Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours.

Yours are the eyes through which Christ’s compassion is to look out to the world.

Yours are the feet by which he is to go about doing good.

And yours are the hands by which he is to bless us now.

St Teresa of Avila

FROM THE NATIONAL DIRECTOR

The PMS (Pontifical Mission Societies) is the Pope’s official charity for overseas mission. There are 120 offices worldwide, coordinated by the PMS in Rome. They are the Pope’s principal instrument for sharing the Gospel and building the Church throughout the world. In Ireland, this work falls under the aegis of the Episcopal Conference.

Together, the Pontifical Mission Societies offices globally support 1,069 dioceses in 157 countries. It is the only Catholic charity that supports 40% of the Universal Church, which is too new, young or poor to support itself. We aim to follow Christ’s example by helping everyone in need, regardless of background or belief.

The Pontifical Mission Societies build the Church and empower local people to form and sustain communities of faith; train future priests, sisters and catechists; support vulnerable children via educational, medical, welfare and formation initiatives; and educate the faithful about mission.

The Society for the Propagation of the Faith currently supports more than 1,100 mission dioceses. It works continually to increase public awareness by sharing the good news and raising financial aid to assist Catholic missions throughout the world.

Financial aid from the Society supports the formation of laity, building of mission churches, construction and support of pastoral centres and provision of essential transport and equipment for missionaries. It also supports the training and maintenance of catechists.

Each year, the Society for the Propagation of the Faith organises the Church’s annual celebration of mission, World Mission Sunday, which takes place each year on the second last Sunday in October. The Society supports the work of all missionaries, including over 1,000 Irish missionaries working in over 70 countries in 2016.

last year, POF funds were sent from Ireland to the following countries: Botswana, lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland.

The Society of St Peter Apostle provides the financial and spiritual support needed by Young Churches to train their own priests, brothers and sisters.

When the Society was first established in 1889, it supported 2,700 seminarians on their journey to faith. The Society has continued to grow each year and in 2016, the Society of St Peter Apostle supported student priests, male and female novices in their training in mission lands.

last year, SPA funds were sent from Ireland to the following countries: Congo (Democratic Republic), India, liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sri lanka, Tanzania and Zambia.

As the Pope’s official children’s charity for overseas mission, the Society of Missionary Children supports the physical, spiritual, and emotional wellbeing of children around the world. ‘Children Helping Children’ is the motto of the Society, which was founded in 1843 in Nancy, France by Bishop Charles de Forbin-Janson and has been active in Ireland since 1853. Since then it has spread throughout the world and there are children participating in over 100 countries. The Society encourages children to pray together for each other and for children living in poverty and fear. It also encourages children to share whatever they can, no matter how little, to help with the material needs of their brothers and sisters.

Each year, the Society helps more than 5 million children in thousands of education, medical and welfare projects worldwide. Being universal in character, our projects tend to the needs of all children, regardless of their background or beliefs, exemplifying the all-embracing nature of the Catholic Church. Our projects are run by missionaries and dedicated Christians who know the value of every cent or penny they receive and make it count. Happily, we are in a position to send every cent donated by children here in Ireland to our projects. We follow up on each project and insist on reports and photographs of how they used the donations.

The society promotes mission awareness among those involved in the pastoral ministry of the Church. it is understood as the heart of the Pontifical Mission Societies.

This 16-page prayer booklet is distributed in conjunction with the Council for Healthcare of the Irish Episcopal Conference to hospitals and nursing homes for World Day of the Sick on the 11th February each year.
