  • Libraries assist students with learning and access to information. As the needs of the classroom have changed, we have enhanced our library services to meet student learning outcomes.

I am honored to serve as the Dean of Libraries and Academic Success Centers, having previously worked as Associate Dean of the Central Campus Academic Success Center. The libraries and Academic Success Centers have a vital role in supporting students during their college career.

Here are a few ways we are serving the college community:

    • To better serve students, we have renovated spaces on the first and second floor of the University/College Library to provide convenient spaces for studying and collaborating.

    • We continue to review ways to improve our technology and how students access information.

    • Faculty Librarians are embedded in Broward College’s eight guided pathways to provide library instruction.

    • Senior Curriculum Support Specialists are also engrained in the eight guided pathways to provide academic support services.

    • Our library staff serves our college community with traditional library services such as information literacy, research appointments, and technical services.

    • The Academic Success Centers continue to provide tutoring and other curriculum support services.

Every semester our department helps equip students with tools and techniques to succeed. I am grateful to have a team that is talented and ready to assist students with achieving academic success.

    Message from the Dean

Dr. Monique BlakeDean, Libraries and Academic Success Centers

    1

  • The University/College Library (UCL) hosted the Genocides of the 20th Century exhibit in our facility during the 2018 spring term (January through April). The exhibit was created by Memorial de la Shoah of Paris, France, and our colleagues at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) coordinated its housing at Central Campus. The exhibit includes a comparative study of the Armenian, Jewish and Tutsi genocides and it attracted tours from local high schools as well as visits from our own college students, faculty and staff.

Broward College (BC) and FAU are developing co-branding projects for the Central/Davie Campus to ensure our students know the UCL is here to serve students from both institutions. In January 2018, the UCL was co-branded with BC and FAU logos on the entrance doors and we have new BC/FAU floormats greeting guests as they enter the building.

At FAU’s Annual Broward Achievement Awards on March 30, 2018, former Dean, Libraries and Academic Success Centers, Dr. Sunem Beaton-Garcia, representing BC, was recognized with an Unsung Hero award for BC’s partnership and commitment to the university community.

The UCL held focus groups in spring 2017 with various students, faculty and staff of BC and FAU to discuss ways to improve the library space. Based on feedback, areas of the first and second floors were remodeled to better accommodate student needs. UCL renovations took place during summer 2018 (May through August) and the following changes were made:

    • Reference was moved from the west side of the lobby to Room 164 on the east side of the lobby. It includes a new Reference Desk where patrons can receive help from a librarian; a one-on-one research appointment room; our Leisure and Ready Reference collections; and a quiet study zone.

    • The former Reference Desk now houses our Tech Assistants group who assist students with printing or other technical needs they may have.

    • FAU’s Computer Lab was moved into Room 104, providing additional space and computers specifically for FAU students.

    • Room 162 is a new Library Instruction Room where our librarians conduct classes with students. The room is equipped with 25 computers.

    • The Tutoring Lab moved from Room 146 into larger, newly redesigned space inside the Academic Success Center in Room 234. The lab offers student support in modern foreign languages, economics, business, and biological sciences, as well as services specifically tailored to meet student accessibility needs. Software for Computer Science and other programs is also available.

  • • Room 146 was split into two rooms - Room 146 houses a collaborative classroom and Room 146A houses our Audio Visual staff.

    • We have six new rooms in the open area to the rear of the first floor:

    - A multimedia lab providing computers with design software for FAU or BC students studying graphic design or working on design projects.

    - A collaborative study room which is equipped with a computer and large monitor to work on projects with a group.

    - Four rooms for individual booking which can be used to practice speeches or record audio.

    RENOVATIONS CELEBRATIONS:

South Campus President Dr. Rolando Garcia, who oversees BC Libraries, and Dean Monique Blake hosted a UCL Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on September 20, 2018 to celebrate our newly renovated spaces. Executive leadership from BC and FAU were in attendance as well as key people responsible in managing the project to completion. At the conclusion of the ceremony, Honors College students led guests on tours of the newly renovated spaces.

Dean Monique Blake and the BC Libraries Administration Team hosted a Faculty and Staff Appreciation Lunch to thank employees from the UCL, Central Academic Success Center, Facilities/Maintenance and the BC and FAU Technology groups for their many hours of work toward our renovations.

RetirementsAssociate Dean of Technical Services Rich Ackerman retired in June 2018 after more than seven years with the UCL. Rich was an invaluable member of our administrative team, overseeing the acquisition of databases, negotiating library contracts, helping set cataloging standards and serving on numerous project teams for a variety of library organizations and consortiums on behalf of BC. He served as a human “book” during multiple annual Literary Festivals held at the UCL and shared his expertise and passion for growing orchids with students, faculty and staff.

Technical Services Librarian Jan Rothhaar retired in August 2018 after 31+ years at the UCL. Jan was responsible for the cataloging standards used to describe our holdings and managed the workflow around the acquisition and implementation of library

materials and resources. She and her Technical Services team ensure students and faculty can find what they are looking for when they use the college library catalog, a job that often goes unnoticed, but is vital to student and faculty success.

    FACULTY AND STAFF NEWS

  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, CONTINUING EDUCATION, FACULTY GRANTS AND AWARDS

In July 2017, Faculty Librarian Simone Williams conducted training for librarians at Broward College’s International Center at Sampoerna University in Jakarta, Indonesia, via Blackboard Collaborate.

Faculty Librarians Victor Lawrence and Cristy Moran published a peer-reviewed article with Christopher Jordan, a North Regional/ Broward County librarian colleague, for The Reference Librarian. The article is based

on their October 2017 presentation at the Florida Association of College & Research Libraries’ annual conference about how they have partnered to provide programming

for both college students and public patrons through the unique joint-use partnership at the North Campus. The article, “Experience from the Field: Programming in a Joint-Use Partnership Library,” was published in May 2018 and is available in print or online through BC Library’s electronic resources.

Simone Williams presented to BC faculty librarians on accessibility and ADA compliance for library sites (LibGuides) in November 2017.

Former Dean, Libraries and Academic Success Centers, Dr. Sunem Beaton-Garcia was co-leader of a team responsible for awarding $100,000 in grants to faculty supporting innovative pedagogy. The funding was granted because of BC’s ranking as a Finalist with Distinction for the 2017 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the nation’s preeminent recognition of high achievement and performance in America’s community colleges. Faculty were invited to submit proposals with their creative ideas for teaching students. Faculty Librarian Lori Albrizio participated on the judges panel and grant recipients were announced in November 2017. Faculty Librarians Chris Casper, Andrew Dutka, Kristin Kroger, Elena Lazovskaia-Hall and Simone Williams were among the Aspen grant winners and presented posters highlighting their projects at BC’s 2018 LEAD Conference - Professional Development Day held in February 2018.

Our Aspen grant winners were participants of the following teams:

    • Contextualizing with GIS: Julie Mura, Professor, Geography Chris Casper, Faculty Librarian This project integrates Geographic Information System

(GIS) software and information literacy to provide innovative ways for faculty and students to learn about their local, national, and global community. This pilot project introduces GIS mapping technology in teaching and learning for GEA2000 and EVR1001 courses.

    • Empirical Rules the World: Promoting Graphic Novels and Information Literacy in the STEM Classroom:

Mitzi Fulwood, Assistant Professor, Mathematics Elena Lazovskaia-Hall, Faculty Librarian Simone Williams, Faculty Librarian Graphic novels have become increasingly acceptable

in libraries and classrooms. Unfortunately, very little has been done to promote this instructional tool in the higher education or STEM classroom. This project determined if graphic novels and information literacy improved student success in the college statistics classroom. The grant project culminated with select Pathway to Statistics students presenting their research posters at the Student Research Showcase at Central Campus in April 2018.

    • Student Research Initiative Project (SRIP): Kristin Kroger, Faculty Librarian Elena Lazovskaia-Hall, Faculty Librarian Nathalie Franco, Assistant Professor, Behavioral Science Andrew Dutka, Faculty Librarian (Rich Ackerman, Associate Dean of Technical Services,

provided advisement) This project helped students conduct academic

level research and present their findings via poster presentations. SRIP proposed to help students succeed through a program of targeted research workshops, equipment and supplies to print posters and inclusion of work in the Seahawk Scholar Repository. The grant proposed a pilot program with the Honors College colloquium and plans to scale the project to collaborate with CTEL and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) program.

The grant-winning SRIP team, led by Faculty Librarian Andrew Dutka, seized the opportunity to collaborate and assist faculty winners with creating posters to display their project research and information. Each grant-winning team was assigned a personal librarian who offered one-on-one assistance with all aspects of their poster creation.

Associate Dean, Public Services Suzette Spencer and Faculty Librarian Simone Williams presented Open Educational Resources (OERs) information to BC faculty in December 2017.
