President’s Message
Annual Report 2016-2017
A Message from our President It gives me great pleasure to present the 2016/17 Softball Queensland Inc (SQI) Annual Report. This year has proven to be another successful one for softball in Queensland both on and off the diamond. On the diamond, our representative teams performed very well. In July 2016 the Under 23 Women’s team won the Joyce Lester Shield. In 2017 our men’s teams were outstanding with the Patriots being runners up and our un-der 19, 17 and 15 teams being national champions. Again, the under 15 Boys’ grand final was an all Queensland affair. The Heat also performed well and were runners up in the Gilley’s Shield. Well done to all involved. Special congratulations to Danielle Stewart who was inducted into the Softball Australia Hall of Fame in 2016. Several SQI members were also recognised by Softball Australia Limited (SAL) with SAL Service Awards. They were Bill Buckley, Susan Flynn, Meredith Muspratt and Michael Rigby. Congratulations! Following on from the workshops at the annual conference, the SQI Board and Office have been working together to implement Softball Queensland’s new Strategic Plan to support the growth of softball in Queensland. The new plan details a range of strategies and actions to support the following: • growth in participation; • development of clubs and associations; and • the building of foundations for the future. A number of strategic initiatives are now being progressed as a result of this new plan. SQI continues to provide significant support to SAL and our members and staff fill a range of committee positions with a view to ensuring the growth and development of Softball from a national perspective. I thank everyone involved for their continued commitment to our great sport. I recognise the committed work of our Board, Technical Directorates and Committee members and their willing-ness to work together to achieve the best outcomes possible for softball in Queensland. These volunteers make a significant contribution to our sport; a contribution that should not be underestimated. This year we welcomed Steve Nicol to the Board. I would also like to thank the SQI Office which has provided great support to both the Board and the sport as a whole. We said goodbye to Alexis Hartigan and Erin Sandford and welcomed Kate Bellchambers and Dan Sarmiento. Our Elite Athlete program head coach, Fabian Barlow, has taken a leave of absence to take on the challenging role as head coach of the Aussie Spirit. We welcome Kim Cooper who has taken over the program in Fabian’s absence. I was pleased to work closely with the Board and Staff of SAL on the National Insurance Scheme review this year. The outcome of this project has allowed us to avoid any overall increase in our registration fees. I acknowledge the Queensland Government for their continued significant financial support to softball in Queens-land. I would also like to thank all our sponsors including the Queensland Academy of Sport, Canterbury Clothing, Addlon Trading, Leading Edge Sport and Yellow Cabs. Finally, I would like to thank everyone involved for their ongoing support and commitment to softball in Queensland over the past year. It is greatly appreciated by us all. SQI is in a strong position and I look forward to a successful 2017/18. Mark Jeppesen President Softball Queensland Inc

General Report
Annual Report 2016-2017
Planning for the future has been a major focus for the past year with the development of a new Softball Queensland ‘Towards 2020’ Strategic Plan and the implementation of a number of new strategic initiatives. There has been much to celebrate with volunteers and athletes being recognised for their service and achievements as well as the announcement that Tokyo 2020 will mark the long-anticipated return of women’s softball to the Olympic program. The IOC announced in August 2016 that five sports, softball and baseball (considered one sport), along with karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will be included on the 2020 Olympic program. The original decision to remove softball and baseball was made in 2005 and 2008 was the last time that softball was played at the Olympics. The greatest challenge facing Softball Australia will be to qualify as the number of teams has been reduced to six from the eight in previous games. Queensland is well positioned to take a leading role in supporting the daily performance environment through the generous support of the Queensland Academy of Sport and a range of dedi-cated staff and volunteer coaches ably led by recently appointed national head coach, Fabian Barlow. Fabian is taking a leave of absence from his position with SQI to lead the national program. Softball throughout Queensland continues to be financially supported by the Queensland Government. At the state level, the SSRDP program for 2014-2016 has concluded and the new State Development Program for 2017-2019 commenced. SQ was successful in gaining an increase of $7,800 per annum in the core funding component. In addition, the special initiative application for Strategic Projects – Digital Integration, was also successful. This project requires SQI to contribute 20% of the project costs which will be a total of $14,000 over the three years. Softball associations and clubs were successful in receiving over $200,000 funding through the various programs including the Queensland Government Get In The Game program, Volunteer Grants and the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. An opportunity arose to apply for project funding and Softball Queensland was successful in gaining financial support to undertake the research for the Hub Participation Model which is a key strategic project in the SQI Towards 2020 Strategic Plan. The SQ Hub Participation Model Guidelines / Club Toolkit was finalised in February 2017 and the project plan to deliver four pilot programs will commence in May 2017. At the Board level, we said farewell to John Philp and welcomed Steve Nicol. Our staffing is also undergoing changes with Erin Sandford resigning during the year and Dan Sarmiento joining us in the Development Officer position. In April, Events Co-Ordinator, Alexis Hartigan resigned and her position will be filled in the new year. Joan Jackson, Finance Manager, has transitioned to part-time and Joanne Ashcroft commenced in the part-time Finance Officer position. Special mention is made to the many members of the Softball Queensland community for their contribution to the sport. Thank you to Ipswich, Rockhampton, Redlands, Brisbane, Mackay, Redcliffe and Toowoomba for hosting the 2016 state championships. These championships are not able to be held without the volunteers from our host associations giving their time to make them successful. Redland SA hosted the 2017 Under 19 Men’s National Championship and the Australian Under 15 Boy’s Regional Championship. Their commitment to preparing their facility to the highest possible standard every day and their volunteers for creating such a warm and welcoming environment are the reasons so many visitors rate championships held in Queensland as the best in Australia. Thank you to the dedicated volunteers who give their time at the state level. The SQI Board, Committees, Technical Directorates, Awards Panel, State Team Officials, Commissioners and Member Protection Officers are the backbone of SQI. Our sincere appreciation is also extended to our consultants, Major League Marketing, and lawyer, John Mullins, for their continued support and the staff who work diligently and with good humour to support the District Associations, state teams and the many volunteers at club level to deliver softball throughout Queensland. The District Associations have now completed the first twelve months of the MySoftball Community (Sports TG (formerly FSP) database. While there have been some hiccups along the way, the rollout has been relatively smooth and the uptake of the database by associations, clubs and members has been positive. SQI’s goal is to have each association take responsibility for the training of their clubs and the first point of contact for enquiries from their clubs. To ensure our associations are providing the right information to their clubs there is a need to equip them with the right information and the only way to do this is to provide ongoing training and resources. With changes to be made to the database in the near future, the SQI Board has made provisions for training sessions to be held with each association and their clubs to coincide with the beginning of their season.

General Report
At the 2016 SQI AGM, the members agreed to amend the registration fee categories to align with SAL and to include the SQI, SAL and insurance in a single fee. The net result was that there was no overall fee increase in any category. This was achieved due to all state associations participating in the national insurance program and SAL was able to negotiate the same level of cover but with significant savings in premiums on previous years. The Association remains financially strong and stable returning a small surplus for the year. In addition to the fund-ing received from the Queensland Government, SQI is also supported by the Queensland Academy of Sport, Canterbury International (CCC), Easton, Softball Australia Ltd, our preferred suppliers Yellow Cabs and awards program sponsor Leading Edge. We thank each of them for their continued support of Softball Queensland.
The Queensland Academy of Sport continues to strongly support Softball Queensland through the provision of funding and support services for the elite program. The level of support increased from the beginning of 2017 as a direct result of the re-instatement of softball into the Olympic Games. We sincerely thank Bennett King and Troy Ayers from the QAS for their support of softball. We are looking forward to working with the QAS sport scientists and health professionals to raise the performance level of our athletes and to take the learnings from this program into the other SQI high performance programs and the wider softball community. Softball Australia continues to provide funding to support the Association Co-Ordinator position. During this past year, five (5) district associations, Redlands, Gladstone, Mount Isa, Softball Far North Queensland and Gold Coast participated in the program which assists the associations and their clubs to build capacity and improve governance. Redlands, Gold Coast, and Softball FNQ will continue to be involved in the program during the remainder of 2017. After the session presented by the Skills Alliance at the SQI conference, nine (9) associations and clubs participated in the free training provided by Skills Alliance. Information on these training programs will continue to be distributed and associations and their clubs encouraged to participate. In April 2017 Softball Australia announced that Softball Far North Queensland and Suncoast Hinterland Softball Association, had achieved Homeplate status. This is the ultimate recognition through Softball Australia’s Homeplate Ladder Program, recognising associations that have demonstrated best practice governance, planning, implementation of successful membership growth strategies and delivery of national participation programs such as Softball Batter Up and Social 7s. SAL launched The Homeplate Ladder Program in July 2016. To be successfully awarded Homeplate status, affiliates must meet specific requirements for each criterion and obtain 81 points or more. Softball FNQ and Suncoast Hinterland achieved this ultimate recognition on the back of strong membership growth, meeting all national affiliation standards and delivering national participation programs accumulating a total of 90 points each. Other Queensland associations have reached Going for Home status (51-80 points) and On Base status (30-50 points). Retirements Ted Gross from Redland Softball Association officially retired from umpiring at all levels on 17 July 2016 at 82 years of age. Ted has been involved with softball for over 35 years and will remain involved as the team scorer for the Bayside Bears in various masters competitions. Geraldine Allen (nee Bool) retired from all involvement in softball in March 2017. Gerry has been involved in softball since 1978 and was a founding member in the formation of Wynnum Softball Association. Gerry went on to be a volunteer at club, association and state level taking on a variety of roles. Gerry has been the SQI Member Protection Information Officer and Chief Commissioner as well as a coach and manager of many Queensland teams. Zenon Winters announced his retirement from national representation in April 2017. Originally from Rockhampton, Zenon represented both Queensland and the ACT at the John Reid Shield. He first represented Australia at the Under 19 World Championship in 2001 where the team won the gold medal. He went on to play 113 games for Aussie Steelers including the Open Men’s World Championship in Canada in 2009 where Australia won the championship for the first time. In closing, the new year is now upon us and opportunities to progress the strategic plan and grow our sport continue to be at the forefront of our priorities. Stakeholders will participate in a workshop at the 2017 annual conference to develop a Softball in Queensland Participation Strategy. The strategy will be shared with all associations and clubs so that we can work together on the shared path to building our community and grow participation in our sport.

Recruitment Have a Go Day
Four Have-A-Go days were held around Queensland in conjunction with sign-on activities to help promote softball and recruit new participants. These Have-a-go days were held in Cairns, Rockhampton, Gold Coast and Redlands with over 90 participants. Softball Queensland held a Kids Zone (Have-A-Go day) during the 2017 Nox Bailey Shield and U15 Regional
Championship at Redlands with 20 participants.
Softball Batter Up The national recruitment program Softball Batter Up had another successful year introducing softball to new kids. A total of 4 programs with 26 participants were held at Brisbane (Bears Club), Cairns, Mackay and Granite Belt, as well as one school based program.
School Programs 51 sporting school programs were conducted throughout Queensland with over 3,000 participants School Pathway Programs were run throughout 11 schools with 851 participants.
Swing Into Softball This alternative structure to delivering junior softball creates fun, effective and engaging sessions on a consistent basis. This is achieved by using the game sense approach which uses games rather than drills to introduce the skills of softball to participants. Gladstone and Gold Coast Softball Associations both had a successful Swing Into Softball season this year. These 2 competitions saw a total of 46 children participate in fun games and activities resulting in a positive softball
experience.

Ozpitch/Social 7s The five associations below jumped on board to hold alternate style competitions. These alternate competitions are a great way for District Associations to utilise facilities, increase revenue and bring new participants to the game. Murri Women’s Softball Tournament
The 2016 Murri Women's Softball Tournament took place on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th of October at Redcliffe Softball Association. This was the third year of the tournament and teams were invited from all over Queensland to participate.
“The Murri Women’s Softball Tournament gives you a great sense of pride as an individual, pride in where you come from and pride in your culture.” These are the words of Kelly McKellar Nathan (former Australian and Queensland representative player) at the end of the promotional video that was shot at the 2016 Murri Women’s Softball Tournament. Her comments capture the philosophy behind the Murri Women's Softball Tournament:
• encouraging participation by a group of women who otherwise do not fit into the traditional softball structure (they want to play in family groups, not in ability levels or club teams)
• encouraging participation for fun • recognising cultural diversity • allowing women to dip in and out of softball without having to be registered and playing and training every
week thereby removing barriers to participation such as financial capacity, time restrictions and skill level. This provides a stepping stone for women to tap into the traditional structure if that suits them.
BENEFITS OF MURRI WOMEN’S SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT
The Murri Women's Softball Tournament provides numerous benefits to the indigenous communities in the south of Queensland. These benefits are not restricted to the players. Examples include: Physical, mental and social health Women are able to participate whilst involving family which is important to most indigenous women Opportunity for supporters to assist with team managerial tasks, looking after children, providing food and
general support. This further reinforces the notion of community. Opportunity for children involved over the two days to see their female family members and friends modelling
positive sport and health behaviours Provision for children to participate in supervised activities including softball skills sessions Recognition given to the importance of culture by including indigenous ceremonies and practices

Marketing
SQI marketing consultants, Major League Marketing (MLM), had another very busy year assisting SQI and District
Associations with promotion and marketing of the sport throughout the State.
MLM continued to focus on raising the profile of the sport through the media and social media platforms.
Queensland Heat and Patriots players were profiled in a series of ‘Softball Basics’ videos which were distributed via
SQI’s Facebook page and You Tube channel. The videos were viewed more than 1,500 times and plans are
underway for another series of clips to be filmed.
A regeneration of content and a revamped ‘look and feel’ was undertaken on the SQI website. It is important that our
website is continually monitored and updated to ensure that we remain at the cutting-edge of sport here in
Queensland. Digital content continues to grow in importance and MLM will continue to push SQI down the path of
high impact visual communication.
Six editions of the Softball Queensland e-newsletter Grand Slam were produced and distributed by MLM throughout
the year, as well as over 1,100 media releases. These media releases highlighted state teams, state championships
and national team representatives along with a range of other newsworthy announcements.
MLM have also worked with several District Associations in assisting them with their sign-on campaigns and other
associated events and marketing. This is something that we will continue to develop over the coming year, creating a
‘blueprint’ for the best way to promote the sport around the state.
MLM, on behalf of SQI, have sat on the SAL Marketing and Fundraising Committee for the past couple of years.
MLM provide feedback to SAL in relation to the progression of marketing and the promotion of the sport in
Queensland.
MLM are also assisting in the SQI Digital Integration project which is partially funded by the Queensland
Government Department of Sport and Recreation. This project will provide Softball with a ‘whole-of-sport’
perspective of how technology can positively impact every aspect of the sport.
SQI sincerely thanks Jason Greenhalgh, Rose Dobbs and Danielle Sturgess from Major League Marketing for their
patience, support and guidance during the past year and look forward to working with them to grow our sport.

Queensland achieved the goal of 30% representation in Australian Squads in the open women’s squad (7/23). In the Aussie Steelers squad 20% (6/30) are Queenslanders, Junior Spirit (U19 Women): 25% (7/28) and Junior Steelers squad (U19 Men): 23% (7/30). The achievements of the Queensland teams and individual members don’t come without a very strong commit-ment by a number of people including the coaches, managers, statisticians and in particular the player’s family and team supporters. Softball Queensland sincerely thanks all those involved for their contribution to the suc-cess of our teams. National Staff Appointments Fabian Barlow (head coach), Lisa Anderson (manager), Kelly Hardie and Kym Tollenaere (assistant coaches) were appointed to the Aussie Spirit team for the 2016 world championship, Japan Cup, World Cup of Softball and the 2017 International Down Under Series. Australian Teams at 2016 World Championships and 2016-2017 Events Aussie Spirit finished the 2016 world championship in 10
th place but were more successful in other tournaments
placing 3rd
in 2016 World Cup of Softball and Japan Cup and were runner’s up in the 2017 International Down Under Series. Chelsea Forkin won the Batting Award at the 2017 Down Under Series and with Janice Blackman and six other members of the Aussie Spirit squad, has been invited to join the Chicago Bandits in the 2017 National Pro Fastpitch League in the USA. th in the 2017 NZ Challenge Cup and the Junior Steelers finished in 6
th place at the conclu-
sion of the 2016 world championship. David Metekingi and Maurice Paraha were appointed to the Australian Green and Gold teams respectively as assistant / development coaches. TID & Battery Camp The State talent identification and development camp was held on 28/29 May 2017 at Redcliffe. One hundred and twenty-two invitations were sent with seventy-four accepted. It is pleasing to note that the number of District Association coaches taking up the invitation to attend has increased.
Acknowledgments Softball Queensland acknowledges the continued support of the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS). The QAS increased their investment in 2017 as a result of the re-instatement of softball in the 2020 Olympic Games. The SQ women’s elite athlete program receives a range of health services as well as specialised strength and conditioning training as they prepare for national and international competitions. Queensland Heat were supported by a range of sponsors in their national championship campaign. SQI sincerely thanks the following supporters.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS: Matt Denkel (State Director - Ipswich); Val Cross (Mackay); Christine Denkel (Ipswich); Kirsty Andrews (Hervey Bay); Chris Bailey (Brisbane); Leanne Harvey (Bundaberg) and Christine Jacka (Brisbane) - seconded. This remains a good balance between the South-East corner and regional DA’s. MONTHLY MEETINGS: Meetings were held on the second Thursday of the month by teleconference. The Committee endeavours to have face to face meetings whenever the opportunity arises e.g. all in one place at State or National Championships, Forums etc. Sometimes it is necessary to work around commitments of committee members and this is accomplished through the cooperation of all. ANNUAL COMBINED FORUM: From the feedback received we believe that the scoring component of last year’s Forum was successful. As with last year our first session included a feedback session as to what delegates would like to see discussed along with our current agenda. The information that came from this session provided additional topics that overflowed our agenda. A mini “Train the Trainer” session was conducted on the Saturday afternoon using two of our attendees as ‘students’. Congratulations to our lecturers whose efforts resulted in two new level one scorers. The rules session with Darren Sibraa was beneficial to all; not as many questions for him this year so possibly more scorers are becoming aware of the benefits of knowing the rules. With the spread of levels and experience of delegates we strive to find a common ground where they feel that they are contributing, to as well as benefiting from, the event. While we stress throughout the weekend that the information the attendees receive is for their district association and not just their own personal use, it is disappointing that we still find that not all the information is passed on. STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS: Once again SQI sent a scoring representative to each State Championship. The role of the scoring representative now encompasses having results uploaded to the Queensland website, along with the usual duties of results, examinations if necessary and being available for those scorers who may require assistance. The role provides an opportunity for scorers to readily access experiences personnel.
Scorers Providing Statistics and Play-by-Plays at State Championships: It has been discussed that statistics at State Championships could be graded into the different levels of competition and what is required by the selectors. U15’s requirements differ to information required for the other age groups. A review of this will be undertaken and discussed with the coaching/selecting fraternity. Many thanks must go to the volunteers who officially score the finals at these events so that play-by-plays can go to air.

CLINICS: Not as many clinics were conducted this year. We will work towards improving this situation over the next 12 months. A Level 4 clinic was conducted in Brisbane but to-date there have been no successful candidates. EXAMINATIONS: Successful candidates who have completed their assessments: Reaccreditation: NEWSLETTERS: Val Cross has once again edited our newsletter which is still widely distributed. Ill health this year has seen a decrease in the number of publications. We thank her for persisting with this onerous task. Papua New Guinea still maintains regular contact with Val on matters relating to scoring as well as other topics of interest. As usual Val is always on the lookout for topics of interest and the Committee urges District Associations to forward any items and/or photographs that may be of interest to the wider scoring community. WEBSITE and FACEBOOK PAGE: Christine Jacka always manages to have photos posted to the page and the ‘oldie’ photos always bring comments. Our Website and Facebook page still require a large amount of work to bring them up to where we would like to see them. NATIONAL EVENTS & QUALITY ASSESSMENT: Sean Francis and Fiona Goffer were also appointed as official statisticians in NSW and ACT. State and Development Team appointments were:

Official Statisticians at the U19 Men & U15 Boys National Tournaments: Ngaire Huston continues in her role as National Director and as head of Quality Assessment once again has been checking all games scored at national events.
DATABASE and ACCREDITTION ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: Thank you to Nicole Watts who has worked tirelessly on establishing a workable database. Just when we through we were nearly there, NOAS is changing and this will impact the database once again. GENERAL: The Scoring Committee is very open to having individual scorers or even district associations contact us with any issues they may have or seeking clarification of a scoring scenario. This is hopefully going to be encouraged by setting up our technology areas with a question and answer section. Each delegate at the Forum is given a list of committee members with their contact details and we urge people to make use of these. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all district associations to nominate their statisticians / scorers for the awards that are offered by Softball Queensland. There are many volunteers within your associations who give of their time freely and it would be nice to acknowledge their efforts. Once again thank you to Softball Queensland for allowing me to lead our evolving and enthusiastic group of dedicated statisticians. Matt Denkel

NEWSLETTER The Committee submits articles relating to umpiring in Queensland to “Blues News On-Line (BNOL)”. This publication has a wide audience base and is available by email, although they can also be sourced through resource gallery on the umpiring website. DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS/CLINICS/APPOINTMENTS Basic Clinics A number of District Associations conducted internal clinics. Once again, few requests were received to conduct Basic clinics. This area received continued attention during the 2016 forum, and has become a greater focus with the Committee.

Relationship with Education Queensland The positive relationship between SQI and School Sports continues to be reinforced through the structured umpiring pathway that has been developed. SQI’s Umpiring Directorate has provided management crews to state finals of school competition and has again conducted assessment of candidates at these events. Maddison Needham and Katelyn Bell were appointed to the National Schools Exchange in Geelong during November, 2016. International appointments Queensland has been well represented in the last year with a number of umpires being selected for international ap-pointments: David Casey was appointed to the 2016 Men’s European Championship in Italy, in June, and appointed 2
nd base on
the Championship final. Patricia Sibraa is a member of the ISF Rules Standing Committee. Darren Sibraa is a member of the ISF Rules Commission.

2016 COMBINED TECHNICAL DIRECTORATE FORUM The annual umpire’s forum was held on July 9-10, 2016 as part of the Combined Technical Directorate Forum. During the forum all softball Directorates, Umpiring, Coaching and Scoring, were able to attend a combined session that covered several generic topics. The forum also provided the first opportunity to announce the 2016 Umpiring Award winners to their peers. The re-cipients were: Patricia Bichel Senior Umpire of the Year – Darren Sibraa; SQI Junior Umpire of the Year – Lailani Shepherd; and SQI District Association Development Award – Ipswich Softball Association. A range of topics were covered throughout the forum, including District Association Coordinator responsibilities, com-munication, umpire accreditation and development, exam analysis, state championship responsibilities, and presen-tation of district association reports. Coordinators were also reminded to notify the SDU when there were changes to their roles at the district associa-tions. All delegates were reminded of the requirement to share the forum material with their respective District Asso-ciations. IN CONCLUSION I would like to congratulate all those District Associations that have implemented training programs and conducted clinics within their own association. The Queensland Umpiring Committee continues to work extremely hard, and I thank them for their continued support. Darren Sibraa Queensland Director of Umpiring

2017 Nox Bailey Shield & U15 Regional
Championships
Softball Australia awarded Softball Queensland the honour of hosting the 2017 Nox Bailey Shield(Under 19 Men) combined with the Australian Under 15 Boys Regional Championship. Five states participated in the Nox Bailey Shield competition and eight in the Under 15 Regional Championship which was held at Redlands Softball Association. Softball Queensland acknowledges the commitment Redlands Softball gave to delivering an event of the highest standard. Softball Australia, the participating teams and their supporters praised Redlands Softball on the quality of their facility, the way their volunteers made everyone feel welcome and for creating a warm, friendly environment for all to enjoy the Championship. The perfect Queensland sunshine put a glow over the venue that is hard to match an-ywhere in Australia. Redlands, together with the fantastic SQI volunteers and staff made this Championship one of the most successful national events held. Whilst the competition was fierce, the camaraderie and willingness to help each other made for a very happy and fulfilling experience. Thank you to everyone involved in this event.
