Charles Our bishops are in the process of writing a document on the meaning of the Eucharist in the life of the church. Archbishop Gomez, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said in a statement: “As bishops, our desire is to deepen out =rpeople’s awareness of this great mystery of faith, and to awaken their amazement at this divine gift, in which we have communion with the living God. That is our pastoral purpose in writing this document.” The news media has not accurately re- ported the bishop’s decision. But here are some facts that we need to be aware of. First of all, the document will include a section on the Church’s teaching on the responsibility of EVERY Catholic, including bishops, to live in accordance with the truth, goodness and beauty in the Eucharist we celebrate. Here are some commonly asked questions (and answers, as given by the Conference of Bishops): Why are the bishops doing this now? For some time now, a major concern of the bishops has been the declining belief and understanding of the Eucharist among the Catholic faithful. This was a deep enough concern, that the theme of the bishops’ strategic plan for 2021-2024 is Created Anew by the Body and Blood of Christ: Source of Our Healing and Hope. This important document on the Eucharist will serve as a foundation for the multi-year Eucharistic Revival Project, a major national effort to reignite Eucharistic faith in our country. It was clear from the intensity and passion expressed in the indi- vidual interventions made by the bishops during last week’s meeting that each bishop deeply loves the Eucharist. Did the bishops vote to ban politicians from receiving Holy Communion? No, this was not up for vote or debate. The bishops made no decision about barring anyone from receiving Holy Communion. Each Catholic - regardless of whether they hold public office or not - is called to continual conversion, and the U.S. bishops have repeatedly emphasized the obligation of all Catholics to support human life and dignity and other fundamental principles of Catholic moral and social teaching. Are the bishops going to issue a national policy on with- holding Communion from politicians? No. There will be no national policy on withholding Communion from politicians. The intent is to present a clear understanding of the Church’s teachings to bring heightened awareness among the faithful of how the Eucharist can transform our lives and bring us closer to our creator and the life he wants for us. Did the Vatican tell the bishops not to move forward on drafting the document? No. The Holy See did encourage the bishops to engage in dia- logue and broad consultation. Last week’s meeting was the first part of that process. It is important to note that collaboration and consultation among the bishops will be key in the drafting of this document. Pastoral Reflections….from Fr. Charles

Post Covid Projects: Now that Covid-19 is somewhat behind us, the Pastoral Council is again turning its attention to accessible bath-rooms as well as making the church more comfortable es-pecially during summer. These projects will need mon-ey. Are you willing to step up and help? We can’t do it with our present collections. What kinds of sacrifices are you willing to make to enable these projects?

We are blessed with an outstanding Catholic K-8 school in our parish (along with a pre-

school that is in the care of Catholic Chari-ties). Parents: please seriously consider sending your children to Annunciation Catho-lic School. There is no better way to get a foundational Catholic Education for your kids. And after Confirmation this is without doubt the best way to continue Catholic education for your children. Financial assistance is al-ways available. Call the office or talk to Fa-ther Charles or Deb Roberts.

Thank you, Father Brandon! Father Brandon was ordained less than a year ago, on August 15, 2020. He was assigned to us here at Annunciation to learn priestly ministry. We call it a “mentoring year.” All of our newly ordained Capuchin priests spend time in a parish before moving on to their assignments in the Capuchin Province. Father Brandon’s time here comes to a close this weekend. He has been assigned to be the co-director of the Capuchin Postulancy Pro-gram in Colorado Springs. This is the first step to becoming the director in our Capuchin formation program. Father Brandon has been a wonderful and refreshing asset to our parish. He has helped us navigate through this pandemic year. But more than that, he has certainly been a renewal for me. As a new priest, coming out of a current the-ology program, with new ideas about ministry and celebrating the sacraments, with a new apprecia-tion of the Church’s history and traditions (which he saw so clearly demonstrated in our beautiful church), Father Brandon has certainly opened my own eyes to many things that had become forgotten and which needed re-birth in our own parish. Father Brandon has brought a lot of joy and hope into our community. Every day is his “BEST DAY EVER.” His love for engaging in conversations with not only parishioners but those who show up in need of help has endeared him to everyone who comes to Annuncia-tion. He took on Communio and gave it a solid founda-tion. He has become a needed Catholic chaplain to hospitals in our parish. What a help is has been in these past ten months! So, thank you, Father Brandon. You have given us so much during these months. God Bless You in your future Capuchin life and ministry!

¡Gracias, Padre Brandon!
