them with the authority to carry out their duties in ways that move our mission forward. We entrust them to uphold our covenantal values of compassion, respect, stewardship and service, to inspire our vision of growing our shared ministry through creativity, innovation and gracious hospitality, and to lead. One major initiative of the Strategic Plan is the expansion of Home and Community Based Services to increase services “beyond our walls.” Every Wednesday, PineRidge of Montclair joins forces with the Montclair Public Library and AngelaCARES to offer a vibrant resource center and

meeting place called Senior Space. The three partners promote living and learning for older adults, and provide support where needed. The successful grand opening featured community business partners, lunch, poetic entertainment, and prizes. Residents and their families’ choice of UMHNJ, reveals their high level of trust and expectations. Utilizing Technology, another component of the Strategic Plan, is essential in today’s healthcare environment. To improve our efficiencies we have adopted two technologies. HealthMEDX, a new robust electronic medical records platform, automates work flow and electronically connects critical stakeholders. It facilitates better care, productivity, informed decision making and enhances relationship building with referral sources. While Pitman Manor successfully piloted and implemented it, the other four full-service communities will follow one at a time.

The second, Senior LIFEsteps, better assists with level-of-care transitions. It examines the tasks an individual needs to do, then compares their current living arrangement with a service model proven to support those needs. The data assesses if, how, and when residents need to transition. Its instructive recommendations maximize the independence and well-being of older adults. On the financial side, we concluded a successful fiscal year 2014 with an increase in net assets of over $9 million. Total investment gains of nearly $5.4 million contributed significantly to that increase. The two refinancings completed by June 2013 reduced the amount of interest expense that UMHNJ must pay on our outstanding debt and this resulted in a large decrease in interest expense in 2014. Therefore, through this positive stewardship, we are realizing savings and able to retain more of our cash for other ministry purposes. This promotes goals under the Strategic Plan’s mandate to strengthen the financial position of the ministry. Through grants from the Foundation to the communities and unique to the Homes, the Fellowship Fund sustains and supports our charitable mission. We can only accomplish that with support from

faithful donors, many of whom are acknowledged in this report. We extend a most gracious thank you to donors, as well as to other stakeholders: volunteers, associates, business partners, auxiliaries, churches of many denominations, community organizations, residents and their families, and all those upon whose shoulders we have stood.

The theme for our fiscal year 2014 annual report, Abundant Life, reflects not only the new mission statement of United Methodist Homes of New Jersey (UMHNJ/the Homes), but also, an overall standard. Since adopted, the Strategic Plan 2013-2017 has been at the forefront.

Finding joy in caringUNITED METHODIST HOMESFollowing in the footsteps of Christ

During the last two years, we have been engaged at all levels within our UMHNJ community, in an in-depth exploration of our mission. Our goal was to identify our core values and to redefine our mission as a Wesleyan-Christian, servant ministry providing opportunities for people to remain vital and enjoy fullness of life for as long as they live, while giving us meaningful avenues for compassionate service. We’ve invested considerable time and energy in this discussion because how we think and talk about what we do, shapes how we feel and act. While we are committed to giving great customer service, that phrase does not capture the energy of serving in ministry together and being committed to offering life-sustaining care and choices for abundant living. I’m excited that our new mission, vision and values statements do that, and give us the tools to guide and inspire us as we move forward together. We do what we do, not because we are offering a “product,” but because we are called by God to make a difference in the lives of others— specifically, our residents and their families, our volunteers and business partners, each other as UMHNJ associates, and the cities, towns, and areas that our communities serve. At the heart of our calling is Jesus’ proclamation, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10, RSV). We provide compassionate service in community not so that our residents can merely exist, or that we can just bring home a paycheck, but so that we can all thrive and experience the fullness in life which Jesus affirmed is God’s intention for us. Thank you for all the ways you make our mission come alive each day.

Yours in service,

John CallananCorporate Director of Mission & Pastoral Care

The United Methodist Homes of New Jersey has been an integral part of many New Jersey neighborhoods for more than a century. Our 10 communities are a key part of the locale and connect with neighbors beyond our walls. Supporting the greater community is accomplished through the lens of our mission, “Compassionately serving in community so that all are free to choose abundant life.” Nonprofit organizations have an obligation to demonstrate their charitable nature, as well as to be exemplary neighbors. Many of the Homes’ communities are the largest employers in their respective towns and run the largest physical plants. With that privilege, we are responsible to invite neighbors onsite for meetings, voting, blood drives, health fairs, fulfilling volunteer interests, educational seminars, and other important purposes.

Programs or activities that respond to a community need are the core of Community Benefit reporting. Here are a few examples among the hundreds, to which the Homes’ has responded. From Bristol Glen far north in Newton, to Wesley by the Bay in Ocean City and each Homes’ community in between, every one demonstrates accountability and hospitality including opening doors to students who need a site to complete and gain academic credit for internships or projects, allowing organizations access and use of our community spaces for meetings and other purposes, and inviting the greater community to health education and resource fairs. While many examples have emerged, an unexpected and thriving niche has developed at Collingswood Manor. They have created and nurtured affiliations with several organizations with a principal focus on workforce development. Collaborating with Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Southern New Jersey; Arc of Burlington County; Experience Works, Inc. Senior Community Service Employment Program; Work Force 55+; and the Y.A.L.E. School, Collingswood Manor has become a unique learning environment where participants build essential job and social skills useful to both themselves and to the larger community. Each of these partner organizations have a common goal to promote participants’ employability, and to secure the right job opportunities and realize a better quality of life. Collingswood Manor shoulders the responsibility of providing a safe place for students to hone skills and learn how to appropriately socialize in the business world; the marketplace gains, the individual grows and Collingswood Manor realizes a significant impact on the greater community. In addition to missional and operational transparency to stakeholders, Community Benefit is fundamental for nonprofit organizations.
