Welcome To Annunciation Parish!
Uniting The Catholic Community of Newington
Established June 29, 2017
If you are new to our parish or if you have been away from the practice of the faith, we extend a warm
welcome and hope you feel at home here. Our parish is nourished by your presence today. We invite you to
introduce yourself to the priest or deacon after Mass so that we can greet you. We hope you will make Annunciation
Parish YOUR parish.
All children are welcome to be baptized in the Catholic Church. It does not matter if the parents are single or
married outside the Catholic Church. ALL CHILDREN no matter what, are welcome to the baptism of the Lord, as
long as they will be raised Catholic. Annunciation Parish usually offers baptisms on the first and third Sundays. To
get started, please call the parish office - Saint Mary (860-666-1591) or Holy Spirit (860-666-5671). We can’t wait
to welcome your child into the life of Christ and our Church through Baptism.

Daly Notes…
On behalf of the priests, deacons and staff of Annunciation Parish, I extend our best wishes for a
joyous Easter to all of you. It was wonderful to see such good crowds on Palm Sunday and
throughout Holy Week.
I am grateful to all those who shared their time and talent with us by participating in these
special liturgies. Thanks to all of our Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion,
Ushers, Greeters, and Altar Servers. Thank you also to all who decorated and cleaned the
churches throughout the week. We appreciate your dedication and faithfulness.
Thank you to all who minister to us in song. Thanks especially to Libby, David and all of our
talented cantors; choirs and instrumentalists who made beautiful music permeate our
churches throughout the week.
Finally, I am grateful to all of you. Your presence is a testimony to your love and your faith.
May our Risen Savior bless you and your families this Easter and always.
Please keep in prayer the young people of our parish who are receiving the Eucharist for the first
time this month.
Have a Blessed Easter!
Peace,
Father Shawn

Readings and Reflections for April 8th
First Reading: Acts 4:32-35
This second of three “summaries” in Acts highlights the formation of a genuine community in the “golden age” of the early Church. There was one heart and mind among the disciples.
Second Reading: I John 5:1-6
The victory that overcomes
the world (understood as all
the anti-God forces) is the
faith of the disciples who
believe in Jesus.
Gospel: John 20:19-31
The disciples receive from
Jesus a commission to
spread the gospel. The
Thomas story brings
together the main elements
of John the evangelist’s
Christology summarized in
Thomas’ confession “My
Lord and my God.”

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
This year’s Superbowl outcome was a truly happy triumph - not just for the players, but for the
fans of the Philadelphia Eagles as well. The win, coming after an exciting game, was fifty-eight
years in the making. The last football championship had come before the idea of a “Superbowl”
was even begun as an annual ritual. There was vindication for loyal fans who “kept the
faith.” It also ended the city’s long held shoulder chip.
I find this analogous to the Easter story. Admittedly, “all analogies limp”. They are imperfect.
Aspects do not exactly match. Certainly matters in the realm of faith are on a higher plain than
any athletic contest. But there was a long wait for the redemption of God’s people. When it
actually came, the rejoicing even reached to heaven.
For believers in the Man from Nazareth, the resurrection was vindication of their brave decision
to place their hopes in Him. There was also a certain joy for them to know that Jesus kept His
promises. Finally, there was now nothing uncertain about their personal victories to come. So
they, and now we, are all winners. We are “those who have not seen but have believed.”
When we ponder the meaning of Easter we have to conclude that there is nothing like it in all of
human history. No other founder of any other religion can match Jesus. What He taught; what
He exemplified; what He suffered is unique in human annals.
At first glance, this was no team effort, as happens in athletics. Yet it was the effect of the will
of the Father and the Holy Spirit. But even the supportive love of His Mother Mary was not
enough to remove that isolation that made Him cry out that heartbreaking question to the
Father: “Why have You abandoned Me?”
This Second Sunday of Easter is also called “Divine Mercy
Sunday,” so named by Pope Saint John Paul II, springing from
his personal devotion to God as all-merciful. Considering how
our human weakness leads us to sin, such mercy is a need we
all have. We have to remember that our sins caused Christ’s
suffering and death. His subsequent mercy on us is
breathtaking.
I began with thoughts about winning a big game and comparing
it with Christ’s win over Satan and sin. One of the ways we can
win the “big game of life” is by being merciful to one another. It
has been said that “we are like beasts when we kill. We are like humans when we judge. But
we are like God when we forgive.” St. Thomas knew that truth personally when he was forgiven
by a merciful risen Jesus. So can we.
Here is another apt image. “Forgiveness is the perfume that the trampled flower casts upon the
heel that crushed it.”
