Executive Director ReportWe celebrate 2017 thanks to you, Laurelville’s key stakeholders: donors, volunteers, and staff who have invested time, talent and treasure to power our ship full steam ahead. Reflecting upon the start of our journey together, just two short years ago, the LMCC’s Executive Director search committee and I contemplated how Laurelville might celebrate its upcoming 75th Anniversary. This year, what a blessing it has been to be in the front row leading and helping alongside so many of you as God’s special plans unfold for this special place.

Great news to share! Our 75th anniversary capital pool and welcome center project is well underway. If you haven’t already, won’t you please jump in with

a 5-year pledge or one-time gift to bring this ministry project to fruition? For more information, see inside, or give me a call. I’d love to share details with you personally.

Another exciting 2017 highlight has been the addition of Day Camp. The program was well-received with 45 campers participating. We hope you enjoy reading this 2017 annual report. Please know how much we appreciate your prayers and continued support as we strive to carry forth God’s plan for ministry work through Laurelville.

Warmest regards,

Jeanette Lahm, Executive Director

Board Chair Report2017 was another, in what I pray, is a never-ending stream of good years for Laurelville. It was a year of strong programming and hospitable hosting. It was a year of strong financial performance and another year of generous giving by members and friends of Laurelville to the work that we do together to share God’s munificence.

This good work was carried out by our outstanding staff with leadership from our dynamic executive director, Jeanette Lahm. Careful management allowed us to end the year with a modest cash balance and no short term debt. What a great way to enter our 75th year.

At the Fall Association Meeting, we were able to announce that our 75th Anniversary capital fundraising goal for the construction of a new pool, welcome center and green parking lot was $850,000. Your generous giving has us at 65% of the goal as of this writing. The Board and I thank all of you for your support.

As Board Chair, I will say that it has really been enjoyable to work on this 75th Anniversary Project. The Board and Staff have embraced the plan and the membership has enthusiastically offered support. I have a strong sense that we are in this together because we believe in the mission of this place and want to see Laurelville strengthened for the next 75 years of service. Praise God for blessing Laurelville thus far, and we pray that we will continue to share the shalom of Laurelville for generations to come.

Laurelville | Annual Report 2017 3

After a successful trial run the year before, we officially launched our Day Camp program this summer. With our Program Coordinator, Christina Juliano, leading the way, we saw 45 kids benefit from an exciting and meaningful time at Laurelville. Through this program, campers received a taste of traditional camp activities that in some cases led them to also participating in our residential camp. Some of the beloved activities included: Bible lessons, hiking, swimming, crafts, mini golf, GaGa ball, and much more! Day Camp continues to provide an opportunity for us to expand our youth outreach, build relationships with community members, and be a feeder for Summer Camp. We’re grateful for a successful beginning to what we hope becomes a long-standing Laurelville program.

In the fall, we had another great opportunity to interact with the surrounding community. The Mt.

Pleasant Glass and Ethnic Festival invited Laurelville to create a kids craft area for their September event. Not only did we offer two free crafts, but with the help of the maintenance department, we had a water exploration table where the kids could “go fish.” Offering these free activities to the kids of the community and beyond, proved to be a hit! It was a fun way to let people know about our youth programs and be a blessing to our local neighbors.

It is our desire at Laurelville to continue nurturing and growing our staple programs and to also create new programs, such as Day Camp, where we sense God leading. As always, we’re thankful for our program volunteers, our faithful participants, and for God’s guiding hand.

Program Highlights

Maintenance and GroundsIn 2017, the Meetinghouse received a welcomed upgrade with the addition of high efficiency air conditioning and heat. Many thanks to an anonymous donor who helped with 1/3 of the cost! In addition to the air conditioning and heat, we were able to install a new electrical service panel making the building more safe and efficient, and to top it off, we spruced up the interior with a fresh coat of paint!

Throughout the year, the Maintenance Department continued focusing on freshening up Laurelville’s appearance. The Solarhouse, Guesthouse, and Motel all have new canvases of Laurelville photos bringing a bit of the colorful outdoors into each room. Inside of the Shenandoah, new paneling provided a wonderful “facelift.” The exterior of the Dining Hall received a fresh coat of

Laurelville Chocolate and Vanilla and is looking sharp! Additionally, parking lines have been added around the campus to assist with more efficient parking, and a few bright high-efficiency lights have been installed at the Solarhouse to make guests arriving at night feel more welcome and safe. There were many behind-the-scenes upgrades that continue to help the maintenance and housekeeping staff be good stewards of time and resources. For instance, a new floor scrubbing machine cleans the gym floor in 1/3 of the time, and our new washers and dryers in housekeeping complete a cycle in 30-40 minutes as opposed to 70-80 minutes. We continue to be mindful of the many blessings the Lord has given Laurelville in order to serve so many people each year!

Fourty-five children participated in our new Day Camp program last year.

Hosted MinistriesNew Jerusalem Church has been hosting Jacob’s Creek Family Camp at Laurelville for over 20 years. This year, they renamed their event ‘Jacob’s Creek Family Retreat’ because, “Over the years, you keep upgrading your facilities! Air conditioning in the Dining Hall and Meetinghouse, WiFi, and the list goes on and on. Laurelville is so much nicer than camping!”

“Our church and our families have been blessed for this time set-aside to reflect and focus on our spiritual lives. With today’s distractions,

it is hard to keep the faith focus in our regular lives. Retreating to Laurelville has been a multi-generational blessing for campers from 2 weeks to 92 years old.”

“We are thankful for Laurelville’s beautiful natural surroundings, great food, amenities like the pool, and ease of coordinating with Brenda.”

Submission from Jim and Julie Uber, 10+ year coordinators who's family has coordinated for 20+ years.

Laurelville | Annual Report 2017 5

Seventy-five years ago, Laurelville was founded as a peaceful haven for Mennonite youth and families. Today, Laurelville is a retreat center serving over 18,000 guests annually from varying organizations and denominations. To enrich our mission of serving with Christ-like hospitality, this capital project fulfills aspects of Laurelville’s Master Plan goals including:

· Replace failing 75+ year old swimming pool · Increase bather load/usability · Create ADA accessible/zero-depth entry · Add waterslide and sprays to enhance swimming fun · Heat the water from current (icy!) creek temperature for appeal to all ages · Attract new visitors to the Laurel Highlands · Serve as a community resource · Increase hospitality and safety with Welcome Center near entrance · Replace aged bathhouse facilities with family-friendly, fresh changing facilities · Increase “green” infiltration parking · Limit and re-direct drive-through traffic for safety · Add snack bar to feed guests outside of meal time

6 Laurelville | Annual Report 2017

Volunteers bless Laurelville in so many ways. In 2017, three couples and one family joined our team for multi-week assignments; two of whom came via Mennonite Mission Network’s SOOP (volunteer program). Long-term volunteers included: Ralph and Deb Muensterman (former summer staff) along with their children Lucas and Lily, Dale and Jan Stebbins, George and Mae Stoltzfus, and John and Ginny Veeder.

Another 2017 highlight includes a new partnership forged with the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit (WIU). (6-8) WIU students spend one afternoon each week during the school year gaining work experience as they rotate through various departments. Students, WIU job training director, and Laurelville staff are enjoying this new arrangement.

Thank you, 2017 Volunteers, for the endless ways you contribute to Laurelville’s ministry!
