ANNUAL REPORT
2018/19
Women on Waves with Layne Beachley, Clifton Beach.
Phantom Coast Classic, Devonport.
PRESIDENTS REPORT.
Surfing Tasmania has continued to grow with another great season of events and activities across
the state from Bruny Island, Tasman Peninsula , Scamander and Marrawah.
Surfing Tasmania’s state-wide strategy to roll out with more events and coaching in all regions has
been successful with the inaugural Phantom Coast Classic in Devonport and the NW Junior Titles to
come. National coaches Martin Dunn and Samba Mann visited for weekend coaching camps at
Scamander and Clifton.
The Women in Waves event at Clifton Beach Surf life Saving Club with Layne Beachley was a huge
success, with over 100 women participated in this wonderful day. This event generated a huge
media interest thanks to the enthusiastic Surfing Australia Board Chair Layne.
Financially STAS is in a very healthy position thanks to our great sponsors and the $12000 Sport n
Recreation Grant, used to support our board rider clubs, state coaching and participation programs
such as Let’s go SUP sessions through our surf school operators state-wide.
Red Herring Surf, under new management, has delivered a $6000 record major sponsorship for
Surfing Tasmania and board rider club events statewide. Thank you RHS!
Our new 5 year Strategic and Business Plan, 'One Surf Strategy', has been developed with Surfing
Australia as part of a new national program between the states and Surfing Australia. This 'One Surf
Strategy' will guide the future growth across all areas of our business and sport.
The new Surfing Australia CEO Chris Matar has been instrumental in creating innovation and change
within the organisation. Chris visited the state twice this year and displayed his willingness to
support and engage with Surfing Tasmania.
Once again, a special thanks to our valued Supporter Members/Sponsors. Your continued support
has assisted Surfing Tasmania in running events and programs state-wide.
Another highlight has been the social scene organised at the junior events, a great way to grow the
friendships and family of Surfing Tasmania. We look forward to the coming year with all our
members with exciting events and programs to share with our surfing community.

Team feedback.
Toby Ray. “ It was a great team bonding trip promoting high morale within the group. A
great experience for me competition wise as I have never had such a fantastic opportunity
to have a crack at national level. I think you would all agree we did’nt really know each other
very well at all prior to the trip and I am confident great mateships have now started and
will continue to life long!”
Sophie Adams. “ Just wanted to say a huge thanks to all of you. Last wek I was given the
amazing opportunity and I tell you what, Iam extremely thrilled that I took/had the ability to
take the opportunity. I had an absolute cracker of a time and am so grateful for the
experience. From day dot you were all so welcoming, funny and had a great
vibe…………..Overall just a big thanks! You’re all legends! Very grateful!”
Damon Hodge. “The 2018 Surfmasters has been such a positive experience to compete
against some of Australia’s best competitors. Although good results were not achieved it
showcased how effective the priority system is utilised and it will be great to see it
implemented in Tasmanian competitions. Enjoyable time away with some absolute legends.
A team uniform would have been cool!”

The trip to South Australia went well with all team members setting personal goals to achieve throughout the
week. Most of the team improved heat scores from their first heats to their subsequent scores with some
team members getting into the good range. The best result was Noah Hassett who made it to the quarter
finals. Ellie Foster and Nellie Strickland really stepped up over the week and surfing improved over a very short
time. Most of the surfing found the conditions challenging when trying to find a good line up point. The team
worked well together throughout the week both at the contest site and also during their down time at the
houses.
The Rosny boys were great leaders within the group. The accommodation was successful with the two houses
unfortunately there was not a local beach to surf so time was spent travelling to and from various beaches.
The team is going through another restructuring stage with a number of people attending their first nationals.
Hopefully over the next few years they will build from this experience and improve as surfers.
