INTRODUCTION
Founded in 1936 by legendary cultural ambassador Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale, the Kalakshetra
Foundation was declared as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament in 1993.
The pioneering vision of Smt. Rukmini Devi’s philosophical bedrock of ‘art without vulgarity, beau-
ty without cruelty and education without fear’ inspires Kalakshetra.
As a leading institution for teaching Bharatanatyam and Carnatic Music in the country, Kalakshet-
ra creates a cultural ambience which nurtures the various units under it, which include the Rukmini
Devi College of Fine Arts which is devoted to Bharatanatyam, Carnatic Music and the visual arts,
two high schools, a centre for weaving and natural dyeing and printing, two libraries that address
the knowledge- based needs of students and scholars alike on arts and its allied subjects; and a
hostel for school and college students.
Between April 2015 and March 2016, the Kalakshetra Foundation has been involved in a range of
activities in consonance with its vision to promote India’s ancient culture and set a standard of true
art. Towards this, it has focussed on festivals, workshops, lectures, enhancement of its repertoire,
performances, field trips, research and documentation projects as well as hosted several high
profile visitors to its campus.
This report places on record the various efforts undertaken by the institution during this period.

PROmOTION OF aRT aND eDUCaTION ThROUgh The
RUKmINI DevI COllege OF FINe aRTs
the prestigious Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts (RDCFA) is the flagship institution within
the Foundation and has long been considered the pinnacle of cultural education and
artistic achievement in Carnatic Music and Bharatanatyam. The current strength of students
enrolled in various full-time courses at Kalakshetra is 195. As part of its commitment to
support able and talented students, the Foundation awarded scholarships under various
schemes.
As every year, the usual bevy of field trips, guest lectures and dissertation work served
to support and enhance the rigorous classroom training. As an educational institution,
Kalakshetra is committed to exploring opportunities to expand its knowledge-base and its
repertoire. During this year, several such opportunities were organised, which included a
diversity of workshops and lectures, enriching the depth and breadth of the curriculum.

1.2 Annual convocation
The Annual Convocation for the Rukmini
Devi College of Fine Arts was held at the
Rukmini Arangam on January 6, 2016.
Eminent musicologist, Prof. S.R. Janakiraman
distributed the diplomas to the students. Three
endowment cash prizes of Rs.4000 each were
awarded to three deserving students
This was followed by Carnatic music and
Bharatanatyam margam performances by the
graduating candidates. The summary of the
graduating students for the year 2015-16 is

1. AcADEmIc mAttERs
1.1 Vidyarambham
First year students commenced their academic
journey on the auspicious day of vidyarambham
on June 26, 2015. Eminent artist, ms. malavika
Sarukkai was the special guest of the day. She
blessed all the new students for a successful
academic year.
Based on aptitude tests and interviews,
admissions in Kalakshetra were confirmed to:
• Diploma in Bharatanatyam : 48 students
• Diploma in Carnatic music : 10 students
• Diploma in visual Arts : 4 students
The college re-opened after vacations on
June 16, 2015.

2. tALKs &WORKsHOPs
2.1 Arts management Workshop in conjunction with ccRt
the Kalakshetra Foundation conducted a five-
day Arts Management Workshop in conjunction
with CCRT, Delhi, for the students of dance and
music in the third and fourth year Diploma and
first and second year Post Diploma Courses of
the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts. This
workshop was planned as a five-day short-
term course for dance and music students
of the Kalakshetra, to introduce them to various
aspects of Arts Management and allow them
an understanding of ideas like brand building
in the arts, performing arts management,
arts-related policies, cultural tourism and arts
entrepreneurship.
2.2 Field tripsAs part of the annual academic activity of the
Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts, students
are taken to several sites/places on field trips
in order to strengthen their understanding
of the historical, socio-political, economic,
religious, ritualistic, artistic and above all, the
philosophical importance of Indian culture.
Some trips are specific and some are common
to students of dance, music and the visual arts
departments.

2.3 mentoringUnder the Murugappa Scholarship Scheme,
Sri. neyveli Santhanagopalan and Prof.
C. v. Chandrasekar conducted mentoring
workshops for music and dance students
respectively between February 8 and March 5.
2.4 WorkshopsMusic workshops:
A workshop on manodharma by Shri neyveli
Santhanagopalan was conducted for staff and
students of the music department between
September 7 and September 9, 2015. He
further conducted a music workshop for all
music students on October 29, 2015. Five
students were selected for a fortnight-long
advanced training in Carnatic music conducted
by the music Academy on October 26, 2015.
Dance Workshop
In collaboration with the Prakriti Foundation,
Akram Khan, internationally renowned Kathak
and contemporary dancer and choreographer,
delivered a masterclass on contemporary
dance and collaborations in art on September
23, 2015.
Crafts Workshop
Prof. viswambhara, a well-known print-maker
from Mumbai, conducted a residency camp
on print-making at the Kalakshetra between
February 15 and 22, 2016.

3.1.1: Remembering Rukmini Devi Festival –
February 21 to March 2, 2016
The 11-day arts festival reached out to more
than 9000 people and showcased some of
the best internationally acclaimed artists and
the best from Kalakshetra Foundation’s own
repertoire. “Usha Parinayam”, a dance drama
was performed on the opening day of the
festival. the festival included all the six parts of
Rukmini Devi’s iconic Ramayanam series.
The Remembering Rukmini Devi Festival
enthused students to read excerpts from
Rukmini Devi’s writings and reflect upon her
ethos and conviction.
Staff and students of the Kalakshetra
Foundation gathered together under the
banyan tree for Smt. Rukmini Devi’s birthday
celebrations that was celebrated on February
29, 2016. Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam was the
Chief Guest.
3.1.2 Kathakali Festival – Bhava Shabalima
The annual Kathakali festival, Bhava
Bhavanam, was held between September
19 and 22 September, 2015. Entitled Bhava
Shabalima, the festival was inaugurated by
legendary artist Padmashri Sri. Kalamandalam
Gopi who also opened the festival with his
titular performance in the dance drama,
“Rukmangada Charitham”. Keeping with the
spirit of the festival from past years, which has
always endeavoured to inform and educate
people about the art form of Kathakali apart
from showcasing the best of the art in Chennai,
the two lecture demonstrations were:
• “Kallatikotan Style of Kathakali” by
Sri. v. P. Dhananjayan, Sri. Janardhanan and
Sri. Balagopalan, all senior alumni of the
Kalakshetra Foundation
• “Romantic Scenes in Kathakali” by Padmashri
Sri. Kalamandalam Gopi
A very special feature of the Kathakali festival
this year was that it was staged at a special
outdoor arena created exclusively for this on
campus by artists of Kalakshetra. The institution
is looking to set this space up as a permanent
Kathakali performance space in the future.

3.1.3 Svanubhava
The annual Svanubhava festival was conducted
on August 7, in collaboration with the
Svanubhava team. This year, the festival was
designed as a 24-hour non-stop celebration
of dance and music moving across the
diverse performing spaces in Kalakshetra. The
performances featured rare art forms such as:
Bhagavatha mela (melattur), theyyam (Kerala)
and namasankirtan. the festival also featured
mainstream performers such as:
Sri. Kadri Gopalnath
(Saxophone, Carnatic music)
Smt. Gayathri venkataraghavan
(Carnatic vocal)
Smt. Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company
(Kathak)
Sri. Kotakkal Kesavan Kundalayyar
(Kathakali)

(nagaswaram)
Other novel performances in the line-up
included a veena-venu-violin trio performed
by young musicians of Chennai and a dance
production on Jonathan Livingston Seagull
performed by the troupe of Smt. Jayanthi
Subramaniam. A new feature as part of this
year’s festival was workshops in the fields of
dance, music, photography, theatre and art,
offered by experts in their respective fields for
the benefit of students and young persons.
3.2 New Festivals
3.2.1 Suvritti choreography festival:
February 7 to 12, 2016
Suvritti 2016 was a new festival conceptualized
and curated by the Kalakshetra Foundation
this year to present choreographic work in
Bharatanatyam and other classical art forms
by contemporary artists who are leading
performers from around the country. The
festival featured 12 artists across six days,
each day designed to have a discussion
session at the end. These discussion sessions
were an important aspect of the festival,
designed to facilitate a conversation between
the choreographers and the audience, giving
the rasika and students of dance, a chance
to get into the minds of the choreographer
and understand their creative processes. Also
part of the festival was a pre-festival interview
on choreography conducted with each artist,
which was on display as a walk-through photo
exhibition outside the auditorium.
A special focus group of dance students was
created through invitations to major dance
schools around the city. The members of this
focus group were invited to attend all sessions
of Suvritti and thereafter participate in an hour-
long review and impact discussion session of
the various presentations.
3.2.2 Prasaarana Festivals
the first two editions of the Prasaarana Festival,
a new and unique off-campus festival featuring

performances and lecture demonstrations by
staff and students of Kalakshetra at mainstream
venues within the city was held in September.
the first edition was a four-day festival between
September 14 and 16, at the Bharatiya vidya
Bhavan, Mylapore. The second was a three-
day festival between September 28 and 30, at
Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, t nagar.
This new festival not only allowed a diverse set
of audiences to be introduced to the traditions
of Kalakshetra and what it has to offer, but also
served as an ideal platform to create exposure
for the students and staff of the institution while
showcasing their work and talent.
3.2.3 Maagha Tarangini
This was a three-day music festival between
March 7 and 9, featuring young promising
local musicians. 18 accompanying artistes
further supported the six main artistes. this
festival reached out to an audience of almost
1500 people across three days.
3.3 Baani Conference and Festival
This was as a comprehensive national scale
conference by Kalakshetra, aimed to create
the much-needed link between the great dance
traditions of the past centuries and the present
generation of youngsters in the field of dance.
this six-day conference and festival on baanis
in Bharatanatyam between March 11 and 16,
2016, was designed to be a one-of-its-kind
festival that brought together an array of living
legends in the field under one umbrella in a
momentous way.
Special Features : 1. Lectures, talks and panel discussions in the morning sesisons 2. Evening performances by the greatest living exponents of the various baanis3. A dedicated photo exhibition curated in partnership with the Sruti Foundation 4. A special festival publication titled ‘Baani’5. Live webcast increasing impact factor and reach of the festival 6. the fourth issue of the Kalakshetra Journal was launched7. Focus Group Discussions were held to involve the younger generation8. 3.4 commemoration Festivals
3.4.1 Birth Centenary celebrations of Smt. S. Sarada
On September 1, 2015, the Kalakshetra
Foundation celebrated the birth centenary
of Smt. S. Sarada. A scholar par excellence,
Smt. S. Sarada was a pillar of strength to
Smt. Rukmini Devi right from the inception
of Kalakshetra in 1936. The students, staff
and alumni of Kalakshetra came together to
celebrate her memory, bringing attention to
an ongoing tradition of scholarly interpretation
in the performing arts introduced by her and
emphasising the importance of understanding
the many layers of performing arts for young
artists of today. The evening comprised of
presentations of dance, music and memories
by illustrious alumni and staff and students of
the Kalakshetra Foundation. The evening was
special and noteworthy as three generations of
Kalakshetra artists came together to pay homage
to one of its greatest teachers and scholars.
3.4.2 Gurusmaranadinam
On October 14, 2015, the Kalakshetra
Foundation in collaboration with Kalasagar,
Kavalappara, presented a homage to visionary
gurus and a tribute to living legends Prof. C.K.
Balagopalan and Prof. S.R. Janakiraman. this
was followed by a Kathakali recital.
3.5 monthly Events
3.5.1 Monthly Concert at Rukmini Arangam
Monthly cultural programmes were resumed
at the Rukmini Arangam for the upcoming
academic year to promote young professionals
in the field of classical music and dance. these
monthly programmes form a component of
Kalakshetra’s responsibility towards giving
a platform and visibility to new work created
by the current generation of artists and have
featured present faculty members, alumni of
Kalakshetra as well as other artistes. Examples:•“veda Bharathi” (Poems of mahakavi Subramanya Bharathi) by natyarangam

•“Perumaale”, a tamil play produced by Smt. Madhuvanti Arun• Bharatanatyam by Sri. Arun K. velayudham by Kalakshetra alumnus as a memory to Late Sri. thangamani nagraj• Bharatanatyam by Smt. 3.5.2 Monthly Concert at Tagore Hall
The monthly cultural programmes at Tagore
Hall showcased very young talent in the
field of classical music and dance. these
monthly programmes form a component
of Kalakshetra’s responsibility towards
encouraging the younger generation from
taking on the mantle of the arts. Further,
Kalakshetra collaborated with Prayatnam,
an organisation of young dance teachers
toestablish the Disha series of monthly concerts
at Tagore Hall. Examples: Bharatanatyam: S. Saraswathi Sahana, disciple of Smt. Archana Mahesh G. Shruthilekha , disciple of Smt. Urmila Sathyanarayana. Carnatic music: t. n. Arunagiri, disciple of Smt. Savita narasimhan.
3.6 traditional Events3.6.1 Karthigai SomavaramThe music students and the staff of Kalakshetra rendered bhajans on the auspicious days of Karthigai Somavaram which has been in practice since the time of Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale.
3.6.2 Onam Celebrationsthe festival of Onam was celebrated by students and the staff of Kalakshetra in a grand manner on August 28, 2015. Students presented a cultural programme and decorated the campus with flower kolams. Games and other activities were also organised for the staff and students to participate.
3.6.3 VidyarambhamOn October 22, 2015, vijayadasmi, vidyarambham was conducted with the re-opening of college after the navrathri holidays. 3.6.4 Foundation DayThe 80th Foundation day was celebrated at 6pm on January 6, 2016 at the Rukmini Arangam. There were readings from the writings of Smt. Rukmini Devi followed by an excerpt from “Sita Swayamvaram” (wedding scene) performed by the Kalakshetra Repertory Company.
3.6.5 Thyagaraja Aradhanathe “thyagarajaAradhana” was celebrated on thursday, January 28, 2016 on Bahula Panchami day by taking a small procession from RukminiArangam at 7.15a.m. towards Sri. Marundeeswarar temple and came back to Rukmini Arangam. Following which, Thyagaraja’s Pancharathna Kritis were rendered.
3.6.6 Independence DayIndependence Day was celebrated by all units of the Kalakshetra Foundation on the premises of the Besant Arundale Senior Secondary School in a grand manner.

3.7 Alumni Day
A special day-long event was organised for the reunion of Kalakshetra alumni on Dec1, 2015.
Many alumni, young and old, of Kalakshetra congregated in the campus, despite the torrential
downpour in the city on the day, to share old memories, and reminisce on their time here. The
activities of the day began with congregation for prayer under the banyan tree. This was followed
by an audio-visual presentation of excerpts from the Oral History Documentation project of
Kalakshetra and an Av report on recent activities at the institution.
Senior alumni of Kalakshetra broke into an impromptu sharing and presentation of dance
excerpts and experiences from their times in the institution. the alumni presented dance and music
performances to wrap up the day. The tree planting by alumni took place to mark the occasion. It
turned out to be a day of great camaraderie and joy for the Kalakshetra family.

4. OUtREAcH
4.1 Outreach Workshopsa) Outreach Workshop in Portugal
Kalakshetra’s Outreach Workshop in
Bharatanatyam was conducted in Lisbon,
Portugal, upon the invitation of the Portuguese
Yoga Confederation for the second consecutive
year. The workshop was a ten-day course
taught by senior student artist Ms. Sharada
Acharya of the Rukmini Devi College of Fine
Arts between June 21 and July 2, 2015.
Yoga practitioners belonging to the
confederation attended the workshop and
are seeking continual training and practice
of Bharatanatyam as a relevant and active
form of yoga. This workshop was yet another
significant activity in the ongoing collaboration
between the two institutions.
b) Outreach Workshop in Pune
Kalakshetra’s Outreach Workshop in
Bharatanatyam was conducted in Pune,
maharashtra, under the auspices of nrityayatri
Art Movement. This ten-day intensive course
held between May 24 and 31, 2016, was taught
by four experienced faculty members of the
Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts programme
– Sri. K.P. Rakesh, Sri. Sibi Sudarsan, Smt.
nirmala nagaraj and Smt. Jyotsna menon.
A total of 70 students registered for the camp
– 20 for the Basic Level, 30 for Intermediate
and 20 for the Advanced Level. The workshop
received a very good feedback from both the
students and the host organisation.
4.2 Jana Bharathamthis is a collaborative event with natyarangam
and is being co-ordinated by Sri. Lokesh Raj,
Tutor – RDCFA. Through hour-long lecture-
demonstrations in Bharatanatyam, this aims
to not only entertain the audience but also
further take the classical fine arts out to the
masses and to new audience amongst schools,
educational institutions and community spaces
such as hospitals, orphanages and old age
homes.
4.3 Visit of Research student from canadaPhD Student ms. marie-Josée Blanchard from
The Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society
and Culture (CiSSC) at Concordia University,
Canada, visited Kalakshetra between July 13
and 14, 2016 to conduct field work on her
research in the area of Rasa Theory. She spent
the two days observing classes, exploring the
libraries and talking to the students and faculty
members, as preliminary field work for her
PhD Thesis.

4.4 Navarathri Workshops:Between October 12 and 17, 2015, navarathri
workshops in Music, Dance and Kalamkari
were conducted by the Kalakshetra Foundation
for the candidates aged between 8 and
12. Beyond music and dance workshops, it
included sessions on traditional games, kolam
drawings and heritage walks. The Kalamkari
workshop had a special batch for adults as
well.
4.5 short-term course
A short term Bharatanatyam course was

4.6 Heritage WalksThe Kalakshetra Heritage Walks, introduced
in April 2014, as guided walks for visitors
available on a prior-booking basis, served
to create awareness about Kalakshetra with
the general public while also simultaneously
generating a good revenue for Kalakshetra.
The response to these walks has been very
good with several persons opting for the walk.

4.7 community Outreach in state-run schoolsAs an essential part of its Outreach efforts,
Kalakshetra works to make arts education
accessible to children from economically
backward sections of society with the aim
of nurturing awareness, appreciation and
sensitivity towards the arts. This was planned
with the larger aim of empowering young
people from less privileged backgrounds
through arts and creating a channel for their
inclusivity in the mainstream. Towards this,
Kalakshetra works in tandem with an nGO
called Aanmajothi, to deliver eight classes
regularly every month to 20 students across six
Corporation schools in Chennai.

1. Documentation1.1 Oral History Documentation Project
The third phase of the documentation of the
Oral history of Kalakshetra was initiated in
January 2016. in this first phase, interviews
of four senior alumni were conducted over
four days; these include Sri. S.R.Janakiraman,
Smt. Shanta Dhananjayan, Smt. Catherine
Kunhiraman and Sundari teacher. The
interviews were designed and conducted
by Smt. Gowri Ramnarayan. The complete
project including edited video footage and
photographs are now part of Kalakshetra’s
archival material.
1.2 Video Shoot for Global Investors’ Meet,
Govt of Tamil Nadu
A video shoot of dance and music performed by
the foreign students in Kalakshetra alongside
their indian counterparts was done on July
17, 2015. This was showcased at the Global
Investors’ Meet organised by the Government
of tamil nadu.
1.3 Musical forms documenting:
A talk by Ishwar Srikumar and Anushka
Meenakshi on documenting musical forms
was held on February 18. 2016.
2. museum
2.1 The inventory of Shanta Rao Collection
was completed. This included her sarees,
books and miscellaneous items. 166 books
from this collection was catalogued.
2.2 Catalogued costumes of different character
from the six part Ramayana series of dance
drama.
2.3 Photographs were taken of the curtain in
Rukmini Arangam for it’s revival.
2.4 the Photography exhibition of the Baani
Festival included Rukmii Devi’s photos.
2.5 Museum staff Smt. Sreerenjini attended
the CiDOC conference in Delhi between
September 5 and 10.

3. Publications
3.1 The Issue 4 of the Kalakshetra Journal
which was originally conceptualized by Smt.
Rukmini Devi as a forum for cross-disciplinary
discussions on the arts was launched during
the festival. This was edited by eminent scholar
and artist Smt. Lakshmi viswanathan.
3.2 Bhuprana, a book on the fauna of
Kalakshetra, was launched on the last day
of the Remembering Rukmini Devi Festival.
This book was a culmination of the survey
done by the madras naturalists Society on the
Kalakshetra campus for the last few years.
3.3 Baani, a special festival publication with
various articles on the topic of Baani was
published and released during the Baani
Conference.
4. Digitisation and Archives
The documentation and archives department
has kept up ongoing digitization and
cataloguing work completing digitization of
several hours of audio, video and several
photos. The re-cataloguing of the books in the
Research Library as per international standards
is in progress. the database of books in R&D
library from CDS ISIS is being transferred into
Excel format.

PROmOtION OF tRADItIONAL cRAFts through the Craft eduCation and researCh Centre (CerC)
the Craft Education and Research Centre (CERC), which has been a guardian to the traditions
of weaving, Kalamkari painting and hand-block printing, with emphasis on preservation and
revival of dying arts and lost traditions, stands testimony to the Foundation’s holistic vision and
commitment to the arts and crafts of India. It manufactures and sells a range of products which
include traditional designs of silk weaving from the Rukmini Devi Collection and cotton weaving
from the Kalakshetra tradition.
1.Niram Thiram – textile Festival the annual textile festival, niram thiram, was
held between november 18 and 21 2015,
at the Crafts Education and Research Centre
premises. this year, the theme of the exhibition
was Embroidery and Pottery.
Shrujan trust, an nGO working in Kutch,
brought an exhibition titled “Embroideries of
Kutch”, a curated audio and visual installation
featuring exquisite and varied embroideries
from the Kutch region of Gujarat.
The festival and the installation was inaugurated
on november 18. Alongside this installation,
following workshops were conducted:
•Kutch embroidery by Smt. Gitaben Haribhai
Meriya
•Kutch pottery painting by Smt. and Sri.
Hasambhai Umar Khumbar from Lodai, Kutch
•Kasuti embroidery by Smt. tara Hulamani

The festival was a resounding success with
workshops being attended to full capacity
and a large footfall for the installations and
viewings.
The Kalakshetra Foundation hosted a Seminar
on “Craft and innovation – SHOt india” in

States, between January 29 and February
1, 2016. The inauguration was started
in the Craft Education & Research Centre
and continued into the theatre space at the
Rukmini Arangam wherein a lecture by Prof.

Arundale was followed by an excerpt from “Sita
Swayamvaram”, a dance drama performed by
the Kalakshetra Repertory Company

Ambika Buch, and Smt. Jyotsna narayanan;
along with advisory and executive committee

Kalakshetra is charged with the running of
two high schools, the Besant Arundale Senior
Secondary School and the Besant Theosophical
Higher Secondary School. Set in calm sylvan
surroundings with spacious cottages for
classrooms, the schools provide an ambience
for holistic learning and environmental
awareness as the rest of the institution. Well-
equipped infrastructural facilities and audio
visual learning aids deliver academic concepts
in an interesting and practical manner. Apart
from consistent excellence in academics, the
schools invest committed time in extra and co-
curricular activities guided by a sense of social
responsibility.
1.Besant Arundale senior secondary school
Academic Performance the School performed extremely well in the
Central Board of Secondary Education Class X
and Xii examinations in the academic calendar,
2014-15 with 100% pass percentage in both
Class X and Class Xii. One student of Class
X received 10 points as CGPA and secured
a national rank. the school topper of Class
Xii received a total mark of 477/500 (95.4%)
which has broken the existing record of toppers
in BASS from the previous years.
Balashree AwardHRD Minister, Smt. Smriti Irani awarded the
prestigious Balashree Award to Bhairavi
venkatesh of class Xi in recognition for
her excellence in creative performance in
Bharatanatyam on February 3. This award
includes a citation and a cash prize.
EVENtsAnnual Day
The Annual Day for the academic year 2014-
2015 was celebrated in a grand manner on
April 22, 2015. The Chief Guest, Sri. Shaik
Mohammad Saleem, Assistant Commissioner
of Kendriya vidyalaya Sangathan, distributed
the prizes. the English play, “Departed” and
a dance drama on female infanticide was the
highlight of the cultural programme.
Valedictory Function the valedictory function of the co-curricular
activities was held on February 11. Smt.
Geetha Sridhar, well-known Bharatnatyam
dancer from the United Kingdom, and an
alumnus of BASS was the Chief Guest. She
distributed the prizes to the winners of the
various competitions and encouraged the
children to pursue their passion and inherent

1. swacch Bharat Our students participated in the cleaning camp to clean
the beach inside the Urur Olcott Kuppam organized by Sri
T.M.Krishna at 6am on February 21, 2016.
The Kalakshetra Foundation joined hands with the rest of the
nation in taking the cleanliness pledge on October 2, under
the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan! Kalakshetra and all its members,
students, teachers and administrative staff alike, have always
held cleanliness and respect for the environment close to
their heart, and with this oath the institution continued to
pledge its commitment to the cause. The staff and students
also engaged in a cleaning drive of the college campus.
As part of the Swacch Bharat initiative, conforming to CBSE
guidelines, groups of ambassadors were formed from our
students. They encouraged children of all classes to keep
the surroundings free from litter. A cycle rally was organised
to spread awareness on cleanliness carrying placards and
banners. Students of the primary classes carried placards
and went around the school and performed dramas, dances
and a song on the theme of cleanliness. As a result of this
campaign it is heart-warming to see our children continuing
to voluntarily pick up litter and consciously reduce waste
paper. This was telecast in two parts by Doordarshan.
On October 27 and 28, Kanaga Kalvi workshop by iragukal,
a naturalists Association focussed on the ecosystem,
biodiversity, forest management, and emphasised the 6 Rs
to conserve our environment. The 6 Rs are Rethink, Refuse,
Reduce, Repair, Recycle and Re-use.
