I am delighted to report that 2015-16 has proved

to be a phenomenal period for ECI, in terms of

b o th fin a nc ia lp erfo rm a nc e & p ro g ram

accomplishment, as we successfully achieved

almost all the goals that we chalked out for this

duration.

The firm was founded in 1989 by Shahnaz

Kapadia Rahat and was taken over by new

management in 2013. The founder built an

institution from which strong programs of national

level impact have been implemented. The current

management is successfully taking forward the

agenda and mission of Ms. Kapadia and the firm

is recognized today nationally and internationally

as one of the best capacity building organizations

and curriculum design experts. The roster of

international clients is rapidly increasing where

this year 65% of projects were funded by Donors

and International-NGOs and the firmis also proud

to announce that over 60% of the Clients are

recurring. It is the vision of the Directors,

dedicated efforts of the whole team and support

of fellow organizations that has strongly

contributedtothis success.

The period of 2015-16 was remarkable for ECI for

many reasons, one of them being that the firm

took a step of moving from its Residential Training

Center in Barakahu to a central office in

Islamabad making the firm more accessible to

our Clients. Moreover, the firm added another

thematic area "Health & Nutrition" to its scope of

work and is actively pursuing this theme. ECI has

also diversified its portfolio from Micro-Enterprise

development toa self-initiativeof promoting Health

& Nutrition to other aspects of Livelihood &

En te rp rise De ve lo p ment.Bu t the b igge st

achievement for this time period has been the

introduction of Virtual College for Community Based

Changemakers (e-CCBC) and onlinecourses.

The edge of the firm's work is that it envisions

strengthening people and local communities for the

express purpose of making them independent &

self reliant instead of inundating them with external

input, which keeps them dependant on others. It is

this sustainability aspect that has led to

extraordinary results in most of ECI's work. Some

successful interventions of ECI in this year included

replication of ECI’s Changemakers Model in district

Lasbela in collaboration with ILO, training roll-outs

on Effective Agriculture Extension Skills for JICA,

Peace-Poetry Project implemented in Multan for

Umeed Jawaan, Implementation of Gender

Approach in IT Sector for GEP, Designing &

Implementing Financial Literacy Program for JICA

Beneficiaries and Technical Skills Training Program

inUC Musazai forUNDP.

In times ahead, ECI willventure more in the practical

implementation and placement of trainees/

beneficiaries rather than just disseminating

knowledge and concept in a training hall. The e-

learning practice for the community will also serve

as a new&innovativehallmark.

In closing, I would like to extend my heartfelt

gratitude toall our worthy clients and fellowpartners

who joined hands with us to work on various social

causes and issues. Furthermore, my entire team

also deserves sincere appreciation who left no

stone unturnedforachievingthis success.

Financial Literacy Trainings to JICA's Project Beneficiaries1

Financial Literacy is fast gaining popularity among the

masses and even among donors. After the successful

interventions of ECI with State Bank of Pakistan for

designing and implementing National Financial Literacy

Program and then various financial literacy courses with

International Finance Corporation, International Labor

Organization and World Bank, ECI is now implementing

Financial Literacy program for JICA beneficiaries. Three

customized modules have been designed for the first time

in Pakistan for students, farmers and mothers. 1000

beneficiaries belonging to seven different JICA projects

across Punjab and Sindh were trained. A project of this

nature is being implemented for the first time and ECI has

been selected as one of the implementing partners in

collaboration withGrant Thornton.

In order toensure sustainability of the project, selected staff

of all thegovernment implementing agencies of seven JICA

projects were passed through Training of Trainercourse.

For the very first time ECI implemented a full fledge Te c

h n i c a l Tr a i n i n g p ro g r a m fo r U N D P ' s Yo u th

Empowerment Project which targeted 150 youth (including

30% women) of UC Musazai, District D.I. Khan. The trades

identified for technical trainings were selected after a

thorough market and area assessment and trainings were

designed and developed for the following trades:

Commercial Tailoring, Grocery & Trading Business, Cloth

Sh op , A d vanc e Tra in ing Tec hniques, L ivest ock

Management and Computer Skills. At the end of the project

the community requested that the trainings should be

continued as they were resulting in increased household

income. Due to this highly positive feedback, ECI has been

awarded a contract extension where ECI willbe training 160

additionalbeneficiaries fromD.I.Khan and Bannu.

Skills and Technical Trainings for Youth – UNDP2

This initiative was taken so that in future this

staff can be used to train beneficiaries on

Community based Changemakers Program to provide Business

Solutions to Local Issues – ILO3

Changemaker Program is a flagship idea of ECI which has

been developed on the notion that "solution to any problem

comes from within". Under this program, ECI identifies and

selects individuals (changemakers) from within the

community and builds their capacity to find local solutions

toproblems intheirarea.

After successful close of ECI's initiative with International

Labor Organization (ILO) in District Thatta, Rahimyar Khan

and Lahore where Changemaker model was implemented

to promote job placement and self-employment, ECI was

re-contracted to implement the same model in District

Lasbela.

30 changemakers were trained being trained in Lasbela

through this community based mechanism for combating

increasing unemployment in the area through a four

semester program which comprised of class room trainings

and field tasks. These 30 changemakers will work with 510

beneficiaries to facilitate them in self-

employment in unconventional trades

example, fruit storage and care, solar panel

making & battery making and selling, to

improvelivelihoodconditions inthearea.

Job Fair – SUNGI4

For SUNGI Development Organization, ECI successfully

designed & implemented one day Job Fair benefitting

almost 70 jobseekers in districtHaripur. The objective of the

job fair was to serve the dual purpose of bridging the gap

between businesses that are recruiting and hiring people

and familiarizing them with the resources available in the

market, while also matching those businesses to qualified

jobseekers withinthetargetpopulation.

Financial Literacy Program – Pakistan Microfinance Network5

For Pakistan Microfinance Network (PMN), ECI is

developing financial literacy orientation material for existingand potential borrowers of MFIs. The firm will thenundertake ToTs in all provinces for partner organizations of

PMN, and conduct awareness sessions for the borrowersand potential borrowers of MFIs where the orientationmaterial will be rolled-out. Under this project ECI is also

designing a comprehensive, national level mediacampaign to spread messages regarding how toapply foraloan, effective use of loan, repayment of loan and role of

Credit InformationBureau.

devised and formulated a customized & user friendly Life

Skills Based Education training curricula, catering to the

needs of young boys & girls of three different ages (9-13

years old, 14-16 years old & 17-19 years old). After a

thorough Rapid Need Assessment & Curriculum review (of

PLAN International), the 06 detailed learner's workbooks &

trainer manuals (03 for boys & 03 for girls) were formulated,

being completely mindful of the sensitivity of the topic, that

is reproductive health of youngsters & the traditional &

orthodox set-up of the concerned communities. An

additional aspect of these modules was that each module

had a section on work readiness where age group 9 -13 had

session on career orientation, age group 14 - 16 focused

towards career building, while for 17 - 19 year old mentoring

sessions were built in regarding moving into professional

world.

After devising the customized course, ECI went a step

ahead and arranged a roll-out of two TOTs simultaneously,

in district Thatta& Kot-addu, Muzaffargarh, in order to train

the trainers for taking the said cause forward. The 03-day

TOT was specifically designed to enhance the capacities &

competencies of the trainees around essentially required

training skills on Life Skills Based Education. Also 8 street

theatres (4 in each district) were designed and conducted

to create awareness & realization among

parents & youngsters about essentially

required knowledge on Gender equality,

Counter Harassment & Sexual Abuse, Life

Skills Based Education, etc followed by

group discussions at the end with the

presentaudience.

Social Changemaker Program South Punjab – Creative Karachi4

South Punjab where the program sensitized 80 (50%females) at risk youth around Peace & Countering ViolentExtremism (CVE). These 80 youth implemented 16 CVE

Projects (ingroups if5) on the theme of peace and CVE thatreached outto7173 indirectbeneficiaries.

“ECI team reviewed the material on Life Skills Based Education (LSBE) particularly on the adolescent sexual

reproductive health and rights (ASRHR) by technical experts and developed customized training manuals and

workbooks targeting both gender of adolescents, young people and parents. From the beginning till the end of the

assignment the ECI team was very organized and technically sound. They accomplished the assignment with keen

interest in developing the customized Life Skills Based manual in the light of our suggestions and requirements.

During the training of trainers (ToT) and Training of Young People ECI trainers transferred knowledge and skills

successfully. They have used interactive theatre technique (culturally appropriate) to introduce the sensitive topic of

“ECI pioneers in capacity building initiatives, their work is focused on diverse thematic areas with demonstrated

performance on women empowerment and livelihood development. ECI is an implementing partner of Gender Equity

Program under the support of USAID. Under a competitive sub-grant; ECI has implemented a project titled

“Supporting Female Graduates Access into information Technology Sector through Internship Program” in Islamabad

Region. The focus and aim of this project was to encourage young women IT graduates to join work force in this field.

ECI worked towards integrating gender into the ITsector.Through this project,ECI trainedand successfully placed 120

female IT graduates on a 6-month internship program with relevant employers. It also worked with the employers to

orient them about the Sexual Harassment at Work Place Act 2010; how they can work constructively in making the

working environment gender friendly. This helped ECI in not only helping 15 IT organizations change their human

resource policies by making separate work stations for female staff, assigning separate washrooms for women

employees but ithas helped ECI in building and managing partnerships. The project is in its last quarter and so far 30

interns have received fulltimejobofferswhilst theyarecompleting theirplacements.”
