A letter from the President The Cayuga County Community College Foundation, Inc.

Dear Friends of the CCC Foundation,

For 30 years the hallmark of the Cayuga Community College Foundation has been growth. Beginning in 1982 with initial gifts of about $5,000, the Foundation quickly surpassed one milestone after another:

1990 $1 million in total assets1991 $2 million1997 $5 million1999 $7.5 million2006 $10 million

In addition to growing our portfolio, the Foundation’s leaders and you, our donors, have made significant gifts to the College’s students. Since 2005, our scholarship support has averaged around $300,000 annually. Add to that our support to several capital projects, and the CCC Foundation’s total giving since 2005 has exceeded $6 million!

During 2011-12, your Foundation entered a new and expansive era. After many months of careful consideration, the CCC Foundation took on the ownership of River Glen Plaza, the site of Cayuga’s new Fulton Campus. Overnight, the Foundation’s assets nearly doubled to more than $21 million. In this annual report, we’ll tell you how and why this was done. This is truly an exciting time to partner with the “new” Cayuga Community College Foundation.

Going all the way back to 1982, our accomplishments have always hinged on one thing—the generosity of our donors. May I take this opportunity to recognize your support in the past and to encourage your continued partnership with the CCC Foundation. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff, I thank you for making our Foundation one of the outstanding success stories among America’s community colleges.

Support to the CollegeThe Foundation provides support to the College in two forms: 1) scholarships, awards and grants to students and 2) support for academic and other College and community programs. The Foundation had another good year receiving gifts and grants from many generous individuals, foundations and organizations.

Support to StudentsIn the past year, the Foundation received funds to create seven new scholarships:

The Alfieri & McColgin Nursing Excellence Scholarship was created by Linda Alfieri, Director of CCC Nursing Program, and Dr. Cathleen McColgin, alumna of the nursing program and former employee of the College. This will be awarded to a student entering his/her second year of CCC’s Nursing Program who demonstrates a spirit of inquiry and passion for the pursuit of excellence in the nursing profession.

Cayuga County Association of Realtors holds an annual golf tournament and has been donating the proceeds to several community organizations. In 2012 they decided to direct some of the proceeds to the youth in our community. The recipient of this award must be a full-time registered, incoming freshman, who is a resident of Cayuga County demonstrating financial need and plans on majoring in business.

Eastern Shore Associates Insurance Scholarship was established by Robert K. Wallace, Foundation Board Member and President and CEO of Eastern Shore Associates Insurance. This scholarship will be given to a full-time, returning sophomore attending the Fulton campus who is pursuing studies in business and fosters a strong commitment to his or her business studies.

Weston D. Eldred Memorial Scholarship was established after the untimely death of this graduate who received a 2009 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Wes was passionate about his studies, renewable energy, environmental science and helping his fellow students through CCC’s Tutor Club. This award is given to a returning (second-year) full-time student at the Auburn campus who is studying the sciences and demonstrates a passion for the study of chemistry, problem-solving skills, a hunger for knowledge and a vision for his/her future.

The Nancy McGohan Memorial Nursing Scholarship was created by friends of Nancy, who was an alumna of the nursing program and an employee of Auburn Memorial Hospital for 31 years. The award recognizes a returning sophomore enrolled in the nursing program who demonstrates patience, compassion and a therapeutic sense of humor toward others, as well as good academic standing and financial need.

Family, friends and colleagues endowed a scholarship fund in memory of Katie Socci, who was murdered on June 15, 2011, leaving behind a young daughter. She was a graduate of Auburn High School and the CCC nursing program. She demonstrated her skills in medical-surgical, neurological, telemetry and critical care units, serving patients in Auburn, Syracuse, Rochester, San Diego, San Francisco and Charleston. Her devotion to family ultimately brought her back to Auburn and as an RN at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. The Katie M. Socci Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a returning student in his/her final year

2011-12

of the nursing program. The recipient should demonstrate Katie’s compassion for patients and a wide-ranging interest in multiple settings in which nurses practice their art. Preference is given to a single parent who is a Cayuga County high school graduate.

The Thomas James Wiggins Sr. Memorial Scholarship was created by family and friends in memory of Mr. Wiggins, who had a strong will to live throughout his multiple battles with cancer beginning when he was one year old. This is awarded to a student entering his or her second year in the nursing program who is an inspiration to others in the program. Preference will be given to a student who has overcome a health issue or other adversity in pursuit of a career in nursing.

Student Testimonials“I was so grateful to have been chosen to receive the Ralph W. Standbrook Scholarship. One of the hardest parts about coming back to school as a nontraditional student is being able to afford to do so. This scholarship will help tremendously in this aspect. Thank you so much for selecting me as a recipient.”

Brian Knapp Ralph W. Standbrook Scholarship

Support to the College

Program SupportProgram support provides funding for faculty, staff and our community:

• Instructional Equipment Funds are for student use and provided $49,395 to purchase equipment for several departments:

Electrical Technology: magnetic fields in coils to provide students with “hands-on” learning of abstract concepts of electric and magnetic fields

Art: purchase of 16 digital cameras and a printer for the digital camera classes in Fulton

Humanities and Communication: purchase of a Tricaster (also known as a “TV production truck in a box”) allows the students to do multi-camera, remote television productions. Currently student production crews use it to record weekly musical productions at the Auburn Public Theater. In the future, they’ll be using it to produce television coverage of college sports.Audio isolation booth and microphones as an upgrade to the college’s Music Recording Studio. It allows students to professionally isolate vocalists and instruments during recording sessions and produce high quality, profes-sional audio.

Theatre Arts: lighting control board, remote focus unit, touch screen monitor and remote video interface unit

• Myron Sullivan Memorial Fund: After his service in the U.S. Air Force, Myron “Mike” Sullivan made his career as a physics teacher. Mike taught at Auburn/Cayuga Community College for 30 years. Upon his passing in 2006, family and friends created the Myron Sullivan Memorial Fund at the CCC Foundation. In 2011, the Sullivan family authorized the use of more than $7,000 of Mike’s fund for purchases of equipment. “While scholarships are important for individual students, this will benefit every student who uses our new Fulton laboratories,” said Jeff Hoffman, Executive Director. “In addition, the new labs are being used by Mike’s nephew and CCC adjunct lecturer, Dennis Sullivan. This gift allows CCC to offer physics courses at our Fulton Campus for the first time.”

• The Library Collection Fund purchased the “Gale Encyclopedia of American Law” in the e-book format.

• Summer Faculty Fellowship Grants enabled two nursing faculty members, Jane Kiernan and Brenda Forrest, to learn new techniques that their nursing students will need upon graduation and their entrance into the medical field. They focused on becoming proficient in the use of electronic health records when used for administration of medications and advanced SimMan manikin for integration into the nursing program’s curriculum.

• A Special Project Grant was awarded to Business instructor Amy Valente to attend an ESRI Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Conference with attendees from all over the world. Amy attended the Education and User Conferences and the Business Summit. Amy also presented at the conference providing examples of lessons and student learning outcomes and the integration of GIS into so many businesses. Since the conference, Amy has been asked to be part of a task force to create a proposal for Business Geography/Business GIS Curriculum Development. Amy also serves as advisor to the Auburn Campus Business Club.

• The Noreen and Michael J. Falcone Lecture Series brought authors Bernard and Jon Whalen ‘64 of the novel “Justifiable Homicide” to the Fulton Campus in October. The book is an accurate NYPD police procedural that explores the various states of mind necessary to commit intentional murder in today’s society. The father and son authors discussed why all killers believe their actions are justified. Bernard is a lieutenant in the New York Police

Department, and Jon is a retired teacher who worked as a New York State corrections officer in Sing Sing and Auburn prisons while attending college. The Criminal Justice and Literary Clubs, along with the Fulton Campus Library and PTK, sponsored this event with major funding from the Falcone Lecture Fund of the CCC Foundation.

Thommie Walsh Tribute – In early May, Barbara Walsh (Thommie’s sister), the Cayuga Community College Foundation, the Auburn Public Theater, Stardust Foundation, M&T Bank and CCC Student Activities Board sponsored Tony award winner Tommy Tune to bring his current show, Steps in Time, to Auburn to honor his longtime friend, Auburn native Thommie Walsh. John Walsh, Thommie’s cousin and host of America’s Most Wanted, gave the welcoming remarks and then the trio, Manhattan Rhythm Kings, played the music for the show. The proceeds from the show established a scholarship in Thommie’s name at the CCC Foundation and will be awarded to a student who wants to pursue a concentration in theatre or music. Thommie’s sister stated that the scholarship “will be Thommie’s legacy” and will “help keep his memory alive.” Thommie was an actor, singer and dancer. After several shows on Broadway (two Tonys) and original cast member of A Chorus Line, he became a producer, choreographer and author.

Following the performance on Saturday evening, Foundation Board member Joanne Dusel arranged a special reception for special ticket holders to have the opportunity to meet and greet and have a photo taken with Tommy Tune and John Walsh.

The tribute’s goal was to raise funds to endow the scholarship, and the generosity of the community made that goal a reality.

Brunell Visiting Scholar Samite Mulondo, a world-renowned musician, humanitarian and photographer, spent time during the spring semester on campus. Every other year a Visiting Scholar is made possible through the proceeds of the endowed fund established by longtime Professor Robert Brunell before his sudden death. Samite is originally from Uganda and shared his personal accounts of the violence that occurred there and found that music is a great healer whose message brings hope and peace to others. During his visits on campus, Samite spoke to the art class and had them paint on the stage while he performed his music; showed the film “War Dance” with a discussion afterwards; held rehearsals with the student chorus and jazz ensemble for a joint concert with Samite; displayed his collection of photographs in the library and explained that his curiosity of how things work got him started; and performed another concert where he sang and gave explanations about his many instruments, the meaning of the lyrics and encouraged the audience to clap and even dance to his music. Samite is co-founder of Musicians for World Harmony, a nonprofit organization that introduces music to African orphans. He resides in Ithaca with his wife.

Cayuga Community College FoundationThe CCC Foundation Helps Establish Fulton Campus at River Glen

On Friday, September 14, 2012, Cayuga Community College officially dedicated its fourth, and final, home in Oswego County. With an assist from the CCC Foundation, the College took ownership of the former River Glen Plaza on Rt. 481 in Fulton. The ceremony marked the completion of the $16.1 million renovation of the 82,150 square-foot campus in the former P&C grocery store. In late August, the campus opened its doors to 1,100 students at the Fulton site.

“For more than 30 years, CCC has rented spaces in Oswego County,” said CCC President Dr. Daniel P. Larson. “We have gone from a few rented classrooms in downtown Fulton, to the former Holy Family School, to 50,000 square feet in the Fulton Commons mall on Broadway. Today, we finally have a place to truly call our own in Oswego County.”

“As this project began, it became apparent that the College could not shoulder the entire burden,” said Foundation President Lloyd Hoskins. “After many months of meetings with the College, the Foundation decided to take ownership of the majority of the mall.” The CCC Foundation formed CCCF River Glen Holdings, Inc. This wholly-owned subsidiary of the Foundation purchased the major portion of the River Glen

property in Fulton for $9.4 million. “We suddenly were the owner of a 25-acre plaza and 124,000 square feet of commercial storefronts,” said Foundation Executive Director Jeff Hoffman. “We nearly doubled the assets of the CCC Foundation overnight.”

In December 2011, the College kicked off renovation in the former P&C building, which is owned by the College. The Faculty-Student Association of the College developed a vacant storefront as the new bookstore, operated by Barnes & Noble.

A crowd of dignitaries led by President Dr. Daniel P. Larson and SUNY Chancellor Dr. Nancy L. Zimpher cut the ribbon at the River Glen Dedication. Other speakers included alumni John Camardo ’84, College Board of Trustees Chairman, and Terry Wilbur ’08, Oswego County Legislator. David Contiguglia, Vice President of the CCC Foundation, noted, “This is by far the largest investment that the Foundation has ever made in the College. We are excited to have played a key role in securing this new campus for current and future generations of Cayuga students.”

“Long term, our vision is to convert this entire site into a collegiate campus with a green quadrangle, trees, and informal outside spaces,” said Dr. Larson. “The adjoining 45 acres could become athletic fields, student housing or additional buildings. This new space is now our permanent home in Fulton and an anchor institution for Oswego County. Our doors are open to the entire community.”

Bisgrove Brothers Receive National Benefactor AwardJerry Bisgrove of Arizona and Jack Bisgrove of Auburn, principals of the Stardust Foundation and the Stardust Foundation of Central New York, received the 2011-12 Council for Resource Development (CRD) Benefactor Award. Jack accepted the award on behalf of both of them at the CRD Benefactor Awards Banquet on November 11, 2011 in Washington, D.C.

Only ten of America’s 1,200 community colleges receive this award annually. CRD honored the Bisgroves for their outstanding support, including $250,000 for the renovation of

the Irene A. Bisgrove Community Theatre and $1 million for the Stardust Entrepreneurial Institute. “Winners of the CRD Benefactor Award embody the ideals of philanthropy, leadership and volunteerism in the service to community colleges,” said Polly Binns, executive director of CRD.

“The 20th Century brought hard times to our region,” said Jack Bisgrove. “The industries upon which we heavily relied were gone. Jerry and I decided that we had to make a choice: accept our state of decline or move forward. We chose to move forward by supporting the College and other leading institutions that make a difference in Cayuga County.”

The Cayuga Community College Foundation nominated the Bisgrove brothers for the award based on their years of support to the College. They were the lead donors in renovating the College’s 50-year-old theatre which was subsequently renamed in memory of their mother, Irene A. Bisgrove. The Bisgroves also founded the Stardust Entrepreneurial Institute in downtown Auburn and provided major backing for the new Schwartz Family Theater, which will be the centerpiece of the Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival.

“The Bisgroves’ philanthropy has benefitted the College and our students, while inspiring others to give,” said Jeffrey Hoffman, executive director of the CCC Foundation. Hoffman noted that their giving led to an additional $1.2 million in grants for entrepreneurship-related projects at CCC, including $500,000 for the Fred L. Emerson Foundation, Inc. Endowed Chair in Enterprise and Innovation. The CCC Foundation also leveraged the Stardust Foundation’s gifts for $300,000 in matching grants from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation for projects in entrepreneurship.

Plans for Karpinski Athletic Stadium Complex AnnouncedIn 1952, Auburn native and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski Sr. entered a two-year residency at Jersey City Medical Center, where he met his future wife, Floryanna (Honey) Leszczynski. Honey and Dr. Joe married in 1956 and settled in Auburn. Dr. Joe and Honey believed that education was integral to success and instilled that into their own children; five became doctors, one an attorney. They also believed in promoting healthy lifestyles.

On June 11, 2012, Dr. Joe combined his love for education and good health by announcing a half-million dollar naming gift to the Cayuga Community College Foundation from the Dr. Joseph F. Karpinski Foundation. This gift will help fund the Dr. Joseph and Honey Karpinski Athletic Stadium Complex.

“In Cayuga’s 60-year history, we have never had outdoor athletic fields,” said CCC Athletic Director Pete Liddell. “It’s time to give our student-athletes the facilities they deserve.” The proposed $6 million Karpinski Athletic Complex includes softball and baseball fields, and a multi-use field for soccer and lacrosse games. The plans also call for a 1,500-seat stadium, locker rooms, dugouts for softball and baseball, public restrooms and a concession stand.

The CCC Foundation and College will seek $3 million in matching funds from New York State and raise the remaining $2.5 million of the local share through Faculty-Student Association funding, the student activity fee, rental income from the fields, and a fund-raising campaign.

“We thank Dr. Karpinski for pledging the largest gift that the Foundation has ever received from a living individual,” said Dr. Daniel P. Larson. “The Karpinski name has been associated with the College since our founding, so it is indeed fitting that the family name will have a permanent place on our new athletic stadium.”

While details of its exact location are being worked out, the College is working with the Auburn Enlarged City School District on plans for a project to create a cluster of fields to host athletic tournaments, camps, concerts, marching band competitions and other outdoor events.

Dr. Karpinski said that “This stadium will give young people the opportunity to benefit from athletics for years to come and instill in them the life lessons of teamwork, leadership, fair play, sacrifice and self-discipline.”

“Dr. Karpinski has contributed tremendously to the local community, particularly to Cayuga Community College,” said President Larson. He noted that Dr. Joe served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 1977 to 1986 and spearheaded the creation of the College Foundation in 1982. “Dr. Joe has worked tirelessly to secure funding from others and has been a generous donor himself, including a naming gift for Karpinski Rotunda at the College and funding for several scholarships.”

At Cayuga’s 2012 Commencement, Dr. Karpinski received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the State University of New York. This is the first honorary doctorate ever offered through Cayuga Community College.

Matching Gifts

The mission of The Cayuga County Community College Foundation, Inc., an autonomous body, shall be to enhance and provide assistance for educational and other related programs of Cayuga Community College. The Foundation will continually seek to provide growth and improvement opportunities to the College, its students and staff through fund raising activities and through diligent fund management.

M ission Statement

Pictured left to right: Dr. Larson; Sara Miller, 2011-12 scholarship recipient; and Jane and Bill Fox

Matching Gifts Can Double Your DonationMany companies sponsor matching gift programs that can support the CCC Foundation. It typically works like this: a donor gives $100 to the CCC Foundation and his/her employer also gives $100, making the total gift to the Foundation $200. A few companies match gifts made by their retirees or even the spouses of employees! These programs are a great way for a donor to double or even triple their support of Cayuga’s students.

Jane and Bill Fox of the Fox Auto Mall made a gift of $5,000 this year which was matched by the Toyota Dealers Match Program, making their total support $10,000. This was added to the Leo and Elizabeth Curtin Fox Memorial Scholarship. This fund was originally established by the family and friends of Elizabeth Curtin Fox after her passing in 1997; following the death of Mr. Fox in 2005, Leo’s name was added to the scholarship.

To see if your employer has a matching gift program, ask your HR office or go to www.Doublethedonation.com. You will need to fill out a matching gift form or apply for the match via your company’s website.
