LifeCare Alliance’s founder, Catherine Nelson Black, noted in the origi-nal meeting minutes in 1898 that she founded our Agency, “to take care of those nobody else pays any attention to.” This is our ultimate goal. When you combine her statement with our modern tagline, that we are Nourishing the Human Spirit, well, we have said it all. It is our mission, and how we serve our more than 20,000 clients, 365 days a year.

2018 marks the 120th Anniversary of LifeCare Alliance’s founding,

and the 45th Anniversary of our Meals-on-Wheels service, only the second program of its kind

in the nation. LifeCare Alliance’s 120 year legacy of service is unmatched in the world. To celebrate, I am thrilled to tell you about a new $5 million endowment match opportunity which will help to secure our future.

Our goal is to increase our Agency endowment through our Legacy Endowment Campaign to $20 million, which will provide $1 million in interest annually to fund clients for whom no funding exists. I want to be able to serve all clients in need for decades to come. And, due to the incredible gener-osity of an anonymous donor, the first $5 million in gifts to our endowment will be matched! This is truly an amazing opportunity, which has drawn national attention. I hope you will consider joining those who have already made a multi-year pledge to our endowment campaign, like Kris and me. This is a great way for you to make a permanent difference for our clients. We have another unique opportunity for you this year and again, YOU can double your gift

to our annual operations! We received a “Challenge Gift” from a donor to help feed those in need in Central Ohio. Funding does not currently exist for all those experiencing hunger. Our donor will match your donation 100% up to $200,000 in 2018. Just mark your donation, of new or increased funds, to our “Challenge Gift” and you will help feed seniors and medically challenged most in need. Our donor already matched new and increased gifts in 2016 and 2017. This is the final year for this three year opportunity.

Thanks to support like yours, LifeCare Alliance has no waiting list. We have been able to continue to accept all qualified clients in need. This may not seem like a big deal, as this is what not-for-profit organizations are supposed to do. Unfortunately, we have become the exception, not the rule, and this is truly exceptional. We are one of the very few organizations in the nation still accepting clients without waiting lists.

Throughout our nation, agencies providing services like ours are struggling. Many have even discontinued their work. Knowing that the population of our clients will continue to dramatically increase over the next decade, we need to position LifeCare Alliance to take care of them. In ad-dition to growing our endowment, we need to increase revenues from our fundraising and social entrepreneurship. This number was close to zero in 2000, but we ended 2017 with revenues from these sources totaling 42% of our total revenues. Had this total been lower, we simply could not have served all of our clients, and we would have the massive waiting lists that exist in other metropolitan areas across the country.

Your support of LifeCare Alliance is truly an investment in our community. AARP calculates that LifeCare Alliance saves Ohio taxpayers more than $62,000 per year for each senior or medically chal-lenged person we assist in remaining independent and in their own home, which is where they want to be. This clearly makes LifeCare Alliance the best value for your dollar!

All of this is accomplished every day through the efforts of our dedicated volunteers, staff and management team, board members, supporters, and especially you. Meals-on-Wheels

Meals-on-Wheels provides nourishing food and a daily visit to homebound older adults and individuals living with a medical challenge or disability, 365 days a year. We deliver 5,000 meals a day throughout Franklin, Madison, Marion, Champaign, and Logan Counties — with meal options including hot, cold, frozen, specialty diet, kosher, vegetar-ian, pureed, and mechanical soft. Our meal services keep our neighbors and loved ones in their own homes. In fact, the cost of one day in a hospital equals the cost of ONE YEAR of Meals-on-Wheels. The cost of one month of care in a nursing home equals providing Meals-on-Wheels for seven years! (Source: Journal of the American Dietetic Association, March 2010)

Senior Dining Centers and Carrie’s Café

Carrie’s Café, our premiere Senior Dining Center, has been rec-ognized as a national model in congregate dining, providing socialization, enriching programming, and nutritious meals. We operate over 40 community dining centers throughout central Ohio, including culturally diverse meals at 11 Asian and Somali restaurants.

Open to the public, Carrie’s Café creates a unique, intergen-erational experience for both clients and community guests. Come visit us at 670 Harmon Avenue, Monday–Friday, 10:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., for great food and great fellowship!

Nutrition Services

LifeCare Alliance was formed as the Instructive District Nursing Association (IDNA) by a group of 18 women headed by Carrie Nelson Black, wife of Mayor Samuel Black. They were concerned about the sick and poor, as well as high infant and maternal mortality rates of the day. The IDNA was the first Visiting Nurse agency in Ohio.

1898Typhoid epidemic struck down 1,837 people in Columbus. IDNA nurses were the front line of defense.

As the nation’s second Meals-on-Wheels provider, LifeCare Alliance celebrates 45 years of service and continues to help thousands preserve their independence through in-home and community dining programs.

Groceries-to-Go and Project OpenHand-Columbus

Our Groceries-to-Go food pantry provides groceries, personal hygiene items, and household cleaning supplies to clients of Project OpenHand-Columbus and the Columbus Cancer Clinic living with active HIV/AIDS or cancer.

Project OpenHand-Columbus also provides home-delivered, nutritionally enriched meals, assessments, counseling, and congregate meals to men, women, and children living with active HIV/AIDS.

Senior Farmers’ Market

Senior Farmers’ Market is a USDA-funded program that provides coupons to older adults (60+). Recipients are able to purchase fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey from partnering markets and roadside stands.

LifeCare Alliance administers the program in partnership with the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging in Franklin, Fairfield, Fayette, Licking, Madison, Pickaway, and Union Counties.

Established the first Baby Camp with fund-ing for two tents donated by the Columbus Evening Dispatch newspaper. One tent was erected on the grounds of the Godman Guild Settlement House, the other at Mercy Hospital.

The Central Ohio Diabetes Association (CODA) provides self-manage ment education and support for people living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, medically-supervised camps for youth, screening and awareness for those whose condition is unknown, and prevention for those at-risk for type 2 and complications.

CODA’s high quality education and programming support the whole family while navigating a diabetes diagnosis. From cook-ing classes to important self-management skills, your family can live life to the fullest while navigating the challenges of diabetes. Its signature camp programs welcome ages 3 – 17 from across Ohio to learn how to take control, connect with a community of support, and live well!

Columbus Cancer Clinic

The Columbus Cancer Clinic provides prevention, detection, support, and hope for individuals battling cancer. The Clinic accepts all insurance, as well as serves low-income, underin-sured, or uninsured individuals, regardless of ability to pay. Services include prevention education, early detection, head-to-toe screenings, examinations, mammograms, and home care support.

The Clinic is generously supported by volunteer Ray Groups and Thrift Shops, who dedicate countless hours to raising funds for the Clinic.

Senior PetCare

The Senior PetCare program gives clients the opportunity to care for their companion pets as they remain independent in their own homes. The program delivers pet food and supplies direct-ly to clients’ homes through AniMeals routes, as well as provides in-home and veterinary pet care.

Beat the Heat Fan Campaign

The Beat the Heat Fan Campaign provides box fans to central Ohioans each summer, helping to prevent heat-related health incidents.

CHORES

Our CHORES support service coordinates home repair projects for clients in need of safety and health-related maintenance.

Community Wellness Centers

Wellness services provide health care through community Wellness Centers, located in areas where residents are under-served, have limited access to health care, or limited financial resources. Registered Nurses and Registered Dietitians provide assessments, nursing care, and screening tests, with a focus on education, disease prevention and management, nutrition therapy, and weight and diabetes management.

Help-at-Home

The Help-at-Home program provides personal care assistants and direct support care workers who assist with daily living activities, bathing, fall prevention, and basic household chores. The Help-at-Home staff works with a network of community contacts to ensure that clients can access appropriate services.

On January 27, 2017, the Central Ohio Diabetes Association (CODA) merged into LifeCare Alliance which greatly enhanced the clients of both LifeCare Alliance and the Central Ohio Diabetes Association.

Camp Hamwi, a program of the Central Ohio Diabetes Association (CODA), celebrated 50 years of serv-ing youth and teens with diabetes, through its annual summer camps.
