The Home Depot Foundation is dedicated to creating

healthy, livable communities through the integration

of affordable housing built responsibly and the

preservation and restoration of community trees.

The Foundation supports the building of affordable,

efficient and healthy homes and the planting of trees

in our city parks, on tree-lined streets and in our own

backyards. In this way, the Foundation is working to

increase awareness of the connection among quality

affordable housing, adequate green spaces and trees

and the overall health and success of our communities.

The Foundation has invested millions of dollars in

communities across the country to help our neighbors

of modest means live in homes that are affordable

to own and maintain in the long term; that provide

safe, healthy environments and that conserve energy;

water and other natural resources. By helping families

and individuals secure dependable, quality affordable

housing, the Foundation increases their chances of

success in all areas of their lives and creates stable,

strong communities for years to come.

“The support of The Home Depot Foundation has been instrumental in our

success in building affordable, healthy communities and in the progress we have been able to make in the Gulf

region. The assistance we receive from the Foundation goes far beyond its

financial support, though. The most important asset the Foundation offers

the community development field is its desire to bring individuals and groups

together, to form partnerships, to provide opportunities to collaborate and to

encourage innovative thought to address the issues facing communities.”

Bart Harvey, Chairman and CEO

Enterprise Community Partners

“Mayors understand the value that trees bring to their communities by helping them become healthier places to live,

adding beauty to their neighborhoods and improving the overall quality of

their citizens’ lives. Our Excellence in Community Trees Awards program with

The Home Depot Foundation helps to recognize mayors and their cities for

their efforts and will encourage others to adopt similar successful programs.”

2005 was a remarkable year for The Home Depot Foundation.

With the help of The Home Depot’s senior leadership and store

associates, its suppliers, our Board of Directors and our nonprofit

partners, we were able to create and support stronger, healthier

communities across the country. Projects funded by the Foundation

built 8,000 homes that our neighbors of modest means can afford

to own over the long term, providing a stable base to build a

successful life. Additionally, the Foundation’s support resulted in

the planting of over 250,000 community trees, which are making

neighborhoods more sustainable and livable. We hope that this

Annual Report demonstrates the impact the Foundation is having

to strengthen communities and help improve lives.

We are also very proud of the partnerships we have developed

and enhanced during this year. By working with nonprofits that

significantly affect cities and towns nationwide, we are doing

so much more than building a house or planting a tree. We are

bringing together the energies and resources of neighborhood

residents, government and business leaders, and community

organizations and volunteers to engage in projects that are laying

the foundation for long-term community change.

Our aim is to create for everyone a sense of place and well-being

that allows individuals and families to thrive and reach their fullest

potential and to achieve their dreams. Having an affordable,

healthy home with a safe place to learn, run and play is the first

step to achieving this goal. We thank all of our donor partners who

generously support the Foundation’s efforts with their time and

financial contributions, and our nonprofit partners who share our

vision of helping individuals, families and neighborhoods. Together,

we are building healthier, more livable communities.

Live Oak Recovery Project

For 60 miles across the Gulf Coast,

hundreds of large, centuries-old oaks

survived the violence of Hurricane Katrina,

a remarkable testament to the strength

and capabilities of these trees. For

many people, these trees were among

the few things left that symbolized the

uniqueness of their communities. Although

the trees still stood, the storm surge

washed away the soil and sand leaving

roots exposed and little rain fell, which

endangered these heritage trees.

Working with the Land Trust for the

Mississippi Coastal Plain, The Home Depot

Foundation was able to provide funding

to truck soil, mulch and water in to save

655 of these trees. Protective fencing was

placed around the trunks to keep heavy

equipment from the sensitive root zones

during the cleanup and rebuilding efforts.

Not only were the trees able to be saved,

but the labor and equipment used in the

process was all local, helping to provide

jobs and funding to fragile economic

centers. Importantly, the effort was

completed in the first weeks after

the hurricane, giving the Gulf residents

hope by preserving these symbols of

their communities.

Like the entire country, we at The Home

Depot Foundation were overwhelmed by the

terrible destruction of the communities of the

Gulf Coast caused by Hurricane Katrina. The

ripple effects of this storm impacted families

and cities nationwide and brought attention

to the importance of home, housing and the

environment in our lives.

With funding from “Rebuilding Hope and

Homes,” a partnership of The Home Depot and

its suppliers and customers, the Foundation

supported the needs of those in the wake of the

storm. In the weeks following the hurricane, we

provided funding to meet their continuing needs

and to begin the recovery and rebuilding efforts,

giving residents evidence that their communities

could be restored. The rebuilding will take

years, and the Foundation is committed to

working with local nonprofi ts and communities

throughout the process. By preserving trees

and natural areas that create buffers against

storms and by designing and constructing

homes to mitigate storm damage, the

Foundation is focusing its support on building

stronger, safer and healthier communities.

After Katrina — Rebuilding Better Communities

The violence of Hurricane Katrina was almost unimaginable, destroying virtually everything man had built. Our people could deal with losing their homes, but they refused to lose their community. Many people have wanted to help, but The Home Depot Foundation has been among the few that have really helped us begin to make some progress. With its support, we are not only going to rebuild our town, we are going to make it better than it was before.”

Burlington, VT

“I can’t afford to own a house, but my apartment feels like a home. It’s not huge or fancy, but it has everything

my daughter and I need. The rent is much more reasonable than anything

else around, and my apartment is very efficient so my utility bills are low, even during a Vermont winter. We can walk

to the bus stop and to the park. They did a lot of little things to make sure that this is a comfortable, healthy and safe

place for us to live.”

Quote from Resident of Waterfront Housing

Honoring Better BuildingAwards of Excellence for Affordable Housing Built Responsibly

The Home Depot Foundation created these awards to recognize the exemplary work of nonprofit organizations that are building homes that successfully combine affordability with healthy and sustainable measures. By recognizing, celebrating and showcasing these outstanding and innovative projects, the Foundation hopes not only to offer insight, but also inspiration to others developing housing for those of modest means.

Imagine working a full-time job earning well above minimum wage

as a teacher, a police officer or a librarian, yet struggling to pay

your electricity bill or to buy a new winter coat because your rent or

mortgage payment takes more than half of your income. That’s

the situation more than 5 million Americans face every day.

The Home Depot Foundation supports the building of healthy homes

that are affordable not only to purchase, but to operate and maintain

in the long term. By ensuring that homes use less energy and

water, utility costs are lower and more predictable. Better air quality

translates to improved health and fewer trips to the doctor. Durable

materials extend the buildings’ lives and cut maintenance costs.

Locating homes near jobs, schools and public transportation reduces

transportation costs, which can use up as much as 40% of a family’s

income. By recycling, reducing construction waste, using sustainable

materials and preserving natural spaces, we create a healthier, more

valuable community for everyone.

The Home Depot Foundation supports the building of healthy,

affordable housing because it is better for the environment —

but more importantly because it is better for people.

Page 8: ANNUAL REPORT - Alliance for Community Treesactrees.org/files/Research/hdf_ar05.pdf · apartment feels like a home. It’s not huge or fancy, but it has everything my daughter and

Usually when we talk about trees and forests, we think of our

national parks, acres of wooded land and nature trails. However,

one-quarter of our nation’s forests are comprised of community

trees — trees in city parks, on tree-lined streets and in our own

backyards. The Home Depot Foundation believes that this

“urban forest” is an untapped resource that can be used to help

communities deal with the pollution of our air and water, cool our

city streets and improve our overall health.

Not only do trees clean the environment, studies have shown that

having trees nearby also helps children focus, concentrate and

perform better in school. The many economic benefits of trees

are also clear. Property values increase 5–20% when homes have

trees in the landscape, and shade from just three trees can reduce

utility bills by half. Patients recover more quickly in the hospital

when green scenery is provided, reducing healthcare costs, and

businesses on tree-lined streets experience sales increases of

up to 12%.

Finally, residents of neighborhoods with more trees and grass enjoy

more social activities, have more visitors, know more of their

neighbors and have stronger feelings of belonging. Essentially, trees

can be the catalyst for profound community change and are an

essential component of creating a strong and healthy community.

“The Home Depot Foundation truly improves everything they touch and

without their partnership and support, the NeighborWoods Program would

not have begun in 2005. During the first year of NeighborWoods, we were able

to bring together over 2,500 volunteers, children, community leaders and

The Home Depot associates to plant over 4,000 trees and create healthier

neighborhoods. The addition of these trees to the landscape is of great

significance, but the long-term impact of bringing people together, empowering

them to improve their surroundings and inspiring them to be involved in their

community is invaluable.”

Everybody likes trees, but we often forget their immense power. Trees can raise property values, cool homes and neighborhoods, break cold winds to lower heating costs, help children concentrate and clean our air and water. The Home Depot Foundation’s work is focusing national attention on the economic, social and environmental benefits of community trees, while bringing neighbors and volunteers together to improve their communities.”

“NeighborWorks® America’s relationship with The Home Depot Foundation goes much deeper than the giving and

receiving of grants. They don’t just write checks. They show up in our neighborhoods — in the hundreds — working side

by side with our neighbors in communities across the country during National NeighborWorks Week. Our shared values

of partnership and volunteerism have enabled us to forge a powerful relationship that advances our mission of improving

lives and strengthening communities.”

Ken Wade, CEO

NeighborWorks® America

In addition to providing funding, the Foundation also supports nonprofit organizations by coordinating volunteer activities for

The Home Depot suppliers and associates. By coupling volunteerism with financial support, the Foundation is able to help create lasting

relationships and stimulate community engagement.

Page 11: ANNUAL REPORT - Alliance for Community Treesactrees.org/files/Research/hdf_ar05.pdf · apartment feels like a home. It’s not huge or fancy, but it has everything my daughter and

Building quality affordable homes and planting trees can have

enormous visible, economic, social and environmental impacts on

a neighborhood in a fairly short time period. The longer-term effects

of these activities are harder to see, but even more significant.

By helping people achieve their dreams of living in a healthy

environment, in comfortable and affordable homes, we empower

them to succeed in all areas of their lives.

We know that the true strength and health of a community depends

on successful partnerships. Partnerships among residents who

take pride in their homes, are financially stable and are committed

to creating a sustainable, thriving community. Partnerships between

dedicated community leaders and effective nonprofits who have the

knowledge, resources and volunteers to assist residents in achieving

their goals. The Home Depot Foundation is proud to provide funding

and volunteers to our nonprofit partners. They bring strategic

innovation to address extremely complex issues and accomplish

amazing transformations in neighborhoods and lives. We are also

deeply appreciative for the partnerships we share with our donors.

Their support greatly increases our ability to make the dream of living

in a healthy, strong community more achievable for everyone.
