ABOUT OUR GAME Cricket is a game of skill. Observers can talk all they like about how the game has changed but in the end it all comes back to technique and temperament. Every generation thinks it has invented the wheel. Newspapers, films, telephones have been said to have been consigned to the rubbish dump, but all remain intact. Smart phones and various technologies are supposed to alter everything, but still there are cornflakes and toast available on the breakfast table. It’s the same in cricket. The rules are tweaked here and there but the battle between bat and ball endures. Bats are thicker (as are some of the batters), but not longer, or wider. Balls can be coated in mint or rubbed with abrasive paper, but they remain the same weight and shape. The stumps are the same height; the pitch is [mostly] the same length. Methods of dismissal are the same, bowled, leg before, caught and so forth. Clubs remain a fundamental tenet of the game. They remain unchanged in their objects. In fact, never have they been more important to the game. In short, cricket always adjusts to its times but retains its essence. Cricket does not inhabit a museum. It is a living entity and obliged to respond to its surroundings. We ought to congratulate the game for its ability to absorb change. In any case the core of the game has survived. It will survive the Coronavirus challenge also.

FROM OUR PATRON

The Payneham Cricket Club (PCC) was founded more than 150 years ago and is one of the oldest and most respected community cricket clubs, not only in South Australia, but also in Australia. Our Club is well known and highly regarded not only in the world of cricket but especially within the social community in general within our state. This high regard is manifested in our relationships with Cricket Australia (CA) and the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) as well as with other community groups. On any given weekend during the 2019/2020 season our Club fielded 14 teams. This is very impressive. These included women’s and men’s teams as well as girls’ and boys’ teams.

In its early years, the PCC played in the East Torrens Cricket Association (ETCA) which was founded in 1898. Subsequently our Club was a founder member of the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association (ATCA) in 1932 and was deeply involved in the establishment of the North Eastern Junior Cricket Association in 2004. Subsequently, our Club’s involvement in these cricket associations have resulted in our Club winning many Premierships. In the ETCA between 1909 and 1931, the PCC played in 20 Grand Finals winning a total of 13 Premierships. In the ATCA the PCC 1st XI has won 10 Premierships while other senior men’s teams have won 14 Premierships. The PCC 1st IX Royals women’s team has won 3 of the four Premierships contested in that newly formed competition. Junior boys’ teams have won 23 Premierships and our Sub Junior boy’s teams have won 15 Premierships since 2004. All of these magnificent achievements demonstrate the long, illustrious, and successful history of our Club.

The PCC has many fine traditions associated with it and these traditions embody a code of behaviour and level of sportsmanship of the highest quality both on and off the field. The PCC’s service to the community is of the highest standard via its participation and involvement in the community and via its competition on the cricket field. The Club has a long tradition of having had many distinguished names pass through its ranks over numerous decades and this tradition will continue into the future from our current players, especially from our young players both girls and boys.

Regrettably due to the Covid‐19 pandemic crisis, CA found it necessary to cancel all 2019/2020 community cricket and club functions throughout Australia prior to the Cricket season officially ending. This action frustrated some of our teams’ efforts to achieve a Premiership. Notwithstanding this, our Club congratulates those of our teams which have succeeded during this season, namely:

1. The Under 12 Dukes were Division 1 Premiers. 2. The Women’s PCC Royals IX were the 2019 1st Grade Premiers. 3. The Under 12 Dukes and the Under 12 Blues were winners in their T20 competitions in

Divisions 1 and 3 respectively. 4. The Under 14s were the runners up in their Division 2 competition. 5. The Under 12 Blues and the Under 12 Knights were 3rd and 4th respectively in the Division 3

competition.

Unfortunately, the Women’s PCC Royals Red IX were runners up for the 2020 1st Grade Premiership due to the application of a “small net run rate” margin measurement by the ATCA. The Women’s PCC Red IX were the strong favourites to win the Women’s Grand Final. Similarly the Men’s PCC 3rd XI finished 3rd which frustrated their excellent chance of winning the C2 Grade Grand Final.


Our Club also congratulates four PCC players who were honoured with ATCA 2019/2020 JS Sports Awards. Jess Murray was awarded the Bowling Trophy for Women’s 1st Grade 2019 having taken 11 wickets, Robbie Westley was awarded the Batting Trophy for B2 Grade having scored 399 runs, Jignesh Patel was awarded the Bowling Trophy for the LO Division 4 having taken 37 wickets and Jake Boerema was runner up in the Noel Keen Memorial Award for Wicket Keeper of the Year for A2 Grade.

The leadership team of the PCC is in the process of developing and strengthening our Club in all aspects in which the Club is involved over the next 3 to 5 years. This is a very challenging opportunity for all of us to contribute towards the success of this endeavour. It requires a total team effort throughout our Club of working together within the PCC towards agreed common objectives which will not only benefit the community but will also enhance the Club’s on field performance in all aspects of the game of cricket. This requires continued discipline not only in playing cricket but also in practising and training regularly for each game.

The Club is singularly fortunate in having an extremely dedicated and highly motivated Committee with an accumulated experience base totalling more than 150 years. The leadership of the Club and the Committee encompasses an optimal mix of talents and leadership styles which enhance the overall pursuit of excellence which all members of the Club may strive to emulate. All members have the opportunity to aspire to maximise the Club’s strengths while simultaneously minimising the Club’s weaknesses. All members may be encouraged to aspire to a coordinated identification of opportunities for the benefit of the Club while simultaneously eradicating threats to our Club.

These leadership efforts over the past couple of years have resulted in some improvements in the Club’s on field performances and in the Club being in a sound financial position. Women’s and girl’s cricket are thriving within our Club and there is a commitment by all to develop and grow this initiative. The Junior and Sub Junior boy’s teams continue to perform on the field with continuing impressive successes and there is a commitment by senior players and coaches to draw out the best in our young boy’s teams not only in cricket but especially in their individual development as a person and as a sportsman. However many challenges remain for the successful development of all of our teams. All of this will continue to require the establishment of achievable and meaningful objectives supported by a system of coherent and compatible strategies designed to achieve those objectives and a structure of tactics and a network of intermediate goals designed to fulfil supporting the strategies.

It is well to always keep in mind that the PCC has grown and developed for more than 150 years due to the dedicated selfless efforts of volunteers working together for the benefit of the Club and all of its members. This is continuing to this day and will continue long into the future. It takes a huge effort to organise and run a Club like the PCC and this can only be achieved through the tireless efforts of volunteers who enthusiastically carry out these efforts in addition to honouring their family, professional and other personal obligations. These volunteers are currently working long hours preparing for the 2020/2021 season which begins in less than three months. For example, the agenda for the most recent PCC Committee Meeting, held in early July, consisted of more than 40 items to be discussed and decided upon regarding the forthcoming season. In addition to planning for the forthcoming season there remain certain aspects pertaining to the 2019/2020 season that need to be finalised.


The PCC has previously announced the appointment of Josh Farmer as our A Grade Captain for the forthcoming season. On its website the Club has stated that “Josh is well known and respected by many of our players, having previously captained the A Grade. He also has extensive experience at District Cricket level and will bring proven captaincy and leadership skills to the role. He is looking forward to meeting and speaking with the playing group and will be aiming to build an inclusive, winning culture and have players enjoy their cricket”.

And so, my fellow Club members ask not what your Club can do for you ‐ ask what you can do for your Club. Also, ask not what your Club will do for you, but what together we can do for the development and growth of our Club. Our Club asks of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice today which it has also asked of Club members throughout the many previous generations of members throughout the Club’s history.

The onset of the worldwide pandemic has resulted in an additional, enormous workload on all our volunteers at PCC as they prepare your Club for the 2020/2021 season. This additional work is required by CA and SACA cooperating with the Covid‐19 regulations of both the Australian and South Australian Governments.

It has been said, “Our problems are manmade; therefore these problems can be solved by man. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings”. All it takes is knowing what it is that you wish to achieve and then having the collective will to achieve it.

Managing a club like the PCC is not easy. It is a hard, very hard and a difficult task. And so, my fellow Club members we will choose the goal to build and develop our Club. We will choose to build and develop our Club over the next 3 to 5 years and do other things as well, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, and because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we at the PCC are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to achieve.

Most senior members of the PCC observe many things about our Club the way they are today. But where do these same senior members wish our Club to be in 3 to 5 years’ time? And where do they see it going? A minor variation of what George Bernard Shaw once wrote is worth noting, “Some men see things as they are and say, why? I dream things that never were and say, why not?”.

TRIBUTE TO A CLUB LEGEND

When many of us started out at Payneham, we got hooked into doing things when our kids started in the juniors so many of us bumped into Graham and Heather. Graham is a small neat busy and engaging man, he always bustled urgently around the club, looking like a well‐dressed cross between a friendly Minion and Frodo Baggins, but always ready to help, always with a smile and “yes”, often he and Heather could be found running the canteen. After games, he could be seen waiting around, stooped, and anxious, like a carnivorous librarian, waiting for his weekly feed of Club scorebooks.

Every Club needs a man like Mr. Vinnie. And people like the Vincent family. Selfless contributions. Endless patience. Unfathomable commitment to all things Payneham. For over 36 years now and still counting.

Annual Reports can be dry documents. Full of stuff everyone wants to look through, but nobody really reads. And if they do, they read their section. Or they read it after sixteen lagers or twenty six reds and they reminisce thinking “surely I made more runs than that?” or “Geez he was a good player, and what about that night he fell off the Morphett Street Bridge, twice!”

Players at Payneham can do that. Thanks to Graham. However. He is now in his 80’s and has decided to put down a few of his pens and to retire his very well‐thumbed computer mouse. We will miss his input.

There is however also a second ‘however’. He is going to hang onto the idea of keeping the match stats and his wonderful publication “Runs Galore” which assiduously records everything statistical outcome from on the field! Here is his story. In his own words. Typically understated. Neat and tidy. Probably just like his wicket keeping and batting.

in 1984, after a 21‐season career with the ETSA CC as an Opening Batsman/Wicketkeeper (3770 runs/356 dismissals) I retired to the other side of the pickets in time to see my son Greg start his cricketing career with the U14s at Payneham. From that vantage point I was conned into scoring for a couple of seasons.

Following Greg’s progress, by 1991 I found myself scoring and managing the 3rd XI and then the 2nd XI, whilst Heather established herself as arguably the Associations best afternoon tea provider which of course needed support!

Around 1999 Don von Einem acquired a new Cricket Statistics Program (Cricket Stats for Windows ‐ CSFW) and as one thing led to another, I found myself loading into the program all of the scorebooks data from Keith Duke’s assiduously stored collection (dating from 1942) – a task that occupied all the available spare time for around 3 years. And so, I began the statistician role to keep this data base ongoing.


Keith, in his role as Secretary, had produced the club’s annual report pretty much in the same format from 1946!!] and with his passing I set out to provide a modern report more in keeping with the 21st century. It soon became apparent that repeating historic information annually was inappropriate and unnecessarily overloading the production. So began a companion production dedicated specifically to historic players records – “Runs Galore”, made possible primarily by the availability of the data in CSFW. This booklet has been updated annually ever since and is now available on the club’s electronic library – accessible via the web site.

In parallel with this activity Heather managed the Saturday canteen and for quite some time, the afternoon teas as well. In the same time frame (2001/02) Cricket Australia introduced a computer platform for the management of players (Australia wide), and the recording of match results. Since this fitted well with the statistician activity and I found myself as the club’s “Principle User” setting up registrations at the beginning of a season, chasing down the score books after each match (the worst headache of all!!), and recording the results [then in two non‐compatible systems]. It was not until 2018 that we were able to get the creator of CSFW (who still supports the product) to build an automatic upload from My Cricket to CSFW.

Of course, supporting coaches and managers in team establishment (junior grades), and recording weekly team selection was all part of the ‘game’. And now as the years roll on, I have shed all of these duties except (for now) the recording and management of the CSFW data base and the update of Runs Galore, along with providing ongoing support to those who carry on the management of Payneham Cricket club.

Thanks for everything you have done Graham. Thanks to Heather and Sandy and Greg also. Payneham has been the very very fortunate beneficiaries of you and your family’s massive service. Our Annual Reports may never be the same again.

ABOUT THE LOVE FOR CRICKET

A warm welcome to the season 2019/20 Annual Report from “Sir Donald”, or is that Lord Donald? I am never quite sure. I will admit to being extremely embarrassed, and a bit annoyed when our hard‐working Club Secretary bestowed this nickname on me. However, the nickname did sit a little more comfortably when he explained it had absolutely nothing to do with my batting or cricketing skills, but rather because I was old, grumpy and had no friends! So why is an old bloke like me still playing cricket, and why are we all playing cricket? I am sure we all have many reasons. I bet that many of them are the same as mine. An absolute love for the game – I would play or watch cricket anywhere; in the backyard, on the road, at the beach, at the nets, at Devitt, with a tennis ball, a corky, a two piece or a four piece! The simple unreserved joy of playing a team sport, where you can revel in your team‐mates and club mate’s successes, and where you can sledge your team‐mates harder than the opposition and then still enjoy a beer afterwards!

Being a part of a great club, one with a great and storied history, and contributing towards making a wonderfully improving culture, thanks to our club leadership!

The satisfaction to be found in constantly trying to improve our games, in helping others improve their games, and sharing in their joy when they get success in a game, or even just a reward for their effort!

And, let’s not forget that one great cut, drive or pull shot you play, or that one unplayable delivery you bowl, or that great partnership with a team mate that is enough to bring you back for another season and make up for all those days chasing leather for 70 overs in 35 degrees. So, enjoy the Annual Report. I hope your season was as much fun as mine. Stay safe in the off season and let us hope life returns to some state of normality by the start of next season.

FROM THE PRESIDENTS DESK

The 2019/20 season came to an abrupt halt with the measures put in place to protect against the Covid‐19 global pandemic, ending a season that had offered our Club some progress on the various challenges it faced off field, and some progress in our on field performances across the grades.

I continue to be encouraged with both the recovery and standing of the financial position of the club. New disciplines and wider vision for what we can do have all played a role in this process. Our cost base, much of which is out of our direct control remains an ongoing challenge we continue to monitor and manage, and now more than ever we are working collegiately with the football club. The Cricket Club committee has invested huge man hours in this process, and I do see evidence that this hard work will ultimately deliver the Club a much healthier position, on and off the field.

As the substance of the preface suggests Cricket is a resilient beast. The changes to the management and requirement for the role of volunteers, the mandatory use of helmets at all levels, the change to the player insurance model and cost, the amendment to the junior grades and competition rules such as shortened pitches, less players, shorter games are all changes that landed at our Club last season. They all have merit and are sensible changes, but they do all demand additional work, costs to the Club and increased persistence of our many volunteers to both enable and manage them. No doubt next season will present further challenges as the world seeks new normal after the coronavirus which has already changed our way of life.

Every season starts with confidence and hope, as did this one. On field we continue to develop the Club. A genuine highlight has been the impact of our Women’s program, this season expanding from 1 to 3 teams, and resulting in a further Premiership. The Royals are a significant and welcome commitment to the Club, and we continue to lead the way in the ATCA in embracing the women’s game.

In the men’s senior games, we enjoyed an up and down year. Our 3rd XI was a highlight winning 7 of their 11 games and making the finals. In the 1st and 2nd XI's we continued to introduce younger players with a clear eye to the future, and whilst this did offer some inconsistent team performances, it has been pleasing to see them find their feet and improve their games – they are the future of our Club.

We fielded 7 junior boy’s teams this season with a strong number of U10 and U12 teams which augurs well for the future, and the recent change to the age gradings has settled a little and we hope that we can expand our program further with the certainty of the gradings and the competition conditions.

I think we can all look forward with optimism for the 2020/21 playing season, and that whatever the circumstances we face, we will endure as a Club that continues to service its community and acts as a leader within the ATCA competition.

PRACTICE NET TO PITCH – A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR As I sit and write this the world is a completely different place to the one in which we began our

cricket season. As COVID‐19 continues to cast a huge shadow over everything we do and how we

interact, it is hard to imagine that this only began as the last games of the season were played.

The cricket landscape in our community continues to change at a quicker rate than we have known

in the last decades.

The club is no longer solely focused on managing Men’s senior cricket on a Saturday afternoon and

facilitating cricket for boys and young men basically on a Sunday. We treat with equal importance

Women’s cricket, junior cricket for girls and boys and ATCA cricket. We welcome everyone that

wants to participate in community cricket and encourage them to enjoy playing with each other at

Payneham.

Our year started with more planning than we had undertaken in recent memory to make sure we hit

the new season running. We started with developed plans and roles for all of our volunteers, a

comprehensive budget and roadmap for our interaction with our key stakeholders.

A large thank you must go to Mark Colley, Ash Evans and or patron Robert Duke for a considerable

amount of time in meeting and planning so the process could be a success.

We quickly filled most of our junior teams and exceeded our expectations in younger age groups.

That coupled with all juniors being financial meant that we were off and running from the junior

perspective. I would like to thank Trent Launer and Shaun Grant particularly for getting this

organised. Together with all parents and volunteers that helped them keep the junior teams well

organised throughout the year. Whether it was scoring for a day, helping with team management, or

coaching a side, everything that is done is greatly appreciated.

Whilst we speak of the juniors, it is great to see the support SACA has thrown behind Payneham and

set up a Junior Cricket Blasters hub at the ground. We have appreciated the support from our peak

bodies. The ATCA, SACA and Cricket Australia have all recognised our efforts particularly in relation

to the advancement of Women’s and Girls cricket.

We had many new people join our committee to fill the void that was created after losing

experienced members last year. It was great to welcome Will Bakewell on as Treasurer and Martin

Subramaniam to assist him. We formally welcomed Jess David (nee von Einem) and Duncan Dolling

on to the committee, with focus on social events and fundraising.

From a committee perspective, I would like to thank them all and the great deal of work they do

around the club.

President Don von Einem has been instrumental in guiding the women’s and girls’ programs.

Convening a junior management group and helping with all other facets of the club. As well as a

power of other work around the club including working with the retired men’s group.

That group included, Grant Wasley, Rob Rutter, Don and particularly Tony Durdin. They have done a

great deal to improve the facilities around both of our major sites. The nets are in great shape, with


a sight screen and any number of improvements. Devitt Oval has never been better organised. A

huge thank you to those gentlemen for everything that have done throughout the year.

Grant has continued to be instrumental in the management of our senior cricket program

throughout the year. He never misses a training and is always seen at a match or two on a Saturday.

Helping him prepare for the thankless task of selection or filling a side or two. In saying that, this

year has seen a good deal more senior cricketers come to our ranks and unlike last season we did

not miss a game and fielded competitive sides in each grade.

Ash Evans as cricket coaching coordinator again helped guide our program forward. The all‐in

trainings that were able to be scheduled were gratefully received by the whole Payneham cricket.

Ash through his contacts was able to make sure that we fully utilised our sponsorship at Mega

Courts and we kicked the season off with a huge number of indoor sessions. That coupled with

setting up contact with Joe Root Cricket Academy and head coach Shaun Seigert meant we were

able to tap into his enormous coaching credentials. The Root academy were able to use the

Payneham facilities for training throughout the year and we look forward to this relationship

blossoming.

Kevin Husler remained on the committee although retiring from the role of Treasurer and his

guidance to our new Treasurer has been invaluable. Will Bakewell stepped into the role as Treasurer

this year and has found his feet well. Together with assistance from new committee member Martin

Subramaniam they have got the collection of subs & payments well under control.

Shaun Grant joined our committee as a junior parent & coach and has been crucial in making sure

there was continuity throughout our club. His efforts in promoting junior cricket and rallying other

parents to get involved has been greatly appreciated.

Jess David (she got married halfway through the season, so congratulations Jess & Adrian) was very

important for getting our social scene sorted. She put in a great deal of work into our inaugural

Masquerade Party, which was a great night. Thanks also to Donna Boerema who was instrumental in

the success of the night.

Duncan Dolling also formed part of the committee and his main focus was our social calendar. He

helped greatly with the Party and was a driving force for the quiz night. He also held an important

voice on the committee as a senior player.

We also had a long‐distance committee member for the last year, Max Hughes whilst based in China

has helped us with a great many tasks. When he unexpectantly got back for an extended period late

in the season he continued on his support.

In thanking all of the committee the highest of praise must be reserved for the Secretary Mark

Colley. His input into running the club is immense. His passion for the club and tackling all of the

challenges that are presented is immeasurable. He is the perfect choice for Secretary as his mastery

of the English language is second to none, that coupled with his dry wit. Not everyone sees what

Mark does around the club but like the proverbial duck gliding across the water he is paddling

furiously underneath. The addition of the Duke Doodlings has been a great addition to the club as

well and we thank him for that.


Our Patron Robert Duke’s input has been greatly appreciated this year as always. His sage advice and

worldly experience are always appreciated around the club. Together with his wife Elizabeth we are

truly grateful to have them involved with Payneham.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our volunteers throughout the year, whether it

was scoring for one match, coaching a junior team or anything else to help the club run. Thank you.

Please take the time to read all of the junior reports, captains report’s and others so the people that

help get our teams on the ground are duly recognised.

Congratulations to all of the trophy winners and l would like to thank all of the donors.

The Payneham Cricket Club would not be able to function without its sponsors. I would like to thank

of local supporters who help make the work.

As I write this, we all face uncertainty as to what the world will look come next season, but let it be

said that Payneham is in strong position and will continue to provide a place for everyone to enjoy

playing the great game of cricket. Cricket in our area is facing uncertain times with many clubs

surrounding us struggling to fill teams. We will remain strong and put all of our efforts in to making

sure we take Payneham Cricket Club forward.

ROYALS SEASON REVIEW The Royals came into the 2019/2020 season with some work to do and some unfinished business from last season to work out, with a grand final loss in the past and a new season to look forward to the Royals got to work. We lost a few players in the likes of Bree Marziale, Narelle Kameniar, Kalani Aston, Donna Boerema, Tabby Dillow and Nicole Stagg. You would think that was a lot of girls to lose and that we might be in a bit of strife, and as talented and amazing as all those women are and we were sad to hear they wouldn't be playing but we had something up our sleeve.

However, with help from our sister club Kensington and the wonderful Jane Lowe we acquired young guns Eloise Jansen (Rocket), Alicia Doyle (Doyley), we also picked up Jessica Murray (J2), Chloe Frick (Frickey) who proved to be absolute power houses for us.

Further, we pulled players from our junior ranks such as Lizzie Moran, who has been dubbed Queen Elizabeth (Queenie) for her amazing work with the ball and is also our resident lefty now that Narelle is gone. Aysha Hamilton Smith joined us this season and we had our normal crew of misfits from last season in Kate Evans, Jessica von Einem, Joleen Hall, Sam Tammita and Sube Bansal to round it out.

Season 2019 brought us an unbeaten season with a premiership cup at the end of it. Season 2020 also brought the Royals a second senior team in the Royals Gold, led by Maeve Edwards and also gave us Jinisha Mistry and a few others coming through from Kensington, our junior Royals also stepped up in this gold team with Amy Freeman, Bethany Clark, Hannah Clark and Sanvi Shah.

The original Royals now called Royals Red for the 2020 season were on the way for another stellar season to back up our 2019 premiership, we had one loss for the season with two of our main players out for that game. We finished second on the ladder by a few runs to Reynella who took out the premiership cup for 2020 due to a cancelled finals series.

Royals Gold in their first season in the ATCA women’s turf competition held their own for most of the season finishing 8/10 in the final standings with a brand‐new team of mostly juniors this is a team to watch out for in the future of cricket. Stand out performances go to Jessica Murray for leading wickets across the two seasons with 14 wickets and winning the ATCA 2019 bowling trophy with 11 wickets for 2019. Kate Evans, always a standout leading our batting front with a total across two seasons of 218 runs.

1st XI SEASON REVIEW

Adam Keene – Captain

Payneham A grade finished in 10th position on the A2 ladder for the 2019/20 season. A very

challenging start to the season meant the team took a couple of games to work things together, but

we did and in turn we achieved some very good wins. The other positive note was that our losses

generally were quite small, we did not get blown away, apart from a couple where we failed with the

bat, but no other team got hold of us.

Our wins came against Golden Grove (away), Fulham (home), and Unley (away). Against Golden

Grove we defended a small total of 155 runs. We managed to restrict them to only 140 runs. This

was our first win for the season and gave us a boost mentally for our next wins.

Our second notable win came against Fulham, who were a top 4 side at the time, and we were

mentally prepared for that, we knew that they would be a tough opponent. We played at Payneham

and our local knowledge gave us a slight advantage. James Stagg steered us to victory with a great

knock, getting his first hundred for the season and finishing on 129, hitting 21 boundaries in the

process. We finished on 253 and batted for 72.2 overs. Our general play was excellent, and the

bowlers finished the job restricting Fulham to 222. Duncan Dolling secured 4 wickets with James

Stagg 3. This win did give us some momentum heading into our next game against Unley.

We played Unley with confidence in our ability to secure another win. We won the toss and batted.

Our batsmen went to work on what was a decent deck and put together some great partnerships

which saw us score 261 after 74 overs. James Stagg again shone with the bat, hitting a great 103

which contained 14 boundaries, his second for the year and his eighth overall for the Club. Another

excellent knock by tail ender Lochlan Roberts added 54 valuable runs to the tally. The bowlers dug in

again, and once more Duncan Dolling and James Stagg produced the goods, taking 6/58 and 4/55

respectively. We fielded well, restricted Unley to 202, and got our third, and biggest win of the year.

Although we did not finish where we hoped, we can certainly take away some positives. Firstly

rebuilding, we have some great young talent coming through the ranks and next year is going to be

very competitive and all A grade positions will be scrutinized. Secondly, we came together as a team

as the season progressed and if we continue to build on that foundation we will be well placed for

next season. We have a great core group of players who are always hungry for the win. Thirdly, our

losses were relatively narrow, and, in many games, we often only needed an extra 20‐30 runs to win.

Next season we will need to work on batting in partnerships. This will be our best chance to convert

those small losses into wins.

Our general bowling unit is good and well disciplined, we do however need to not lose

concentration, and always need to be bowling to a plan. If we do this, we will restrict teams even

more. Our fielding has been inconsistent although not bad. There were some dropped catches and

misfields and leading into next year A grade will focus more time on fielding drills, an integral part of

the game and will help restrict teams even further. Some notable fielding mentions must go to

Tristan Rex and Tom Colley, great work in the covers and point.

Our wicket keeper Jake Boerema has performed exceptionally this season, he has been incredible

behind the stumps, and his batting has been to a good standard.


James Stagg has been enormous this season, not only has he scored runs with the bat, but he has

excelled with the ball, and if he can take this confidence and form into next season, he will be a force

to be reckoned with. His leadership on the field and amongst the younger players has been

outstanding. Another notable mention for his remarkable wicket taking abilities is Duncan Dolling –

now an essential cog in the 1st XI, and thanks to Ben Sumby who scored for the A grade.

2nd XI SEASON REVIEW Robbie Westley – Captain

A tough year for a new Skipper. A team that often had six or more teenagers, and another three

blokes around 21 picked to play each week, accompanied by a couple of grizzled veterans, was

always going to have some ups and downs.

The season began with a narrow loss to the eventual premiers of the grade, Marion. However, it

gave a hint of the potential the young blokes playing in the ‘Magoos’ had, but also suggested a

strong emphasis on the form needing to be maintained by Skipper Westley, both to bat up front and

make runs consistently. This promise evolved over the next few games and we went into Christmas

at 3 wins and 3 losses and in the top four. There was a genuine optimism that we could hold that

kind of position.

In that period the skipper Westley led with some elan, he captained well and made plenty of runs –

eventually taking out the competition batting award, young Slo Mo Jo Richter Gilbert announced

himself at Payneham, making 78 not out and then taking 5 for 13 in the next game, performances

that saw him picked in the 1st XI, where a long career beckons. Tom Colley made his 20’s and 30’s

and batted long, before he too found himself in the ones. Lachie Jacobs had a great start and bowled

tight and accurate long spells. It looked pretty good.

However, after Christmas the runs dried up for the Skipper, the team lost Pudge to the ones, along

with a couple of other younger guys, and selections challenges saw us picking some more young

blokes like Jack Davidson, which on one level underscored the inconsistency that the side

demonstrated as we lost all 5 games on the run home. Marty Baker played most of the season and

his leadership support was invaluable to Robbie, especially in the second half of the season.

All that said, with so many young blokes like Slo Mo, Tom, Sam Lucas, Finn March, Connor Kitching,

Jack Davidson and Fraser Town all playing well in some games, and sticking at their game and

training hard, there is scope for hope that the 2nd XI will make an impact going forward next season.

The genuine season highlight was the last minor round game when we played Flinders Park. We

bowled them out for 155, we replied with 127 and with most of the second day to play, we looked to

be under pressure. However, we bowled them out for just 124 with Sam Colley taking a career best

9 for 62 and we suddenly could win outright, needing 157 to win and whilst in the end we fell just 4

runs short, batting one short, it did provide a watershed moment for the younger blokes to

understand that anything was possible.

As noted, the skipper took out the B2 batting award for his season, and really did a good job of

leading the team, ensuring again that the team played the game in the right way and respected the

game.

Thanks to all the guys who represented the 2nd XI this season and we look forward to playing again

next season, with a bit more expectation of making more consistent efforts keeping us in more

games.

3rd XI SEASON REVIEW

The season of 2019/20 will forever be remembered, other than for the obvious health crisis, as “the

season that might’ve been” as we finished third on the ladder, and with no fear of our finals

opposition, we will forever be left wondering how far we could’ve gone. However, rather than

lamenting what could’ve been, it would be remiss of us not to celebrate what was a brilliantly

successful season for the C’s as a team, but also for numerous notable individual achievements.

From a team perspective, 25 players represented the 3rd XI. Whilst a core of 13 players qualified for

finals, the 12 who filled in were no less important to the success of the team. From a special guest

appearance from Craig Dodson in his only SA game on his nationwide wide tour to raise funds for

mental health, to our professional brew master Miller Edginton making his senior debut at the age of

12, each were just as important as any other.

We finished the season with a record of 7 wins (including one outright) and a N/R out of eleven

matches; interestingly a better record than the 2016/17 3rd XI that finished as minor premiers and

played off in the GF. Indeed, a strong indication of the quality of the competition this year. With

twelve innings ‘at bat’, the opposition found the grit and determination of the PCC 3rd XI batting line‐

up extremely difficult to contend with, only managing to bowl them out twice for the entire season!

But it was not just the batting that impressed; the bowlers also played their part bowling the

opposition batsmen out in 7 of their 11 innings!

There were also many individual performances that warrant mentioning. Highlights included three

centuries (and a 96) with the bat and four ‘Michelles’ with the ball.

The adage of “many hands make light work” revealed itself as a truism on and off the field

throughout the season with the evenness of contributions with bat, ball and in the field proving the

real reason for the team’s success this season. However, the season highlight undoubtedly came in

Round 2’s outright win against Woodville Rechabite and proved to be symbolic of the spirit shown

by the 3rd XI; the debut of "Pineapple"!

Round 2 may have been the C's first win of the season (the first of many) and a comprehensive

outright at that, with runs to Evans and Novak, wicket hauls to the Edgintons and Matschy, and catch

of the year to our resident Irishman Lachie Olech, but it was the season debut of the "Pineapple"

that was the real winner. Appearing for the first time in 2019/20, Pineapple first showed its

doubtless talents in the capable hands of the ‘Sleepologist’ himself, Dr Guru. After invoking the

power of the Pineapple for his first attempt, Pineapple did not disappoint. While some ignorantly

suggested it was the beautifully executed caught and bowled by the Skipper, deep down we all knew

it was Pineapple's previously untapped potential finally being unleashed!


But, despite this evident brilliance, we still didn't truly grasp Pineapple's abilities. In an act that trod

the fine line between respect and mockery, Skip called "Pineapple" for the very next ball. Now as we

all know, the Skipper's bowling by itself is simply not capable of wickets in consecutive balls and it

was with this knowledge that the now rampant Cs were to truly have their eyes opened to the might

of the Pineapple. Again, at first glance the ignorant observer could be forgiven for thinking it was the

perfectly executed in swinging yorker that had the Rechabite batsman lamenting the fate of his now

askew middle and leg stump, the Payneham boys were fast becoming awestruck, if not slightly

nervous at what may have been unleashed. It was fast becoming apparent that the Supercoach, Ash

Evans, really had secretly swapped the selection table for a Ouija board. Twice in consecutive balls

Pineapple had been invoked and twice Pineapple had delivered!

Questions were now being asked; could Pineapple really get the Skip a hat trick (God only knows

such a feat is impossible with his abilities alone), could Ash really have unleashed powers hitherto

unknown, who would dare to call out "His" name for a third consecutive ball, would Dan Murphy’s

have enough beer in stock?

As the next Rechabite victim nervously made his way to the wicket (clearly this Pineapple caper was

no longer just a game) it was unclear who or indeed if anyone would dare to call "His" name. At the

top of his mark, Skip cast an eye around the field. Why, he wondered, was the impeccably curated

Devitt outfield suddenly so interesting as all eyes now appeared to be looking for anything of

interest other than the game at hand. Was it just fear of the Pineapple or was it the terrifying

realisation that if anyone called upon "His" now evident power for a third consecutive ball that Skip

might actually claim a hat trick; and who could live with the ramifications of that?

As the new batsman took his guard, a terrifying noise rang out; "Pineapple". What the....... had Skip

just called consecutive Pineapples? Was this even allowed? Suddenly it dawned on all at Devitt that

afternoon. Skip was attempting to use powers unbeknownst to all to help him overcome the

impossible and take a hat trick!

As Skip walked in and eventually broke into the shuffle that is fast resembling Scotty's 'run up', the

trepidation around the ground was palpable. The 'quicker' ball (well obviously it couldn't be a slower

one!!) full and at the stumps, seam grabbing at the well grassed Devitt surface, the ball nips back

and thunders into the pad. The batsman's trapped on the crease; missing off, missing leg, thundering

into middle. A collective cry goes up, but not with the same hysteria expected for a hat trick ball.

Instinctively, they all knew something wasn't right as there was a second sound. A sound not

exclusively dull like the ecstasy of pad only, but coupled with something sharper, the bat!

As the umpire respectfully declined to accept the invitation to give the batsman out, another

realisation dawned around the hallowed Devitt turf. Pineapple was not to be used for individual

gains. What Pineapple had given by way of hope, Pineapple had taken away in a lesson of reality that

we all knew already. Not even the undeniable power of the Pineapple could overcome the equally

undeniable ineptitude of the bowler.

We now knew that Pineapple's powers were only to be used for good; beer and donations to Craig

Dodson's charity (a tale for another time perhaps)!


Pineapple was ‘selected’ to great success (and expense) for every game of the season thereafter

and, when teamed with his partner ‘Spirit Animal’ (yet another tale for another day), proved a more

valuable addition to team morale than any mascot.

So, to all teams who have failed to embrace the Pineapple this year, look around, observe the results

and pray that if you too invoke ‘His’ powers for good, success may also be forthcoming!

The fabulous fighting fourth eleven had another challenging season with the huge variables they faced in terms of selection each week. However, happily for the Club they were led grandly by the dual Wasley Medallist Jiggy Patel who also led the way in runs scored and wickets taken, ultimately taking out the LO4 competition bowling trophy. A good man who plays the game in a spirit that the Club wants to play the game.

The team also had a couple of other stalwart mature performers and leaders who played every game they could in Martin Subramaniam [Lord Donald] and Mike [3 Please] Brister. They each made runs with a consistent inconsistence, although in the end perhaps not as many as they would have liked, and Mike also took the keepers gloves toward the end of the season. A team highlight was seeing the small round man taking a couple of stumpings off Ian 'Scotty' Scott in the last game of the season. Special mention also to Adrian Wright, a proper allrounder, who committed himself to the 4th XI this season, bowled consistently well all year and in a couple of games demonstrated his attacking style and when he made runs, he often made them quickly.

Troy Andrew played a good number of games and always worked hard to make contributions to the team performance – a good lad who improved game on game – watch out next season, and then late in the season we had Adam and Alex join us as they backpacked their way around Australia and what good lads they were! They made runs, took wickets and generally offered great enthusiasm to the games.

Jiggy also acted as a surrogate selector and recruited players when he needed to – Dixit Patel came to fill in and played 12 games, bowled well and is an outstanding fielder! Sam Brister got woken up often by his old man to fill in, often nursing an injury from a happy hour somewhere. Jayden Subramaniam played three games, made runs in all of them, and as importantly he got to play with his old man – and they shared a 100 run partnership in one game which saw our Sir Donald become the Lord Donald as he made a club high score of 58 not out, which Brister suggested could have been 158 had he not hit the ball straight to the fielders so often, and he celebrated with a cold Miller Chill or 4!

In many ways the 4th XI represents the essence of Payneham Cricket Club. They play the game the right way. They genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Whilst they play to win, they care less for the result than the way that they play, and the spirit in which they play. They have fun. As cricketers should. They are only ever one or two regular players away from playing finals each season.

The 4th XI stalwarts like to say that the LO’s is where dreams can come true; our juniors can get a taste of senior cricket and realise they are good enough, fathers can play with their sons [is there anything better?], and they offer young blokes who haven’t played much before an opportunity to start and older blokes – yes you Neil Thompson [our inaugural daughter father selection] ‐ a nice place to play the great game. Bravo.

PAYNEHAM JUNIORS – Boys

Shaun Grant – Junior Program Co‐ordinator

The 2019/20 season saw the introduction of an under 16 ATCA competition and NEJCA under 15 and

17 competitions no longer run. The Payneham Cricket Club were able to field two under 10, three

under 12, one under 14 team and one under 16 team. Unfortunately, the season grand final across

all grades was cancelled due to covid‐19 restrictions. Final ladder positions were determined by

points and percentage prior to the grand final round.

The under 16 team were competitive in many games played albeit finishing 11th on the ladder at seasons end. A close‐knit group managed by Chris Sumby ‐ they can be rightly proud of their on‐field endeavours and the way they conducted themselves against strong opposition. Hamish Towers was an obvious standout making two centuries, 116 and 103 (carrying his bat twice) and finished on 539 runs ‐earning him the batting award for the team. Several players took 10 wickets each for the season. Booth Doley however won the bowling award based on economy rate. Congratulations to Booth for representing ATCA in the under 16’s SAMCA cup and all the under 16 boys and parents who represented the club so well throughout the summer! (Thanks too for Ben Sumby for helping the A‐grade as their official scorer) The under 14 division 2 team was coached by Lochlan Roberts and managed by Richard Moran.

Chris Towers scored 166 runs and Harry Gupta took 11 wickets earning best batting and bowling

respectively for the team. Several new players joined the team as the season progressed. The team

finished strongly, earning second place on the ladder.

The under 12 division 1 team, coached by Trent Launer and managed by Taryn Boyd finished the

season as under 12 division 1 premiers. Captain Alecs Zorzi won the team batting award with 286

runs for the season. Cooper Heffernan won the team bowling award with an outstanding 20 wickets

for the season. It was a very close competition, with a little disappointment finishing first on the

ladder without the opportunity to play the grand final.

The under 12 division 3, Payneham Knights coached by Shaun Grant and managed by Kylie Grant

finished the season strong ending up in 5th place. Levi Storti won the batting award with 235 runs

and Lucas Grant won the bowling award by taking 12 wickets for the season. Every team member

contributed in games with a noticeable improvement across the season from all players.

The under 12 division 3, Payneham Blue coached by Derek Ozga and managed by Jo King made the

semi‐final playoff round, finishing the season in 4th place. Taite Brook, with 388 runs for the season

earnt a well‐deserved batting award for the team and the Graham Vincent consistency award.

Justus Lau also had an exceptional batting season making 260 runs and earned the bowling award by

taking 11 wickets. Payneham Blue won the division 3, T20 competition earning the club a shield.

A relatively young under 10 Red was coached by Jake Boerema and under 10 Blue was coached by

Peter Freeman. Nuwin Wanigatunga earnt both bowling and batting awards for the Red team with

109 runs and 12 wickets for the season. Dean Freeman won the batting award for the Blue team

scoring 225 runs and Fraser Pedersen an outstanding 26 wickets earnt him the bowling award for

the Blue team. A hat trick by Vikum Weerasingha in his first season of cricket is also a great

achievement.


The juniors are a cornerstone of the Payneham Cricket Club. Growth, development and retention of

junior players is important. Initiatives such as whole of club training sessions were held across the

season to develop skills and promote a positive club culture. Proposals for portable roll out pitches

allowing more games to be played at Payneham oval as well as facilitating centre wicket training for

all junior grades were investigated. With the Woolworths Junior Blasters and Masters programs

held at Payneham Oval this season, the club has access to a pool of junior players for 2020/21

season. With these initiatives on the horizon, the following season should be exciting.

PAYNEHAM JUNIORS – Girls

The 2019/20 season saw the continued expansion of the Women’s program at Payneham.

Through the off‐season Payneham further strengthened our agreement with the Kensington Cricket Club, with the movement of players between the 2 clubs Women’s programs. The addition to the agreement enabled players from the Kensington Women’s Cricket Academy to have regular game time via Payneham’s Friday Night U/16 Strikers Teams.

SACA established Spring (Pre Christmas) and Summer (Post Christmas) competitions.

Spring Season

Payneham fielded two teams (Red & Gold) in the Friday night Under 16 competition, with games played in a 20/20 format with additional modified rules to assist with the development of the girl’s skills. Through this season, 19 players represented Payneham with the Red and Gold teams finishing 2nd & 3rd respectively in a 6‐team competition. Of the 19 girls that participated, 6 went on to represent the North Eastern zone, through the SAMCA Cup competition.

Summer Season

Following a review of the numbers and ability of the girls across the Spring competition it was decided to reduce our Friday night underage teams back to one and add an additional team to the ATCA Sunday competition. The girls playing in the Friday night competition did Payneham proud playing off in the Grand Final, but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful on the night.

junior to win the Club batting aggregate.

IN MEMORIAM

Reg May

Reg May never played Cricket at Payneham but made major contributions to the club with his off‐field activities. He first came under notice as a top club man in 1976‐77, when he was awarded the Patrons Trophy for outstanding service.

He was appointed Equipment Officer in 1977‐78, a position he filled with distinction for many years. During the cricket season Reg's Saturdays began at 11.00am and finished at 8.00pm the hours in between being occupied with organising equipment, drinks on the field, afternoon tea, changeroom security and assisting the Secretary with the post‐match sale of pies and pasties. Reg was always one of the first to offer his services for club working bees, and assisting with the organisation of interstate, inter‐association, and Country Carnival games at Payneham Oval. He was an important member of the Catering Committee and his skills as a Chef were well known and appreciated. Reg was a member of the General Committee, and a delegate to the ATCA and PSA.

The majority of Club workers are also players, and as such can enjoy themselves out on the cricket field on Saturday afternoons. Not so for Reg who as a non‐player derived his enjoyment from working for his club off the field and seeing Payneham victorious on the field. Reg was also club Curator at Trinity Gardens Primary School, where he was responsible for pitch and ground maintenance at Devitt and Wellington Ovals.

For his service to the Club Reg was awarded Life Membership in 1991. Reg also served his country through the 2nd World War and was seen proudly marching on ANZAC day and could be found regularly at the Payneham RSL.

Reg was only a few days off his 95th Birthday.

Lance Holmes

A swashbuckling batsman and a very useful bowler Lance played cricket at Payneham for 18 seasons (1961/62 ‐ 1981/82). In that time he played 164 games, compiling 1631 runs and taking 355 wickets.

Through the 1960’s Lance played in the 2nd 3rd & 4th Elevens and with the establishment of the “Old’s & Bolds” he played with this distinguished group of older gentlemen/players that made up the 6th Eleven. Lance also captained the 6th XI in the 81/82 season.

The Holmes family have provided 3 generation of players to the Payneham Cricket Club – Lance, his 2 sons David & Richard, son in‐law the late Bruce Colbourne and grandsons Joseph & Samuel.

RIP Lance.


John Hicks

The Major came to Payneham in 1969 as a scorer/manager for the First XI and never donned the

whites for the club but scored thousands of runs and many wickets. Also, a passionate supporter of

the Sunday Pub Cricket competition, the Major recruited players from Payneham into this Sunday

competition and many a story could be told from these eventful games.

The Major was awarded Life Membership to our club in 1985 and we have obtained the extract from

the Annual Report with the Committee’s recommendation for his election.

“The General Committee has decided to recommend to members at the Annual General Meeting

that John Lewis "Major" Hicks be elected to Life Membership of the Payneham Cricket Club. John's

nickname "The Major" indicates certain military like characteristics in his make‐up, but in this

instance, Major is the operative word, as over the years he has been a Major contributor of his spare

time, to furthering the interests of the Payneham Cricket and Payneham Football Clubs, and the

Payneham Sports Association.

John became Manager‐Scorer of the First XI, in season 1969/70, and last season completed 15 years

in that capacity. He was Club Treasurer from season 1970/71 to season 1973/74 Inc. and Chairman

of the Club in Season 1974/75. John has also served the Club as a member of the General and Social

Committees, as a Club delegate to the A.T.C.A., and the Payneham Sports Association and as Practice

Captain. It is also worthy of note that in the halcyon years of the Beer ticket sales project, which

raised many thousands of dollars for our Club, John Hicks played a leading role in keeping up ticket

supplies to the five sales outlets in that era (mid 1970's).

John was elected to Life Membership of the Payneham Sports Association at their last A.G.M., and

his great contribution to that organisation, has proved of considerable advantage to our Club.
