Letter from the Board Chairperson and President

Whitney Jones RoyChairperson, Board of Directors

Michael FloodPresident and CEO

Dear Friends of the Food Bank, Thank you for making 2019 our most successful year to date. Your support allowed us to acquire and distribute nearly 82 million pounds of food and product, the equivalent of 66 million meals for our neighbors in need. Donations from our food partners set a new record in 2019. Our community also continues to be generous with their time; the total number of volunteers exceeded 30,000, the equivalent of the work of 65 full-time employees. Financial supporters of the Food Bank generously provided a record-breaking 16.6 million dollars to help those in our community facing food insecurity. We continued to help improve the capacity of our 600 partner agencies by purchasing commercial refrigerators and freezers, refrigerated vans and trucks, and other equipment needed for their sites. This increased capacity allows our agency partners to acquire, store and distribute more fresh, frozen and other foods helping more people seeking food assistance in their community. Our Extra Helpings Program continues to be an efficient food recovery model for our agency partners to access nutritious food in their neighborhood and distribute the food to people in need. The Food Bank significantly increased service to older adults, college students, families and children during 2019. Our Senior Expansion Program led to new partnerships with more than 100 of our agency partners to reach more older adults in their community. Our Mobile Food Pantry distributions increased at community colleges to improve access to food for students and in other geographic areas to reach more families with children. Our Children’s Nutrition Programs also increased service in 2019, reaching children in after-school settings, community centers and schools throughout Los Angeles County.

Public policy continues to be an important focus for the Food Bank. In addition to increasing our CalFresh Outreach efforts, Food Bank staff traveled to Sacramento and Washington D.C. to advocate for policies that would help those who face food insecurity. Our advocacy work continues at the local level to increase access for all food programs.

Los Angeles County faces many challenges, including having an estimated 2 million people who experience the devastating impact of food insecurity. Yet, Los Angeles County is also home to thousands of generous people like you who have made hunger relief a priority, giving those in our community hope for a better and brighter future. Thank you for your support of the Food Bank to help us mobilize resources to fight hunger in our community.

Best regards,

“More food distributed than ever before, and more people helped than ever before.”

Our donors and volunteers enabled us to help thousands of children each month through our various programs, including: the BackPack Program, the After School Meal Program, the Summer Lunch Program and others. Visit LAFoodBank.org/children for more information.

Supporters of the Food Bank helped us provide after-school meals and food during breaks to children who rely on school meals for their nutrition. The Mobile School Pantry and Summer Lunch Programs each distributed roughly 70,000 meals, and the After School Meal Program distributed 280,000 meals.

The Food Bank also continued to provide nutrition education in 2019, teaching children, their families and seniors about the importance of healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices.

When people, in particular kids, don’t know where their next meal is coming from, nothing else matters and they can’t reach their full potential. Helping Seniors

Almost one fifth of the people who receive food from our programs or through our partner agency network are 60 years of age or older. Without access to food assistance, many of these individuals may skip meals in order to afford bills and medication. Fortunately, thanks to the generosity of our community, food is provided to older adults so they can live longer, healthier lives.

Providing Nutrition to the HomeboundThanks to a generous gift from an anonymous donor, the Food Bank is continuing to expand service to older adults, including those who are homebound. Lydia, for example, receives food each day from a Food Bank agency, delivered directly to her door.

The Doheny Foundation“As a funder committed to improving basic needs for vulnerable populations, the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation is proud to invest in the outstanding work of the Food Bank. They have a deep understanding of the needs of our food-insecure neighbors, serving them efficiently and with dignity.”

- Nina Shepherd, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Financial Officer

All of this is a great big help for those who are in need.

Food From The BarFood From The Bar has raised $4.5 million to fight child hunger. LA’s legal community schedules its

fundraising efforts to replenish Food Bank resources during the summer months – a particularly difficult time for

parents with children who rely on school meals and who lose access to those meals when

school is not in session.

Feed SoCalThe LA Regional Food Bank teamed up with ABC7, Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions, Subaru,

ESPN LA 710 and generous shoppers and donors for the 8th Annual Feed SoCal Food

Drive and Stuff-A-Truck Event, providing enough food for 394,911 meals for our neighbors in need.

BUDDHIST TZU CHI FOUNDATION

Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation was honored with the Food Bank’s Community Partner Award in 2019 and provides a wide variety of services, including food, to its clients. In

2016, the Foundation learned that someone had broken into a school in San Bernardino. They started the program

after discovering that students from the school were breaking into the cafeteria because they needed food.

THE MOBILE FOOD PANTRY

The Mobile Food Pantry (MFP) is on the front lines of hunger relief, distributing directly to clients who have unreliable or insufficient access to adequate food. It is an invaluable resource, particularly in low-income communities without reasonable access to a traditional

food pantry, as well as on college campuses where hunger among students is a growing problem.

With the ability to travel, the MFP can address food insecurity where it hurts the most, while finding homes for fresh, perishable

food items before they go to waste.

Agency NetworkFighting Hunger Takes All of Us

The Food Bank works with a network of 600+ partner agencies, allowing food to be more efficiently

distributed throughout all of Los Angeles County. These partner agencies are critical in the fight against hunger.
