PRESIDENT’S REPORT
The Community Foundation of Prince Edward Island (CFPEI) continued
to cultivate and enhance its impact and awareness in the non-profit
sector again in 2017. The Foundation is a volunteer driven non-profit
charitable organization that exists to disburse grants from endowments
and flow-through funds with a goal of improving all aspects of
community life in Prince Edward Island.
Our mandate is to stimulate and assist caring Islanders in the delivery of
their charitable giving, both now and in the years to come. We do this
by connecting caring people with causes that matter.
For the first time ever, the Foundation distributed more than $500,000
to a broad range of worthy causes, all on behalf of the outstanding individuals and organizations who
are our Donors.
One factor contributing to The Foundation’s ability to increase its impact in the community is the growth
of its Endowment fund and the investment return it has earned. To this end, the total number of
individual funds in the portfolio increased from 70 to 74, a total of $340,000 in donations was added to
the portfolio, more than $280,000 was withdrawn for granting, and the Fair Market Value grew from
$8,705,734 to $9,556,549 resulting in the portfolio enjoying a pre-fee Return on Investment (ROI) of
11%. The foundation issued a formal request for proposals for the management of its investment
portfolio last year and I’m pleased to report that RBC Wealth Management - PH&N Investment Counsel
was reappointed for another term. Thanks to Jonathan Ross, Chair of our Investment Committee along
with the committee members for such a great job!
While the Foundation is celebrating a significant community impact milestone, we are mourning the loss
of President Steve McQuaid who passed away in January 2017. One of Steve’s favorite Community
Foundation slogans was “Supporting worthy causes on behalf of caring people” and I’m sure he would
be proud of the support the Foundation delivered to his Community last year.
We are most pleased that Steve’s wife Evelyn along with their children have established the Steve
McQuaid Memorial Award to assist non-profit organizations across the Island in strengthening their
efforts and abilities in building Smart and Caring Communities.
One of the larger initiatives the Foundation undertook in 2017 was our participation in The Community
Fund for Canada’s 150th project, a collaborative effort seeded by the Government of Canada and
extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast and matched and delivered locally by Canada’s 191
Community Foundations. Our partnership enabled the awarding of $130,000 to 26 Island community-
based projects. The granting capacity from our own endowments was supplemented by local private
CFPEI President
John Robinson
donors which greatly increased our ability to draw matching dollars from the Canada 150 Fund. Many
thanks to everyone involved in the success of this unique project.
A major initiative led by Marketing Committee Chair Heather Tedford, several board members and staff
were undertaken to design and launch our new website and Facebook presence. Many thanks to all
those involved.
The Community Foundation relies heavily on its volunteer board of directors for input, guidance,
outreach and active involvement. It is my pleasure to recognize two new directors who joined the board
in 2017, Jeff MacKenzie and Rhonda MacPhee and to thank three directors who retired last year, Rod
Nicholson, Paula Foley and Joanne Donahoe. We also wish to remember Steve McQuaid who was serving
as President when he passed away in January as well as Carol Fraser, a faithful board member for many
years who passed away in June.
On behalf of the Foundation, I wish to acknowledge the work of, and thank long time staff person, Marla
MacDonald Gidney as well as long time volunteer and occasional staff person, Jeniene Peake.
A hearty thank-you to our recently hired Fund Development staff person and ED in waiting, Kent Hudson
and all the volunteers who served on various committees and projects throughout the year.
Your dedication and commitment is greatly appreciated and plays a huge role in the success of the
Community Foundation of Prince Edward Island!

2017 EVENTS
Annual Fund-Raising Gala
The Foundation hosted its Annual Gala fundraiser on Sept 8th at Glasgow Hills Golf Club in New Glasgow. A special
event to celebrate our significant community granting milestone and to mix and mingle with friends and patrons
of CFPEI, it was also a sad evening as we joined with Steve McQuaid’s family to pay tribute to our colleague. Two
of Steve’s children, Michelle Dodds & Tim McQuaid, his business partner Paul Chaulk and Tom Davies of the
Community Foundation all shared memories of Steve. Director Pam Borden then announced that the Island
Community Exchange World Café would be held in his honor. This free event will continue Steve’s efforts to
support community groups and strengthen Island communities.
Annual Awards Recognition Reception
Our August 23rd Awards evening saw our largest turnout ever of recipients, family members and friends. This event
recognized and celebrated our 2017 scholarship winners, community grant winners and Canada 150th Fund
recipients. This event is the one time each year where the Foundation publicly showcases to our donors, patrons
and friends the outcomes and impacts of the work we do. Each scholarship, grant or award represents the result
of someone who wanted to help their community in some way. We wish to thank all donors and patrons who
have helped make this happen through their gifts.
Legacy Tea
I was delighted to have the opportunity to welcome a number of invited guests to a Legacy Society social time and
tea at the home of Elaine & Ken MacDonald on Nov 29th. The refreshments and service were outstanding and
there was good interest in the material presented about the Foundation. Thanks to Elaine and her co-hosts and
to board member Pam Borden who helped organize the event.
Island Community Exchange World Café
The first event held under the auspices of the Steve McQuaid Memorial Award was held at the Jack Blanchard Hall
on November 20th which a number of board members and staff attended and participated in. The Café provided
the opportunity for representatives from various non-profit organizations to exchange ideas and discuss issues in
a mini-session type of event where participants rotated through tables where various topics of interest were being
discussed. The discussions were summarized at the end of the session and presented to the assembled by each
table’s coordinator. An enjoyable and productive way to give and receive new ideas on various subjects.
Congratulations to the steering committee of the Steve McQuaid Memorial Award, Steve’s family and everyone
who attended.
2017 NEW FUNDS
Their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Scholarship
The Foundation was pleased to award the first ever Their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
Scholarships to Heather Crane, Micayla Darrach, Kestra Greer and Nathaniel Mason at Government House on
March 6th. The original concept for the creation of an Endowment to fund these scholarships was proposed by
Ms. Mary Dunea who also made a significant donation to launch the fund. We were delighted that Ms. Dunea was
able to travel from Iowa through terrible weather and flight connections to attend and participate in the
scholarship presentations. The Foundation is most grateful for her vision and generosity which will live on as the
scholarships are presented each year. Thank you to Their Honours, Lieutenant Governor H. Frank Lewis and Mrs.
Dorothy Lewis for hosting the event.
THE IMPACT OF FLOW THROUGH SERVICES
Although most of the support provided to scholarship and grant recipients is generated from Endowment Fund
earnings, a significant granting capacity comes from donors using our flow through services. Donors use our flow
through services for a variety of reasons included the desire to remain anonymous, the desire to make one larger
gift for disbursal by CFPEI to a number of causes, the desire to make a gift of shares to an organization not having
its own brokerage account, and for US donors wishing to us the CFPEI IRS status to donate to a Canadian non-
profit organization. In addition to approximately $100,000 in 2017 donations to support the Basilica Bell project,
CFPEI donated a similar amount to other causes on behalf of flow through donors.
