Of the many things large and small to celebrate at WMS last year, three of the most historical

milestones stand out. In all three cases, it is thanks to your generous giving beyond tuition payments, and the dedication of our wonderful staff, that we reached the milestones. The first three high school seniors to attend all four grades of high school graduated! One was a “WMS lifer” who attended WMS from age 3-18. One received a Washington State Honors Award for being

in the top 10 percent of 2017 Washington state high school graduates. Two were National Merit Commended Students. The whole class averaged in the 95th percentile on the SAT and ACT test scores. All three students received multiple academic scholarships from the multiple colleges and universities to which they were accepted. We have always known that we have a very strong academic program, and are happy to have concrete evidence for those who would like more than our word that a) Montessori works extremely well for high school and b) that investing in an independent education is a very good financial, as well as an educational, investment in their child’s future. Another achievement was the expansion of team sport options beyond Middle School orienteering. We had enough players from Upper Elementary and Middle School to create volleyball, basketball and soccer teams. The students greatly enjoyed opportunities to play against teams from other schools. Theresa Kirby, our Director of Auxiliary Programs and Athletics, dedicated a significant amount of her time and ingenuity to finding locations and coaches, and coaxing students to sign up until

we reached minimum numbers. We want to recognize her, along with staff members Carlos Valencia, Jessica Sealana and Emily Schlieman for stepping forward to help with coaching. Thanks also goes to all the parents who encouraged their students to participate and came along to cheer the team games, keep score and help in other

ways. We are gradually developing this program, to make options available for younger and older students as their numbers and league rules allow. Our Innovation and Design lab opened in Building 2 at North Creek. Developmentally-appropriate activities in coding, engineering and circuitry were added to programs for Early Childhood through Secondary. Funds from the previous year’s gala allowed us to equip the lab with a 3D printer, laser cutter, soldering tools, Lego Mindstorms, time-lapse camera, many hand tools, organizing bins and design software. FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

(FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL continued fr. pg. 1)

The first technological “upgrade” to a longstanding Upper Elementary curriculum project was the change from the tried-and-true salt maps for

the Island Project to 3D contour maps, plotted on computer and cut layer-by-layer with the laser cutter. Secondary students enjoyed a MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education) elective class which took marine robotics projects started the previous year to an advanced level. Early Childhood and Lower Elementary classrooms had access to Snap Circuits, Cubeto and Cubelets for classroom check-out. A working aquaponics project, which began as a demonstration project operated by another nonprofit, adjoins the ID lab. Bryce Aktepy took over management of the system in May, harvesting enough fish to provide fish tacos for the final faculty meeting in June. The ID lab remained a focus for the May 2017 Gala, allowing for additional expansion in the current year. Thank you for making this all possible!
