The 2018-2019 concert season of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra had the over-arching theme of the elements: Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. The first four Classics concert sets were each devoted to one of these elements and included a beautiful slideshow of photographs of the elements submitted by patrons. The Classics Series then culminated in staged opera performances of Mozart’s The Magic Flute in April 2019. In this opera, the main characters experience trials of water and fire and there is plenty of symbolism of the four elements.

In addition to the opera and the slideshows, there were many artistic highlights all season long, including:

DUBUqUE SYMPHONY YOUTH ENSEMBLES An educational component of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, the Dubuque Symphony Youth Ensembles (DSYE) is the leading orchestral training program for youth in the tri-state area. The DSYE’s mission is to supplement and enhance music education in the schools, and to promote the highest standards of musical excellence via weekly rehearsals andregularly scheduled public performances. The DSYE program includes four training ensembles:

▶ String Ensemble: an introductory honors ensemble for young string players with at least one year of ensemble experience or equivalent ability.

▶ Wind Ensemble: an honors ensemble for wind, brass, and percussion players. Students have at least 2 years of ensemble experience, and perform at a high school or advanced middle school level.

▶ Philharmonia: a full-orchestra honors ensemble for string, wind, brass, and percussion players. Members generally have several years of ensemble experience.

▶ Youth orchestra: the premier honors orchestra of the DSYE. Students typically have four or more years of ensemble experience and play individually at a pre-college or college level.

98 STUDENTS from throughout the tri-state area were enrolled in the DSYE during the 2018-2019 season

The 2018-2019 season was another great one for the DSO’s education programs! We have continued to deepen and expand our programs, enabling us to serve a greater number of young people throughout the tri-state area.

ADOPT A MUSICIANAdopt a Musician aims to enhance the music education of Dubuque-area students by appointing DSO musicians to serve as ambassadors and teaching artists in theschools.Musiciansare“adopted”bya4thgradeclassroomandvisitthemfivetimes during the school year. They demonstrate their musical instruments, engage students in creative classroom activities and discussion, and encourage students to play a musical instrument. It is a program that has proven very effective and rewarding for the students, teachers, and musicians!
