The Kulture Journey
“Wow!” … what a ride it’s been for Kulture in 2019 alone. First, allow me to take you on our Kulture Journey.
2016
▪ In September 2016 we started off as Freestylerz 7s. We had 15 boys playing in the U12 grade in the BJRU Competition at Sunnybank and Logan Saints Rugby Union Clubs. Eight of these boys are still with us today, now playing as U15s.
2017
▪ In 2017 we increased to two U13 7s squads consisting of 24 players playing once again in the BJRU 7s Comp but this time heading west to the Kenmore Rugby Club. At the end of that season, co-founders Moez and Michelle Wiremu decided to move on. The name Freestylerz belonged to them so out of respect for them both, we decided a name change was needed. Hence the creation of “Kulture 7s”.
2018
▪ In 2018 we grew to 6 teams (1x U10s, 3xU11s and 2xU14s boys’ teams). With 66 players registered with Kulture we entered the Inaugural Logan Saints Rugby Union Club Summer 7s Comp. During the season it was unfortunate that we had to turn many players away as our teams were playing at capacity. It was evident that 2019 for Kulture was going to be big!
2019
▪ 2019 did not disappoint! This year has been huge. Playing once again in the Logan Saints 7s Competition, we entered with 14 squads and a total of 156 registered players.
▪ In 2019 we were joined by the newly formed Kulture Kilikiti (Cricket) Kings and Kweens who represented us in an Inaugural Samoan Kilikiti Tournament held in August.
2019 Highlights
▪ The recent announcement of seven U15 Kulture players being selected to represent QLD at the National Youth Rugby 7s Tournament being held 30 November 2019
▪ The establishment of our first girls’ squad, the “U13 Kulturettes”. ▪ Entering our teams for the first time in a one-day tournament (Brizvegas 2019). 12-Strong, playing up
a year, went through all 5 pool games undefeated but unfortunately lost in the Semi-Finals. Congratulations to the Kulturettes on making the Grand Final. Neither were winners but both teams put Kulture on the 7s circuit radar.
▪ The U13s and U10s Tour to New Zealand in September 2019. Their international tournament experience, making new friends and they came home with great memories. The U13s also took out the award for Best and Fairest at the NZ Junior Rugby Tournament in Taupo – well done boys!
▪ The U15s tour to Hong Kong in April 2019 – touring experience. ▪ Kulture Golf Day in February at the Meadowbrook Golf Club.

Favourite Moments
▪ Watching our little ones take the field each Friday evening and seeing the passion that they bring to their game, as well as the Sunday morning trainings.
▪ The heartfelt commitment all our Coaches and Managers have put into their teams. ▪ As first time Rugby 7s players, seeing the Kulturettes and our younger girls hitting the fields and
growing in confidence each week.

▪ The Committee for your tireless work throughout the year – Kylie Matuauto, Chanelle Siala, Anita Tugaga (Treasurer) and special thanks to the person who continues to hold us together Leigh Maugatai our Secretary. I'd also like to acknowledge Tommy Way and Nate Crofts who had to step away part way through the year because of personal commitments.
▪ In addition, my thanks to Alicia Paurini-Afuie for her work behind the scenes – policy creation, strategic planning, funding applications, running social media, setting up the website and coordinating the 2019 player registrations just to name a few – thank you for your tireless work and support.
▪ All our Rugby 7s and 15s touring Coaches, Managers, Assistants, Support Staff ie linesman, water runners, etc – without your commitment and dedication to your teams we would not be in the position we are today. Please accept this as my personal thanks to each of you.
▪ To all Parents, family and friends – for the time you’ve put into getting your child/children to weekly practices and game nights, thank you for your huge support. I’ve tried to get around and meet as many of you as I could during the season. Please know that I am very appreciative for all that you do for Kulture.
▪ To all our Kulture youth, I cannot tell you how proud I am to see you all continuing to blossom and love the game of 7s. The main thing we have always said from the start is, and continues to be “Enjoy yourselves, listen to your coaching staff and get out there and be the best that you can be”. Thank you, kids, – I feel so privileged to have been a part of your journey into 7s.
Looking Ahead
We look forward to sharing several exciting ventures we are planning for Kulture over the next two years. Keep an eye out for these! In closing, thank you for being a part of Kulture. It doesn’t matter what part you played, whether it was large or small, we’re all on this journey together. Let’s head into 2020 full steam ahead.
