A letter from the President The Cayuga County Community College Foundation, Inc.

Dear Friends of the CCC Foundation,

As a people, we have a tendency to look at the world in bits and pieces. Our news arrives in stunted sound bites. Tweets and texts have replaced face-to-face conversations. How refreshing it is, as President of the Cayuga Community College Foundation, to ask you to look beyond the bits and pieces to see your contribution to this Foundation as a part of a bigger picture.

Our Annual Report contains plenty of lists, charts and highlights. While I encourage you to look at these details—or at the very least, to find your name in the Honor Roll of Donors—I also invite you to look at the information given from another perspective. Ask yourself, what does the CCC Foundation mean to you? For some, it is that scholarship in memory of a loved one and the impact it has had on students’ lives. For others, it is the grants that the Foundation provides for the College’s faculty. And for some, there is only the Foundation’s Statement of Financial Position.

Cayuga Community College means different things to the people in the many communities we serve. But what drives you to give of your time and resources? Is it the Liberal Arts or Technical Education? Auburn or Fulton? Nursing or Criminal Justice? Accounting or Telcom? Personal Development or Economic Development? Whatever the answers may be for you, the positive result is beyond question.

The Cayuga Community College Foundation is the largest community college foundation in New York in terms of dollars raised per student. It is a vibrant Foundation that supports new initiatives in entrepreneurship and other fields of study resulting in thousands of students and alumni who make our region a better place to live, work and raise a family.

On behalf of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, I personally offer you my sincere gratitude for your tremendous support of the Cayuga Community College Foundation and ask that you journey with us as we plan for the future.

Gail CowleyPresident, The Cayuga Community College Foundation, Inc.

Support to the CollegeThe Foundation provides support to the College in two forms: 1) scholarships, awards and grants to students and 2) support for academic and other College and community programs. The Foundation had another good year receiving gifts and grants from many individuals, foundations and organizations.

Support to StudentsIn the past year, the Foundation received funds to create the following new commencement awards and scholarships:

The Estate of Eloise Cool established the Thomas and Eloise Cool Memorial Award. Mrs. Cool taught for many years at Seward Elementary School and was passionate about the need to educate all children regardless of background or abilities. The Cool award will annually be given to a graduate demonstrating academic excellence in his or her field and who intends to continue an education at a four-year institution in the field of humanities.

Friends and colleagues at the Auburn Memorial Hospital Emergency Care Unit funded the Lisa A. McLoud White Memorial Scholarship. Mrs. White was a graduate of our nursing program and employed by the hospital in the emergency room until her untimely death due to domestic violence. This award is given to a self-motivated, returning sophomore in the nursing program who is studying at the Auburn campus. Strong preference is given to a student who has some previous experience in the healthcare field, ideally a Nurse’s Aide or LPN. Preference is also given to a single person.

Mr. Louis Alfieri created the Madeleine Alfieri Memorial Nursing Award in memory of his wife. This award is given to a nursing graduate who excels in the art of nursing as evidenced by the demonstration of kind, caring and compassionate interactions with others. This individual strives to make a humanistic difference within a complex health care environment.

Cayuga Community College’s Professor of Physical Education, Linda A. Rooker, created the Linda A. Rooker Nursing Scholarship. This scholarship is given to a nursing student in good academic standing at the completion of Nursing 102, who demonstrates the art of nursing as evidenced by the use of caring, nurturing and thoughtful behaviors. Linda in the year 2000 also established the Dorothy M. Rooker Award in honor of her mother.

Family, friends and colleagues created a commencement award in memory of Joseph A.M. Camardo, Professor of Business at Cayuga Community College for almost fifty years. The Professor Joseph A.M. Camardo Memorial Award is given to a graduating Cayuga County resident who will be attending a four-year college to pursue a degree in the field of business.

During 2009-2010, the Foundation provided $415,836 to the College and to the community through awards, scholarships, campus improvements and other awards including the following:• $214,473 for 324 Scholarships and 64 Commencement Awards to diminish some of the unmet need of $9,333,099 for 2009-2010.• $23,061 in Faculty Grants for the Emerson Endowed Chair and one Summer Fellowship.• $22,151 for Capital Improvements• $124,782 for Program Grants

Student Testimonials“As a recipient of the Jackie Wise Memorial Scholarship, I will be able to reduce my work schedule and spend more time on my studies here at Cayuga. This scholarship will assist me in paying for my books for the upcoming semesters. As a working student, I am thankful for any assistance received.”

Anthony J. Spinelli – Jacqueline Kellogg Wise Memorial Scholarship

“I am so incredibly grateful to be the recipient of the Joseph W. and Margaret G. Pine Memorial Scholarship. Trying to get through my senior year of nursing school at Cayuga Community College is challeng-ing as is, and adding in trying to raise my three-year-old daughter makes it even more difficult. This scholarship will help to relieve some of the financial stress that college has placed in my life, and I am very appreciative to be selected as the recipient. This scholarship helps put me one step closer toward my ultimate goal of becoming a registered nurse, and I am extremely thankful to have been chosen to receive it!”

Sharon R. Lupien – Joseph W. and Margaret G. Pine Memorial Scholarship

“The Jack M. Hayden Jr. Memorial Scholarship has helped me considerably by covering educational costs that I would otherwise have to get a loan for. This scholarship has helped me financially and its continuation will undoubtedly help future recipients.”

Brian F. Barczewski – Jack M. Hayden Jr. Memorial Scholarship

Support to the College

Program SupportProgram support provides funding for faculty, staff and our community:

• Instructional Equipment Fund was unable to provide any funding in 2009-2010 due to this endowed fund being under water as the result of lower earnings.

• The Library received monies from the Library Collection Fund and purchased fifteen local and state history books including: Harriet Tubman: The Life and Life Stories; Elizabeth Cady Stanton; Harriet Tubman: Imagining a Life; Queen of the Mist and Inventing Niagara.

• Cultural events are made possible with funds from the Ruth P. Thomas Arts Fund, the Noreen and Michael J. Falcone lecture series and the Cultural Enrichment endowed fund. None of these funds were expended in 2009-2010 in anticipation of Ed Asner’s performance of FDR in early October of 2010.

• Special Projects and Development Grants provide faculty and staff members the opportunity to attend conferences, explore possible new programs and develop new intersession courses. Jean Siracusa received a Summer Fellowship Grant from the Foundation. The title of Jean’s project was, “The Application of Collective Thought Processes, Discovery and Innovation in the Implementation of a Culture of Sustainability.” Students developed a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of the hydrologic system. In the future Jean would like to develop a class or degree program in this important subject. Jean states, “John Todd’s work has been my inspiration to learn and to develop lessons based on ecological design. His work demonstrates how biology and ecology are interconnected with everyday life.”

CCC Foundation Supports the Stardust Entrepreneurial InstituteThe Stardust Entrepreneurial Institute (SEI), a partnership created to spur economic and social progress in the region, held a dedication ceremony at its newly renovated building in downtown Auburn in 2009. On hand to show state-level support for the Institute were New York State Senator Michael F. Nozzolio; Chancellor of the State University of New York Nancy L. Zimpher; and Vice Chancellor for Community Colleges Dennis Golladay, former president of Cayuga Community College.

The SEI will offer programs, services and activities to support business and professional development in the region. The three-story building at 2 State Street houses five business incubators for start-up businesses, as well as an internet-wired Smart Classroom for community use, and will include a Grant Writer’s Library. The building also serves as the home of the Stardust Foundation of Central New York.

As founding partners, the CCC Foundation and Cayuga Community College helped to shape the SEI’s concept. Working with the community, the SEI will foster the next generation of local entrepreneurs. The College offers credit-bearing courses with an entrepreneurial “infusion model” which brings innovative thinking to students in many disciplines throughout the College.

Funding for the SEI included the First Niagara Bank Foundation, state assistance through Senator Nozzolio, the Stardust Foundation in Arizona, and the Stardust Foundation of CNY. These grants have been leveraged to support e-ship education at the College through matching funds from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation of Kansas City. The Kauffman e-ship grants are coordinated through Syracuse University, the lead agency for this grant.

CCC Foundation Supports the new “Cayuga University Center”

Start Here – Stay Here – Succeed HereSince its founding in 1953, Auburn/Cayuga Community College has never offered four-year baccalaureate degrees, as this is not within our mission as a community college. Even so, CCC recognizes that local residents have very limited access to four-year programs within easy driving distance. The numbers tell the story: about 27% of all NY residents, aged 25 and above, have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. Locally, that number is only 15%.

Seeing this lack of access as an opportunity, CCC created a University Center in partnership with several four-year colleges. These colleges offer bachelor’s and even master’s degrees at our Auburn Campus. In 2009-10 our partners included Keuka College, Morrisville, Cazenovia and SUNY Empire State College. We hope to partner with Excelsior College in the future.

Michael Greene, Coordinator of the University Center, noted that “this outreach does more than increase access to higher education. Increasing the number of residents with four-year degrees has a proven, positive impact on economic development. Our goal is to provide a seamless transition to four-year degrees without people having to leave their families, jobs and communities.”

In 2009-10, the CCC Foundation provided $65,632 in support of Cayuga’s University Center. For more information on the University Center, contact Michael Greene at 315-294-8567 or [email protected].

Cayuga Community College FoundationFollowing a one-year hiatus, the Presidents’ Circle dinner returned in all its glory to the Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles. The dinner honors the many individuals, foundations and businesses whose support makes our success possible. Members of the Presidents’ Circle make annual gifts of $1,000 and above to the Foundation. We also thank our Benefactors who have made a gift of $10,000 or more in any given year.

Faculty and staff making gifts to the Foundation in 2009-10 doubled due to an innovative fund drive “chaired” by George Washington. Our work was recognized with the 2009-10 Best in Category Award for annual funds among all 64 SUNY campuses. In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the ACC/CCC Alumni Association, we ran a special “50 Dollars for 50 Years” campaign that attracted many new donors.

Generous donations were received from foundations, including the Allyn, D.E. French, Columbian, Emerson, Stardust and the Stanley W. Metcalf. Additional support came from alumni, faculty, staff, businesses, organizations, trusts, friends and memorial gifts.

ACC/CCC Alumni AssociationWith each passing year, the ACC/CCC Alumni Association thrives and continues to grow. Its reputation of being one of the strongest associations of its size in the SUNY system has been earned and well deserved. These accolades wouldn’t be possible without the commitment received from our graduates and friends. Connections are a priority, not only with our past alumni but looking ahead to welcome and engage our future alumni. We encourage our members to remember their days at ACC or CCC and reflect on how their education positively affected their lives while engaging our current students whenever possible.

The fall 2009 edition of The Spartan alumni newsletter was a special anniversary edition to celebrate our fiftieth anniversary. Additional pages as well as many color photos were added to the format in a scrapbook layout that highlighted people and events from the past 50 years. The annual fall appeal carried the same scrapbook theme and celebrated our reputation for excellence and national acclaim.

Honor Roll of Contributors (alumni) 2009 - 2010

Page 15: ANNUAL REPORT Year Ended August 31, 2010 · The Professor Joseph A.M. Camardo Memorial Award is given to a graduating Cayuga County resident who will be attending a four-year college

Dear Friends of the CCC Foundation:

It’s always a pleasure to share the Cayuga Community College Foundation’s Annual Report. While the numbers give you a broad overview of our success, our students tell the real story. The CCC Foundation is in the business of changing students’ lives through the giving of alumni, foundations, businesses, employees and many other friends.

More and more people are finding that estate planning can help them make significant contributions to the causes they love. Over the past six years, 21 people have indicated their wish to support the CCC Foundation through their wills and estates; I hope that you may consider the benefits of planned giving in the year ahead.

Gifts to Cayuga’s Legacy Circle may provide significant tax savings or other financial advantages to you. Planned giving also enables you to express your strong belief in the future of Cayuga Community College by making a special gift to the CCC Foundation.

All gifts to the Cayuga Community College Foundation help our students build brighter futures for themselves, their families and their communities. Thank you again for your support in the past year. Please contact me directly at (315) 294-8627 if I may ever be of assistance.

Best regards,

Jeffrey L. HoffmanExecutive Director
