Thanks to you, we served more than 9,500 children and families this year. You have entrusted us with your time and your contribu-tions and, as the pages of this report will show, we are using these resources wisely.

As we have done for over 163 years, we continue to provide timely and proven residential care to teens in crises. Today, our residential campus makes up only a small fraction of our work as we concentrate more energy on keeping children in their homes, families, and communities whenever it is safe to do so. Our goal is that fewer children will ever need to set foot on our campus or in our shelters because the interventions we provide can keep them safe at home. Not only is this better for children, but it is better for the health of our communities.

Helping children and teens find a place of permanent love and belonging is our untiring focus and at the forefront of our vision. You make this possible.

The caliber of our work this year has earned us the highest award, the Gold Prize in the New York Nonprofit Excellence Awards. Your support helps us continue to strive for excellence in serving chil-dren and their families.

I hope this annual report on our activities will continue to inspire your support and gen-erosity. I am deeply grateful to you.

Helping children and teens find a place of permanent love and belonging is our untiring focus.

Celebrating Foster Care Month.

Please Note . . .

The names listed in this Annual Report have supported our workthrough financial contributions, gifts in kind, or volunteering duringthe past fiscal year (July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014). We sincerelyhope that this list is complete, but if we have inadvertently omittedyour name, please bring it to our attention at [email protected]. We are grateful to every one of our supporters.

They said he had no one.

Our newest admission was a 5-year old boy born to a mother who struggled with addictions and knew it was best to place her son in foster care. When the boy arrived in CV’s care, he had spent his short life in foster homes, and we were told there was no family and he had no resources.

We refused to believe that this little boy was destined to spend the rest of his life without connections, without family. This was a job for our family finding team, who swooped in using their private inves-tigators and search engines, and found his family. Now, at 8-years old, the boy who had no one has sisters, brothers, aunts, cousins, his mother (who has been drug-free for years), and a brighter future.

Our Family Finding Team reunites children with families.

Our Communities

We are deeply invested in the communities we serve. Our integra-tion into these communities helps to shape our work and mold our future. The majority of our work is in New York City and the Hudson Valley, but our staff work with families across the country and pro-vide consultation internationally. The map below shows our local program locations.

Our Mission

The mission of The Children’s Village is to work in partnership withfamilies to help society’s most vulnerable children so that theybecome educationally proficient, economically productive, andsocially responsible members of their communities.

Social Impact

Children Find Permanent FamiliesSavings: $1.5 million!Family means having people who celebrate your successes, cheer for you when you’re down, and love you through mistakes and setbacks. We all need family, especially children.

This year, CV found permanent places of love and belonging for 48 children, 12 more than last year! This year, New York City gave us a perfect score (100%) for permanent adoptions.

Savings calculation: One year of foster care = $32,000. Finding 48 children permanent families saved $1,536,000 in just one year. The average length of stay in foster care in NYC is 22 months, so secur-ing permanent adoptions means many years of savings.

Teens Avoid Re-Arrest Savings: $2.65 million!Within one year of being arrested, 55% of New York State youth are rearrested. For those who participate in CV’s Harlem Justice Community Program, that number drops to only 15%. By giving teens tools to succeed, such as volunteer opportunities, resume assistance, and work readiness training, they are able to get their lives back on track. This year, we succeeded in keeping 29 of 31 teens out of prison. Not only does this save millions of dollars, but the contribution to their communities is priceless.

Savings calculation: Cost per inmate in New York City prisons = $167,731/year. Cost per teen in CV’s program = $11,591/year. Assumption: 17 teens (55% of 31 teens served) would have been re-arrested =$156,140 x 17 = $2,654,380 in savings by keeping teens out of prison.

Teens Stay Home – Safely Savings: $4.27 million!“Keeping Children Safe and Families Together” is our goal. Of the 36 teens in our Preventive Program who were at risk of removal from their homes, 35 were able to stay at home safely. This success came from engaging the entire family in learning and practicing

skills to support each other. Kids do better at home with families and we’re proud to help them achieve this goal.

Savings calculation: Residential program cost: $130,000/year. Prevention program = $8,000/year. 35 teens kept out of residential care = 35 x $122,000 = $4,270,000.

More Outcomes:• 95% of foster youth in our Bridges to Health Program remained

at home• 98% of youth in our homeless shelter went to a stable home• 94% of youth in our STEP program avoided returning to residen-

tial care• 82% of youth in our WAY Home aftercare program graduated

high school or are still in school with passing grades. • 11 youth in our Adoption Foster Care program started college.• Our Street Outreach team counseled 2,498 runaway, homeless,

and street youth.

Partnering with families for successful outcomes.

Endowment

As of 6/30/2014, The Children’s Village endowment was valued at $12,744,732. In order to continue to grow our endowment, by Board resolution, all estate gifts not otherwise designated are put into the endowment.

Private Support

Most of CV’s revenue comes from government contracts and grants, but government funds often fall short of what is need-ed to run programs that work. Private dollars pay for support for teens who leave our campus with no family, the Canine Training Program in which our teens train dogs for people with physical disabilities, volunteer mentors for kids with no connections, and much more. Thanks to you, The Children’s Village raised $2.5 million for programs like these. We are proud to say that our trustees are committed to raising the needed funds and 100% contribute per-sonally to the Village.

The total cost of fundraising was $344,800, which is 10% of funds raised.1 That means that 90 cents of every dollar raised supports programs and operations. Thank you!

General Support

Gifts not specified for a particular purpose are considered gener-al support and used where they are needed most. Donations for programs or events are listed separately, and donors may appear in more than one section. For that reason, donation amounts may be larger than indicated here. Whatever your gift, thank you.

Your support helps teens get back on track.
