JUNIOR LEAGUE OF GREENWICH ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018
Dear Friends,
For nearly 60 years, the dynamic and diverse women of the Junior League of Greenwich (JLG) have been shaping the Greenwich community through innovative projects meeting critical needs, and training and developing one another to become leaders and change makers in the community. The 2017-2018 year was a memorable one for the JLG. Some of the highlights include: ■ 225 girls developed skills in self-esteem, decision making, self-expression and assertiveness
through our PositivelyMe! and Positively More programs ■ Over 40 bundles of newborn necessities were delivered to Neighbor to Neighbor ■ 85 literacy kits were prepared for early readers at Family Centers ■ 50 children enjoyed a Night at the Bruce Museum ■ 36fifth-gradeboysparticipatedinBoysAchievingMore,anoutdooradventureprogram
addressing respect, trust, communication, and teamworkMostsignificantly, aprojecteightyearsinthemakingcameto fruition with the opening of the Greenwich Pool in Byram Park in June 2018. The JLG proudly worked to spearhead and fundraise for this incredible recreational resource, which was a public-private partnership between the JLG and the Town of Greenwich. It was supported by hundreds of members of the Greenwich community, and will be a gift to Greenwich for years to come.In addition to the meaningful work we did in the community,
the JLG hosted fundraisers that are both beloved and inspiring to our community. The Enchanted Forest and Touch a Truck returned, to the delight of children and adults alike. In May 2018, the JLG hosted a luncheon with honored guest speaker, Indra Nooyi, then Chairman and CEO of Pepsico, Inc. In addition to over 400 women and men in attendance, 41 students in the Greenwich High SchoolAVID(AdvancementViaIndividualDetermination)programhadtheopportunitytoattendthis lunch and hear Ms. Nooyi’s powerful message. It is thanks to the generosity of our members, friends, and local businesses that we are able to do so much in our community. Aswelookforwardtoour60thyearinGreenwich,wewillcontinuethegoodworkthathasdefinedusfordecades.Withyour continued support, the JLG will continue our legacy of delivering lasting improvements to our community, while promoting volunteerism and developing the potential of women.Sincerely,Elizabeth PeytonPresident, 2018-2019

The Junior League of Greenwich has played a major role in designing and establishing a wealth of services for its community. Much of the work is done in partnership with other community organizations that share a common goal and mission with the JLG. The JLG’s impact on the network of services in Greenwich is widespread. While its role may no longer be directly visible, many of the services that have touched the lives of Greenwich residents were conceived, initiated and implemented by the Junior League of Greenwich. The JLG launches and administers projects for approximately two to ten years, usually turning them over to an existing agency or organization. Some projects become independent entities.

JLG 2018 COMMUNITY GRANT AWARD
Kids in Crisis (KIC) was awarded a grant of $2,500 to expand its existing program providing “Youth Mental Health First Aid Training” to staff at the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich (BGCG). This collaboration will allow KIC to assist the BGCG in supporting the growing need for mental health services for children ages of 6 to 18 that attend the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich.
The “Youth Mental Health First Aid Training” Program is a nationally recognized, evidence-based program designed for adults who regularly interact with young people to teach a five-step action plan to help with mental health issues in both crisis and non-crisis situations. The Kids in Crisis Youth Shelter opened in 1978 thanks to strong support from the Junior League of Greenwich. Since then, KIC has provided critical services to more than 143,000 children and their families in Connecticut.
JLG 2018 COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
The winner of the 2018 Junior League of Greenwich Community Service Award was Christine Kao, a senior at Greenwich Academy. Christine has been involved in the community as Vice President of Safe Rides, a Senior Ambassador for Kids Helping Kids Stamford, working as an Assistant Ice Skating coach for the Skyliners Synchronized Ice Skating Team and as a STEM Camp Counselor at the India Cultural Center. But most impressive was her commitment to teaching flute at Waterside Elementary School. As a visiting concert band teacher for the after school program, Christine led small group instruction in flute every Friday during her high school years. Christine plans to use this award to create a fund for the repair of instruments at Waterside Elementary.
