ACADEMY continues to add new classes such as Building with Electrical Circuits, Kitchen Chemistry, and Video

Game Design.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

EXPLORE externs worked alongside professionals at

Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Coachart, UCLA, USC and more.

Nearly half of public schools have zero funds allocated to advanced learners, while countries like China and India invest millions in gifted and talented children.

This year the Institute for Educational Advancement commissioned the first ever national survey assessing the American public’s views on gifted education. The results indicate that the public recognizes the needs of gifted youth. IEA is working towards initiatives to educate and implement change for this population.

YUNASA & YUNASA WEST campers relished their time together

going on adventures, practicing mindfulness, learning balance, and

making lifelong friends.

Program alumni met throughout the year to connect and build ongoing relationships

with each other, current IEA students, and IEA’s nationwide

network.

CAROLINE D. BRADLEY SCHOLARSHIP recipients

continue to accomplish great things and form a tight-knit community.

This year, one CDB alumna became a Gates Fellow and is conducting

doctoral work in New Zealand; another is a Rhodes Scholar doing

graduate research in Sri Lanka.

Meet Nico

“I wanted to share with you that tonight I saw my son as who he can be, desperately wants to be: a member of a community of

like-minded peers. There is tremendous release in watching him experience that acceptance, and to see him anticipate

something with so much joy.”

Yunasa was a life changing experience for me. I never thought that I could have such a connection with other students, but the other boys in my cabin constantly amazed me with their willingness to explore all sorts of topics the way I did. Before going to Yunasa, I never had amazing conversations and debates like I had there. The people at Yunasa always gave a unique perspective on social experiences, which was fascinating. In my cabin at night, we would have spontaneous trivia time, which was an activity that I can’t imagine taking place at any other camp (especially since it concerned international geography, advanced algebra, and geometry). These experiences were so unique and provided me with wonderful memories that I will never forget. All year I’ve been counting down the days until I can return!

Nico first came to IEA in 2012 when he enrolled in a Chemistry class in the Academy program. As a homeschooler, over the course of the next four years, he went on to take more than 20 Academy classes, including everything from Shakespeare and Mindfullness to Astronomy and Programming with Python. This past summer he attended Yunasa for the first time. Here, Nico, who is currently a freshman in high school, reflects on his Academy classes and his exciting time at Yunasa Michigan.

In traditional school or classes, there is little flexibility for allowing the curriculum or discussion to go in an unexpected direction. This feels confining to me and my brain feels stifled when I can’t explore new learning in creative ways. IEA Academy instructors approach the classes in a very different manner and I felt so much more excited about what I was learning. At the end of each IEA class, I didn’t want to leave and I couldn’t wait to explore the topics further at home. I also admired my IEA teachers and I loved hearing them share what they knew because they were all experts in their field. I constantly found myself wanting to know as much as they did about the topic! I didn’t realize that learning could be this much fun.
