2016 has been a wonderful year for us as a community. In January, we commissioned the Pastor Nominating Committee to begin their prayerful work of discerning who our next pastor will be. We all expect that 2017 will include the welcome of a new Head of Staff! Won’t that be wonderful!

Everywhere I look, we see God’s people energized and galvanized for ministry. In this past year, ministry areas were realigned around our core values of deepening our rootedness in Christ and expanding mission to reach out in Christ’s name. Adult

classes are full. Children are being loved into God’s kingdom. Youth are on fire. Mission is expanding to care for the most vulner-able here in Silicon Valley. Our hospitality ministry is welcoming new people by

the dozens. Our worship is glorifying God!

As we continue to live out God’s call as a community, let’s be spiritually attentive in our worship and work as we wait to see who God will bring to our church to lead us into this next season. Let’s keep praying, engaging, and listening for God’s “yes” as we anticipate another year of God’s fruitfulness to us as a congregation.

Blessings,

Caring Ministryby Michelle VanSickle, Elder

Caring ministry has gone through transforma-tive change the past year. Our name changed from Nurture ministry to Caring ministry to reflect our core mission—caring for people in the congregation. Our purpose evolved through the recent ministry area reorga-nization, which transferred oversight of some areas from Nurture/Caring to other ministry areas. Today the Caring ministry oversees the following groups: Deacons, SAGE (adult luncheons), Spice (50+ singles group), the Pastoral Care Team, and Stephen Ministry. In

addition, we now oversee the prayer team and the prayer shawl group.

Our core purpose for Caring ministry is to be a community that actively embraces, instills hope and positively impacts people in need, so that no one feels forgotten–Christ’s love lived out. Our core values are to be spirit-led, compas-sionate, accepting, loving, and to be present. Our goals include partnering with other ministry areas, expanding existing groups, and brainstorming new areas where the Caring ministry can grow.

Children’s Ministryby Carol Heath, Director of Family Ministries

Children’s ministry is thankful to be celebrat-ing another joy-filled year, working to nurture and support children and their families in their faith. In our ministry being relational through the generations continues to be our number one goal.

We are focused on our core values of faith, fun and friendship and teaching God-centered lessons in exciting, interactive ways that engage our children. Our many programs have been developed, tested, implemented and improved year after year and continue to be successful because of the dedication of our staff and generous and loving, multi-generational vol-unteers. These programs include nursery and child

care, BLAST and Stars Church School, Intersections Church School, LOGOS, Vacation Bible School, Summer Church School, Children’s Choirs, and special events. Some of the programs that have histori-cally fallen under Children’s ministry (for example, Safe Church and Special Needs ministry) are now under the wing of Family ministries (see separate article).

As we think about this past year and look to the future, we are aware of an intentionality to col-laborate with other minis-tries. Our family worship services are a great example of working with Worship ministry to create services that are accessible to all ages. During our August family worship series, as

well as other family worship services throughout the year, children were able to be in worship leadership by reading scripture, ushering, praying and singing. Children’s ministry also has a vision to be more collab-orative with Discipleship ministry, to perhaps bring classes, lectures or other creative ideas to families as they strive to build a foundation of faith in their children. Collaborating with the Youth ministry is always high on our priority list, especially as we more intentionally look at these two ministries under the umbrella of Family minis-tries. As a staff and volunteer team, we are excited about the possibilities that come from working together with other ministries as we believe this is the best way to be the body of Christ. “All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.”

—1 Corinthians 12:27.

Councilby Judi Pogue, Council Chair

Lead Elders of ministry area teams meet each month to assist the Head of Staff in preparing for the monthly meeting of session. In addition to sharing infor-mation about plans being considered by various ministry areas, reviewing the monthly financial report, and bringing matters to the attention of the Head of Staff that need to be consid-ered by session, the Council meetings provide an oppor-tunity for leadership training of members.

In January 2016 Pastor Debbie led a conversa-tion covering spiritual and leadership values, in order to assess how members might want to deepen and develop as leaders that reflect and align with these values. The strategic vision, which was developed from the Mission Study report, was reviewed to remind Council of the wishes of the congregation. Members expressed interest in being able to identify

problems and collaborate, as well as pray together.

During the following months there were oppor-tunities to build relation-ships and to learn about the responsibilities of their role as a lead elder. Members reviewed reports that were being prepared for session, asked questions for clarifica-tion and made suggestions for making the information clearer when it was presented for consideration by session. Such reports included the monthly financial reports, plans for the stewardship campaign, a report on the Radical Hospitality study led by the then Outreach and Evangelism ministry team, and the Pastor Nominating Committee’s process.

Council chair, who serves as the liaison with the Personnel committee, provides periodic updates on personnel issues, such as plans for choosing benefit providers for employees and impending staffing changes.

Leadership training included a session on Assumption Clearing lead by Jennifer Britton in March and a video by DeWitt Jones on Everyday Creativity in June.

During the session retreat held January 2017, ministry teams updated their charters and established their focus and goals for the New Year. Some teams have changed names and responsibility for certain programs has been reassigned to provide for more balance of duties.

The Personnel Committee has been designated a ministry team and will be co-chaired by Council Chair as the Lead Elder.

Reorganization

During the year the ministry area underwent several changes:

In September we •changed our name from “Equipping” to “Discipleship.”

In the fall, we added •several oversight respon-sibilities to our ministry area, including the Men’s and Women’s Retreats, All-Church Camp, Small Groups, Youth Adults, and Presbyterian Women.

Looking Ahead

Looking forward to 2017, Discipleship has developed a series of responses to the Jim Wallis lecture, including a series on what the Bible says about justice (Sundays in January); and, in com-bination with Mission and Service, a series of presenta-tions on immigration and refugees. We are presently at work on revision of our ministry area charter and our schedule of classes, lectures and retreats for the fall. Realistically, the de-velopment of Small Groups and Young Adult programs is dependent on the addition of another Associate Pastor, something we pray will happen in early 2018.

Family Ministriesby Carol Heath, Director of Family Ministries

Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church has always valued children and youth! However, there was some confusion with the names we used for these two ministries: Children’s ministry, and Youth and Their Families ministry. These names might somehow suggest that only youth had families. Or that children and youth minis-tries operated completely apart from one another. This year the staff and session agreed it was time to be clearer with our structure and the names of these ministries. It was decided that we would create Family ministries that would struc-turally serve as an umbrella over Children’s ministry and Youth ministry. I was honored to be named the Director of Family Ministries.

Programmatically, at this time, not much has changed. We continue to have strong children’s programs and youth

programs, with incredible staff serving in each of these areas. The elders and staff over Children’s and Youth ministries will spend some time in the next year looking towards a vision of how families might be more fully supported and encouraged as they navigate the waters of raising children in a faith-filled way.

Areas that now fall directly under Family

ministries include Safe Church, Special Needs ministry and JAM. We hope to begin offering Parent Education and relationship opportunities for families in the future.

The following chart may help to understand the structure of Family Ministries and where each staff member fits in.

Ministry Resourcesby Jon Krogstad, Elder

The purpose of Ministry Resources is to oversee the prudent stewardship of the Church’s financial and physical resources to enable vital and long-term ministry. We accomplish this via monthly meetings (and ad hoc meetings as needed) and working closely with staff to ensure that the Church’s resources (both financial and physical) are being managed in ways consistent with the Church’s goals.

We facilitate the financial health of the church by:

Mission and Service Ministryby Gary Ruschke, Elder

2016 was another active year for Reaching out in Love at Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church. The year kicked off with a Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service that was one of the many ways our congregation demonstrated Christ’s love in the world. Volunteers from SVPC were active with many of our Mission partners by making lunches for Bill Wilson Center and Front Door Ministries, serving at Our Daily Bread, Sunnyvale Community Center, Immanuel House and other Mission partners.

In September, 651

volunteers from SVPC and our partner organizations packed 163,296 meals for people in need in Cambodia during our second annual Feed My Starving Children Mobile Pack. Closer to home, we collected over 10,000 lbs. of food for Sunnyvale Community Services through our

monthly Red Barrel food drive.

In November we once again hosted the Rotating Shelter and the Community Thanksgiving dinner where an army of volunteers fed and broke bread with the homeless. In December, we held an Alternative Giving Faire where the congrega-tion had the opportunity to purchase gifts that bring hope, comfort and support social justice.

The generosity of our congregation was evident in the support we received for One Great Hour of Sharing, the Peacemaking and Global Witness offering, the Christmas Eve offering, and the Mission tithe from the church budget. This

Page 13: Annual Report - svpc.us Report 2016. 2016 has been a ... Beth Robb Deb Sanfilippo Kris Sheridan ... Kyle Thomas Staff Advisor: Ginna Traina Nurture Ministry

to encourage, enable and assist our congregation to be and to make disciples of Jesus Christ through acts of giving, service and advocacy for the welfare of our neighbors and the good of the world.

generosity allows us to support our Mission partner organization, respond to disasters such as the apartment fire in Sunnyvale, and support our PC(USA) Mission coworker, Jonna.

In a year of divisive politics the Mission team scored a major coupe and secured Jim Wallis, author, and editor of Sojourners magazine to speak at SVPC in January of 2017. Jim Wallis’s powerful message to serve the least of these, along with Pastor Karin’s passion for mission, wisdom, and guidance, energized us to fulfill our mission,

The Music School began in 1977 and in 2017 we celebrate 40 years. So this report reflects many years of bringing music to children and their families. Our first enrollment was 13 students and now enrollment ranges from 400–700 during the school year and another 300 or more in the summer. So, thousands of families have learned and celebrated music on this campus.

Walking through classes and lessons, you will see many different cultures in our student population and in our faculty. Our student alumni are making music all over the country and in other countries—teaching, performing, and passing on music to their children. One alum is a professional cellist in Spain. One of the faculty members we trained is offering music in Iran… a challenging situation.

Our fabulous faculty has been at the core of The Music School and includes

The Music Schoolby Doris Harry, Director

new graduates and some teachers who have been here for 37 years. This music ministry has been led by such people as Jan Williams, Peggy Grettum, Debbie Sanfilippo, Jill Denny, Chantelle Urbina, and other master teachers. The school started with a committee with supporters including Bruce Coleman, Dorothy Givens, Barbara Frevert, Ruth Rodgers, Tony Harry, and Don De’Angelo. That initial committee eventually became an advisory board of wonderful people including Bill Grafft, Ed Fraser, Coleen Hausler, Ken Kishi, and too many others to name.

Performance is an important part of The Music School. Our first produc-tion of Hans and Gretel was followed by Charlie Brown memories and today features 140 students in scripts which are written by our teachers. Last year was a significant production with “Voices of America” as we enjoyed a musical look at American music styles through the years and then were inspired by the 140 students rep-resenting the real faces of America. We also do 14 recitals per year, 2 preschool productions, and chamber and scholarship benefit performances.

As a ministry outreach of the church, we continue to be visible in the community, sharing musical performanc-es in hospitals, retirement homes, Alzheimer care facili-ties, and community events. Wow! What a musical ministry. Thanks to all our volunteers, church families, and students!.

Nominating Committeeby Barbara McClellan, Chair Nominating and Elder

We listen to God’s guidance as we work together to identify our church leaders. We seek those who reach out in love just as Jesus did.

The 2017 Nominating Committee will soon start identifying church members to serve as Deacons or Elders for the Class of 2020. We listen to God and each other as we prayer-fully reach out to members of the congregation. Thank you for praying for us and prayerfully considering the call when you are invited to serve.

Presbyterian Early Learning Centerby Grace Randle, Executive Director

PELC is an outreach of Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church. We are a school “where love and learning go hand in hand,” extending our commitment to quality education and care for young children within our church and out into our community.

At PELC learning happens everywhere! Children are given the tools to explore in a friendly, safe and happy place that provides many opportunities for creativity, exploration, adventure and play. And as Mr. Rogers says, “Play is children’s work.” It is a joy beyond measure to witness children as they work so hard in a loving environment with their amazing, creative and oftentimes inspiring play.

You can hear these happy children on the playground running, riding bikes, playing basketball, creating intricate structures in the sand or playing chase with teachers, taking turns,

cooperating, planning, exercising, laughing, all the while growing and learning. The children are trying out new things, learning songs, dancing, building spaceships, cooperating to figure out how to build villages, driving to imaginary lands, and role-playing in dress-up clothes. Everywhere you look there are happy children playing!

PELC offers families a choice of programs to fit each family’s needs. We begin with programs for babies as young as 5 months old for either 1, 2 or 3 days a week. When our youngest children turn 2 we offer part-time preschool for 2’s, 3’s and 4’s. Classes are offered two, three or five days a week with a choice of morning or afternoon. Lastly

we offer full-time preschool for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds.

Every year we consider new ideas and suggestions for programming. As the public schools move to provide preschool for 4 year olds, PELC is changing class offerings to fit the needs of the church and community.

Children at PELC are happy because they are in an environment where they are offered wonderful learning opportunities in a safe, rewarding, quality program with trained, talented and loving teachers.

Welcome and Hospitality Ministryby Jennifer Britton, Elder (formerly Outreach and Evangelism)

Outreach and Evangelism is one of the ministry areas that began a transition into a group with a new name—Welcome and Hospitality—and a more streamlined focus. What remains the same from 2016 going forward is certainly the focus on building and maintain-ing the Kingdom of Christ through being welcoming and inviting in as many places and events as possible. Our goal continues to involve being inviting and warm as we welcome members and new visitors to the campus. We also continue to help the SVPC family regularly to stay acquainted with each other through logistical and hospi-table support for church-wide events and meals.

This marked the last year that we played a role in overseeing the publicity component of our various activities, such as the images that were being used for Easter, Christmas, Advent, Choir concerts. This function

will be handled by the new Marketing Director and we will continue to focus on places to increase our hospitality and welcoming functions.

A major highlight for the year was our intentional look at how we view our own congregation which is changing culturally all the time. We did this by looking inward to our attitudes to the “other” and how this informs hospitality at many levels. Specifically, we hosted a church-wide study around a program titled “Radical Hospitality,” and trained group leaders to walk folks through a 6-week course around understanding ev-erything from racial justice to privilege to creating God’s welcoming place on earth. Approximately 60 people participated in six small groups for this study which deepened our understand-ing about living the gospel amongst and amidst all of God’s people.

Throughout the year we continued to operate the 10 AM Welcome Booth, and set up other welcome tables for events ranging from PELC to VBS, the Holiday Choir event and Trunk or Treat. We also coordinated the second-annual fire pit and hot cocoa after the first two Christmas Eve services. Also continuing for us was assisting with the Annual Meeting, Advent Soup and Sing, the All Church-Picnic in June, Early Light brunch and choir recep-tions. Heading into the new year as the Welcome and Hospitality ministry area, we look forward to expanding our presence and feel on the campus to our guests and members alike.

Worship Ministryby Beth Treitel, 2016 Elder

Worship continues to be the center of our life together as a church community. Each week we have enjoyed messages that draw us near to the heart of God. Some of us worship contempla-tively with Taizé music at

Early Light, some of us enjoy traditional hymns with the choir and organ at the 10 AM service, and still others of us enjoy contemporary music at Intersections. In this past year Intersections moved permanently to the sanctuary so that we may all share the same beautiful worship space.

In 2016 we had oppor-tunities to come together and taste the different worship styles together. On Dedication Sunday in late October we sang the Intersections song We Worship You at all three services. Appropriately the chorus of this song celebrates the goodness and mercy of God “from generation to generation.” This year we

will experience One Service Sunday on March 26 which will be an opportunity to come together in one service incorporating aspects of the three different worship styles.

In addition to the weekly Sunday services, we have

Page 19: Annual Report - svpc.us Report 2016. 2016 has been a ... Beth Robb Deb Sanfilippo Kris Sheridan ... Kyle Thomas Staff Advisor: Ginna Traina Nurture Ministry

had special worship services including Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. These have been powerful services with opportunities to pray around the cross, hear about God’s action in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ, and engage with the Living God.

Usually (hopefully), services run smoothly and the congregation can enter into worship easily. This is because many people

put in hours of planning and praying and inviting volunteers and managing the sound, projection, and recording aspects of each service. We are grateful to all those who volunteer as members of the tech crew, ushers, scripture readers, pray-ers, musicians, and sup-porters of worship. May God continue to faithfully meet us and guide us in 2017!

Youth Ministryby Rita Tharakan, Livvy Nolin, and Kelly Shaver, Elders

2016 was a year of transi-tion for Youth ministry, as we, along with the rest of the church, reviewed our direction. The church as a whole affirmed the impor-tance of youth outreach and the programs of the ministry in the life and identity of Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church.

The highlight of the 2016 calendar was another memorable and transforma-tive Caravan, as our high school youth built homes in Mexico in partnership with

Amor Ministries. While we could document the year in terms of events that catch the attention of the wider church, like Caravan, the Youth and Families party in January, 30-hour Famine in the spring, or Fall Frenzy, it is in the day-to-day FLASH and CLUE programs that relationships with God and each other are nurtured, and the seeds of Christian leadership are planted. And of course, none of this would be possible without a team of dedicated staff, advisors,

and volunteers who bring the programs to life.

We were sad to lose mid-year our youth director Matt Stefan. Kurt Miller stepped up and did a heroic job planning and leading both the middle-school and high-school programs, and juggling worship responsi-bilities at Intersections, while also planning his wedding! We were very grateful for the efforts of TMNT (youth leadership team), the advisors, and everyone else that pitched in and helped to

Page 21: Annual Report - svpc.us Report 2016. 2016 has been a ... Beth Robb Deb Sanfilippo Kris Sheridan ... Kyle Thomas Staff Advisor: Ginna Traina Nurture Ministry

keep the programs running with as little interruption as possible. Scott Petersen, lead elder, concentrated on finding a new Youth Director. With God’s leading Paul Scholz clearly emerged as our candidate and we are so grateful he joined us just after Thanksgiving.

We look forward with enthusiasm to where the spirit will take us in 2017, remembering that we are just the tip of the iceberg that is this ministry.

Financial Reportby Tavie Armfield, Church Comptroller

We have much to be grateful for as we come to the close of another fiscal year ending with a surplus. Because of your generosity we have received more contribu-tions than expected and have even been able to set aside a large amount of funds for the future during the year. The current fiscal year that started April 2016 is expected to end with a surplus around $25,000 because of faithful giving and careful spending.

Looking forward, our estimated giving for 2017 is flat compared to 2016 and reflects that while many were

able to increase their gifts, 25 fewer made a commitment for 2017. Thank you to all who pledged! Faith giving as seen in the chart on the next page represents additional contributions expected based on historical trends.

The current draft budget for our next fiscal year, presented on the next page with the current year’s budget, shows that we will break even for the year.

Generosity continues not only in the increased giving by many, but also in other areas of our ministry. Special Mission Offerings are given in addition to the

budget and usually exceed our expectations. These offerings include One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS), Peacemaking and Christmas Eve. The 2016 Christmas Eve offering went to Our Daily Bread (a local non-profit organization serving hot, nutritious meals to hungry men, women and children) and the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.

We give thanks for the strong, faithful and consistent generosity of our church community!
