3National Health Co-op 2016-17 Annual Report
Messages fr om the CEO & C hai r
Adrian WattsManaging Director & CEO
The 2016-17 financial year has been one of immense effort and commitment by the NHC team who have continued building the foundations for what I believe is one of the most important providers of primary healthcare in Australia.
This past year we have set the groundwork for several long-term partnerships with significant organisations in the community that will allow the NHC to further increase the number of individuals who have access to affordable healthcare.
These relationships are based on mutual benefit and a shared objective to uplift the community as a whole. Most importantly, these relationships are sustainable and will be long lasting. I am confident that these new relationships will further increase the NHC’s footing and positively contribute to the advancement of our overarching objective to providing affordable healthcare for all Australians.
This past year has been an exciting period in the maturing of the National Health Co-op (NHC) into a medium sized organisation and significant provider of primary healthcare services to the Canberra region. Over the past 12 months, there has been substantial investment in the organisation’s capability and future expansion projects that will provide a solid footing for the organisation going forward.
In the past 12 months, with the support of Service One Alliance Bank, the NHC opened a new clinic in the old Higgins supermarket site. This clinic has now delivered almost 8,000 bulk billed consultations and helped to rejuvenate the local shopping centre.
The organisation’s patient database has continued to grow strongly with the NHC now providing services to over 36,000 individuals drawn from all corners of the Canberra region. This growth trend will only continue as the organisation’s footprint expands and new members join.
The NHC has also continued its important public education work holding 10 education sessions which saw hundreds of people learn about various medical conditions and preventative measures they can take.
Since last year’s AGM, the NHC’s clinical team has expanded significantly including the addition of five new General Practitioners, three new Practice Nurses and an additional Psychologist, Dietitian and dual Exercise Physiologist and Physiotherapist. Supporting the expansion of clinical services and sites, the NHC’s administrative team has also continued to develop with the addition of several key positions that lay the foundation for the organisation’s future success and nationwide expansion.

O verviewThe National Health Co-op (NHC) is a not-for-profit, member owned co-operative that provides affordable medical and healthcare services to the communities where it operates. Our overarching goal is to provide access to affordable healthcare for all Australians, significantly reducing instances of preventable diseases and lessening the personal and societal impact of chronic conditions.
Our beginningThe NHC was formed in response to a lack of General Practitioners in the northwest Canberra region of West Belconnen, a suburban area of 20,000 people. This issue came about due to medical practices progressively closing in the area over the preceding years and an increasing shortage of General Practitioners in the region.
In the hope of addressing this issue, in September 2004 a number of community organisations and local residents convened a public meeting. Out of this meeting, a community representative committee was formed, which included a small executive committee. The executive committee was tasked with trying to find solutions to the situation.
In December 2006, the committee re-formed as a registered co-operative, the ‘West Belconnen Health Co-operative Ltd’. Eventually capital funding was found to enable the opening of its first GP clinic in the suburb of Charnwood in January 2010.
In September 2014, the name was changed to the ‘National Health Co-operative Ltd’ (NHC) in recognition that the Co-op had opened several clinics in the north and south of Canberra and was planning to further expand geographically in Canberra and beyond.
Our futureThe NHC currently employs over 100 medical and administrative staff across eight clinics in Canberra and regional New South Wales. The NHC services approximately 10 percent of the ACT’s population, as well as a significant number of residents in the broader Canberra region.
The NHC is currently in the early stages of a national expansion which will see the establishment of clinics throughout Australia with a priority on areas that are under serviced, particularly in regional locations. The NHC expects that this will require in excess of 200-250 clinics nationally.
