Dear Friends and Colleagues –

The Cable Center’s programs reflect the vibrant nature of an industry on the cutting edge of communications technology. In 2012, The Center continued the Cable Mavericks Lecture Series and the Cable Mavericks Mas-ters Forum in New York City. The Lecture Series allows senior cable executives the opportunity to interact with college students on a university campus and explore issues in business and telecommunications. We extend our special thanks to Dr. John Malone (at the University of Denver); Julian Brodsky (at Columbia University); and Michael Smith (at Columbia University), for sharing their time and knowledge with the students. Our stu-dents always end the session charged with excitement and energy…and they learn along the way as well.

The Cable Mavericks Masters forum continued into its second year with record attendance. The students queued in front of The Paley Center two hours before the event and filled the venue to maximum capac-ity. The audience viewing the streaming feed topped 1,350 from both domestic and international sites and universities, representing a huge increase compared to the previous year. Students want to learn about our industry and are eager to discover ways of getting their foot in the door. We give our special thanks to Evan Shapiro for chairing the committee, acting as master of ceremonies and helping to line up the prestigious panel of cable executives. Video from the panels are available on our website.

At the NCTA Cable Show in Boston, we inducted six new members into the Cable Hall of Fame: Ann Carlsen, Leo Hindery, Larry King, Debra Lee, Gerry Lenfest, and Phil Lind. In addition, our good friend Alan Gerry re-ceived the venerable Bresnan Ethics in Business Award. We extend our congratulations to all of our inductees and sponsors for a record-breaking event. Also at the NCTA Show, we held our Academic Community (ACT) Forum for university faculty. We are grateful to Dr. Mike Wirth from the University of Tennessee, who inter-viewed Michael Powell for the opening session. We recorded all of the sessions and they are currently on our website.

Finally, 2012 represents the end of a very successful business plan. In the last six years, we stabilized The Center’s financial condition and developed a successful set of programs. At our September board meeting, we introduced a new conversation that will lead us to a fresh business plan by the end of 2013. As the cable industry changes, so will The Cable Center. We look forward to the robust discussion and the possibilities it may bring. We sincerely hope you will help us shape the future of The Cable Center through your input and contributions.

Best regards,

Jerry Kent Larry Satkowiak Board of Directors Chair President and CEO

In its 15th year, the Cable Hall of Fame was once again a resounding hallmark eventwith a memorable evening that celebrated those who have made a remarkable impact on the cable industry. Now a high-profile part of the NCTA Cable Show, the elegant event held on May 21, 2012 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place was a monumental success.

Since the first ceremony in 1998, just 96 individuals have been inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame. To be considered, candidates must have contributed significantly to the growth and develop-ment of the industry. They must exhibit leadership at the highest level – both professionally and personally; and they must be deeply involved with the cable industry’s people, organizations, and institutions.

The 2012 festivities were the culmination of exceptional efforts by many dedicated individuals, including the members of the Cable Hall of Fame Selection Commit-tee, the Bresnan Ethics in Business Award Committee, The Cable Center Board of Directors, and the Honorary Board of Directors.

Cable Hall of Fame Class of 2012More than 600 guests enjoyed the fabulous hosting of master of ceremony, Katty Kay, Washington correspondent and anchor for BBC World News America. Accepting their recognition, honorees commented on the special place cable holds in their hearts and in the annals of American entrepreneurism.

Bill Bresnan Ethics in Business AwardHighlighting the Cable Hall of Fame celebration, Cable Center board chair, Jerry Kent, pre-sented the second annual Bill Bresnan Ethics in Business Award to past Cable Hall of Fame inductee, Alan Gerry. Created in partnership with the Bresnan family, the award recog-nizes stellar individuals and honors Mr. Bresnan’s lifelong commitment to integrity and outstanding ethics in business practices. 2000 Cable Hall of Fame inductee,

Page 10: Annual Report · the cable industry. Now a high-profile part of the NCTA Cable Show, the elegant event held on May 21, 2012 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place was a monumental success.

Through its successful Cable Mavericks® Lecture Series, The Cable Center has been connecting the cable industry with students on university campuses across the U.S. since 2005. Once again, it was another banner year for Cable Mavericks Masters Forum known as the “One Day Degree in Cable.” Two hundred and fifty students attended the event in the Big Apple on October 26, with more than 1,350 attending via streaming sites; representing an increase in attendance of 30 percent from the previous year and our biggest academic endeavor to date.

Highlights of the day included panels regarding the changing role of re-search and opportunities in television programming - a rousing discussion ensued about why and how this happens. Interactive learning sessions included an “Ask Me Anything” lunch with industry executives conducting mock interviews.

Evan Shapiro, President of Participant TV, served as Masters Forum Com-mittee Chair. He provided inspiring leadership and spearheaded a creative dy-namic within the dedicated Committee. Thank you to our sponsors and Commit-tee members for their generosity and diligent efforts. “I am so impressed with the dedication and commitment of the panelists and committee members, many of whom went above and beyond the call of duty”, Shapiro said several times during the day’s activities.

Students, professors and participants gave this year’s Masters Forum two thumbs up! Here are some memorable highlights:

• We had 250 students in attendance; a full house with overflow seating

• We had over 1,350 streaming sites watching online which is a 30% jump from 2011

• We once again recruited eight student ambassadors from Northern Virginia Community College, lead by Professor Lucy Holsonbake

• The Production and Creative Panel gave students an inside view of the cable programming business; how the creative side of television intersects with the business side

• We expanded our Career Resource Sessions by adding 10 career media tables, and by hosting an executive roundtable lunch and offering more executives to participate in mock interviews

The Cable Mavericks Lecture Series continued to engage the best minds in the industry and included the following executives:

• Michael Smith, General Manager of the Cooking Channel spoke to the Columbia Business School - 45 students from the Media Management As-sociation program gleaned tremendous industry insights from the program perspective.

• We were delighted to host Dr. John Malone, Chair of Liberty Global. Dr. Malone spoke at the Univer-sity of Denver’s Daniels College of Business where he captivated the strategic finance class with his perceptive advice regarding business strategy and finance management within the corporate environ-ment.

• Julian Brodsky, Founding Partner of Comcast Ven-tures and Founder/Director/Vice Chair of Comcast Corporation, spoke to the graduate students at Columbia University about the fledgling years of Comcast and the keys to cable business success over the past decades.

The 2012 ACT Forum was held on May 20-21 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center on the eve of The Cable Show. Attendance ranged from 30 to 60 throughout the day and included NCTA’s President and CEO, Michael Powell.

The DeSorrento Internship Program honors the memory of Justin DeSorrento by identifying motivated students who are interested in entering the cable industry. The program funds paid internships, giving students the opportunity to work in cable, learn about industry history, evolution, and current issues, and interact personally with senior-level cable industry executives. In 2012, the Justin DeSorrento grant was awarded to eight students from Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA).

For students, historians, and cable professionals, The Cable Center’s Barco Library is the world’s leading resource for information about the cable business. Offering an industry retrospective from 1948 to the present, the library is home to a rich collection of resources that can’t be found any-where else.

The Barco Library also supports the overall mission of The Cable Center as the ultimate home for primary source materials of cable history and current industry milestones. The resources include more than 325 oral histories, intriguing personal pa-pers and business records, extensive photographs and video, fascinating and eclectic artifacts, trade press magazines dating back to the 1960s, and an archival cornucopia of equipment.

Our wide array of users included: •NCTA•C-SPAN•Liberty Global•Comcast•Time Warner Cable•BuckEye Cablevision•BCAP•Multichannel News•The Vancouver Globe & Mail•The New York Times; including columnists Kagan, Kennedy and Genzlinger•Utah State University Library•Three law firms working on intellectual property cases•Students researching their History Day projects•Researchers working on a history of Continental Cablevision•A graduate student writing a dissertation about Yolanda Barco

Substantive additions were made to the oral histories collec-tion when three panel discussions and two interviews were recorded at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in October. Also, two panels relating to the history of the Cable Television Pioneers were filmed in our studio in August.

Barco Library

We were fortunate to receive several outstanding donations during the year that will considerably enhance our collections. These included equipment, artifacts and printed material rela-tive to Qube, Showtime, MTV, Liberty Global, CTAM, Avantek, General Instruments, and CableLabs. At the very end of the year, Steve Nelson generously donated an enormous quantity of videotapes documenting The Cable Channel and other related endeavors.

The digitization process continued as a labor of love with the dedicated assistance of volunteers from the local library com-munity and practicum students from the University of Denver Li-brary and Information Science program. This involved scanning the images from prints, slides or negatives, and then applying relevant metadata for inclusion into our digital asset manage-ment system. There are now more than 3000 images available that can be viewed online, including functionality for panning,

zooming and searching by name or keyword. Copies can be readily obtained by email request using the unique identifier for each image. We have received many photo orders as a direct re-sult of people finding images online at our photo site at archive.cablecenter.org.

Since 2006, The Cable Center has played an increasingly vital role in the cable industry’s continuing mission to better serve customers. Today, The Center’s customer care programs highlight industry dedication to the customer experience and enhance participants’ efforts to deliver on that commitment.

C5

At the request of NCTA, we held a special webinar for top MSO customer care execu-tives (C5 group) on live streaming of the 2012 Olympics. Our goal was to highlight the best practices and challenges so that we would be prepared as an industry to solve any authentication issues experienced by our customers. As Rob Stoddard noted, “there are dozens of...cable operators and MVPDs that will be involved in provisioning and servicing ‘TV Everywhere’ users who are coming to video coverage of the Games through multiple platforms. It is hoped that this webinar will help companies provide a positive authentication experience for customers during the Games.” In fact, one of the best practices noted by the Comcast team was to use The Cable Center and C5 as an information-sharing resource. During the opening days of the Olympics, we facili-tated authentication problem solving for several MSOs.

We also hosted two special sessions for cable care executives on September 5-6. Requested by the C5 committee, the first day was a deep dive into up-selling for increased revenue. The second day was focused on speech anayt-ics, which is a new innovation in customer care.

Cox Customer Experience Management MBA Concentration

The Cable Center’s support of CEM extends into academia. As administrator of the Cox Customer Experience Management MBA concentration at the University of Denver Daniels College of Business, The Center is deeply involved in a unique pro-gram whose circle of influence continues to expand. As part of our work to enhance CEM as an academic field of study, University of Denver professors Ron Rizzuto and Charles Patti are conducting original research to measure the lifetime value of indi-vidual customers and evaluate how to increase it. Their case studies, co-authored with Jana Henthorn, will clearly establish the ROI of customer experience efforts.

The CustomerExperience

Annual Report 12

Page 15: Annual Report · the cable industry. Now a high-profile part of the NCTA Cable Show, the elegant event held on May 21, 2012 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place was a monumental success.

Jana Henthorn, Ron Rizzuto and Charles Patti were invited to discuss their work at the AMDOCS Forum in London, where they established valuable relationships with European MSOs, Ziggo, ONO, Virgin Media, Cable & Wireless and Liberty Global UPC.

On this side of the Atlantic, our customer care panel at the NCTA show in May was led by Jana Henthorn and was well received. Drawing upon the research described above, panelist Ron Rizzuto demonstrated that investments in CEM are more than the “right thing to do” — they enhance the bottom line, by simultaneously reducing operating costs and increasing revenue.

Other 2012 Customer Care activities included:

• A two-day C5 meeting in April• Webinars on speech recognition software, global multi-

channel optimization, and customer lifetime value• At the University of Denver, Daniels School of Business, we

continued to feature speakers for the MBA, CEM program• Collaborated with Multichannel News and our C5 sponsor,

AMDOCS, on a special publication, “Innovation in Customer Care”

“Cable is one of the few industries that can share best practices so openly. C5 allows MSOs to have an orga-nized forum to share best practices which improve the customer experience across the industry.” Gibbs Jones

Senior Vice President, Customer Experience, Suddenlink Communications
