Annual Report 2015 - 16
Even in the absence of AWAG's Founder Secretary Shri Ilaben, my association with
the organization has remained unshakable and has in fact only strengthened. Like
always, with the gratifying support of the team at AWAG, the organization was able
to perform its commitments towards women's awareness and empowerment.
Moreover, in order to sustain the work approach advocated by the Founder
Secretary, research initiatives related to domestic violence that could serve beneficial
in policy-making, were also undertaken in course of the year.
Through consensus among the Trust committee as well as effective participation of
the team members, I am confident that the organization's work will continue on the
above lines in future also.
Ramilaben Gandhi

Vision
AWAG's vision is to assert the individuality of woman and to support her in her
struggle for survival, to get social justice, and to assert equality.
Goal
The goal of the organization is to empower women through assertion of their
individuality, to strategize towards survival, to get social justice and equality.
Mission
AWAG strives to assert the individuality of women to make them aware that they are
equal to men in all aspects of life. Women are supported to get social justice in their
struggle to survive and develop as equal human beings. AWAG considers raising
awareness as the first step towards empowerment; income generation can only be
the second. A woman’s right to her body, her duty towards keeping it in health and
avoiding blind faith are considered equally important. The habit of savings is
promoted. Thus, AWAG has a holistic approach towards women’s empowerment
wherein women's rights are seen as human rights.
Objectives
To raise the image of women in society
To protest against elements in society which demean the image of women
To establish women’s equal status in society
To contribute to women’s participation in the development of the country
To support the rights of women to live with dignity and to support their welfare, education etc.
To work for the economic betterment of poor women by encouraging and promoting associations and co-operative societies to provide financial support
To work towards education, health, and welfare of children and adolescents

The ‘Mental Health Project’ has been functioning since December 2008. A pilot study
on mental health of women was undertaken in 2004-2006 and the project continued
further from September 2007 to August 2008, in the same areas viz Bapunagar,
Rakhial, Gomtipur, Saraspur and Ramol. To continue benefiting these women who
needed medical support and counselling services, AWAG got an opportunity to
extend its help by continuing its work of the said project in the same areas, followed
by the same objectives and activities.
The main objectives are:
a) To provide counselling and psychiatric support to persons suffering from mental
illnesses,
b) To strengthen women suffering from Domestic Violence to have better quality of
life.
The following activities were undertaken to fulfil these objectives -
Approaching communities to disseminate awareness about mental health
through community leaders.
Guiding the patients to the path of curative treatment.
Counselling
Psychiatric care with medicines.
Group therapy through workshops.
The awareness raising meetings were conducted in the areas of Bapunagar,
Rakhial, Gomtipur, Saraspur and Ramol. A total of 144 meetings that were
conducted over the year covered 3683
women. The theme of the meetings was to
provide a general understanding of mental
disorders and the need to treat them for a
healthy living.
Consequently, a total of 152 cases were
identified and were referred to AWAG’s
mental health centre, the details of which are
graphically represented below.
Annual Report 2015 - 16
- 5 -
All the 34 severe cases sought help with regular follow-ups. A majority of women
suffered from depression including both depressed state as well as clinical
depression which needed short-term and long-term medication respectively. The rest
experienced various psychiatric illnesses. This required more medical provision
which was supplied by AWAG. Dr. Ajay Chauhan helped by providing medicines
from the local Hospital for Mental Health, Dilli Darwaja, Ahmedabad.
The group therapy in the form of awareness-raising workshops has been very
beneficial in providing openness and acceptance of personal issues and dealing with
them more effectively. A total of 3 workshops that were conducted during the year
covering a total of 87 participants, has equipped the women to…
Start saying “NO” to violence,
Learn skills to cope with and reduce the level of stress,
Gain better health through medical help,
Seek advice from legal counsellor, etc.
On the whole, awareness among women has spread at a faster pace and many
women have been benefited through the process. Women have gained an
understanding of living a better quality of life by strongly facing the hurdles that come
by. Counselling has provided better coping skills and a supportive environment
where they feel empowered.

The Mental Health Project for Adolescents, undertaken by AWAG commenced in
September 2008. With common adolescent issues identified as adjustment
problems, relationship issues, negative attitude towards marriage, educational
issues, low self-esteem, family issues etc., the project makes an attempt to reach out
to the adolescent group both in community as well as in schools to work in the
related areas, which causes immense stress and conflicts in the family. To resolve
the effects caused in various areas of adolescents, the project focuses on particular
objectives as mentioned below:
a) To identify psychological problems prevailing among adolescents.
b) To intervene among adolescents so that they develop better coping skills to have
a better quality of life.
c) To provide psycho-education to parents where need arises.
d) To train teachers of schools in Bapunagar in providing support to adolescents.
e) To hold hands of teachers and monitor their performance.
In order to fulfil these objectives, the following activities were undertaken:
Approaching schools to contact adolescents enrolled
Approaching communities to contact non-school going and dropped out
adolescents.
Adolescents to be guided towards the curative path
Counselling
Psycho-education of parents
Psychiatric care with medicines
Teachers training for care of adolescents
Monitoring of Teachers' performance
The project intervention had a two-pronged approach to reach out to the adolescents
so as to provide them with a better understanding of mental health leading them
towards cure through counselling and medical help as per need. Due attention was
paid to providing more strength and support to the adolescents by working with both
parents and teachers by making them more aware of their problems and developing
a better understanding of the same.
To start with, awareness raising meetings were organized with the help of
community leaders and school authorities whereby AWAG conducted a total of 280
meetings covering 3595 adolescents.

A total of 243 cases were counselled, out of which 137 cases approached the centre
and 106 cases were intervened with in the school by the counsellor. A summary of
these cases is depicted below.
To categorize further, of the total cases, 123 belonged to the age group of 12-15
years with the remaining 120 in the age group of 16-20 years. School-going
adolescents (189) constitute a majority of these cases, while the count of school
drop-outs amounts to 45 and that of non school-going adolescents amounts to 9.
Additionally, a total of 22 teachers from two schools underwent training workshops
conducted by psychologists and psychotherapists. The objectives of the workshop
were as follows:
a) To create awareness about mental health
b) To sensitize teachers to the psychological needs of the adolescent students so as to support them.
c) To provide possible primary psychological and emotional help in academics,
family issues etc.
Regular monitoring and follow-up of teachers was also conducted by AWAG.
Likewise, in counselling cases, parents were provided with suitable suggestions to
improve the mental health of their children.
The resultant effect of AWAG’s interventions with adolescents over the year is that
the affected children, their parents and teachers have gained considerable
awareness regarding the psychological problems prevailing among adolescents.
Moreover, through training workshops and counselling sessions, they have
developed skills to cope effectively with their lives wherein the children experience a
warm, secure and a healthy environment.

Through our direct work with women in the villages of Radhanpur in Patan district of
Gujarat, a pressing need was identified as that of basic personal hygiene. Women
had cited problems and health issues relating to their menstrual cycle. Discussing
this issue is considered to be a social taboo in the society at large and women
cannot openly share the matter with others. It is common for women to use old rags,
sand and straw for menstrual protection, but such practices lead to major health
issues and reproductive tract infections. Lack of knowledge and affordability are
common reasons for women to continue using unhygienic practices during
menstruation. In majority of the cases women have to choose between menstrual
sanitation and food.
In view of this, Menstrual Health and Sanitation Awareness Workshops were held
each month at the village level wherein the topics of discussions centred around...
Awareness on health and hygiene of
women related to menstrual health
Problems related to menstruation
Common, local beliefs and practices
during menstruation
Care during menses
Use and disposal of sanitary napkins
These workshops that were held across 28 villages had the participation of a total of
1040 adolescent girls and women from the local communities. The sessions were
interactive and have been instrumental in creating a realization of adopting
menstrual hygiene among women and adolescents.
Some responses that were expressed by participants after the meetings are as
under:
Through this meeting we learnt about....
The importance to use of sanitary napkins which is better than using cloth
Information regarding the fertility cycle that is helpful in planning pregnancy
Intake of iron capsules to increase blood count among women
Misconceptions about contraceptive pills such as Mala-D
Annual Report 2015 - 16
- 9 -
Maintaining hygiene of cloth and other materials used during menstruation
Occurrence of white discharge
The importance of sharing true knowledge about menstruation with young
girls who are not aware about it
To sum up, it can be said that though the communities are steeped into conventional
customs and traditions, the younger generation is slowly and steadily opening up to
new and more importantly hygienic practices as a result of which we hope to mitigate
the occurrence of reproductive ailments among the participating communities. The
ASHA Workers and Anganwadi Workers in the areas are also playing a supportive
role in this intervention.
