Chairperson’s Note

In 2018 the Committee built on the foundations of 2017 running new events, while continuing to run the Junior AviationNetworking Series events, Career Slingshots and attended various industry events. We have welcomed new Committee membersand Industry Committee members who help us develop and grow the association. We have expanded our sponsorship to severalcompanies, while having the continued support from our long-term sponsors.

Overall, 2018 was a year of significant development for the association, in which progress was made in many areas. Later in theyear, we established Ireland’s first and largest Aviation Career Expo with the support from both our sponsors and other industrymembers. The Career Expo featured 35 exhibitors and had over 450 attendees, showing keen interest and growth in aviationtalent in Ireland. Despite all of these achievements in 2018, however, greater impetus will still be needed across all of ourobjectives in the upcoming year to keep up this momentum.

In 2019, we will continue to grow and achieve our goals to promote aviation in Ireland and beyond by expanding our events tothe Shannon Region, continue the successful Career Expo, develop and expand our membership platform, participate ininternational industry events and more.

I wholeheartedly believe in IASA’s mission of bridging the gap between students and the aviation industry. IASA is here tosupport students and industry. Aviation is proof that given the will, we have the capacity to achieve the impossible.

I would like to thank all Committee members, Non-Executive Committee members, and Industry Advisory Committee membersfor their work, guidance and support. Especially, to all our sponsors who has been tremendously supportive and helpful in 2018.

We look forward to continuing our work over the next 12 months and developing new initiatives along the way.

Treasurer’s Report

76

For the year ended 28 February 2019, the Irish Aviation Students’Association (IASA) has benefitted financially from repeat sponsors, newsponsors and the introduction of the Career Expo.

The main driver of the IASA success continues to be the motivatedcommittee whereby collectively through their efforts demonstrate tothe industry the need for a greater student-industry connection for thenext generation of aviation talent.

Notably, IASA has continued to garner the trust and support frominaugural sponsors whilst also expanding our reach to new supportwithin financial services and aviation engineering.

Financially, the Association is in a strong position going into the2019/2020 year. There are plans to further expand our StudentEngagement reach nationally, and to attend Industry events both inIreland and abroad to enhance existing relationships and develop newones. These plans will be supported by the increased capital available asa result of increased income and decreased expenditure.

We continue to analyse all expenditure to maximise the benefit for allstakeholders. We will take further advantage of digital technologies toreduce travel and printing costs and to reach new audiences.

Marketing

Overview

20

• 2018 has been a productive and a successful year for IASA and the marketing department. IASA's social media and online presence have experienced positive growth across all platforms, with Instagram becoming one of the leading social media channels over the course of the year.

• The Student Engagement Team, along with the Marketing Team, continued to release a monthly newsletter to our ever-growing student database. This group did take a hit due to GDPR, however our open rate dramatically increased with an increase in genuine readers signing up to the newsletter. The average open rate is approximately 50%.

• Additionally, the IT department has redesigned the website to further represent the IASA brand and will continue developing the site to meet the dynamic requirements of the association.

• 2018 saw IASA continue to create promotional video material with the creation of videos to showcase the Career Expo in October 2018.

• 2018 saw the marketing team evolve with some members standing down to allow new members and fresh ideas. The Marketing team at the end of 2018 comprised of Aaron Gilmartin, Simon Moloney, Loughlan O'Brien and Elizabeth Shields.

• Our aim for 2019 is to increase our online audience by a minimum of 30% overall.

• In addition, video content is something that the IASA committee are keen to continue to grow and share with its online audience and its members as it proved to get the most organic engagement.

• The IASA website has continuously improved over the years. The IT and Marketing department is working to develop our website further and we aim to have this completed by the end of Q3 2019.

Eventbrite Ticket Sales

We continued to maintain a 100-person limit and had a sell-out event. The attendance did not reflect the number of tickets sold and we believe there were a number of factors for this including the time of year, but most notably the international sporting events that clashed with the event. This was noted and will be considered for future events.

Career Expo Evaluation Results

Background

27

This survey was carried out to get feedback on the first ‘Career Expo’that was conducted by Irish Aviation Students’ Association (IASA) onthe 19 September 2018. The ‘Career Expo’ had exhibitors from all areasof the aviation industry to make future pioneers aware of theopportunities and benefits of the rewarding aviation industry.Attendees also had opportunities to interact, build contacts and seekadvises from the current leaders of this industry.

Objectives

One of the main objective of the ‘Career Expo’ is to generate morecontact between the students and the aviation industry, so as toincrease knowledge on the skills and talents required for students to besuccessful in the aviation industry. The exhibitors also get to meet thefuture generation of industry professionals while they can advertisetheir graduate programmes and internships.

Method

A questionnaire (Appendix 1) was distributed to each exhibitor, whichwas requested to fill out at the end of the exhibition. This gave aresponse percentage of 63%.

The response we received from the 63% is given in the Career Expo Appendix andcan be regarded as genuine as nearly all of the respondents stated that they werefully satisfied the running of the event with few exhibitors dissatisfied with thedemographic of attendees and felt that lunch should have been provided.

In Fig. 4 we can see that 96% of the attendees would be happy to exhibit againwhile 4% would prefer to have a more focused event for third level and graduatestudents only.

The price of a stand was criticised in some of the surveys of being slightlyexpensive and in some surveys, exhibitors suggested a possible 20% reduction inprice, while some exhibitors said they would be happy to pay €500-€550 for astand.

Main Findings

It is clear from the surveys that the event was a success. Exhibitors were verysatisfied with the overall running of the event and the majority were satisfied withthe interaction they had with attendees at the event.
