YOUNG PEOPLE AS CHANGEMAKERSThere are more young people today than ever before. Nearly 90% of the world’s population under age 30 live in emerging market countries.

Adolescence and the transition to adulthood is a particularly critical period that can determine a young person’s future. It is at this juncture, with those young people who are most “at-risk,” that EMpower believes we can make a difference.

Our work focuses on the key areas essential to youth development:

CHANGE THRIVES THROUGH PARTNERSHIP AND COLLABORATIONShattering Stereotypes: Nontraditional Job Paths for Young Women

EMpower brought together experts from nine community-based organizations in six countries, mostly grantee partners, for an EMpower Learning Exchange in New York City. For four days, they worked collaboratively to share knowledge and problem-solve on universal challenges that women face when seeking opportunities for better income, job-security and decision-making power in jobs and sectors traditionally seen as “male-only.”

With and For Girls

EMpower was a founding partner of this Collective, that included Stars Foundation, Malala Fund, Global Fund for Children, Nike Foundation, NoVo Foundation, Plan UK and Mama Cash. The Collective designed a new award to find, fund and increase the visibility and reach of girl-centered organizations world-wide. $1 million was awarded to 20 grassroots organizations in 2015, with the same amount committed for 2016. Importantly, girls are a central part of the awards decision-making, including girls from EMpower’s Adolescent Girls Learning Community in Mumbai.

The Adolescent Girls Learning Community in Mumbai

The Adolescent Girls Learning Community in Mumbai, initiated by EMpower and led by grantee partner Vacha Trust, was begun in 2012, and is now a vibrant, strong community of young women and girls from 8 organizations.

Now entering its fourth year, the Community has just published its Impact Report that compiles data from 2012-14 quantifying impact on the lives of girls, mentors within member organizations, and their local communities. The Learning Community has directly reached over 1,700 people, and influenced 22,104 more.

EMpower has developed a curated collection of the best available Youth Development Tools & Resources, including several by EMpower.

EVERY DOLLAR DONATED TO EMPOWER IS IMPORTANT TO US. We are constantly working to maximize our impact by leveraging all of our funds. For EMpower’s stability, a Board Reserve and policies for its use were established several years ago. Additionally, our Underwriters provide funds for all of our operational needs, enabling us to assure our individual donors that 100% of their funds go to benefit at-risk youth in emerging market countries.

Financial Highlights

• Granted a record $3.4 million, a 43% increase over last year, drawing down on excess grantmaking reserves totaling $420,000 in the US and the UK, and putting more funds to work to benefit young people in EM countries

• Executed $700,100 worth of strategic program initiatives to benefit our grantee partners through dedicated funding for

adolescent girl programming from the Nike Foundation and the NoVo Foundation

– Learning Exchanges on effectively communicating girls’ stories of change in Mumbai, Delhi and Guangzhou

– Adolescent Girls Learning Community in Mumbai involving eight organizations, 11 staff mentors and 80 girls

– First-ever international exchange on “Shattering Stereotypes,” enabling young women to penetrate job sectors traditionally dominated by males that pay better and offer better security, benefits and opportunities

– Toolkits on evaluation for adolescent girls, and on helping young women enter non-traditional spaces

• Awarded the Charity Navigator 4-star rating for the third straight year, achieved by less than 13% of charitable organizations

*All figures in US$. These financial statements include inter-company eliminations and are shown combined for ease of presentation.
