We replaced an undersized culvert on the Spring-water Trail near the mouth of North Fork Johnson Creek.

This is the first of three North Fork culverts on which we’ll be improving passage. Our partners East Multnomah SWCD and Multnomah County are replacing / removing four others. The North Fork is a rare cold water tributary, so opening this habitat to fish will help prepare Johnson Creek for climate change.

We also worked on the design of two other North Fork culverts, two culvert removals on Mitchell Creek and a dam removal on Kelley Creek.

This project was funded by Metro, Portland General Electric/The Nature Conservancy and Portland Parks & Recreation.

Fish Passage

In 2017 we launched our bilingual Johnson Creek program with an event at Powell Butte with the local Somali community, helping our new arrivals to learn local native plants in both Somali and English.

We have several more such events with other communities planned for 2018. We also part-nered with the Lao Buddhist Center, building a native plant garden along a Johnson Creek tributary.

We continued to build our workforce develop-ment program, partnering with Wisdom of the Elders to help bring riparian management skills to Portland-area Native Americans.

Our equity projects are funded by the Collins Foundation, East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District and an anonymous major donor.

About 250 of these volunteer signups were for our Commu-nity Science program. We had five projects: salmon surveys, lamprey & steelhead surveys, dragonfly surveys, beaver activity surveys, and two ecoblitzes.

During the ecoblitz at Powell Butte, our volunteers documented 67 species of Fungi, lichen, and moss.

This program was funded by East Multnomah Soil & Water Conser-vation District and Portland Bu-reau of Environmental Services.

Community ScienceOur Johnson Creek Cleanup

celebrated its 10th year with 5.3 tons of garbage removed by a record 238 volunteers. More than a dozen corporate teams participated.

Our volunteer program continues to grow, setting records for the 3rd straight year: 2,397 signups and 10,341 hours volunteered.

We have the capacity to work with so many community mem-bers, in part, because of our su-per volunteers: creek crew lead-ers, interns, and board members.

The volunteer program was funded by the Mintkeski Family Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, Clackamas Water Environment Services and the Portland General Electric Foun-dation.

We started a new partnership this year with the City of Gresh-am, planting on City land and adjacent private properties to create extended shaded stream buffers.

We continue to plant in the agricultural upper watershed, a long-term project on Freeway Land, and on many Portland parks in the lower watershed. In all, volunteers and hired crews planted 24,900 trees & shrubs on 41 properties.

This program was funded by Clackamas Soil & Water Conser-vation District, City of Gresham, Oregon Watershed Enhance-ment Board, Metro, and East Multnomah Soil & Water Conser-vation District.

We had new faces on our board and staff in 2017: Marianne Colgrove joined the board. Chuck Lobdell replaced Katie Songer as Restoration Project Manager. We also said goodbye to board members Lauren Senkyr and Carol Zyvatkauskas and to our staff Community Outreach Coordinator, Janel Hull.

A new five-year strategic plan and five-year Equity Action Plan now guide our strategy. We are developing a strategy to include a more diverse cross-section of our watershed’s residents in our work.

Focus On YouthHands-on restoration and monitoring is a potent form of learning for youth: planting trees, removing invasive species, macroinvertebrate sampling, water quality testing. In 2017, we worked with youth groups from 19 schools and universities for a total of 899 student contacts on 29 outings.

Thank you to the Herbert A. Temple-ton Foundation and Clackamas Water Environment Services for funding our youth education programs.
