1 Letter from our Founderand Chairperson

Through our more than 50 alliances we kept a very busy program in 2018. From a Financial Access Fair with our friends from St Jerome HANDS Community Center and the Mexican Consulate in NY to “Tacause:Tacos for a cause” with City Harvest and Alida Boer, a Financial Education Week in Upstate NY in collaboration with Agri-Business Child Development, the Financial Inclusion and Technology conference, our very own “Run for Qualitas” event, and a Financial Access Fair in Stamford, Connecticut with Building One Community.

Our 10th anniversary had an incredible closing celebration with a Financial Inclusion and Technology Conference in collaboration with White & Case’s Hispanic Affinity Group, and an event to celebrate with all those who have contributed to Qualitas’ accomplishments during these 11 years. My special gratitude to Rosario Marin and Cesar Costa, who accompanied us during both of these events.

Amid the difficult challenges of our community, we continued this year bringing our program“Get Ready: Migratory process and my money,’’ our initiative designed to alleviate the fear and uncertainty felt by many immigrant families due to the changing immigration laws and policies.

As always I want to thank our Board and Committee members for their great commitment and support.

Qualitas of Life Foundation celebrated its 11th anniversary in 2018, and our mission has become more relevant than ever; To provide basic financial education to Hispanic individuals and their families, in order to foster their financial security and improve their standard of living. Today we can proudly say that more than 13,500 families have benefited from our hard work.

DEAR FRIENDS AND QUALITAS FAMILY,

This year, we welcomed Maria Leticia Ossa Daza and Maria Eugenia Sidaoui!

Moreover, on behalf of our Board, I want to thank our staff members, who contributed enormously to Qualitas of Life’s success, and to our facilitators and volunteers, who make things happen in the places we deliver our programs and services.

My heartfelt thanks to White and Case for hosting us for one more year, and to all of our donors and supporters for believing in building a better world for all. We look forward to your continued support and partnership as we navigate the organization to the next level. I promise you: the best is yet to come!

With enormous gratitude,

MARCELA ORVAÑANOS, Founder and Chairperson.

5 2018Milestones

On March 23, we partnered with the General Consulate of Mexico in New York and St. Jerome HANDS Community Center to bring a Financial Access Fair to the Latino community in the Bronx.

More than 140 people received financial services and counseling during the event that was held in the Bronx. In addition, workshops and information sessions were held on taxes, remittances, and banking systems, among other topics.

5.1 FINANCIAL ACCES FAIR AT ST. JEROME HANDS COMMUNITY CENTER

The Financial Access Fair was part of the Financial Education Week that every year is organized by the General Consulate of Mexico in New York. Different financial services providers participated in the event, including Mexicana Solutions, Neighborhood Trust Federal Credit Union, US Alliance Financial, Lower East Side People Federal Credit, Spring Bank, Popular Community Bank, Condusef and Profeco.

On April 28 and 29, we held our yearly Train the Trainers during which 10 new members were instructed and ongoing training was given to current facilitators. In 2018, we had a 30 person facilitator team, who were from many countries in Latin America (Mexico, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Guatemala, Ecuador, Chile, Puerto Rico, among others) and from the US.

Marcela Orvañanos, our founder and president, and Surey Miranda, a former Qualitas’ facilitator, joined our Train the Trainers to provide expertise and tips on how to better deliver our financial education program and engage with our participants.

5.2 TRAIN THE TRAINERS

“I wanted to come to this fair because I was interested in understanding the different banking services I can choose from, and I also learned about remittances, money transfers, and new programs that give more benefits to our relatives in Mexico.” Adolfo Moreno

Qualitas of Life Foundation partnered with City Harvest to host ‘Tacause: Tacos for a Cause’, a fundraising event that took place on May 20 at Tacombi Empire State Building, and in which over $46,000 was raised to benefit the financial and food security of the Latino community in New York City.

More than 150 people attended the festive event, where the band Gasoline Tequila performed and a silent auction took place to raise funds that will go towards programs operations for both organizations.

5.3 TACAUSE

“I came to New York City about 4 or 5 years ago, and it wasn’t easy, but it can’t even compare to what our fellow Latino brothers and sisters go through when they come to this country. And as Latinos, we have to help them, that’s why we came with the idea to organize this event to raise funds and help our Latino communities throughout the work City Harvest and Qualitas of Life do” Alida Boer, founder and CEO of Maria’s Bag Inc, said during the event. She is also a member of City Harvest Board and was the chair of ‘Tacause: Tacos for a cause’

In collaboration with Agri-Business Child Development (ABCD), we held the Upstate Financial Education Week, which took place from July 16 to 20. Throughout this week, Qualitas of Life Foundation provided the program “Get Ready: Migratory Processes and my Money” in five of ABCD’s locations in the Northwest area of New York: Fredonia, Lockport, Albion, Red Creek and Williamson.

200 families participated in this program, which provides the tools and information about the rights and responsibilities regarding the money of our community, as well as how to safeguard assets and personal finances during any eventuality or life-changing events.

Within the framework of collaboration between the Consulate General of Mexico in Boston and Qualitas of Life Foundation, we provided two financial education workshops in Plainfield, Vermont on July 21 during the Mobile Consulate services (Consulado Sobre Ruedas).

This conference, which was part of the Qualitas of Life 10th Anniversary Celebration, focused on the importance of financial education and access to technology as a bridge for financial inclusion for the underbanked Hispanic community in the U.S.

The conference featured Rosario Marin, 41st Treasurer of the United States, as its keynote speaker. Along with

5.6 FINANCIAL INCLUSION AND TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE

Mrs. Marin, the conference featured guest speakers and panelists from Fintech, several non-profits, and several financial service providers: Jose Quinonez, Founder and CEO of Mission Asset Fund; Mercedes Garcia, VP and Senior Business Leader for Community Relations at MasterCard; Carlos Armando Garcia, Founder and CEO of Finhabits; Jake Peters, Co-Founder and CTO at PayPerks; Mae Watson Grote, CEO of the Financial Clinic; and David S. Qualitas of Life Foundation celebrated its 10 Anniversary with a community event at Tacombi Empire State Building on September 23.

With this event, we brought all the Qualitas Family together: beneficiaries and their families, facilitators, donors, compadres and comadres, as well as allied organizations, who have all helped us achieve our mission.

To celebrate 10 years of accomplishments, we invited César Costa, Mexican actor and Qualitas’ Ambassador, as our special guest. We also had a musical performance from Rana Santacruz, who had the attendees dance with his Mexican bluegrass and Irish mariachi music.

5.7 COMMUNITY EVENT

More than 75 people received financial services and advice during our Financial Access Fair that took place in Stamford, CT on October 27, which we co-organized with Building One Community.

Through the fair, attendees were able to open savings and checking accounts, obtain pre-approval for credit and business loans, gain information about retirement, and tax return preparation from financial services providers such as Members Credit Union, Bank of America, US Alliance Financial, Finhabits, AARP, SCORE, the General Consulate of Mexico in New York.

Alida Boer, founder and CEO of Maria’s Bag Inc, was our special guest in this event, who talked about entrepreneurship for Latino immigrants in the United States.

Alejandro, one of the attendees to the fair, told us that the financial access fairs are a great way to help the community: “Every day, our community is going through financial problems and we need the help of specialized people, these kind of fairs motivate people to come and look for advice because they do not know, and to ignore is the worst mistake that can happen to our community. These type of events should be done often.”

5.8 FINANCIAL ACCESS FAIR IN STAMFORD, CT

It is an honor for me to participate in Qualitas of Life’s celebration. I feel very grateful and very proud to be a part of the Qualitas family- Cesar Costa, Qualitas’ Ambassador.

Qualitas of Life Foundation participated in several panels along the year. Susana Camarena, Executive Director, was a panelist at “Engaged Forum 2018” organized by the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce. Our Education Coordinator, Nilbia Coyote, participated as moderator at the “Second Annual Summit on Latin@s in New York City (SoL-NYC 2018)” in May; and was a panelist at the “Disrupting Racial and Ethnic Disparities’” forum hosted by AARP New York, Hostos Community College and the Hispanic Federation in October. Lastly, Qualitas of Life Foundation participated — thanks to its facilitator Pily Quintanilla — at the “Empowering our communities to make smarter financial decisions” panel organized in December by Mastercard.

Team Qualitas raised $2,255 and took the streets of Manhattan to participate in the 5K run “Abbott Dash to the Finish Line” on November 3 to raise funds to benefit the Financial Education of the Latino community.

Team Qualitas was formed by Qualitas’ volunteers, facilitators, our staff, friends and family who joined forces to fundraise and help us expand our financial education program to 75 Hispanic immigrant families.

We can’t express enough how lucky we feel to have such an amazing team as part of the Qualitas’ family.

6 Testimonies

Eli participated in our workshop at the start of the summer of 2018. She was particularly interested in our Family Financial Plan which is included in “Get Ready: Migratory process and my money’’ and has an emphasis on what to do to prepare for a possible departure from the country. In fact, she revealed to us that she was a victim of the supposed “10 Year Law,” which would most likely lead to her and her family becoming subject to deportation in the future. According to several community organizations partnered with Qualitas, many Latino immigrant families have been victims of this scam in recent years, and eventually they will have to face a possible deportation.

Eli is a clear example of the above. Although this process, which actually corresponds to the immigration process “Deportation Removal,” can take years, during this time immigration authorities provide to applicants work permits. However, there comes a time when a judge issues a final decision, and this one is hardly positive for the family. Eli, after taking our workshop, turned to her lawyers and faced the real consequences with more resources.

Later on she informed us that “at least now I know what will happen and how to prepare ourselves.” In this way, she and her family are planning an eventual forced return to Mexico. All of their accounts are in order, they are saving and thinking about their future return to Mexico in a positive way. Among her options is starting a business there with the money she saved. They, like many other families with children born in the United States, find themselves considering the possibility that their older children remain in the United States, so that, in her case, one of her kids has access to medical insurance which is important for their special needs.

“Joining Qualitas of Life as a facilitator was a unique opportunity to work with the Latino immigrant community settled down in New York City and make a difference by providing basic financial education. After more than thirteen years of working with migrants in Mexico, Guatemala, and Ecuador, I moved to the US and realized how important was for migrants to learn to navigate the financial system in order to succeed in their personal goals. Not an easy task for someone who is not even used to managing bank accounts or any other financial service in their home country. Therefore, Qualitas appeared as a great professional opportunity to me. During the last year, I coordinated “Family Forward” program. This is an initiative led by Mercy Center in partnership with Qualitas, where families receive comprehensive services focus on education, mindfulness, and financial literacy issues. As Qualitas facilitator, I really enjoyed teaching the 8-week while having the chance of building up a close relationship with the participants based on trust as a foundation to follow up on their needs and goals throughout the individual training session. Later on, working individually with the participants, I felt honored of working in a very rewarding environment helping them to set up their financial goals and break them up into little steps in order to reach it.

FACILITATOR

I would say that the greatest part of working with Qualitas is that in every workshop or individual session is totally different because there is always something new to learn. This makes me feel committed to do my best in preparing myself and be able to deliver the best possible service because the participants deserve it”. Fernando Valencia

Fernando Valencia

“Being a board member of Qualitas is an extremely rewarding activity for me. It is a lot of work, and it is not always easy, but it is always fulfilling. From helping to make strategic decisions, to supporting the team and seeing the results in the community, I work hard to help and get the satisfaction of seeing the impact that we make. Some of my favorite moments are graduation ceremonies. Seeing the look of pride on the faces of the graduates, many of whom have never graduated from any type of program in their lives, and the sense of community in the classroom, fills my heart with pride. Many are struggling, to be sure, but they are building the American dream, step by step, in small classrooms around the city. Our students represent the future of our community and our country, and it is my great honor to do my small part to help give them an important tool for success - understanding how they can make their money work for them. With financial freedom comes security, opportunity, and a better future for our entire community”. - Leigh Rovzar, Qualitas’ Board Member.
