A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR GENERAL

It gives me pleasure to share with you the achievements of the Royal Health Awareness Society during 2017 through this annual report. 2017 was quite an eventful year for the Society on many levels.

Our programs have taken long strides both in terms of scale and impact. The Healthy Schools program continued to grow in number of schools joining the program, and about 80% of the schools enrolled successfully received the accreditation, reflecting positively on schools’ health environment and students’ healthy behavior. It was the first time in 2017 that we celebrated our Healthy Schools differently; through building capacity, sharing success stories, and collaboratively putting ways to overcome challenges. We have streamlined our schools’ projects under the umbrella of the Healthy Schools to ensure a comprehensive approach and maximum benefit.

RHAS initiative “Generations Protected” from risky behaviors of addiction and substance abuse, continued for the second year reaching 500 schools’ students, counselors, and parents, through two of its projects (Unplugged and Anti-Smoking Ambassadors). We have also embarked on the first cycle of the ‘Mentor Arabia Youth Short Film Competition’, and with Mentor Arabia, co-hosted the final award ceremony in Jordan with the participation of 8 Arab countries.

Nutrition remains to be an area of focus to

RHAS. We have continued with the joint collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the World Food Program, on the school feeding project “The Healthy Kitchen”, successfully establishing 6 new kitchens to the existing five, in order to serve a total of 55,000 students with daily healthy meals, while creating 270 job opportunities (mainly for women) in the underserved local communities.

As for our “Shababna: Youth for Health” program, we are proud that it was able to continue with its institutionalization within two of the main public universities in Jordan, while expanding to a third one during 2017. RHAS has also participated in two research projects conducted in both universities to study the impact of the program on students, with a focus on reproductive health.

Empowering patients with NCDs and those at risk to control, prevent incidence and complications of chronic diseases, the Healthy Community Clinic program (in collaboration with MoH) was able to impact the lives of another 1300 persons, (at least 30% of which are Syrian refugees in host communities).

The program’s new partnerships opened the door for integrating new modules to the awareness sessions including mental health, and a research project has been initiated to study the impact of the HCC and the effect of adding this important topic to its services.

Our monitoring and evaluation department continued to track performance, successes, and challenges, to feed into our learning and development.

On the strategic level, we have launched the RHAS 2018-2020 strategy review process, setting our direction, priorities and objectives for the coming three years, inspired by Her Majesty’s vision and leadership towards healthier Jordanian generations and community.

Moreover, we were successful in leading advocacy efforts in the areas of tobacco control and Non-Communicable Diseases prevention and management. RHAS continued to chair the tobacco control civil society coordination group, where, proudly with other members, lead an awareness campaign to engage the public in banning smoking in public places and raise awareness about the harmful effects of second hand smoking.

RHAS also joined regional NGOs to establish the Regional NCDs Alliance, and participated in numerous meetings, conferences and events towards aligning forces to combat chronic diseases.

RHAS has made considerable actions on investing inwards; through establishing a specialized organizational performance development department to focus on

reviewing and documenting our processes and procedures, quality assurance, and ensuring maximum efficiency. We have also been able to provide 18 training opportunities to hone the technical and leadership skills of our cadre.

All these achievements and measures combined are meant to boost performance, strengthen our positioning, and build a learning organization, that provides a highly motivating culture with long lasting impact.

Looking ahead, we realized that there is a long way ahead of us, yet I am confident that we are moving in the right direction. We will continue making continuous improvements throughout 2018 to achieve on all our strategic pillars.

I would like to thank the team of RHAS, for their relentless efforts and their commitment towards delivering on our mission with robust results.

Finally, I would like to thank you, our stakeholders, partners, donors and supporters, for your continuous engagement and trust. We hope that our partnerships will continue to grow, and together we are able to create the success we aspire of a healthy and safe Jordan.

Because of my work in the Healthy Kitchen, I am contributing in providing

healthy meals to the students, also in creating job

opportunities for bakers in the kitchen to improve their

economic status

I would like to thank all thoseworking on the Healthy Kitchen

project, because it helps improve the students’ financial and nutritional status

through providing meals with high nutritional value. It is worth noting

that the healthy kitchen meal helps in improving the focus of the students on their lessons because they used to eat

HEALTHY COMMUNITY CLINIC

2017 Achievements and Results:

The Healthy Community Clinic (HCC) is a community-based MoH health program launched in 2011 in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MoH). The program aims to build the capacity of participating health centers to provide better preventative services to lower the incidence of chronic disease and reduce future complications. Activities in the HCC include interactive sessions addressing health topics of priority, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, blood pressure, asthma, allergies, reproductive health, obesity, the importance of healthy diet, physical activity and smoking cessation.

• The HCC program expanded to include 7 comprehensive health centers including: Za’atari Health Center (Mafraq), Deir Abi Saeed Health Center (Irbid), Huson Health Center (Irbid), Naimeh Health Center (Irbid), Khreibet Souq Health Center (Amman), Mqabalain Health Center (Amman), and Sweileh Health Center (Amman); bringing the number of participating health centers in the program to 26 centers.

RHAS with the support of AmeriCares, has also started conducting a research in 3 health centers in Irbid, in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Urbana – (Champaigne) to assess the impact of the Healthy Community Clinic. The results will be out in 2018• 1,300 patients benefited from various activities that have been implemented within the HCC program in 2017 and 67 MoH staff were trained on the HCC program and materials.• Regular blood tests were conducted for each participant according to their condition in order to follow up on their health status, including HbA1c, lipid profile, fasting blood glucose, TSH and blood pressure.• Four focus group discussions were conducted on a representative sample of the beneficiaries of the HCC program in four health centers, to assess the impact of the program on the beneficiaries and the community. The focus group results showed that the beneficiaries praised the services and activities of the HCC, and they perceived that it resulted in improvements in their health status because they acquired the ability to manage chronic illnesses through a healthier lifestyle. Also, they considered themselves role models to their families and friends, thus promoting positive health behaviors, and helping others lead healthy lifestyles as well.

I started exercisingafter I joined the HCC,

currently I walk on daily basis for 30 minutes, and

I am committed to my medications; which resulted

in reducing my blood pressure from 160/100 to 125/70

“Last April, my weight was95 Kg, HbA1c was 10 and my fasting blood sugar was 234! After walking

on daily basis for 30 minutes, with my neighbors, and cooking healthier meals,

within 6 months, I was able to reduce my weight to 86kg, HbA1c to 5.7, and to 109! That’s an accomplishment that I am

very happy about
