Dear Friends,

It is our pleasure to share with you Breast Cancer Connections’ Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2012.

BCC has always been unique in its ability to tailor services to each client, offering a combination of high-quality medical information, practical help, and emotional support in a non-institutional setting. We complement the medical care that patients receive from their physicians and provide a safety net for low-income, uninsured young women and men at risk.

This last year was one of change for BCC as we welcomed new leadership and expanded our programming. In response to an increased interest in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, we added a Healthy Steps exercise class, Tai Chi practice, and Reiki Energy sessions. We also added another day to our Recovery and Renewal group. BCC remains a vital resource for people facing breast cancer in the Bay Area. We are incredibly grateful to all of our volunteers, donors, and community partners. Their generosity and dedication to BCC make our progress possible and inspires us every day.

Breast Cancer Connections brings together breast cancer specialists and survivors to provide early detection, emotional support, breast cancer education, complementary therapies, and much more. Whether a client is newly diagnosed or seeking wellness after treatment, our compassionate staff and volunteers will be with them every step of the way.

We are committed to maintaining and growing a set of comprehensive programs that meet the needs of the breast cancer community. Pilot programs offered during the period of July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012 include:

Healthy Steps Exercise ClassResearch shows that exercise is one of the best therapies for people undergoing cancer treatment, or to help prevent recurrence. In this weekly class, clients exercise to upbeat music with instructor Susie Danzig. Healthy Steps employs movements using the entire body.

• Every session begins with warm-up exercises to open up the lymphatic system• Movements support immune system function, reduce scar restriction, and improve range of motion• Designed to stabilize weight, and improve balance and posture

Clothe Yourself with ConfidenceBCC encourages self-esteem and self-discovery through programs that teach skills like meditation, creative writing, and scarf tying. Clothe Yourself with Confidence was taught by Consultant Julie Kaufman and was designed to set the groundwork for knowing how to look your best, no matter what the situation or how you are feeling.

Survivorship ProgramsMany survivors experience emotional, physical and day-to-day challenges after cancer treatment is done. To meet this growing need, BCC piloted the following two programs:

1. Survivorship Panel DiscussionKnowing how to plan for and get the best possible post-treatment care can greatly contribute to quality of life. This discussion was led by Susie Brain and Joan Venticinque, Breast Cancer Advocates and Survivors; and Jennifer Coleman, MSN, Nurse Practitioner at Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

2. Moving from Surviving to Thriving This workshop, led by certified Life Coach Joanne Sperans, MBA, ACC, focused on post-treatment wellness and provided exercises to help clients successfully adapt, while adjusting to both these physical and emotional changes.

Gabriella Paster Programfor Early DetectionBCC’s Gabriella Patser Program provides free screening and diagnostic services for at-risk women and men, under 40, who are uninsured. The Program is designed as a safety netto help those who otherwise would not have access to care.

Brandi, 27, noticed a tiny dimple on her breast and didn’t think much of it at first. “It never crossed my mind that it could be cancer because I was so young and have always lived a healthy and active lifestyle and have no family history of breast cancer,” Brandi said. She had just graduated from grad school, had no job, no insurance, and little money. She went to her local Planned Parenthood which immediately referred her to BCC’s Early Detection Program (aka Gabriella Patser Program).

“I was worried that since I had to go through the Patser Program for diagnostic testing, I would have to compromise quality care or have to travel to a doctor far away,” Brandi remembers. “But the Patser Program referred me to Dr. Leah Kelly right in Marin, where I live. I soon discovered that I was referred to one of the top oncologist teams in California.” The Patser Program covered all of Brandi’s diagnostic tests including a biopsy, mammogram, and MRI. “They relieved me from all financial stress,” Brandi said.

Brandi was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, and BCC staff helped facilitate her enrollment in the State’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program, which paid for her treatment. Brandi soon began an aggressive year-long treatment program that included chemotherapy, double mastectomy, lymph node dissection, and radiation.

If it weren’t for the Patser Program, Brandi’s stage IIB breast cancer would have gone undetected. “I never would have gone to a breast specialist because I didn’t have the money and I didn’t think someone so young and so healthy could possibly have breast cancer. Nobody should have to choose between money or their life. Planned Parenthood and the Patser Program saved my life with early detection. Thank you.”

Honored as Volunteer of the Year, Karlette Warner has given extraordinary service over a significant period of time. She was chosen because her work inspires all of us to serve with the same dedication, wisdom, professionalism, and thoughtfulness that she brings to BCC.

Karlette came to BCC as a client in 1998. Two years later, following her retirement from a 32-year career at IBM, she came back to BCC asking how she could help. In the 12 years since that day, she has come in weekly on the Helpline and done more volunteer jobs and projects than we can count. Some of the hats she’s worn include Secretary of the Board of Directors, Board President,

Most recently, Karlette held the position of Chair of the Program Committee, whose major project involved evaluating BCC programs. Karlette is a generous team member and principled leader who has consistently been a shining example of volunteerism at BCC.

Laurel, 36, stood at the front of her fourth grade classroom and told her students that she had breast cancer. “I don’t usually lose it in front of my kids, but I started crying,” Laurel remembers. “They have heard the word cancer and it’s very alarming for kids. One little boy, who is particularly helpful, brought me a box of tissues. The kids protested, ‘But you’re too young to have cancer!’ It was tough because they become very attached to you,” Laurel said.

She had a mastectomy during Spring Break and took the rest of the school year off to recover. “My students wrote sweet messages and cards. I think it was traumatic for them; they’re trying to make sense of the world,” Laurel said.

She found support at BCC’s Young Women’s Networking Group and met women who were also 36 and single. Young women with breast cancer face distinctive challenges. Some are forced to think about their future and whether or not they want to have children. “It’s hard not to be angry about losing a breast. Or angry about preserving eggs,” Laurel said. She started collecting stories and experiences from women in the group. “It’s helpful to hear other ways of coping. Collectively, we talked about anxieties, trouble with insomnia, and dating.”

Laurel received support from BCC’s Wig Buddy, and the Information Services Team which provided articles on chemotherapy side effects. Laurel also spoke with a BCC therapist about her infertility. Even though Laurel feels like she has an extended family at her school, she chose to preserve her eggs, a tough personal choice but one that was right for her.

“It’s so important to have a community that supports you during breast cancer. BCC is a great resource,” Laurel said.
