Education

Education is only the medium to eradicate the poverty. One in every ten children is disabled in India making up to 30 p ercent of the 40 to 80 million people living with disabilities. It is found that 90 per cent of these children do not receive a nykind of education. Because of poor economic conditions these children loses the opportunity for good education andnutrition.SCD gives priority to all types of differently abled children’s education. SCD sensitizes the importance of educationin the community as well as in the mind of differently able children’s parents. In 1985 SCD has started a residentialdisabled school from 1st to 7th standard having all facilities i.e. hostel for boys and girls. Educated and experienced teachingstaffs are teaching the students. The strength of the school is 88. Out of 88, 17 is visual impaired (Boys-13, Girls 04), 41Hearing impaired (Boys25-, Girls16), and 30 no. is MR (boys 25, Girls-05). Till date many students have been passed outfrom the school and rehabilitated in various livelihood activities. Besides the school we work in the community for educationof Children with disabilities:

Livelihood Programmes1- Green Livelihood

Persons with disabilities cultivate vegetables

In India most of the people living in rural area and 75% of the people depend on agriculture for their livelihood. In agricul turesector the job opportunities are very less, so the unemployed rate is increasing gradually. The livelihood opportunities are veryless for the disabled people because of the negative attitude towards them in community level, corporate sector and agricultu resector.

SCD is providing various livelihood training to the disabled people i.e. on farm training and off farm training

1-On farm training: Agriculture training, Water management training etc2-Off farm training: Motorcycle Repairing, Cycle Repairing, Tailoring, Mobile Repairing etc

Last year we provided green livelihood training to 25 nos. of PWDs farmers, after this training the PWDs farmers have staredcultivation and they are appreciating SCD for their success.

Out Comes The PWDs farmers knew the new technology of agriculture. Change the cultivation practices from chemical towards organic. Reduce investment in cultivation.

Persons with disabilities need skills to engage in livelihood activities. But they start with a number of disadvantages. Their familiesand communities may assume that they are unable to engage in such activities. They often lack access to basic education, making them unqualified to join skills training courses. Awareness Programmes

Mr. M. M. Das, P.D.SCD, Mr. Sailendu Nanda, F.C.SCD with Sarpanch & E.O. at Manigaon GP

Low vision and blindness have direct effects on individuals, families, and communities. These effects range from a decrease inquality of life and increased mortality to large-scale economic consequences. Culturally, there is often a stigma associated withblindness, further alienating the afflicted from their communities. Social disadvantages are also enormous: 50% of the blind inimpoverished countries report a loss of social standing and decision-making authority, and 80% of blind women note a loss ofauthority within their families. Fortunately, there is hope that we can reverse these devastating impacts, as long as SCD continuesto increase access to surgery and care.

Towards creating a healthier society by popularizing preventive measures, SCD organizes awareness programs on variousissues of health and hygiene. For this purpose, Organisation makes use of visual media which communities are familiar with …like street plays, Print media etc. Health camps are also generally organized in Gram panchayats.

Highlights

SCD, organised awareness programme on “Eye Health, Prevention of Disabilities and Mother and Child Care”in GPslevel

It covered two Blocks and two GPs of Balangir district.

The awareness programme reached to 20 GPs of Muribahal block, 22 GPs of Saintala Block and 02 GPs of TitilagarhBlock.
